Hermes Price Gouging
August 29, 2022

I was looking for a pair of Hermes sandals and saw a pair I liked however they didn't have any other options so I decided to look on real real for possibly finding some more choices. I have been both seller and buyer at real real and have been very happy working with real real. But in this case I saw the same sandal I saw at Hermes ($799.00) on real real for $1,300. So I decided to call real real (the department that prices merchandise) and they said that if it's a popular item then yes they will price it at a higher price. It really doesn't make sense to me to pay $500.00 more for a pair of used shoes when I can buy them brand new at Hermes

I hope this helps all the buyers out there and remember do your homework and research it.

Consignment Operations Terrible
August 27, 2022

I sent an 18k Gold hammered bracelet with sapphires to Realreal consignments... they underpriced this bracelet that I bought from them... I tell them to return the consignment on 25 Aug. Of course no response and the it sells today... I could have scrapped the gold for what they sold it for... inept consignment and customer service support. Stay away

No quality control whatsoever
August 26, 2022

I purchased a pair of designer sunglasses in what TRR listed as "Excellent" condition. The sunglasses I received had tarnished and damaged frames and absolutely filthy lenses. They were shipped loosely in a box without any cushioning or bubble wrap.

Sold something on the real real. They priced my item at $210 even though the same exact item in the same excellent condition in a different size and slightly different color was priced at $525. That's a big difference. Lucky for me I saw the other item and complained. Otherwise, I would have been out the commission on $265. After a lot of haggling with the customer service up they agreed to raise price of my item to $475 ( not sure why I didn't get the last $ 50 something about time it took to sell). But then they made me wait six weeks to get paid the increased commission. When the day I was supposed to be paid came they said " oops you should have been paid, we're not sure why you weren't, we will pay you asap." So far 11 days have passed without payment. They did give me $50 for my trouble but I want my commission.

Filthy LV wallet … Such a disappointment
August 26, 2022

My first order with the real real will most definitely be my last. I ordered a LV wallet and it arrived with hair a piece of chewed gum in the bottom of it and to top it off there was still change in the change purse part! Though customer service was friendly trying to get any type of resolution or credit was ridiculous. So sad because some of the prices are fabulous. But would have never expected a filthy product to arrive. What a shame.

Don't consign there
August 21, 2022

I had consignment sales June and as of late August I have not been paid in spite of a half dozen calls to customer service. Every time I am told that I will see the funds transferred to my bank within 7-10 business days. Not true. Still no payment of almost a thousand dollars.

Good selection and variety… but.
August 16, 2022

TheRealReal has some of the best selection of preowned luxury goods. The amount of different designers they carry is astounding. Aside from
Accessories, they also sell clothes and home wear, which not a lot of their competitors sell. They also have relatively good prices compared to other preowned sellers.

That is all great, but there is a catch… a big one. They are absolutely TERRIBLE when it comes to describing and photographing the condition of their items. I have found this to be a consistent thing that they do.

They will assign each item a condition ranging from fair to pristine and each level has a broad description of what constitutes that level. In my opinion, they just use this as as excuse so they give lazy descriptions and deny any return requests if the item shows up not as described. Almost all of the items I've ordered from them have arrived in worse condition than was mentioned on their listings.

Bags that were in "excellent" condition and had "no visible signs of wear" were covered in marks and scuffs. A shirt that was supposed to be size medium turned out to be an extra small. Most recently, a Prada bag that I ordered had peeling leather and a splitting handle, neither of which were mentioned or shown in the listing.

When you are dealing with items with these price points, especially used ones, it is imperative that you are transparent about condition. Not to mention the whole final sale issue. What irks me is that they are supposedly this trustworthy (their track record doesn't show it) seller of preowned luxury goods, but they can't provide good descriptions or photos AND they have a bad return policy. How can they expect anyone trust them when they do things like this?

I do like them, just because of those positives I mentioned earlier, but it just isn't worth the drama. I'd you're going to buy from them, stick with the lower priced items. But you still have to pay $12 for shipping on every. Single. Order. So… maybe just don't.

Disappoint with sakes results
August 15, 2022

I gave TRR items in very good to excellent condition brand names such as Prada, Todd and Stuart Weitzman to name a few. I had lower brand names on Poshmark and eBay and made more money per item. Very disappointing TRR gets sales quickly by low balling the price and get their money fast

TRR is dedicated to selling fast -- and cheap. That means corporate profits. The customer service agents are as helpful and accessible as the company permits. Which is minimal.

The estimates on items you photograph and send to TRR are much, much higher than the actual initial selling price. Before you can demand the return of the item (which is what the rep says you can do), the item is sold and a $350 initial estimate item has been sold for $75 and your commission is $14.

