I received a letter from the IRS regarding my tax return. The letter directed me to go to the IRS website. Use the ID me login if I had one and answer a question. That was madness. I went through all the steps, but reached an error code when I went in Under my preestablished account. The second time I went in, I scanned the QR code in the letter and it did take me down a different path, but eventually, I got back to the same place, which was an error code saying that I couldn't get in any further so I felt like I never got past signing in However, later, I check my email and saw that I did in fact verify myself because I wasn't sure whether I had even successfully verified myself because the error code didn't really explain what the error in fact was so then I had to invest a bit more time. Going to a different IRS website Which either directed me to go back down the path of ID me or just wait and see whether my return was coming, so it was completely a ridiculous jaunt through madness and gave me a headache. I hated it every single part of it.

Their site required multiple processing failures, requiring in my case four startovers; repeated sign-in directives even while supposedly already signed in. When FINALLY at the end and having received confirmation of identity verification, I was asked to authorize transmittal of the collected verification data to the IRS. What? Supposedly I had been providing the required information directly to the IRS; but no, it was in the possession of this ID.me company or some other unidentified online entity. When I "authorized" the transmittal, I was then informed my request could not be completed because of "an Issue", unspecified, and to please try again in a few minutes. So who actually received and still holds my personal information I thought I was sending directly to the IRS?
All id verifications will soon use ID.me. I have used it for my Social security verification, lowes military discount verification and other things. Easy to register and use.
Very stressful because of all the trips to get it done we would get as far as taking a picture of my drivers license and could not get any further. It took my drivers license, passport, DD214, my 2026 tax statement and a copy of my electric bill and a video call and FINALLY it was excepted. Crazy.
