While I was a member of this website the lead (who is now on HOA board) used this website to organize attacks on fellow neighbors. The very first post he place on this website was about a neighbor who was upset with him for letting his dog crap in her yard. He proceeded to write nasty things about her and post her address so that everyone could harass her and walk their dog by her house.
He is now using this site to organized a gang stalking party against me since I have filed a discrimination complaint against him. Having site leads is a joke since he is the site lead and deletes anything he does like. This is just another tool available for people like him to bully and terrorize people.
I live in Robbins brook subdivision in Winston Salem north Carolina. As many have stated the leads are either useless or treat next door as their own personal sound board in which they choose what is posted and what they want deleted. Case in point, our subdivision used this board as a non HOA forum. However, a yard sale was posted, which is an HOA function, and since we have had recent breakins I voiced the opinion that maybe it was not the right time. The asshat lead not only allowed an HOA matter to be posted in a non HOA forum but then accused me of starting a fight with the original poster. So I deactivated my account. I feel that in this day and age if you need an app to communicate with your neighbors, instead of going and rining their doorbell, then maybe you should just stay inside. And to the asshat of Robbins brook, up yours. ( to be honest I'm really not sure who this guy really is. For all I know he could be a complete whack job sitting in his garage looking at porn and filtering next door info.).
NextDoor is a great concept, designed for greed, poorly executed and managed by under-paid kids.
Censorship - If it was consistent, it would work. It is not. Leads don't follow guidelines and suspend members who are no more guilty than their friends/powerbase.
"It's Us or Them" Mentality - Leads develop a siege mentality and strike down any dissention.
Mob Rule - No justice, no consistency, only hyper-local cults of personality.
Who's In Charge? - Once Leads are chosen, THEY ARE ENTRENCHED. No chance for new blood. (Who would dilute their own power, right?)
ND Admins - Millennials, working 9 to 5 behind a desk in Silicon Valley... what can you really expect? I bet the job of answering member emails is used as a form of punishment. You have no recourse in a neighborhood going of the rails.
Regardless of the guidelines posted on nextdoor.com, this site offers the perfect venue for people to hide behind their computer screens to viciously attack their neighbors. The ads for this site lead you to believe that you will be transported back to a time when neighbors visited on front porches, children played outside until the street lights came on and the late night news began with the statement, "It's 11:00. Do you know where your children are?" Unfortunately, that's not the case. The venom and slander posted daily on this site is cyber bullying at its best. The lies and misinformation are damaging to a person's reputation and character. It pits neighbors against neighbors. Nextdoor is a toxic waste dump. It's uncontrolled. Complaints result in "wrist slaps" and violators are removed for a short time a la time out only to be allowed to return continuing the violation. Eventually, someone will be hurt or something tragic will happen that will bring accountability or lack thereof to this site. Why would anyone or any community want to use this website? Nothing good can happen Nextdoor.
Nextdoor was being used very successfully in our rural neighborhood until one lead, a neighbor with a history of problematic behavior, deleted a number of appropriate and civil posts while writing highly inflammatory posts herself and blocking others from commenting on them.
Three neighbors began correspondence with Nextdoor support asking that the lead in question be relieved of her duties. We provided clear examples of the leads transgressions and our correspondences were clear and polite.
We were told the lead was warned but shall remain as a lead. Nextdoor is not actively being used in our community anymore. Very, very unfortunate.
NextDoor is an unethical organization which censors posts if they are perceived to interfere with the objective of acquiring more members. They claim to be for neighborhoods but they are for themselves. It has been clearly exposed that they will eventually be selling advertising to businesses as their source of revenue. They get more money by selling the number of users they can reach. Do not be misled this is not a pure organization to support better neighborhoods they are playing a numbers game only.
Oh, if you have any questions about NextDoor's unethical behavior don't forget the founder was recently found guilty of a Felony Hit & Run. The founder sets the ethical mindset of the organization.
