ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

The site has really gone downhill in the last year or so, both as a seller and a buyer. The quality checks seem nonexistent now? I paid for a "gently used" shirt that ended up being completely covered in fabric pilling and a pair of leggings with a ripped seam. Basically unwearable since these weren't issues I could fix myself. And the $15 fee to cover "rising shipping costs" is just. Wow. I understand that shipping is expensive, but $15 is sometimes worth more than everything in the entire box! Nearly all your items could sell and you'd still end up owing money. So disappointing, ThredUp out as a great concept but I guess it wasn't meant to last.
I received my package in December, the my 70 dollar dress does not fit (was marked as returnable which is the only reason I would buy it without trying it on). I have been emailing since December without ANY reply from thredup. Extremely dissatisfied with the customer service, online it also says you can chat however everyday there is no chat option available and NO one returns my emails. Do not order from thredup!
I ordered from them on July 2022 and returned items them on beginning of August. They emailed me to update refund complete on Aug 19,22, but I didn't receive any cents show on my original payment. Try to contact them since November 22, but they keep silent.
I placed an order on 12/30. Package shipped 4 days later and as of January 14th, I still have not received my order. I will NEVER stop or buy anything from Threadup again!
I used to love thred up until they started charging $14.99 + for me to donate my clothes to them. No thanks I would rather donate to a local thrift store. Not to mention my Louis Vuitton bag I sent them mysteriously disappeared and when I questioned them about it, they said it was too damaged. It was in pristine condition. Mysteriously they had listed at least a dozen Louis Vuitton bags for sale not too long after that and one looked all too familiar. I received no credit for it. I can think of plenty other suspicious missing unlisted items as well.
I love the selection, the service, the packaging and the prices! Affordable, beautiful items. I love the eco aspect of it as well, it really makes me feel that I am contributing to saving the planet and enjoying it.
I would recommend ThredUp to anyone who wants to shop consciously.
I am always very careful to read descriptions and to really really study photos of clothing I'm buying online. This company is horrible, you will be sent items that look similar to but aren't what you ordered and they do not say if there are any flaws with the clothing so it's really up to the gods if you get something that is in wearable shape. For instance I received a wool sweater that looked okay in the photo was described as being in good shape and when it arrived was very clearly shrunk. I was sent two of the same pair of pants and now if I want to return it I have to pay more than what I did for the pants in shipping and fees. Do yourself a favor and stick to eBay and Etsy.
I received my order and got an empty box that had clearly not been properly packed. The end of the box was missing and there was only one strip of tape at the top center. Nothing was holding the box together for shipping. I contacted Thredup and was told to check with the carrier and see if they can find the contents. I don't even KNOW what the contents were as it was a rescue box. I figured I'd just go ahead and file a claim, but come to find out they ship "UPS mail innovations" and this is not an insured service. So I lost my money because they ship uninsured and don't ensure that a box is properly sealed. What a terrible way to run a business!
BUYERS BEWARE! QUALITY CONTROL IS NON-EXISTENT! I ordered two dresses from Thred Up. One of the dresses stated it was a final sale but was described as "EXCELLENT CONDITION, LOOKS HARDLY WORN." The dress I received had black ink stains all over the back rear area--not something anyone could miss! It looks like black marker! The description mentioned nothing about permanent ink stains. This is false advertising! I messaged customer about their extremely inaccurate description about 12 different times and I never received the courtesy of a reply! NO RESPONSE from thredUP! HORRIBLE QUALITY CONTROL AND COMPANY! And as you can see here, they do not respond to customer complaints! DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING FROM THIS COMPANY! Customer service is non-existent and they do not care about resolving issues once they have received your payment! You get what you pay for! Looks even worse in person! Pics automatically rotate once uploaded.
I bought 2 women's jackets. One ended up being a child's jacket. Thredup had it in the women's section. The second jacket just didn't fit right. So I sent them back after the deadline to return. It was a short period from receiving the jackets to returning them. They gave me a courtesy credit on the child's jacket but kept the other jacket. Yes, I was late in sending them back. However, this kind of return policy is challenging for many of us. Buyer beware.
ThredUp has a few merits and several negatives. Handbags especially are grossly overpriced. They make contacting them so difficult that you want to give up. Shipping is the pits, much too slow, unreliable thru FedEx/UPS. When I started three years ago, the company was spot on. Now they make buying a headache.
I mailed a bag in Spring of 2021. I finally received an email that Thread Up received my large bag of clothes in Sept. 2022. I haven't heard anything since! It's been months. How long do I have to wait to know how much store credit I'll get?
I had sent in 12 items to sell. 99% of my utems were newer styles with tags. I waited 8 months for them to load my items on their site then to be told I only sold two yet have to wait another 3 weeks for the few dollars I made. Better off donating to a local charity. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY WITH THIS COMPANY. NEVER AGAIN WILL I DO THIS
So, I ordered several outfits from threadup, they immediately upped the price, I paid anyways. When I received the coats and dresses, they were for little girls not women. I tried to return them and was told not returnable. The ones they agreed to return, they took off restocking fee and return fee for each. I'm going to end up with 75% less what I paid and will trash the rest. Total scam.
I made 7 dollars off of clothes that would have sold for $300+ on Poshmark. This was newer stuff, Aritzia etc released in the last year. I lost out on even more because they just keep whatever they deem "unable" to sell. If you don't price your items absurdly low, they won't sell right away, and ThredUP will get to keep them because they expire after a period of time (not a long one!). When I saw that items did sell, they were eventually returned - I learned that they were placed in bundled boxes that are shipped to buyers which have a very high return rate. This happened over and over and over, until the items expired, giving me little chance to reclaim my clothes or actually give them a chance to sell. You can only reclaim your items a week a away from expiration. To return the clothes to me, I would have had to pay additional money to ship each item back individually at a high shipping rate. The cost of shipping the clean out box to me and "processing" was more then the 7 dollars I made, so I lost money by selling with ThredUP. Don't sell here. SCAM
Ordered a bag on 11/27/22 and it still hasn't arrived. Good thing it was a gift to myself, and no one else.
Charged $3.99 for return restocking fee each item! That was more then I paid for some of them. Not worth trying the stuff on!
Sent my bag of summer items in at the end of July. It is December 18 and the bag still has not been checked in. I had no idea I was selling items for the summer to sell next summer. Their customer service is inexcusable. I have asked for my bag to be returned to me after 4 1/2 months. I still have not received it. I have lost money on being able to sell these items locally, I'm super frustrated. Their business model is very poor. I don't understand what happened with them. Please do not use. Save yourself some frustration.
I bought four items, and two were mislabeled online. On one, the size listed online was different from the size that arrived. On another, a skinny jean was labeled as a boot cut — and the photo appeared to be of a boot cut jean. I tried to return via online and they were not eligible for return. So, I contacted customer service and they said they made the items eligible for return, but that was not the case when I logged back in. In the end, 50% of my order was not what I purchased, and after weeks of emails I give up! Not worth the hassle.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
