I ordered a violin, the book on strings, and two chin pads with Johnson String ans I have to say I am very pleased with the items so far. Needless to say, my daughter is VERY excited to play the instrument.
The string cleaner for violin is so much easier to use than just a rag. It cleans the entire string of rosin. It is awesome.
I needed a center chin-rest. They have an adjustable model at the price point I was looking in ($20-30). The order came within a week. In the online description it said it was made from some new age material. Looks like and feels like plastic, but it'll work alright. The height is adjustable by switching out a couple of pieces. That adjustability was the selling point. I also found I really like the contouring where the chin actually rests. Comfortable, and helps me hold up my instrument easily without strain or discomfort. Found this company through a link from a YouTube video. Took a chance. Glad I did. They did well. Thanks!
I place an order for a book for my son's Orchestra class. I normally order everything on Amazon but I couldn't find what I needed there. So I ordered from Johnson strings and everything went smoothly. It is legitimate and reliable. I will definitely order from them again!
My online purchase experience has been excellent. However, my experience with the Carriage House store has been more mixed. I was thinking about buying quite an expensive instrument. I found the sales associate I interacted with to act as though I were doing him a favor by purchasing with them. He was slow to write back, brief in what he wrote, and not very friendly. I ended up purchasing the instrument from someone else, who was much more welcoming and really appreciated the purchase.
Easy and trustworthy. The process was easy and the instrument was received at my daughter's school. Everything was in good condition.

I have ordered from Johnson Strings a few times. For my most recent order, they forgot to let me know that my order shipped and therefore also did not give me a shipping number. I emailed them a week after my order to ask whether my order had shipped yet or when it would ship, at which point I was told the order would arrive that very day. Everything in the package was as expected except that one of the rosins I ordered was very cracked. JSI contacted me the day after I complained to let me know that they are replacing it. Although I am disappointed by their failure to let me know my package even shipped, this is the only time it has happened so far out of 5 or 6 orders I have made and their customer service was responsive and prompt each time. I suppose I would still give them an overall 5 stars given both problems with this order were resolved promptly and my other 5 or 6 orders have gone fine.
Also, their "Adjustable Musician's Seat" cello chairs have been my favourite chairs for cellists for some time. I highly recommend those for cellists and harpists.
The rosin came to my house quickly and was in great condition. Price was fine. This survey & it being mandatory is ludicrous.
I received my cello case in a timely manner, and I was happy to see that it was checked for quality before it shipped to me. They put extra care in packaging the case for shipping which I greatly appreciated.
I've ordered a handful of items from Johnson Strings in the past few years, and it makes life so much easier than commuting to the nearest violin shop (in my case, +1.5 hrs away). Thanks for the new Larsen's!

Answer: Southwest Strings and Johnson String Instruments share some products and sometimes have different prices for the same product. Southwest Strings does have a smaller selection, but they have free shipping on everything.