Do not use TRR if you have multiple, luxury items in perfect condition. You will only regret it.

I sent a very commercial item for sale, which arrived on June 26th. It took them 2 months to list it, despite me chasing every week. Every representative lied to me and gave me different time frames and excuses as to why it was not listed. Once it was listed, it was incorrect. Wrong model, wrong description, wrong size. I reached out to have this changed, it's now been 4 days and they refused to do it. Instead, they hang up on me or close out the chats. DO NOT SELL WITH THE REALREAL. It is the absolutely worst experience I have had and their commissions are insane. These would make sense would their service be up to par. Which is *******% not.

I've used Real Real a number of times and I like the concept. When everything works it's great but if you have a query or need customer assistance then the service is TERRIBLE. Online shopping requires honesty, transparency and competency - in my current experience all three of these are missing. Weeks after my initial request for a refund I'm being told the refund was made (I can see no record of this) and when I ask for proof of the refund they say they cant answer that question because Im using the wrong email to contact them - an email that was been updated and they have been speaking to me on for weeks. Overall I'd say proceed with caution. Very disappointing customer service. Rebecca

I had a horrible experience with this company. I sent my bag for a quote. First, I was told I would have the buyout option when I originally brought it to the Real Real in Chicago. Then I found out that was no longer an option, so I asked for my bag to be returned to me

They threw the bag in the Chanel box and Chanel box inside a brown box, no padding or anything. They couldn't even bother to put the chain inside the vanity bag, or my bag back inside it's dust bag.

Isabelle was so eager to have me consign, but now that I have a problem, she is not available via phone or text. Where is my authenticity card?

As far as buying, sure, its trustworthy so i would buy, but not sell. I had a lady come to my home, and i specifically asked for quotes, as I learned on the first bunch the mistake of not asking for the range. Well, still they found a way to pay me little and not honor the quotes they provided. I never for example would have sold a gold gucci purse, which they said would bet between 525-625 and i netted $141. No fricken way. I was clear. Now getting to customer service, very nice tone, but unhelpful and wont make it good. So bottom line, find another way to sell your nice stuff.

I am a VIP seller on TRR since mid 2020 as a seller, i send them consignment and they price it. Not very quick, but nothing more than 4 weeks as they promised. Since the company restructure in mid 2011, sacked a lot of account manager, it becomes very poor.

First, the first manager got sack, there is no email informing you, your email just bounced back. The email address no longer available. And I found from him from LinkedIn and message him, and knew he got sacked very sudden. ( seriously? I am a detective?) TRR dont think they have responsibility to inform you. After a month, and many emails, i found the new manager.
And I request my old consignment to send back, it takes for few months to return back to me.
Since then, i have changed another 2 manager, and my consignment cannot list after 4 months i send the goods.
The price that they offered is extremely low. They don't care about what you get, but they will fixed their commission price at 30-40% depends on what you consign to them. Sometimes, you make a loss.
And the worst things is, I wait for 4 months and my consignment cannot come on the list. Keep on sending email to push the manager and pricing manager. And they keep on saying " doing it", " tmr ", " next week" these kind of answer., so finally I wait for 4 months +

I am really disappointed to TRR, they used to be a very good company to consign, efficient and fair. Now, I think they are just waiting to go to IPO / showing the good part to the buyer. And don't care about the consignee who gave them the consignment. It is my last time to give them consignment, and hope to find a better company to replace it.

Truly I am sad about this!

Compelled to update on my on-going shopping on this site: They've recently removed ALL info on their site, re any method to receive ANY customer service... my last entry here mentioned a 'text' method, that was INEFFECTUAL in reaching Cust Svc. NOW, it appears that this method is the only way to contact them! On their site, they no longer state their previous EMAIL ADDR for Cust Svc, NOR, their actual phone number. I'd just placed an order, and an item has not been shipped, after 5 days after my order. I cannot contact A HUMAN AGENT! Their previous email address, to which I sent 2 msgs re this order, states 'due to CV issues, expect a reply within 5 days, and 2 WEEKS before a full 'conclusion'/'resolution', to your issue'! ---> NO Customer Service! Their SOLE CONTACT, VIA TEXT, is a joke -- it is the infamously INEFFECTUAL 'virtual assistant', only good to 'burn' thru your time, effort, and utter frustration. This IS my last order, after more than 5 years of shopping. I'll be requesting a chargeback from my credit card firm for this order; an item that will probably NOT BE SHIPPED, yet was charged. --- SHOP AT YOUR RISK! What an embarrassing DEMISE of a formerly, rather impressive 'upscale' site!

