ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. Never buy from ThreadUp again
April 14, 2023

Very complicated to navigate their site. Seller sent a damaged item and if I want my money back I would have to pay TU 11 dollars for a return label. That's just a huge rip off. Delete their app and never use them again. Stick with EBay.

Does this look like “ minimum wear”?

Thread Up is an online retailer that resales your consignment items for market price and gives you pennies on the dollar. Their customer service is horriable and pretty much nonexistent therefore, good luck with speaking with someone regarding your sales. There are much better places to take your gently used items than Thread Up.

Used to be great
April 12, 2023

I started buying during the pandemic when I wasn't going into physical thrift stores. Now the fees have gotten so disgusting that it's no longer a worthwhile company to buy from. $4 restocking fee per item, plus return shipping, for items purchased sight unseen from a website. I got so many great pieces in the past, but I won't be buying ever again.

I sent in so many items that always seem to get lost or never even make it for sale. Gucci and Prada, etc. Items got "lost". Payouts are a joke if you even ever receive anything

Thredup used to be great, for both selling and buying. Now, sellers are reporting that clean-out kits don't arrive and acceptance when they do arrive takes many months. Promo Codes that promise to apply to everything never do, not the ones they've sent me anyway. The clothes I ordered arrived stinking heavily of Fabreze or worse and they didn't answer my email about that issue. When I tried a return, they offered pennies on the dollar. I'm done shopping there, and sorry because it was a good cause.

Rip Off
April 7, 2023

I sent two boxes of items to ThredUp for resale, each weighing 40 pounds. Most if not all of the items were new with tags and were Jcrew, Theory, and The Limited. About a month or two later, I received notice that two items had sold for $6 and $2.35 respectively. I paid $25.98 per box (or agreed to that amount being charged to have my items sent to me. Then I get an email today from Thredup asking me to reclaim one skirt for $5.99 for shipping to be sent back to me. So that means I am paying about $52, plus the reclaim fees (if I choose) to make less than $10. A tax writeoff would be more financially beneficial, as I expect to receive additional emails from to pay reclaim fees per item (instead of sending any unwanted items back with the fees I have already paid). You live and learn and I should have paid attention to other reviews, but maybe it was better in the past. But for me, I won't pay additional reclaim fees, but will take my items to a local consignment shop or donate to charity.

I purchased an item on ThredUp listed as "Excellent" but when I received it, it was covered in stains and rips. When I tried to initiate a return and provided the reason why, I could only get free return shipping if I settled for a site credit. That is not acceptable given that I am only returning the item due to ThredUp's gross misrepresentation. I emailed customer service and they blew me off. Absolutely unacceptable. I do not want a site credit as I never want to shop at this scam site again.

Thredup is a shred up
April 5, 2023

I received a nice polka dotted plastic bag to empty out my closet. I place my used clothing and coach bag. After I returned the bag, no communication from this company. Then months later I received an email apologizing for being slow to process the items. I could potentially make 76 bucks on just 3 items! What happened to the bag full of name brand clothes!? Then maybe 2 weeks later, I received an email to purchase my items as they have not been sold! Another email about a fee for nearly 10 bucks to relist the items! Why would I do that. So in short, who knows if anything was ever listed, bought or sold because there's no real way for the donator to control the items donated.
They got a free Coach bag and designer clothes, I got nothing.

I ordered 4 skirts - all of them REEKED of fabric softener...only one fit in any case and I soaked it in vinegar and baking soda and washed it 3 times to get the scent out. I returned 2 items at a $3.99 charge each/and donated the one that was not returnable. So I had a small credit and used it to order a belt figuring that it would not smell of fabric softener...unfortunately it was too big and also did not look anything like the picture that I had viewed...(also donated) In summary,,,,I am done with Thred Up...perhaps if I didn't have such a good sense of smell I would be a more satisfied customer.

I did a "clean the closet" bag full of North Face, Athleta, etc some new with tags about 8 months ago and still have not been paid or received a credit. I had a customer service chat and ironically the very same day they opened my bag. If you look at the clothes online they're all wrinkled - now I know why. They have bags of clothes they can't even get to. I wasted my time and all the clothing I submitted and SO DISAPPOINTED.

So the first time I sent some stuff in and they paid me. Not expecting a lot but a little is better than nothing. This time I sent a 30lb box in of great quality clothing. Not big brands. My account verified they received it. 5 months later nothing. Didn't answer emails. Then I check again and they took my points away and no clue that they were processing my bag. Nothing. As if they never got my bag. Then I receive a small bag of only 10 of my items they returned. Where's the rest?
These people should be put out of business or a class action law suit.