I could accept the censorship if every one was censored the same, that is definitely NOT the case! One of my leads was/is a cop with a beef with our board of directors and him and his group complain and complain and complain about the unfair treatment of our new board. I pointed out some issues I had with our cop lead and his failure to follow the same rules as a lead as well as a police officer. I emailed the information and I discussed it briefly in a post. I was kicked off and informed that the site was not designed for that type of format. The cop's favored "groupies" remain and continue making unproven accusations about our board members. So it is not the concept of the guidelines or the censorship I have a problem with, It is reading the posts that are similar in content that remain. DON'T BOTHER!
I have never experienced censorship like this in my life. If you don't agree with the leads local politics and voice your opinion it will be removed. Then they block you from making any posts while they make accusations and spread rumors which cannot be defended. These are certainly "neighbors" I was happier NOT knowing. Complaints to to NextDoor Inc. have been to no avail.
I am very happy to have found this site! I have found excellent repair people, free stuff and local events plus safety/crime alerts and timely information. I am just a happy user and am thankful for whoever is running it behind the scenes. Thank you!
It's true what everyone has already said here: Stay away.
In my situation, one Lead started a thread, but in her post she called other people "stupid". Then a second Lead dismissed everyone else's concerns for the issue and went totally off-topic. When I called him out on this and tried to bring discussion back to the issue, another member jumped in just to stir things up, I guess, but she posted profanity in a very hurtful personal attack against me.
So I flagged it, but then our so-called Lead deleted my comments - and allowed her abusive rant to stand!
When nothing was done, I tried to defend myself, but I did not resort to profanity or personal attacks. I was pretty upset, though. After I contacted the site for help, Bobek told me I should've alerted our Lead to the problem first, even though I told him that's what I did. The Leads ARE the problem.
As a result, my account was deactivated, but what about the member who posted the abusive comment?! No matter, I'm DONE with Nextdoor.
In the six months I was there, my posts were always within the guidelines and respectful and helpful, but I think now that I contributed more to the site than I ever got out of it. Why bother trying anymore when so few appreciate the effort, what a colossal waste of time that was. The site's only as good as the numbers of people who sign up for and actually use it, but if they allow unhelpful and abusive members to run it, then no one will join or stay.
Nextdoor seems like a good idea in theory, but BAD in practice If you like being harassed by your neighbors, then this is the place for you.
This is absolutely the worst website, run by the worst people. A Nextdoor employee in my neighborhood repeatedly harassed neighbors, including a sweet elder lady who posted about her missing dog. This company clearly is funded by someone with an ulterior motive, to influence elections and whatnot, because the leads carefully filter any posts that have to do with local issues to only allow one type of voice on the site. I strongly urge NO ONE to be a part of this website or company in any way.
I am a community activist and human rights advocate who does ongoing work both locally and internationally. Because I am in the process of facilitating several new projects I thought I would connect with a few additional social networks. Somehow I an across the NEXT DOOR group and signed up. WHAT A MISTAKE THAT WAS. Giving my name and contact information was not enough, I was asked for proof of my name and thus asked to provide a government ID and if I did not my account wold be blocked. I explained that I am a artist, writer, and independent journalist and would prefer to just use only a part of my name which is how I am addressed and reorganized in the broadcasting and entertainment world. My name is also an African name ( Khemetic and Shona) and often mispronounced so again to just use a potion of it has proven to work best. I explained all of this to the NEXT DOOR person/administrator that I had been communicating with but he made it very clear that I had to follow the procedure he had indicated. I asked if this was something that was dome with others and he responded that it was the policy. Needless to say, I tld NEXT DOOR, no thank you and to take me off of their listing.
I have never heard of anything like this in all the years I have been involved with social networking and community organizing.and certainly would not encourage or suggest that anyone put up with nonsense such as this
The final analysis for me is that THIS "NEXT DOOR" STUFF SOUNDS LIKE/SEEMS LIKE DISCRIMINATION TO ME

People need to understand what this site is all about. This includes the "leads" as well as all of the neighbor participants. What it is is simply a means to locally share information and get to know your neighbors. As with all things that involve people, things can go wrong quickly if people aren't respecting each other and treating each other with kindness and understanding. The "lead" is only the lead because that person decided to start that neighborhood on the Nextdoor site.
