The company exhibits a mixed reputation, with notable strengths in customer satisfaction when it comes to specific contractors and service providers, who are often praised for professionalism and quality work. However, significant concerns arise regarding the lead generation service, with numerous customers expressing frustration over poor-quality leads, lack of refunds for invalid contacts, and overwhelming solicitations. Many reviews indicate a decline in service quality following the merger with Angie's List, leading to a perception of the company as unreliable. Overall, while individual service experiences can be positive, systemic issues with lead handling and customer support remain prevalent.

I am just a regular person who needs information on modest home repairs and home maintenance jobs. I had an emergency recently having to move a heavy cabinet from the front of our house into the garage -- was charged almost $200 and even a $5 "check cashing fee" -- although the job was completed in a timely manner and the contractor was courteous, I feel we were ripped off. Now reading the reviews I understand that I'm probably just a "crappy lead." I will never use Home Advisors again.
Greg Andrews of Starlight Maintenance in Cedar Rapids, IA did window washing inside and out and they just sparkle. He also power washed my house and did a spectacular job. He got rid of mold and mildew on my gutters which were not a guaranteed success, but they are spotless. He, his wife and daughter were courteous, neat and friendly and I am extremely happy with the job he did and would highly recommend them.
We have subscribed as a contractor to HomeAdvisor for the past few years. Their categories are so ambiguous that most homeowners can't find the service they are looking for. They say they will give credit for leads that are not correct or for the wrong category but that is false. They will give credit on one or two and then charge full price and say your account is not in good standing because you requested too many credits. They are a total waste of money! Stay away! Put an ad on Yelp or Craigslist and at least it won't cost you $100 for every wrong lead. We signed up for $200/month and yet somehow end up having over $1000 charged on many months. STAY AWAY FROM HOMEADVISOR if you don't want to waste valuable advertising dollars.
Don't even pay attention to Home Advisor. Just trash it. I had 2 contractors come in through Home Advisors. They are awful. They are useless. That is being generous. I wish I can give them minus 10 but the scale does not allow it.
The system is awful. There is not any benefit for Professionals who work with them. They charge you just for giving customer's number which may be a fake job.
Those of you who are considering using HomeAdvisor need to BEWARE. HomeAdvisor claims to be "free", however, they are being paid by the companies/individuals which are receiving the leads provided by HomeAdvisor. Therefore, HomeAdvisor is pumping out leads (as many as 5-10 per inquiry), with no incentive to maintain an actual database of truly professional contractors. They claim to only use contractors that have been verified (Licensed/Background Check, Etc.). This is not true... they will take anyone who will pay them for the lead. Therefore, they may be sending an inexperienced contractor, or criminal to your home.
I am a contractor who signed up with HomeAdvisor several years ago, as a "safety net", in case the calls slowed down. One of the worst business decisions I have ever made. For the short time I used HomeAdvisor, I was getting duplicate leads, and leads for services I do not provide, and it cost me a fortune.
Their background check consist of the person/company completing a short questionnaire. No verification or true background check is performed. They also do not require contractor's to be licensed, especially in states where licensing of contractor's is somewhat vague or ambiguous.
HomeAdvisor preys on both the homeowners who are too lazy to do the proper legwork to get their projects completed (just like their commercial), and the "so called" contractors who try to build an instant business, without putting in the time and effort to become a true "professional contractor". So are those free contractor "hook-ups" really free?... think about it.
I would advise any homeowner to do your homework yourself (referrals, BBB, local home builders associations, etc.), instead of depending on HomeAdvisor. Your home is probably your biggest asset, so why would you let a company who has no vested interest in your property, select from their limited, mostly low quality contractors, for your projects.
Most true professional contractors do not require lead generators to acquire business. I have been a roofing contractor for over 15 years. In the beginning, I would have used a lead generator such as HomeAdvisor, to get business. But I built my business from the ground up, and no longer require any advertising to maintain my business. Almost all my customers are referrals, or past customers.
This contractor had failed to complete the services for the agreed price. Took full agreed price with the promise he will come and finish the rest. Never showed up despite several reminders. Very dis honesty and deceitfull business practices and I would remove or discourage to include such contractors in your advisor list of recommended sub contractors.
OUR COMPANY SIGNED UP AND WAS GIVEN BAD REFERRALS AND THEY CHARGE FOR THESE INCOMPLETE BOGUS REFERRALS!
This company is will troll you 24/7 until you threaten to call the states attorney on them. The "leads" are about 10% of the time an actual lead. MOST of the leads are people whom have no money to even begin the project they are requesting pricing for. One of my leads was unhappy tenants looking for pricing for maintenance on the building they lived in to take their landlord to court. The HA employees will relentlessly call and abuse you on the phone, offering free leads and then sending them while their accounting department charges for your "free" leads.
Lynch Construction of Hot Springs, Arkansas did an outstanding job of replacing countertops and sinks in two bathrooms (including retouching paint and staining cabinets). Their work was professessional and timely and I would hire them again to do any type of home improvement work.