I have sent 2 bags. The second was nearly over flowing. Neither bag I sent had all the items listed. I know the rehearsed answer they give as to the reason why they do not list all items. I'm aware of that. I know I send quality items. The 2nd bag I sent had a particularly large number of good quality and well known designer brands. Only a handful of items were listed and only one of those was an Ann Taylor blouse. There's no way all the missing items that are not listed were the worst in the bag. I'm convinced that employees are stealing the items because they're allowed to or they're not being watched. I will never use Thred Up again b/c they're thieves. If I'm gonna donate stuff without getting any compensation I can do that very easily in my own neighborhood. If they allow employees to purchase items before they're listed, purchase them but pay me my part. The clothes that I submit for sale or donation are always in excellent condition. And they're packed well but by the time TU gets to the items in their bags they're wrinkled and crinkled. They don't process them in a timely manner. Maybe they're short on employees because they're a horrible company.

Bait & Switch, beware!
March 24, 2023

I requested a bag to send in clothing, shoes & purses for RE-SALE. I sent over 15 pounds of items to them. They told me that my items went to a charity, where they donated $5 to a charity I didn't select. Sketchy scam, beware. I sent way more than $5 worth of clothing & items. I'm fully disappointed!

Hairy clothes
March 24, 2023

I usually don't buy used clothes but figured I'd give it a try as I have seen a few influencers talk about this site. I got some good items for a cheap price, however when I received my order a few pieces of clothing had dog hair stuck all over them. I bought a jacket, it had so much dog hair stuck on the collar I had to pluck it off with tweezers until it came clean then I washed it & even more dog hair came out of it. Pretty gross. A sweater that I got had dog hair & human hair stuck in it. I don't understand why a big company like this wouldn't wash/dry clean their clothes before sending them out to customers?

Good overall, with pros and cons
March 24, 2023

I have successfully sold and bought clothing with ThredUp over the past two years (as of spring 2023) and have been happy overall. If you want to sell, you really need to send in NICE clothes that are practically pristine—no one will pay much for tired old clothes. I have sold a number of higher to mid-range items in excellent condition and they went fast. ThredUp takes a photo, provides a basic description and a suggested price: you can change the price and add notes to the description. If your item doesn't sell, you can lower the price. If it still doesn't sell, they will donate it for you or you can pay shipping to have it returned to you. I choose to donate, but all of my items have sold.

For buying, it works best if you filter your search to find clothes in "excellent" condition only. It's hard to tell if something will fit from looking at the photos, but if you know your size in a certain line of clothing, it helps (for example, I know my sizes for Biden, J Jill, etc). You can return stuff but it isn't 100% cash back; it's either store credit or I believe you can get cash back minus the cost of return shipping (I haven't chosen that option). I have been happy with about 75% of what I bought.

Big cons are wait times, which are getting worse and worse. It is currently taking 4+ months for my latest clean out (stuff I sent to sell) to even be processed. It used to be much less.

Shipping is in disarray. It takes weeks to get your order on a good day. I recently got my money back after my shipment just disappeared—no tracking updates—and it took about two weeks of persistent emails to customer service to even get that resolved. They seem seriously understaffed. You cannot call customer service and it takes days to get a response. If the first response you get isn't helpful or doesn't resolve the issue, you have to email again and it takes days to get a response to that email, too. I did get a full refund eventually.

I would be skeptical of reviews saying the site is a scam because it re-sells items for more than they cost new. The sellers (people like me) get to set their own price; ThredUp simply suggests a starting price. And I think the prices listed are fair for used goods—again, as a seller, I sold my items for much less than I paid new.

Overall, ThredUp is a nice way to save the environment by buying gently used clothing, and for me it's been a good way to get some cash for clothes I no longer wear (I retired recently and had a lot of really nice clothes that I wasn't wearing). The big caveat is there are really long waits and very minimal customer service. They seriously need to HIRE some folks.

Final note, they only take women's clothing. I think that there just isn't as great a market for used men's clothing. Also there are some clothing brands they don't accept for sale—there is a list on the site. I think these are mainly cheap brands that don't have much resale value.

ITEM LOST OR STOLEN
March 23, 2023

I was notified that this kit was processed on March 7th. Normally, at least 65% of my items are accepted. I have never felt the need to keep inventory because everything would show - listed or not. However, only 4 items are listed. I sent a full box, and the ones listed are definitely not the best of the lot. I don't remember every single thing but there was a Ted Baker dress and brand-new Mother jeans. No one from ThredUp responds to my questions. I guess they can not be trusted any longer. Sad...