I recently started our neighborhood on the site with the sole intent of neighbors getting to know neighbors and forming a watch program. So far all the participants have been very kind. If the kinds of things I read about on these reviews start to occur, then obviously I am tasked with keeping things civil. It is also my responsibility to be a leader and not take advantage of this position for my own personal gain.
My point is, the Nextdoor neighborhoods are started and controlled by the people in each neighborhood. The site is just a tool we use to share information. The "site" is only as good as we, the participants, make it.
I have been using this site for about 2 years. The leads are lazy and do not keep up with the guidelines. Therefore, there is a lot that people just put up, which is very against the guidelines. The actual area perimeters were stretched too far south so that the founder, who set up the perimeters, could include his pals. Ridiculous. On and you can only be a "lead" if your child attended the elite private school in the area or if you are related to the founder. Such bulls%t!
Yes like most of the Review are full of thugs and well asshats.
I Deactivated my account about 30 minutes ago.
Hear is the deal I have made it clear that I am dyslexic and suffer from asbergers so my spelling will be bad and so will my gramer. (now mind you in Utah they have the highest levels of autistic people in the US. (No I am not from this state but do live there now)
There leads tend to ridicule people with disabilitys wall sitting on there high on there lead throne.
What got me to disable my account not only was that treatment I got but the people who use it think they are better then the rest of us. I posted about a homeless shelter going in We are in the county seat and there is none in the county (For that mater there is no battered person (I cant stand it that there are so few for men too or funds to put them in a hotell room (there numbers are small but still)) and all the people did was $#*! about my spelling and the homless need to be sent some where other then hear (now we are talking about only 400 beds and it was for primly families.
So keep this in mind some areas might be good but most will not be and there is no way to deal with the locale leads if there is a problem with them.
I feel it is next-doors plan to jest make problems and power struggles.
IF you are thinking of it for knowing about crime there are web sites and apps that will do that and take no information from you (Well GPS and or IP to locat the area you are in)
PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM NEXTDOOR. This website has accomplished none of its listed goals for community. At our HOA neighborhood, it is simply a platform for people to harass, accuse, blame, and insult others (see photos). There are many examples, these are just two showcasing public humiliation and release of confidential board business on this forum by a Lead, not even a board member! The funny part is this individual was finally removed from Nextdoor, then re invited under a different name. ( How was that a solution?) People are being misinformed through this website and bullied. The current board has reached out to customer service many times, with no solution to end this constant feud. Where is the executive management? Why don't these individuals step up and take responsibility for the company they started?
If you are a townhouse association... DO NOT USE NEXTDOOR! It will ruin your community if you have a few residents that have nothing to do but complain about every tiny little thing. These type of people enjoy this website to stir up issues that are false. We have a great board that keeps our property looking beautiful and under budget. I am the Lead on this site and Nextdoor will not do anything to eliminate one person that has caused only friction in our community. Our Board of Directors has even emailed Nextdoor to eliminate this one person who has cost us money! We now starting to see people in our community delete their accounts because of this one person and Nextdoor still won't do anything about it. Biggest mistake we did was to introduce this site to our community.
I going to stick with my communities managed board. Some many other sites allow you do setup the same thing w/o all the drama.
My experience might not be the same as everyone else.
FYI: I asked for my family to be removed.
(1) Your neighborhood board is only as good as the community leader. If you don't agree with him/her, Nextdoor will kick you from the board, zero questions asked, without reading your posts to see if what people say is true. Sad, I made approximately 50 posts... none of them bad, but I was kicked for reason #3.
(2) People who have the same opinion on the board tend to congregate there. Our board was taken over by ~. 05% of the community. The other 99.5% are not allowed to state their opinion on the board and Nextdoor helps them do that. Social media that is not so social. Most of the community went back to our own managed message board.
(3) You have to use your REAL name. Facebook understands that this shields people in the LBGT community. Also, who cares if you don't use your real name. You have to validate you live in your house... that should b enough. If you are abusive and disrespectful of people on the board, your identity is known. I didn't use my real name because of the passion of some people in my community about lifestyle opinions and I felt threatened. Which I shared with the moderator of our board.