Still Among 'Best' for Pre-Owned Clothing
March 11, 2022
Previous review

To anyone who's interested in my updates: Customer for clothing over 7 years; obviously, am satisfied to remain a customer. Updates, IMHO: 1) Prices hv increased, 2) Clothing selection 'struggles' to keep filled. In Coats, they'd introduced a large 'Unsigned' category; ie, no 'designer' name; mainly fur coats, but overpriced, imho, bc they ARE unsigned, 3) ALL-IMPORTANT FACTOR - Customer Svc: Introduction of service via text, and 'migration' away from phone agents. I tried the 'text' method, and couldn't get past their automatic reply of 'how to return your items', or some such useless queries, and anyway, I required an actual agent to help with a return. The 2nd reason I still shop the site is bc of their reasonable return policy, which is REQUIRED bc their inventory IS PRE-OWNED. If any TRR personnel is reading this msg: Pls DO NOT ELIMINATE YOUR PHONE CUST SVC - else, I will not continue to shop. (again, I didn't find their new service-via-text option useful/easy to use). Their phone agents are now out-of-country; I had to call today with a problem, and had no problems with communication. --- Happy shopping :)

Update, Again; Repeat Customer
November 18, 2019
Previous review

Will make this update succinct... Customer for about 4 yrs, buying clothes only (NO big-designer handbags, nor shoes). Pros: 1) Still one of the best sites insofar as selection, 2) Possible to get a good/great price due to pre-ownership. Cons: 1) HORRIFIC, DETERIORATED Cust Service: 1 hour wait via phone, totally useless via email, 2) Condition of items: Always 50-50 on whether actual condition is as listed-view photos carefully, but expect condition to be WORSE... Just return it! 3) Packing and Shipping: Worse packing than Walmart-clothing is placed in a dustbag, and then in a plastic mailing bag; if bulky, you may get lucky to get a box. All their sites-CA (80% inventory held here), NJ, AND Stores (marketed as handling the "best" pieces-hah!) - handle clothes in this manner, no matter how famous, well-known, or $$$ the designer! (4 yrs ago, NJ used hangers, garment bags AND boxes, for the big designers, BUT NO MORE). To me, $12 ship is OK (shipping is $$-be realistic!), but slowest service that I didn't know possible from UPS - I live in PA, and a CA package takes 8 days! Conclusion: Service has deteriorated/CHEAPENED in all aspects over a short 4 yrs-very frustrating! "Management" is really s--- up! So, if you have the time and patience, good luck and happy hunting!

Update re This Site; 04/2019
April 17, 2019
Previous review

Forgot to add another comment to my updates re this site- After more than 4 yrs shopping... 1. Selection: Re "designer" brands for pre-owned clothing, the best in my opinion, 2. Condition: "50-50"; beware; descriptions may be inaccurate (untruthful!); the more-famous/popular the designer, more incidents of "inaccuracy". Also, if you like designers who are popular with the counterfeiters, beware; I just returned a clothing item I was quite certain was a fake (and a really bad one; I'm a seamstress, and of course, have designer items). Although the Cust Svc agent was great in handling the return, they simply re-listed it for the next unfortunate customer, 3. Prices: Volatile; the more famous/popular designers prices continue to increase, 4. Customer Svc: Has improved, more agents added; most are courteous, and will attempt to retain you as a (happy) customer. Cust Svc is the reason I'm still shopping here, 5. Pet peeves - Shipping, and CA warehouse packing methods: 90+% of their inventory is stored in CA, and they've contracted for the slowest (ie, cheapest) UPS service- 7+ days from CA to PA - this is ridiculous and irritating! (USPS is 3 days Priority) And worse, this warehouse's packing policy is to squash your purchase in the smallest box they have, no matter what the item is, its size, or designer. Even if it is a very-top-european designer (ie, very-high original price), do not doubt that it will be SQUASHED into a 20x16x5 box (their medium box)! In all the items I've received from them (+90%), I believe that this warehouse just does not STOCK a larger box. (This is a slight improvement over their practice 3 yrs ago- I ordered a trench coat, several leather jackets (all w/ an original retail of over $600), and each was SQUASHED into a 16x12 TYVEX BAG as a mailing "container" - can you believe it?! Obviously due to massive complaints, they've moved on into small boxes, haha) If you should be lucky to order an item stocked at their NJ warehouse, now this location does pack your precious item CORRECTLY; they use their largest box FREELY (28x18x6, approx), as EXPECTED for a high-original-value item! (Shout-out to NJ!) So, depending on what you like, and what you would accept, you may enjoy shopping here :))