Needed a Locksmith for our utility room door on our outside patio. The one listing was for "Christopher's Lock and Key". Called and left a message. Chris called back very quickly and arranged to come out. He was here at 9 AM, and had it fixed within 15 minutes. We would recommend him to anyone who needs good service, and a very nice person also.
I am a contractor, pressured to signed a service contract, paid $280 something for one year in Feb. 2019. They forgot to put me on, no one called I called them on May. They agreed to refund me and terminate the contract. I hanged up the phone, seconds after, they sent me three leads, of course I refused. I never received a single called, and I never got a single job. In other words, they never provide me a service. After that, took three phone calls to terminate the contracts. They claimed I had few services. Now, they used collecting agency CMI Credit Mediator to collect $517. 61. 00
I am a reasonable contractor, I will paid for services. They forgot to log me on. I owe them nothing.

Call me and I will tell you the story
I got same day service at a very reasonable price and the work was excellent, I highly recommend this company.
HomeAdvisor is a deadbeat company whose members are deadbeat contractors. I'm not sure what the point is, or is supposed to be, but as other reviewers have pointed out here, they set you up for contractors to meet with you, and the contractors simply never show up. You can get the exact same result by putting an ad on Craigslist for the work you need done!
Charged me bunch of money from day one. Canceled service. Then they sent to collectors to get $300 but collection agency started to ask $900. Don't do business with them. All those guys work on commissions and want to change you as much as they can.
Do not sign up for Home Advisor if you are a contractor. They tell you they will send you quality leads but most of the time the information you received you cannot reach the customer or you reach the customer and they have no idea about the project you're calling them about. You ask Home Advisor for a credit they tried to reach the customer one time and it no answer they did not your credit. But Home Advisors policy is you have to try to reach the customer On two different dates by phone by messaging via email and then 99% of the time they still deny your credit, but like I said they try to contact the customer on one occasion don't reach the customer they deny your credit. How many visor has taken a lot of money from me for false leads. Stay away they are no good for your business.
I received three contractor contacts for my project. One cancelled via e-mail and one scheduled contractor did not bother to show up or contact me to cancel.
I have been with Home Advisor for since 2017 as a pro but am dismayed to be charged for a task my company does not do and then be refused a credit. The client wants a Home Manager, someone to live in the home with their own furniture (not staging furniture) take care of the home while it's for sale and pay utilities, none of which we, nor most stagers, do. Home Managers for realtors are NOT stagers.
Despite this, and after calling customer service, Home Advisor denied my request and kept my money.
Bad business practices, Home Advisor. I am disappointed.
I am a cabinet dealer. I sell cabinets for Aristkraft and other cabinet makers. I recieved a lead for a cabinets and installation. Under my job sevices rendered it is worded "Pre-Manufactured Cabinets- Materials not provided by Consumer" I paid a lead fee(almost $100.00) for a guy who had broken Ikea cabinets that he bought from an individual, That were in his garage. Clearly not a cabinet lead.
I asked for credit... I wish I could copy and paste there no refund line of crap.
I payed for a lead they called cabinets for someone who wanted bunk beds made. Still no credit. I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but I believe that is furniture. Then a gun case... NO CREDIT>
HomeAdvisor is a scam. They just want their hands in your pockets
Work will never get done. No one shows up or cancels meeting at the last minute. I tried several gutter cleaners, general contractors and painters. Most companies are based out of locations far away so no one seems to care about customer service.
Answer: We had a similar experience when first trying Home advisor out. They kept taking money out of our account arbitrarily. I finally had to file stop payment forms at my bank. Then they threatened us with extra fees unless we "settled" our account. We have strict DTPA laws (deceptive trade practice act) in our state. I advised we complain to our Attorney General about this. I think home advisor should be banned in our state because of this fraud.
Answer: I didn't, they have been blowing my phone up for 6 month's now and now they act like thier desperate for me to sign with them. I have absolutely no want or will i ever sign with them after i have heard what thier doing to contractors who have a contract with them. I just signed with a family owned reality company and even they told me not to sign and even when i tell home advisor i don't want thier business they ignore my request and still call and now they act like thier a home owner requesting painting but once i get to asking where they live or information all of a sudden I'm being told to do a background check and i sign up for free! But i have to pay a percentage of my leads or size of job something of that nature where i pay them for a no guarantee of work as i see it. I can't trust handing money to a company that's being deceitful in a phone call off the rip! Just be careful i don't hear good thing's about them all over now.
Answer: Fake leads, sends email, text & calls between 20-30/day and charges for each. Even if Contractor doesn't open Or answer any calls! Will rip off contractors about $800/day until they catch it and no refunds! Do Not Use HomeAdvisor!
Answer: I don't know about the house cleaners but, I do not trust the company based on my own recent experience.
Answer: You don't know you have to call home advisor and wait on the phone for an hr until they pick up