Overall, it could work for your community, but this is a social media company that is not so social.
Write your review to help others learn about this online business's he concept of this site is s good one. My problem is though I have addressed issues undef the correct category, I am catching out HOA BOD either not answering a question or a few have turned out to be incorrect answers. My Lead is married to a BOD and guess what? I just was suspended. I posted several messsged, even asking the lead for advice on the wording, ended up deleting it and still was suspended. Discrimination. Fyi there are many attorneys that specialize in HOA's gone wild. It's a big business. Waiting on a reply from Nextdoor. So at this time I'm not sure they are to blame at all.
SO much is filtered by the leads. While I was a lead on the site I kept a standard of keeping all information posted. Within 24 hours of my resignation not only were posts deleted from the boards, but other leads were removed as lead so that full control could be had by a group of friends. I no longer feel safe on this site.
Answer: The negative reviews are honest reactions to being duped into sharing too much personal information (that Nextdoor now owns and will NEVER delete and will continue to sell to advertisers until your dying day) to join a site that seems friendly on the surface, but which does NOTHING to protect users. I was bullied by a convicted murderer, who is a Lead in my neighborhood--and I was banned from the site for complaining. Leads are nothing more than early adopters of the site who have been assigned power over other users so that Nextdoor does not have to police it's own site. In short: No. The negative reviews are not wrong. Heed them! I wish I had known before it was too late!
Answer: Forget about nextdoor and leads. Get a life, a real one. Don't waste your time with toxic online communities that tend to get the worst out of people. My advise is run away while you still have some dignity left.
Answer: Kay is right. That is their policy. However, don't expect them to hold to it. We have leads unfairly removing only some people's comments and Nextdoor does nothing about it. Best bet, dump nextdoor.
Answer: Neighborhood. Rocks is in development. Another 6 months.
Answer: Truth is like oil and water. As long as the scam artist have enough venture capital (other people's money) they will continue to shake the bottle leaving it a murky view obscuring the truth. Run out of cash, they'll be exposed for the incompetent boobs they are and the top dogs will clear out their bank accounts and move on to the next scam. One look at their "leading edge tech" pulled right out of the 1980's is proof enough they will die in the tar pits just like the fellow dinosaurs. Want a state of the art app? Check out https://wiggio.com or www.neighborhoodlink.com
Answer: Dallas, SiteJabber rates it at 16%. It would surely rate lower if there weren't so many fake positive reviews. Folks review Nextdoor either 1 or 5. The fives read like ads about Nextdoor's features and potential. The ones are written by real people and give accounts of how awful their experiences were.
Answer: Several other reviewers on this site have had the same thing happen to them. We have been fully banned from nextdoor (beyond just "suspension"), but they keep our profiles, and sometimes our names still appear in the neighbor registry. They refuse to remove us fully, I suppose, in an attempt to misrepresent our endorsement and participation there. It's clearly unethical, but their TOS states that they can do this, as any nd apologist will point out.
Answer: Here's a tidy answer from corporate... Hi Colleen, Thanks for getting back to me. Our Community Guidelines prohibit posting about Lead activity on the main newsfeed. If your Leads are inactivate and youre concerned about moderation in your neighborhood, you should reach out directly to Nextdoor Support. If you have any specific concerns I can help you with at this time, please let me know. Best, Amanda Nextdoor However, the minute you alert corporate to issues with leads in your community you'll find your account terminated. They are very protective of the information surrounding who really is controlling the activities on the boards. Most people in my community are under the misguided impression that corporate is in control. They don't even consider it is their neighbor who sits in judgement.
Answer: Nextdoor wants your full legal name, house number and address and your email address that they link all together. As an added bonus... They have a little map that you can click on. That way if, OMG, you offend someone the little map leads them straight to your house. Run, do not walk, away from this site. No good comes from Nextdoor.
Answer: Your name and address will be known to everyone who uses the NextDoor application and website. I don't suggest using it. I recently discovered that low income apartments in ghetto areas might be able to use the application to do crime. Car theft, asaaults, kidnapping and just about everything else under the sun.
