The company, Roomster, exhibits a polarized reputation among its users. Positive feedback highlights the platform's user-friendly interface and a variety of affordable listings, with some customers successfully finding suitable rooms. However, significant concerns overshadow these strengths, including deceptive practices regarding message visibility, a lack of genuine leads, and inadequate customer support. Many users express frustration over payment models that feel exploitative, alongside reports of scams and unresponsive service. Overall, while some appreciate the platform's potential, the prevailing sentiment suggests a need for improved transparency and customer care to enhance user trust and satisfaction.

Really love the tools that Roomster offers to users to make their experience on the site more efficient. The maps feature is probably my favorite.
TERRIBLE. COMPLETE SCAM. The free service is useless, and the selection so limited that craigslist makes it look like a joke. When you try the 3 day 5 dollar subscription they CHARGE YOU $30 WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT when the 3 days is up! If you google 'roomster scam' you get a ton of results. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Roomster-is-a-SCAM/**************?sk=timeline

How can this website be legal? How is it legally okay to charge someone without their express consent? They didn't even try to make it clear or upfront. Awful people, terrible business model, I can't wait for them to be replaced or taken to court for being so fraudulent. We will see if they ever refund my money. I have my doubts. Even if they do, this 'business' still deserves 0 stars.
I was initially wary of finding a roommate online but my last roommate was someone I was a friend with and we grew to hate each other. I found someone on Roomster to live with and we actually get along so well I’m really surprised!
My old roommates boyfriend LIVED with us and had his own place like 30 seconds away. I had to wait for him to get out the shower just so I could take one. The worst part was, I think my roommate KNEW that it pissed me off when he was over because as soon as I walk in the door theyd run in the bathroom to take a long $#*! shower. I think its so $#*!ing rude and this was a horrible first roommate experience. He has shaved in the bathroom with nothing but underwear on and leaves the hair there. They left dirty dishes in the sink and trash bags by the front door for days. We had roaches. He knocked on the door at 4 in the morning hoping someone would let him in. They left SHOES on the COFFEE TABLE and food on the stove. I felt like my kindness was being taken as a weakness when Im really trying to turn over a new leaf and be cool & level headed. But Im tired of this $#*! so I left the place and found a new place to live on Roomster. I found a nice, QUIET, and SINGLE girl to live with and I couldnt be happier.
Few months ago I was moving out of my old place looking for a more affordable option. After searching the net for a few days I came upon Roomster and gave it a try. They had a plethora of options and I found something that suited my budget better.
What a JOKE! Roomster's "free basic" service, & once you get an email/reply for a potential roommate, they block you from reading it by stating you have to upgrade and pay... I am not going to give these scumbags my information, I can't believe I opened up a profile, so bogus. Stay away.
I came home one late afternoon to my dorm room in South Quad at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. My roommate Scott had a buddy of his over. The turntable was playing the Stones album, Some Girls at full volume. I noticed that my roommate was wearing my Levis because, as he said, he liked them. They also had both dropped some acid and were completely obliterated on that plus whatever else they had been taking. Also, this roommate used to like to eat Hostess Fruit Pies and place the half eaten ones on my books. I could go on but wont. Needless to say I found a new place to live off campus. Found a good deal on a place through Roomster.com. I was actually surprised how many affordable options they had available.
My old roommate and I used to be really close friends until after we moved in together, which changed. He flunked his classes that semester, didnt have a job, and depends on mommy and daddy. At age 21. I however, have a job, I attend school, I pay for everything myself, and I have my priorities right. He waited our sewer and water bill out and never told me until the weekend before it was due and made ME call the office to make sure it wasn’t “fraud” because he is psycho. Then, he was gone for the whole Christmas break, calls me up and asks me to forge a check for him to pay rent, which I didn’t because that’s stupid, so I say just drop the check off in the dropbox, it won’t be considered late. That kid didn’t do it, so now we are late on rent. I decided I had to find a new living situation so I found a chill girl to room with on Roomster.com.
Had a good experience on Roomster listing my available room for rent. Easy to communicate with users via the sites messaging suite and I found a nice student to rent the room to.
I had a fantastic roommate for two years who put up with a lot of $#*! from me. The most memorable thing that happened was when a blue whale died and washed up on a nearby beach, so I got up the following morning at 4 a.m. to take a quick look at it before work. I brought back a chunk of baleen with me and stuck it under my bed. By the time my roommate woke up the room REEKED of dead whale and continued to do so for at least three days even after we put it away in a Tupperware container. It was really gross. She ended up moving out and I had an empty room and bills to pay. A friend of mine suggested I list the room for rent on Roomster after they had used the site with great success. It was easy enough to create the listing and their customer service was extremely helpful in answering any questions I had. After a few weeks I found a really great person to rent the room to.
