Recently, I was released from from my period of incarceration that took me across state lines. During that time my state drivers license expired. I turned 65 shortly before I was released and had planned on applying for social security benefits. To do so I clicked on the ID.me link and attempted to set up an account. I found out that I also needed the same log on authenticator for the VA as well, so it seemed like the right application to sign up for. However, trying to get through with just the documents I had simply would not work; those being prison discharge papers, a prison ID and an expired drivers license.
This should not deter anyone. This is an opportunity to send off and get their birth certificate if they do not have one. But also go through the gauntlet of trying to get a state ID or renew their license. Usually you won't have to take the drivers test and paper exam again, especially if your an older driver.
Obtain all the required documents and try again and again to get through the ID.me process. Each time that you do you learn more which forces you to get your documentation in order. This world is hard enough getting around in and without proper ID it becomes even harder. But eventually, once you have all the proper documents, make time for a video conference to go through the verification process. The agents are very helpful and can provide guidance to a point on your next steps and what sites you will be approved to use ID.me with. It worked for me, it can work for you too.

At first I seemed to be having an issue when I was trying the self service verification. I'm not sure what the problem was with the verification process, so I used the second option to get verified by a representative through a video call. Once I was connected the rep was friendly and as long as you have all the documents to get your identity verified the process goes really quick. I just had to show my documents and answer a couple questions and we were done I was verified. Then I was able to go on about my business.
