Certificate Shipping
January 8, 2017

Very very disappointed. The course in general was easy for me and the website is well structured. However they didn't ship my certificate on time. I finished my course on Jan 2nd (Monday) and had chosen 2 day express delivery. I mentioned my court due date was the 10th. They didn't process my shipping till the 6th. 7th and 8th is weekend. I am receiving my certificate on the day it's due at the court. Thanks iDriveSafely. Why the hell did I pay extra $20 for express delivery if you are not gonna process it on time?

I am terribly sorry that your certificate was not printed and mailed as soon as you completed your course. Unfortunately, one of our printers malfunctioned over the holiday weekend, which led to some Virginia certificates not being printed correctly. We are terribly sorry for the inconvenience. I have submitted a request to have your shipping upgrade refunded. I hope that this helps to alleviate the inconvenience.

DO NOT use the voice recognition verification system. It is terribly inconsistent. I am literally sitting in the same room, at the same desk, in the same chair, holding my phone with the same hand on the same side of my face. I am not using a headset. I am speaking with the same vocal cadence. I have failed the voice recognition twice already.

I just completed Chapter 5 of the course and called iDriveSafely customer service to see if there is anything else I can do to prevent myself from having to take the course over again.
Customer service basically said "Sorry. It's a sensitive system and there's nothing we can do about it. Even something as simple as a fan can set it off."
I am probably going to have to take this course all over again. Learn from my misfortune, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, avoid the voice-verification. Take your chances with the keystroke thing. Or, like me, if I fail it again, get a refund and take the test the old-fashioned way at the DMV.

I used to think there was nothing worse than the DMV, but now there is -- iDriveSafely's voice recognition.

Avoid at all. Voice identification does not work about 1/2 way into course.

You set up voice identification. You start the course, you get asked to verify voice after each chapter and all is good. At about chapter 5 your voice identification starts failing no matter what, and then you're forced to restart after 4 failed attempts. The course itself is not bad, but it's worthless if you can't even take the exam since their voice recognition system does not work. I called costumer service and they gave me a lot of excuses as to why I might have failed the voice test. Maybe your phone, maybe the room, maybe it was not quiet enough... (I even turned off the air conditioning system)If you're system is that sensitive then it does not work. By the way I was told there is no way to reset the voice identification half way. You must fail it 4 times then restart the course, and hope it does not happen again.

I would like to apologize for the dissatisfaction that you experienced with the New York State DMV-mandated authentication systems and that you found yourself among the 1%-5% of students who experience an issue with the system. The NY DMV requires that we use these authentication systems and that they are set to the exact parameters set by the NY DMV. Unfortunately this means that we cannot adjust them or change them in any way, or else we would no longer be able to offer classes in New York. The information about the authentication system and the automatic course failure caused by failing too many authentications is explained on our website at https://www.idrivesafely.com/defensive-driving/new-york/pirp/faq/?vID=z2Xb&eID=860#ci-q9. This information is also included in the Terms and Conditions for all of our New York courses, which one must read and agree to in order to complete registration. The applicable section reads as follows: "AUTHENTICATION STUDENT understands that for identity verification purposes, the COURSE PROVIDER may utilize one or all of the following methods for ensuring the identity of the course participant: 1.) The COURSE PROVIDER shall include voice authentication process to be answered at the beginning of the course. STUDENT will be required to meet a minimum of 7 voice validation requirements throughout the course in order to validate the personal identity of the STUDENT. 2.) During registration, if STUDENT is unable to successfully enroll in the voice authentication process, a secondary keystroke biometric process will be implemented. In this instance the COURSE PROVIDER shall include keystroke biometric authentication process to be answered at the beginning of the course. STUDENT will be required to meet a minimum of 7 keystroke validation requirements throughout the course in order to validate the personal identity of the STUDENT. Failure to provide the correct voice pattern or keystroke imprint results in authentication failure. STUDENT shall have two chances to fail authentication, after which he/she is logged out of the course thereby losing credit for all sections completed to that point. STUDENT will be redirected to registration pages and he/she will have to re-register and restart the course from the beginning." I was on chapter 5 and I failed the voice recognition past chapter 6 and then failed chapter 7. I used the my cell phone sitting in the same spot when making all the calls. I just wasted 5 hours to be kicked out of the program Use a different company because there was no reason why I would fail my own voice recognition. Don't waste your time with this company.