Date of experience: April 15, 2019

Another random update of my shopping (as a customer for 4 years). Pros: 1) Still one of the better sites for upper-end clothing insofar as selection, and possible expected condition, 2) Possible to get a good/great price (because of pre-ownership). Cons: 1) Deteriorated, HORRIFIC customer service- like recent comments, waits of an hour via phone, worst I've experienced. But, most agents are reasonable with most requests. Useless service via email- a reply over several/many days. 2) Pricing: Erratic; higher for what they consider big-name designers. 3) Condition of Items: 50-50 if the condition is as listed; they have ALWAYS minimized/failed to include negative descriptions - Just return it! 4) Packing & Shipping: CHEAP practices-the item is placed/stuffed(!) into a dustbag, then into a outer mailing bag; if bulky, like a coat/jacket, then "possibly" into a box -- worse than Walmart! Four yrs ago, if the item was stored in NJ (~10-20% of inventory), and the item was truly a big designer (orig retail price in the Thousands), they would place it on a hanger and garment bag, then into a box - this is a "proper" way to treat such an item! But now, ALL sites-NJ, their STORES(! Marketed as holding the "best/like-new" items), and CA (always handled items in this way)-treat ALL items as described above -- "how to save $5, but lose cust goodwill"! The only "good" thing about shipping is the cost - $12 is OK for UPS, $20 for expedited, but-is their slowest service-I live in PA, and have to wait 7-10 calendar days! Conclusion: If you like upper-end clothing, and have the patience and time for atrocious cust service, poor item handling (+cost, you may have to send the item to be pressed), and returns, this site may be acceptable... good luck and happy hunting!

Yet Another Update from Repeat Customer
November 27, 2018
Previous review

Another update for this site, as a problem has recurred (for me)... General comments re this site (I only buy clothes, shoes & handbags): 1) Good inventory, 2) Truthful listing descriptions are the problem- consider 50-50 that the item's condition has been honestly provided. If "top designer", my experience is that damage, extreme signs of wear, etc, have been deliberately NOT LISTED so the item "appears" to be in acceptable state for wearing. 3) The saving grace for #2 is their phone cust. Service; most reps are courteous, and will work with you for a return, or issue with the item. Latest development (late 2018) is addition of telework for their reps, so perhaps this situation will improve the morale of their staff (previously encountered several very terse, "unhappy" reps). 4) Newest warning: Items out of Brisbane, CA location can be inappropriately packed- I just received a leather jacket (approx original retail $700+) that was absolutely SQUASHED into a box the size for SHOES, 13x10x3! And, delivery before that was a TOP DESIGNER trench coat (sz Sm, womens), PLUS a pair of TOP DESIGNER sandals, BOTH SQUASHED into their next-larger size box, 16x11x4! (Delivery of a trench coat (sz Med) last year was simply packed in a SMALL! Tyvex-type bag, not a box!) All this out of their CA warehouse; either management loves this manager for this dubious shipping "economy", or, they should be ALERTED... This kind of economy can possibly damage the items, but definitely IS CHEAP, clearly inappropriate for the particular high-$ item, and for PUBLIC RELATIONS! How can you continue to tout your "exclusivity" for high-end goods if you practice this kind of presentation and delivery? (BTW, all the items out of their NJ location are wonderfully and correctly, packed, in contrast - No complaints there) So, my conclusion: Take care with your selections, expect dissatisfaction with their listing descriptions, and perhaps, become acquainted with phoning their cust. Service for a remedy. (Their email service is possibly too slow; 2 days to respond)

Date of experience: November 24, 2018

Am compelled to post this update bc my present situation. One of the items I just received has damage that was not disclosed in the listing. Tried to contact Cust Svc that has recently devolved to NON-EXISTENCE, insofar as VIA HUMANS, leaving 2 frustrating 'options': 1) Via text, which just gets you to an AI/automated program, and (out of desperation) 2) via email. Tried 1), and gave up after a tedious question-&-answer game that started with the 'voice' asking my first name, my last name...and, I gave up! Am forced to try email: Previously, they had staff on Saturdays who responded, but no longer; if I even get a response, it will be 'within 3-5 business days'. As short as 6 months ago, you could still phone them, and get A HUMAN, but this has been discontinued. I'm theorizing that the poor economy has management rewriting their operational playbook to reduce costs, BUT, TO ELIMINATE EASILY-ACCESSIBLE HUMAN CUSTOMER SERVICE is sadly misguided - they will lose even more customers, myself included. I've been a customer for more than 5 years, and am very disappointed, and frustrated, in Management's devolved 'No Customer Service (So Don't Expect Any)', as evidenced by NO OTHER CONTACT INFO ON THEIR SITE, besides their horrific text-automated system. (At the start of my shopping, more than 5 years ago, their Cust Svc was excellent, including Phone Agents, who nearly always resolved my problems within the call)
