I was happy to know there's additional security through the IRS but people should know it may take a while for the photo upload process to successfully work. Attempted several times with my smart phone but was not successful and had to use my laptop.
I spent hours trying to verify my ID and my husband had the same issue on the same day. I called SS daily for 3 days trying to get help with the website and sign up for Medicare part B. The first day I waited on the phone for nearly and hour, and gave up. The second day, Same experience. The third day, I waited 3 hours and 10 minutes before I gave up. The 4th day, I called my local SS office and got through in less than an hour. We went to the local office and got it done, but it was not done right. I entered the correct date to start Medicare part B online. But the SS agent challenged that date because it was 2 months prior. She said if I enter that date, I will have to pay 3 months of premiums. Which was correct. But she said, Are you sure, because you only have to pay 1 month if you change the date. So I changed the date. And it was the wrong thing to do. She said it could not be undone.

The federal government forced me to use ID.me to take pictures of my identification as well a video of myself directly through ID.me. This was not voluntary and says specifically on IRS.gov website you are REQUIRED to make an ID.me account. Further privatizing the federal government.
I do not work for any company contracted with ID.me and to suddenly have a private for profit company take control over my ability to simply view a federal government website so I can manage my taxes is very disturbing and offensive.
Whatever personal information ID.me accessed through my computer and phone is very upsetting. I do not know who else ID.me will assuredly be selling my private tax information and anything else they gather.
ID.me made a complicated identity verification process really smooth. Their site walks you through the steps, helping you take and upload images, as well as the "Live" confirmation (a selfie video analyzing your face). The identity verification itself is very thorough, correlating documents, credit reporting, and biometrics. It makes access to SSA (and your sensitive personal information) very secure. As long as you have a cell phone with internet service this was setup very quickly and easily. You really only need a front and back photo capture of your Drivers License or State ID and follow the instructions and you will have a safe and secured online account without worry
I was filling for unemployment and I had to go to id.me to answer some questions. I also had to do a quick video chat, and that went well. The guy was very helpful and nice to me, and was very patient while helping me. I was able to keep moving forward with the process of getting all the rest of the other things done for filling.