The program itself is ok and was a good price. However, we needed a duplicate copy of the certificate of completion for insurance purposes and they say it expires after 6 months and they can no longer send a copy. It's been less than a year. This is ridiculous. I have more children. I will not use this program again.

After 5 hours I got to the 7/8 section of the defensive driving course and failed the voice recognition verification. Their voice recognition system clearly sucks. I was in the same room with no background noise and I called from the same number like they suggested. I called customer service and got some lady that was probably in India who blamed it on New York State & told me she could do nothing for me and that I had to start the course over. I told her I wanted a refund and she said it would take 7 DAYS! Wasted 5 hours of my life what a rip off.

I am terribly sorry that you experienced trouble with the NY DMV-mandated voice verification system. Unfortunately, while the voice verification system is maintained by us, its requirements and parameters are set by the NY DMV itself. We cannot vary from these parameters or adjust the system in any way not in line with the state regulations, else we would no longer be able to offer courses in the Empire State, this is not an attempt not to take any blame for any inconvenience this may have caused you, but to explain that the law in New York is very clear and we cannot adjust the system in any way because to do so would be illegal. I hope that you agree that breaking the law is not within our remit and thus believe me when I tell you that I am very sorry that you were inconvenienced and suggest that you contact the NY DMV to let your dissatisfaction with the system known. The Customer Service Agent you spoke to was not in India, and your contention that it is suggests that you did not read our website where it clearly explains that our offices are in Texas and California, neither of which are in the nation of India, and if we happen to have Indian-American employees, we are at a loss of why that would be a bad thing as they are US citizens just like I am and I assume you are as well. The information about the NY DMV requirement that one restart the course is they fail authentication too many times is mentioned in the Terms & Conditions for the course, which one must indicate that one has read and agreed to during registration, as well as on our website at https://www.idrivesafely.com/defensive-driving/new-york/pirp/faq/?vID=z2Xb&eID=860#ci-q9. I apologize for any confusion about this information you may have had when you read it initially. The time it takes for your refund to be processed is actually up to your bank or credit card as your refund processed through our system within 24 hours of it being issued. I suggest that you contact them if you would like to let them know that this is not satisfactory. If you would like more information about these NY DMV regulations, please feel free to contact me at the email address below. Thank you. Joe Tracey, Social Care Specialist, [email protected]

Update - idrivesafely
October 4, 2016

These people continually blame DMV or a misunderstanding of their Term of Conditions for their faulty system. Just fix your voice recognition system to recognize voices! Seems simple enough, right?! Wrong! They seem to think we are to dense to understand that in there long winded explanation that they are trying to shift the blame to the user or DMV! They even tried to charge me twice and for twice as much when I logged back in! When I called, customer service said it was my computer doing it! Can you believe it?! It was then I asked for a refund. For the sake of your stress levels, look elsewhere. I recommend National Safety Council. I gave idrivesafely one star for promptly refunding me

I had the same experience that others did in that the I Drive Safely course has an identity verification system that is doesnt work. It failed to recognize me and then i tried the keystroke system which also failed. I was kicked off the course and told to start from the beginning. "nothing we can do" is what I was told by "Customer Service". They blame it on NY state. Wont take responsibility for their own lousy software or third party vendor whoever is running the voice recognition thing. Terrible and soooo frustrating. I hate this company. Please don't waste your time with them.