I found an amazing deal for a room to rent on Roomster after I had the most bizarre experience ever. Sophomore year of college, I moved into this house next door to where all my friends were living in Boulder, Colorado. I didn’t know my new roommates, but they all seemed like chill dudes. They smoked a lot of pot, but it was Boulder and who didn’t? My first few months, I noticed that a lot of high school students would swing by the house, then leave a few minutes later. I started getting to know my roommates better, and quickly discovered that they were among Boulder’s most notorious drug dealers. They were cool with me, though, so I just stayed out of their way. One time, a family of authentic, off-the-grid hippies (complete with a 5-year-old boy named something like “Stargazer”) came and set up a tent in our backyard that connected to our living room via a sliding glass door. They sort of occupied the living room and backyard for a few weeks, and stole $#*! out of my bedroom. One night, I was sitting in the living room alone, and all my roommates burst in the front door shouting. One of them was bleeding from his nose. They ignored me and kept shouting about how they we’re going to “go back and get those $#*!ers” and each went to their rooms. A minute later, they all came back out with handguns and ran out the door. I asked to end my sublease early the next day, and I think the hippie family moved into my room as soon as I left. No idea what happened to any of them.
I lived with this guy who was a little weird and very controlling — the kind of person who desperately wanted you to think he was chill but was the literal opposite. He and his girlfriend would have extremely loud sex to Pandora's techno station, but because he did not have a subscription, in the middle of them going at it you'd hear "Nchnchnchnch — advertisement: Are you a vampire? — Nchnchnch." Anyway, between having sex to techno and vampire ads, he would break up with her and then call his dad to cry/yell about how she was a horrible, immature person. I finally decided I didn't have to live with this crap anymore so I started doing research on good places to find roommates. I ended up finding Roomster through a different site but I went with them because it seemed like they had a lot of rooms available and the prices weren't bad.
I once had a roommate who didn’t speak to me for the first few weeks that we lived together. After living together for about a month, he sent me a text telling me he was filming a video with a friend and to not come into the basement or make noise. That made me uncomfortable. I went to the basement when he and his friend had left and found that there was film equipment and the walls had been covered in foam padding. A few weeks later, I spent the week of Halloween watching horror movies in my living room and noticed the parade of guys he brought in; one even went down into the basement for a while and came back upstairs with his head shaved. A few nights later I went to the basement to pee because my roommate was upstairs, and when I got to the bottom of the stairs I found a pair of dominatrix boots. OK. Then I went into the bathroom and found a pair of huge dildos on the toilet tank. Over the next few months, I found other things, like bondage masks, more filming equipment, lists that gave an overview to the ‘actor’ what to do (things like, ‘cup balls with hands’ and ‘wait’). One day he even sent me a text telling me that I should get out of the house for a bit because he was filming a video and he didn’t think I wanted to be around to hear it. It turns out I was never officially on the lease (surprise! He never turned my paperwork in), so when I started finding blood in the bathroom on knobs and handles, I peaced out so fast. A friend recommend I try Roomster to find a new roommate and place to live so I made a profile and ended up finding some really great people to live with. The site was reasonably priced and they have a ton of rooms available in a million different cities and areas at all different price points.
I once lived in a house with about 15 other people (started off with four, but random people kept showing up and not leaving), and this one girl would constantly steal from me. It started off with her stealing food and escalated to her stealing stuff like jewelry from my room, then WEARING IT IN FRONT OF ME and insisting it was hers. One day I went through the house and took all the toilet paper, Kleenex, towels, etc., I could find and hid them. Then I laced a hot dog with Ex-Lax and left it on the counter. Took her about five minutes to steal and eat the hot dog. Thirty minutes later I saw her emerge from the bathroom (which had no shower, just a toilet and sink) looking like she was on the brink of death. She never mentioned the mysterious lack of toilet paper, and my stuff was never stolen again. I ended up moving out the next month and I found a sweet deal on Roomster for a room to rent. Best part was it was a much better price than what I was paying previously.
I used to have a rabbit called Hope, I came home one day and my housemate looked me dead in the eyes and told me, ‘Your Hope is dead.’ I had no idea what she had meant until I went into my room to find the rabbit dead on my bed. My housemate had randomly snapped and killed it. I left that place the next day. I stayed with friends for a few weeks while I looked for another place. I ended up finding a really great deal on Roomster for a room to rent super close to my job. I met up with the person who created the listing for coffee beforehand to make sure that they weren’t crazy, lord knows I didn’t need to deal with any more traumatic housemate experiences. They were great and we get along extremely well. This site is great.
I posted a room to rent on this web site. I received 6 inquires from people who were interested in renting a room. Or so I thought... This is just one example of people looking for a room. Was a total waste of money, and my time.

