My experience was surprisingly easy. Especially with me being quite inept at using Internet or the web, for the smallest task.
I needed to update my sign in to Social Services and their site gave me two choices. I live abroad and I didn't see any recommendation between the two choices - maybe my fault. The other choice worked for my spouse's account but completely blocked on my account, ID.com worked first try ( but be patient!)
My camera wasn't working, I had granted all the necessary permissions, but the camera was still dead. The employee patiently helped me turn the camera on. My English is terrible, but the employee patiently helped me. Thank you!
I would use five stars, giving it four stars because of the difficulty on using the site to get to what you need only if you're not computer savvy this then you would have a problem if you're good with computers and good navigating through a computer then it's actually pretty good It keeps your information safe.
The person on the phone didn't speak English enough to communicate what needed to happen for me to complete the ID process. Would some explain why it's ok to hire someone who can't speak English and why a valid military ID isn't sufficient for verification!
First upload the documents. Drivers license and Social Security card. Then they want to see your w2 after doing some sort of facial recognition.
After all that you have a video call and physically show them your documents.

After having an issue establishing identity verification on my SSA account due to a phone verification matter, problem was easily resolved by the professional agent at ID.ME.

Needed to use ID.me to log on to a website. Went through the ID.me process but got an error message but no further info why there was an error and how to fix it. Had to spend considerable time trying to figure it out and finally after emailing ID.me they said to use their chat agent process which in itself was time consuming and started out with an interaction with an AI agent that had no clue as to how handle the issue.
Sometimes the authenticator fails, and re-registration is required - no explanation. Refuses to accept certain email and SMS providers - again, no explanation. Limited to being used on only certain platforms, requiring users to make a purchase of a new device JUST for use of ID.me.
For my spouse, it failed this year after success last year. Why? Who knows. Spouse is dreading the error prone and time consuming [re-]registration process.
This service SHOULD do a better job at NOT being noticed. It should JUST work and be nearly forgotten. Instead it is a dominant pain point in accessing SSA and IRS account information.
No transparency that I have seen regarding back end PII protections.
I really wasn't sure which way to go when offered the two options for signing into my account. I ended up choosing ID.me and found myself jumping through the "hoops" to eventually access it. One thing I must say that the identity checks etc. were quite thorough and I feel good knowing that may account is secure.
My experience with ID.me was very easy, I had no problem entering my personal information or uploaded my photo onto ID.me site. It is friendly user.

ID.me takes an otherwise stressful event a bit easier. When you are curious about the government and you want to know what they are "doing" relative to you. It's not fun. This makes it fast and efficient to get the news. Good or bad!
You WILL receive constant Emails regarding totally unrelated products, sometimes multiple emails each day. I have been registered with this service for over 2 years and am reminded about it and regret it every day! You WILL too!
