I first used id.me over 2 years ago to verify as a veteran. The last 2 months I've used it to identify and verify with the IRS the process seemed at first somewhat confusing and at times very nerve wracking. It was not until I reached out to support and completed a video chat did everything finally come together. Another reason I signed up was to be able to identify as a US citizen for working abroad.
When interacting with this service, my first sign should have came from the site not being able to verify me through my phone number. The second sign was the agent not accepting "to access the IRS website" as being a reason to verify me. Using this service is a requirement to access the IRS website. Lastly, the whole experience was for nothing because I am unable to access the IRS website without going to a IRS office and providing my id to prove my identity (error code 2004). For now, I would suggest paying the IRS by check until they can get rid of this data broker disguised as some kind of benevolent service.

I groan every time I come across a service that requires I use ID.me. I usually have to take the selfie over and over; it's never quick and easy. This time I ended up in a loop that kept sending me back to the website homepage; I never completed the task for which I was visiting the site.
The phone wait takes well into forever - even when you are organized and have all your docs and know how to use your Smart Phone. The process itself isn't difficult but slow is a polite way to describe it. I sold a house and bought another one last year when I retired and downsized. All offers and closing docs were done with a smart phone (except a few sales docs that had to be notarized) and 100% of both transactions put together took less than half the time and were less confusing.
That said if you wait them out and actually get to the video chat, the person on the other end of the line is very clear and efficient and courteous.
The process took somehow longer, but I can vouch it is impossible or super hard to cheat this system.