I was reading all the bad reviews and I'm not sure how some folks ended up with the fails. I find idrivesafely's exam and course prep acceptable. Of course this is a DMV exam and it is super boring. Basically, as a licensed driver one should already know most of the rules so going thru the course should be a breeze. So I just looked over the refresher sections and just scanned thru it. So just make sure you have a good mouse and your index finger ready to click thru the exam parts. I complete those first and if I fail then you just read over the course material for review. This should prep you enough for the finals. I have taken idrivesafely's courses over the years and i have always been successful. I like the convenience it provides. Those that are unsure of online exams should try out the tons of online questionnaire's prior to purchase. I did this when I had to take my class b at the DMV. DMV questions are tricky. So again, this is boring but it works. You can save the sections you go over if you don't wanna do a marathon. You don't need to be tech savvy but I suggest you to have basic skills, I've read reviews where people had issues with Windows closing on them or getting a 0%. If any of this might be an issue for you then maybe just do a live course because in the end it's important one must pass the exam. Good luck!

Broken system
September 13, 2016

I spent 1.5 hours on this section alone I was maybe two minutes from completing it before it decided to close itself and restart. They said this would be a 6 hour course, I started at 11 morning and it is currently 8PM and I am on the third to last unit. Absolutely ridiculous that it doesn't save progress automatically after every section in the unit. What a complete waste of time this is.

I apologize that you experienced issues with your course, especially as our courses actually save one's progress in real time. That being said, if one chooses to close a window rather than click the "save and logout" link, one's most recent progress could be lost, which is why we include that link on every page of the course. Your system crashing near the end of the course sounds like a hardware issue, a runtime error, or possibly a browser error. You may want to have your computer looked at to make sure it does not occur again.

As too the length of the course, without knowing exactly which one you are taking, I can tell you that 6 hours is the minimum time it takes to finish a course, but it may take longer depending on the individual. I apologize for any confusion about this you may have had after reading the information about the course on our website.

If there is anything else we can do to be of assistance, please feel free to contact me at the email address below. Thank you.

Horrible prep for actual DMV test. Content is very incomplete. My son was passing all quizzes/tests online with 90-100% and failed at the DMV.

Date of experience: September 2, 2016
Hue R. — iDriveSafely Rep

(I have edited my original response due to new information. The original one can be found below the new response.)

I apologize, but as your review made it sound as if your son had used our practice tests and the 1 hour prep course for the actual exam, my original response was based on that assumption. My apologies.

The course your son took, the California Standard Driver's Education Course is a very different thing. The material that course covers is exactly what the CA DMV mandates be covered in driver's education courses in California, We have no control over those regulations as they are set by the CA DMV itself. The course your son took is approved by the CA DMV, in part because the material presented in it is the exact same information that is presented in all driver's ed courses in California, with no subtractions or additions.

My offer of a refund was based on the language in your review and if you re-read my response, you will see that I am referring to our practice exams and prep courses which your son did not use or take, as you are aware. I apologize for my confusion but I feel that based on the language you used, my mistake was just that and not purposeful or malicious. I am very sorry for my confusion.

The Terms and Conditions for the course your son took, which you indicated that you had read and agreed to during registration makes our refund policy for said course very clear. The applicable section reads as follows:

CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICIES
It is important to us that you are satisfied with your purchase. If you change your mind about the course, we'll refund the full cost of the course purchased on our website within thirty (30) days of purchase. Refunds will only be issued if the course has not been completed. We will issue your refund within thirty (30) days of your request.

Because your son completed his CA DMV approved driver's ed course and passed the final exam with a score above the required 80%, which is not a practice test for a permit, but a final exam for the DMV-approved course, we cannot offer you a refund for his course, based on the above refund policy.

Had your son taken our exam prep course or practice exams, we would be happy to offer you a refund but the course he took is in no way designed to prepare one for the exams, but to meet the CA DMV requirements for all teens in California to be eligible for a driver's license. My apologies.

If you would like more information about the course he took and how it is not one of our exam prep courses but a CA DMV-approved driver's ed course, please email me at the address below. Thank you.

I have added this response to my original one, due to my original response being given under the assumption that your son took our practice exams and prep course, not one of our CA DMV-approved driver's ed courses.

