The company exhibits a mixed reputation, with notable strengths in customer satisfaction when it comes to specific contractors and service providers, who are often praised for professionalism and quality work. However, significant concerns arise regarding the lead generation service, with numerous customers expressing frustration over poor-quality leads, lack of refunds for invalid contacts, and overwhelming solicitations. Many reviews indicate a decline in service quality following the merger with Angie's List, leading to a perception of the company as unreliable. Overall, while individual service experiences can be positive, systemic issues with lead handling and customer support remain prevalent.

Home Advisor bought Angies List and is working together to scam Contractors. I get leads from Angies List that I pay a monthly fee. I call the customer and set appointment, next thing you know I get the same lead from Home Advisor and I call the customer and ask if they contacted Home Advisor and they say NO I only contacted Angies List. It has happened more then a few times! Why rip us off? We are their bread & butter! We the Contractor pays all their bills and make them profit!
If you are a contractor and Home Advisor is bugging you with promises of a steady lead of eager homeowners... RUN! Do not give these scam artists free reign of your bank account.
They charge you a lead fee to send you homeowner contact info, even if the homeowner is window shopping or simply browsing ideas. When the homeowner doesn't call you back, after several attempts, you're somehow still "ineligible for a refund" of fee HA charged. Customer service promises to send an email of explanation, no email ever comes. They take your money (as well as the money of the two or three other contractors to which they referred that same lead) and they don't look back. They are 100% scam artists.
Do not use this company!
"I won't recommend this company to business owners. I got ripped off for $1000 and all what I received poor customer service. I never talk to as many unhelpful robotic managers unable to help to resolve customers needs and concerns. Sales team trained to tell you beautiful story how they will help you to support your business and not even one word about non-refund policy if they can't provide you service to your expectation! Way to go! WEEEE- take people money and do not take responsibility for not well trained personal. Everyone I spoke to knows only one fraise- " I apologize, no one will be able to help you". Wont be surprised if they go out of business."
After a number of attempts to use this service, I found them no better than 'going it alone' with local contractors. Which is pretty abysmal, to say the least. Professionals (and I use that term loosely) don't show - or disappear - even before a job starts. Don't answer attempts to contact. Or in many cases, HA is unable to produce someone on fairly ordinary jobs, so you're stopped even before yo can begin.
Every HomeOwner that goes to HomeAdvisor for help are all cheap as $#*!! You won't even make enough for a happy meal from McDonald's.
I thought I was calling another carpet cleaning service whom I had used before. However, it was obviously my error and I could not be more pleased. Andrew, the tech, was early, extremely polite, neat and efficient. I was very pleased with this service and will surely use them again.
Wasted two days waiting for someone to repair torn screens. Day one rescheduled just before appointed time. Next day was a no show. HomeAdvisor said they will give me a full refund in 3-5 days. They obviously have major issues. Best advice: AVOID!
Between the yearly fee, the bad leads and the poor quality leads you end up paying them more than you make using their service. They are useless parasites that monopolize web traffic that would have gone directly to your company.
I had a verified appointment with a contractor. The contractor didn't show up at the appointed time because he advise Home Advisor didn't confirm it with him. I took off work to be there for that appointment. I called HA and it sounded like there was a party going on in the background. First the HA advisor couldn't help because he was experiencing computer issues but during the call it came back up. He apologized and wanted to reschedule. I said no because obviously your group didn't do their job and verify with the contractor in the first place. Called corporate to talk to someone in charge. On hold for 15 minutes and couldn't get through. I am in the middle of a large remodel spending over $50K on it. Looking to HA for contractors. I guess HA vendors will miss out of my business because this experience has been frustrating due to the incompetence of Home Advisor. To the management team of HA: please get your act together. This was a frustrating experience.
My husband own a small company and every time I look at the business account, HAdvisor redraw shows up almost every week. The fees sometimes are over $1000. UNFORTUNATELY, my husband doesn't get. It absolutely ridiculous to spend money for leads and not getting any job. The worst is that they send the lead to more than one company. So, if the lead cost $56; all the company that receives the lead get charged that amount whether you get it or not. RIP OFF
After i read a review here I decided not to sign up a membership.its true they love insult people. That is also the reason why i back out and started to read a reviews.im glad i dont sign up
I think home advisor should have some kind of screening process in place for who they give work to. I had an awful experience with a woman name Teresa Williams and her workers doing half a** work. Her whole crew look like a bunch drug using criminals that I would've never hired if I had to go and do the hiring myself which is why I turned to home advisors in the first place. Maybe its a fluke that I got the crew I did for my project but regardless I don't think I will be using home advisor in the future.
As one of the reviewers before me, I have not posted a negative review in my life but this wins the prize.
If you like to keep your hard earn money, stay away from Home Advisor. It is a big scam. The salesman paint you a beautiful picture of how great it is going to be when you sign up. You will increase your profit margin on the jobs because homeowners choose you directly. You will have a freedom of working in whatever area you choose, blah blah blah.
I signed up to fill in any down time we may have as we are quite busy most of the time. When I talked to the sales man, he said we can pause the leads and turn them back on whenever we want to, that turned out to be a lie. The most you can pause the leads is 30 days and they automatically are ON after that. Here is the kicker, they ask you what is your "market match" (the projects that you definitely would like to do i. E: deck, siding, bathroom remodel, etc) and guess what, they send those leads without you even selecting them and you get charged up front.
