I tried to use this for my taxes in 2021 and it never did work. I had be to a video of myself. This time it was a selfie and was super easy.
The ID.me identity verification process was very straightforward. It was a prerequisite for filing a form with the New Jersey Taxation authorities. It required that I use my smartphone to take photos of two identification documents and upload them. After the uploads ID.me prompted me to get on a video call with a representative. That went smoothly, as well. All in all it was a quick process, which was a pleasant surprise. In this day and age, I'm glad to see such a robust process being used for identity verification.

It took forever to get through the verification process. Selfies, pictures of documents, questions, back and forth from phone to computer. After is was all done and over with, the IRS never received the information for verification and I had to call the IRS and do their verification. This was a huge waste of time. I do not recommend this service.

A surprisingly lengthy process made needlessly frustrating by the fact that I had no idea what each step of the process required and what documents were needed beforehand. I found some of the instructions provided within the steps to be inadequate. If it had not been absolutely necessary for me to sign up, I would have exited the process without completing it.
So I won't lie it took me some time to do everything but it was worth the wait. The video call doesn't take long and then as soon as some cam.get into ssa.gov.