(Original Sept. 2,2016 response)
I am very sorry that you felt that the CA DMV Permit Exam Practice Tests that your son took did not prepare him for the actual CA DMV permit exam. The questions on our practice exams are directly based on the actual CA DMV permit exams and our preparation courses are based directly on the information found in the official CA DMV Handbook. Our practice exams are not exact copies of the CA DMV permit exams as that would be a violation of California law.

I am very sorry for any inconvenience you feel that this may have caused you and if your son took the preparation course as well as the practice exams, please email me at the address below and I will be happy to provide you a refund. If he only took the practice exams without the preparation course, we cannot offer a refund as the practice exams alone are not designed to be instructive and thus carry no guarantee of passing the actual exam. Thank you.

I am very sorry that you were dissatisfied with your course. Unfortunately, the state-mandated authentication systems are required by, and regulated by, the state and we are legally bound to use the systems as designed without changing them in any way.

We include information about these systems both on our website and in the Terms and Conditions one must read and agree to during registration. I apologize for any confusion you may have had when you read this information and for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS
August 17, 2016

The I Drive Safely course has an identity verification system that is faulty and unreliable. I initially signed up using their voice recognition method. Once the course was started I was prompted to call a number and asked to repeat a phrase. The voice recognition system did not work at all for me and kept me on an endless loop of trying to repeat the phrase. I called the customer service department and was directed to switch to the keyboard pattern recognition system. I did this and successfully completed about 75-80% (five hours) of the course over a few days. However, on Day 5 the system failed to recognize my keystrokes and blocked me from continuing my course. Phone calls to customer service were to no avail. They appear to have no back up system whereby they can verify my identity (i. E. security questions) and told me I would have to start the course over again.
This situation is absolutely inexcusable from a customer service standpoint. I completed the course work that was given to me, passed the quizzes and used their identity recognition program as directed. The failure is in the software that I Drive Safely uses. I did not fail anything. However, I was told that the only way to get credit for the work I have done is to repeat the entire course from the beginning. Of course, no one could reassure me that I would, indeed, be safe from the random failure of their system to recognize me. The risk of this system failing to recognize me again and not giving me credit for my work is too high and I will absolutely not take the course again. I asked IDS for a refund and received it the same day. But those are 5 hours I'll never get back.
This was one of the most discouraging, frustrating, infuriating consumer experiences that I have ever encountered. That is saying a lot since I have lived in New York City for 20 years.

I would like to apologize for the dissatisfaction that you experienced with the New York State DMV-mandated authentication systems.

The applicable section reads as follows:

"AUTHENTICATION
STUDENT understands that for identity verification purposes, the COURSE PROVIDER may utilize one or all of the following methods for ensuring the identity of the course participant: 1.) The COURSE PROVIDER shall include voice authentication process to be answered at the beginning of the course. STUDENT will be redirected to registration pages and he/she will have to re-register and restart the course from the beginning."

I apologize for any confusion you may have had when reading this information during registration and for any inconvenience that may have caused you.

Everyone else here keeps complaining about all the prices and the time they have to wait for things. They say it's boring and you can't go at your own pace. I live in Texas and I have a 90 time period in which I have to complete the course. By far this has been the easiest and most reliable course I have taken. Sure there is a timer on each page which you have to wait for, but in Texas a defensive driving test must be a minimum of 6 hours so I understand why the timer is there whether I read fast or not. As for the price, 25$ for my course or 45$ for both my course and driving record? That's outstanding! The course use to cost 100$ and if you were doing this for a traffic ticket then between court costs and the course you would for sure pay more than your ticket but it wouldn't go on your record. Now I get on the site again and I am able to pay 55$ less and I get the option to do text or video?! It use to only be 1 way and that was some text and some video. When it comes to ideivesafely.com I give them a 5 star 2 thumbs up and refer them to anyone I know who is doing defensive driving. If you want to have fun during this course then I guess you shouldn't use them but the idea is to learn how to be a defensive driver not how to joke about safety on the road.