To me
Hi,
Thank you for the well written reply, and you sound like a nice person I can confide in
This seems weird confiding in you, but I do really need someone to talk to right no
My Dad left me Gold Bars before he passed away which are not part of his documented will, it was given to me by my Aunt upon my arrival. My step mom requested a photocopy of my passport front page and signature for the Family Lawyer as part of the Will sharing procedure, I was so dumb and foolish to give her my passport so she could get the front page photocopy Herself.
Now she would not return my passport because she feels her son is entitled to the Gold Bars, my Aunt on the other hand told me my Dad personally asked her to give me the Gold bars when he was critically ill, she said he felt he hasn't been the best Father to me after my mom passed away.
I presently don't feel safe anymore at the moment, and urgently needed someone to confide in, am really sorry for bringing this up as we both are strangers, I almost contacted my ex boyfriend whom I swore never to speak to all because I feel so lonely and confused. I will totally understand if you don't feel like letting me confide in you.
I found a courier company Via Mat International they are a Worldwide domicile-to-domicile transportation of valuables and semi-valuables, I already paid them $12,490 to ship the Gold bars, all I need now is someone to help me sign and receive them before my arrival. I also need help balancing the courier outstanding, can you help me?
I need to balance the outstanding before final delivery could commence, I really need help on that too, I am willing to give you a token worth $20,000 once I arrive if you could help me. I intend to arrive next week
All I long for is a quite new path in life.
PS
I can explain further if you are interested.
Regards

I live in a three-bedroom apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. One of my roommates I have been living with for about three years and we get along great. Our schedules are pretty conducive to a working roommate relationship and everything was fine. We had this girl living with us but she moved back home to Thailand so we needed to fill the room. We found this kid through a mutual friend of ours to rent the room. He was a young college student and at first we thought it would be a good fit but it turned out not to work out for a number of reasons. He was constantly smoking pot in the apartment and it really stank up the whole place and was very distracting. We were even starting to get complaints from other apartments on our floor. At the end of his lease we elected not to renew him and we created a listing for the room on Roomster. Their service was very helpful because you can tailor your listing exactly how you want and exclude smokers or excessive partyers from it. We found a really nice, quiet girl to rent the room and we couldn’t be happier.
I was living with this guy I met through a mutual friend and had no issues with him. He was very clean and respectful and always paid rent and bills on time. Unfortunately I began to develop an allergic reaction to his cat and eventually it got so bad to the point where I couldn’t be in the apartment at all without breaking out in hives and being in so much pain. I knew no one was at fault for what was transpiring but I needed a solution. At first I contacted a friend of mine who is a real estate broker to see if he had anything in a building that doesn’t allow pets but everything he came back with was way out of my budget or was not in a good area. I did some research online and found Roomster and was really glad with the service. They allow you to customize your profile so I was able to rule out any listings that allowed pets. I eventually found a great deal on a room to rent in a luxury doorman building that did not allow pets so it was perfect for me!
I had a housemate who wore long Victorian nightgowns and spent every night playing her keyboard on the harpsichord setting. At first I found this amusing but eventually it became very distracting and then it became annoying. I asked her repeatedly to either use headphones while she jammed or to at least do it during the day when I wasn’t home. She wasn’t having any of it so I started looking into moving out and finding a new roommate. I saw Roomster on a Google ad and for some reason clocked through to it. I don’t normally do stuff like this but I was kind of desperate and the site seemed legit. I actually ended up finding an amazing deal on a room with a super cool roommate. They are more of a literary nerd so all thy do is read books which is perfect for me! Would definitely recommend Roomster to people.

Answer: These are untrue statements. We have asked our many satisfied customers to post their positive experiences about Roomster to counteract the negative, and mostly untrue statements posted about us. If you notice that Sitejabber has negative reviews of almost every company doing business in the united states. If it was all true, there would be no business left and everyone would be out of work. People never write good reviews, people love to be negative. Its sad.
Answer: Hi Aminah, Roomster did not post that ad on Craigslist, we did not create that link and there fore we can not offer support for it. This looks to be one of our affiliates, who should not be doing this. We will be removing this person from our affiliate program. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Answer: That makes little to no sense. Undeleted? What does that even mean? N you want to create an account after you deleted it? Go ahead.

Roomster has been in business since 2003 and has helped millions of people find someplace to call home. We have worked hard to create the best site that we can and are always improving the user experience & building new and improved functionality. We charge a small fee for time usage on the site, and we think its pretty economical and fair. The money we charge keeps the servers running, the coders developing & and keeps the rest of Roomster's employees working hard for you!
Like any business that handles large volume of people, we have received some complaints, every company has. People get frustrated for all kinds of reasons, and we understand. It can be frustrating to look for a place to stay or renting out your place, especially when money is tight. We try to make everyone happy, but its not always possible. Sometimes without even contacting us, some people vent in the public forum.
A popular way to vent these days is taking to complaint/ripoff/scam board sites. These sites are privately run sites that feed off & profit from people's frustrations. In most cases post are made by nameless, faceless individuals, and are very negative in nature. We have been called a scam, that our listings are not real, members have said they can't cancel billing, or didn't know about purchasing a subscription. All kind of hurtful and untrue stuff has been said... and not just about us, but millions of good companies in the service industries. The goal of these complaint/ripoff/scam board sites is to have the companies hurt by the negative reviews to pay to remove the negative posts.