I have disputed the amounts charged by HomeAdvisor with my CC company and got the money back but guess what, they send those amounts to collection agency, (in sarcastic voice)SHOCKER- right?
Nevertheless, I have not used a single lead from this company and I am light $2,000.
BE AWARE! DO NOT SIGN UP!
HomeAdvisor (formerly ServiceMagic) uses deceptive practices. They will send you bogus leads and a couple of "real" potential customers but they charge you for the fake leads even if you bring it to their attention that the other leads were not real people or real addresses listed. This is downright criminal. They will steal your website traffic, they will sell your information to any 3rd world country who will pay for your information and they will call, text and email you 2, 3, 4 times a day. They are a huge problem why small businesses are failing online. Stay away from HomeAdvisor if you have any common sense, don't become another victim.
I wish I would have done some research on homeadvisor before signing up and paying over $200 for there yearly subscription.
Every time I would reach out to the leads they sent no one would ever respond back I was starting to question if this info was even real to begin with.
Luckily only two people reached out to me and I made my money back and after I made my money back I stopped using HomeAdvisor and would pause the leads and If you aren't on top of it they automatically turn back on and be flooded with 8 leads each costing at $20. Sometimes leads from locations I wasn't able to service would come in.
When I called homeadvisor to cancel my service they said they won't until I pay the outstanding balance of $500+ and I told them I refuse to pay for leads I never reached out to I purposely kept trying to avoid them by pausing the leads and if I wasn't on top of it I would get flooded by leads. They didn't seem to care so I hung up on them and they were still sending me leads. I got so fed up that I turned off the locations I was able to serve And the leads stopped. I now received a voicemail call from a collectors on homeadvisor behalf. So beware and don't ever use homeadvisor.
I joined home advisor several months ago, didn't take long to see that I had been scammed, bogus leads, all dead ends. Asked for my money back, they refused. My credit card company credited my account, now I am being threatened with collections if I don't pay!
We started using homeadvisor a couple years back, the prices for leads were bearable the minimum lead costing around $15, we quit using them because we got busy with new construction work and decided this last year to renew our membership with them so we could gain more service calls, now the minimum price for a lead is $29! You also don't get any options to have your lead credited back like they used to provide. I use be able to get a credit back if someone didn't answer their phone, or if i left a voicemail and my call was never returned. Why should I pay 30-50 dollars for a customer not to answer their phones, its WRONG! When I called to complain about it they were incredibly rude and pretty much said it is what it is. The information they receive is FREE from consumers and they are charging small companies like myself to compete with the larger companies who can afford to dish out 30 dollars a lead and not matter if they win the job or not. I think its disgusting what they are doing and how they are charging contractors, with no guarantees or options to to get your money back on faulty leads. If you enjoy gambling and losing a lot I suppose I suggest this company. STAY AWAY.
8 out if 10 leads are not legitimate. I've had 2 today that weren't legit. Have to argue over credit, dont get it, and still cant get a lead replacement. My 1 year service can't be finished soon enough. HomeAdvisor is a Horrible company, very unethical.
THEY TOOK MY MONEY AND PROVIDED NOTHING. NO PHONE CALL, NO PROFILE SIGNON INFO, NO RECEIPT FOR MY MONEY. I HAVE CALLED FOR A REFUND AND THEY DO NOTHING JUST KEEP YOUR MONEY. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS SERVICE. FRAUDULENT COMPANY. CANCELLED THE ACCOUNT AND WILL CANCEL MY CC. ALSO FIGHTING MY CREDIT CARD TO REMOVE THIS CHARGE. AND GOING TO FILE A POLICE REPORT.
Answer: We had a similar experience when first trying Home advisor out. They kept taking money out of our account arbitrarily. I finally had to file stop payment forms at my bank. Then they threatened us with extra fees unless we "settled" our account. We have strict DTPA laws (deceptive trade practice act) in our state. I advised we complain to our Attorney General about this. I think home advisor should be banned in our state because of this fraud.
Answer: I didn't, they have been blowing my phone up for 6 month's now and now they act like thier desperate for me to sign with them. I have absolutely no want or will i ever sign with them after i have heard what thier doing to contractors who have a contract with them. I just signed with a family owned reality company and even they told me not to sign and even when i tell home advisor i don't want thier business they ignore my request and still call and now they act like thier a home owner requesting painting but once i get to asking where they live or information all of a sudden I'm being told to do a background check and i sign up for free! But i have to pay a percentage of my leads or size of job something of that nature where i pay them for a no guarantee of work as i see it. I can't trust handing money to a company that's being deceitful in a phone call off the rip! Just be careful i don't hear good thing's about them all over now.
Answer: Fake leads, sends email, text & calls between 20-30/day and charges for each. Even if Contractor doesn't open Or answer any calls! Will rip off contractors about $800/day until they catch it and no refunds! Do Not Use HomeAdvisor!
Answer: I don't know about the house cleaners but, I do not trust the company based on my own recent experience.
Answer: You don't know you have to call home advisor and wait on the phone for an hr until they pick up
