The company exhibits a mixed reputation, with notable strengths in customer satisfaction when it comes to specific contractors and service providers, who are often praised for professionalism and quality work. However, significant concerns arise regarding the lead generation service, with numerous customers expressing frustration over poor-quality leads, lack of refunds for invalid contacts, and overwhelming solicitations. Many reviews indicate a decline in service quality following the merger with Angie's List, leading to a perception of the company as unreliable. Overall, while individual service experiences can be positive, systemic issues with lead handling and customer support remain prevalent.

All started with home advisor cold sales rep calling us, we denied signing with them on 9 occasions, he kept calling every day for over 3 weeks, then he started calling from blocked numbers when I threatened to get the police involved, now we get a call every day from 10am to 11am, 6 calls total from a blocked number, most likely their own creation - a robocaller that just wastes our time on a clock.
This is a horrible outfit filled with thugs and criminals with technological edge to criminal acts.
Don't sign with them, don't give them your credit card, don't let these criminals take away your business, run run run - now!
I needed some yard work done fast so I went searching online and HomeAdvisor popped up. They could have someone at my house the next week. Awesome. Became a member so they couldn't take the fee right away. That should have been my first clue not to use them. Booked it and didn't hear from anyone. Called them on Sat. And they said, oh yes we have someone coming to your house - it's Company A, here's their phone number. I call Mon. Morning (they were to come the next morning). Company A says, I don't know what you are talking about. Not coming to your house. I call HomeAdvisor again. This time they say, oh no, it's not Company A, but Company B that's coming tomorrow. I call Company B. Talk with Company B, they ask to come early, said that's great it's better for us. Went over everything, he saw the photos I uploaded. Tuesday morning, Company B does not come early, on time, or late. I call HomeAdvisor again. They say oh no, Company C is supposed to be there. I call Company C. He says, no he's not supposed to be there, but he makes it happen. Thank goodness! I will never use HomeAdvisor again.
Oh and, I was told to use their ap to see who was supposed to come and it showed one company I never heard of and Company A. I would like to leave a good review for Company C, but he doesn't show up in my account.
Unprofessional business. Wouldn't take my credit card so I could pay my contractor. He wanted to avoid the 3% upcharge by having me pay through the Home Advisor app. I called customer service while the poor contractor was waiting. The person said I would have to wait 24-48 hrs. To get issue resolved with their website.
The contractor did a fine job, I was so upset about the hitch in paying him.
Cade was very fast and helpful. He found the problem and fixed and told me how to prevent it. Very pleasant. I would use again. There is a$89. Trip fee.
I signed up for this service because they sold it to me as $100 for $300 worth of leads. They told me I could buy more leaves if I wanted them after my $300 have ran out. I paid the $100 click on a couple of the job leads. Next thing I knew they were saying I owe them money. I told him I didn't owe them nothing and I didn't want the service they kept billing me anyway and now it's in collections. When I talk to the representative he started laughing. HomeAdvisor is a scam.
Homeadvisor sounds great and they generate plenty of "leads". What they don't tell you is every time you get a "lead" via email or phone call you are getting charged whether you open or answer the phone. You will receive anywhere from 2 to 10 phone calls a day or emails. There is no bill sent out until right before they send you to collections.
More than half the time the "leads" aren't leads they are just random people who had some how had their info given to homeadvisor through a third party.
I made an appointment to have 2 water spigots either repaired or replaced. The plumber that came out was 5 star,
The problem was with Home advisor. The sent me an invoice detailing $172 for 2 spigots and another $122 for labor. The plumber informed me that I had to supply the spigots myself when he was on site. I had to go to the hardware store and get the parts while he waited in my driveway. On spigot was repaired with seat gaskets. The other one was replaced. How is it that they would set up a job without explaining these details? The worst ever experience.
Signed up as a contractor and they sent projects that were just looking around or not what I asked for and when I cancelled my account they kept billing me and so I cancelled my card and now the collection agency is after me. Such crooks. BEWARE people. Huge disappointment
Home advisor scheduled a tech to mount my TVs and the tech confirmed his arrival as early as 8:30 AM the day the service was scheduled. By 10AM, no one would respond and Home Advisor attempted to reschedule the appointment for another day. Joe and Handy company are completely unprofessional and cowardly... they wouldn't even confirm the cancelation via the same text thread they confirmed hours earlier. Never using either service again!
As a former contractor for Home Advisor I would never recommend the company to anyone. The lead costs aren't realistic compared to the dollar value you may get from a job. If you can actually contact a customer (my experience was 2 contacts in 10 leads) you have to charge more to cover the variable lead fees. Yes, lead fees vary by zip code for the same job. I had to repeatedly call customer service to get a credit for a bad lead. In turn they promised to improve the quality of the leads which never happened. I was told by 3 different reps I would only get a credit... no refund for lead fees. Why would I want a credit for more bad leads? The 2 customers I actually spoke with were great. It's not a customer issue. It's the fact that it's all done online and the customer may not know what is needed for the job. Home Advisor should have a way to get more job information so the contractor and customer know what to expect. Right now Home Advisor does very little to qualify the jobs. They just charge contractors for the leads whether they're good or bad. The system is way overpriced from my perspective.
I dont see how these people sleep at night! I've never posted a public review of a business but this is so bad I had to. I was told by Matthrw that I only pay for accepted leads. It started for a coup! E of days i received 2 leads a day. When attempting to bid on a job it would be either taken, not interested, or someone asking if I can accept a check for $8k and keep $2k for the work then write a check back to him for $6k. This happened on 3 different occassions. When I paused the referrals, not wanting to waste anymore time, I kept getting messages saying "you've been selected by a homewner" I took nor received any of these. I called three times and they assured me I wasn't being charged for the homeowners that were selecting me. Today I received notice that my balance owed to Home advisor is almost $6k. And I had my account on hold the entire time after the first week. And I didn't win not one job! I can't believe there's 1 person that would rate Home advisor 5 stars! If (-5) was an option that's what I would select.
They say that they will give you a $300 credit to get you to start; and instead charge you $300. Then they don't explain how their website works. They load you up with worthless leads, after they get your credit card and fail to work with you to credit bad leads.
Do not get these people, they are not a professional organization. I had a guy come to fix a leak in the toilet. He first tried to talk me into cancelling my appointment and telling them I was not needed. Then he was going to do it for a cheaper price because he says he had to pay a fee. I refused and he fixed the toilet leak but later in the night I woke up and found water all over the bathroom floor. I called him back (he gave me his personal number in case I had any side jobs) and he said he fixed it. But later the leak came back and went downstairs into my kitchen. I called him back and he told me to get a new toilet and he wasn't paying for the damage to the kitchen. I call homeadvisor and they told me to call my insurance company and claim my $1,300 damage with my insurance carrier. After months of emails with a lawsuit possible they sent me a claim form. I filed it three months ago and have heard nothing from their insurance, handyman.com. Now they send me another claim form to sign saying they lost it through covid19. I sent them photos and video.
Trying to get a list of pros is enough to make you tear your hair out. I finally gave up and went back to Angie's List. Got a great list of pros and even greater responses from those I contacted.
Getting signed up takes a lot of your time. Prove who you are, answer a bunch of questions, etc. Then they have to "verify" you. They called me on my business line on a Saturday morning - of course I didn't answer. I called back on the same number later that day -- no answer. Left a message, no return call. Then I got an email that said I wasn't able to use the service, because I wasn't "verified". A few days later I got an email to 'verify', so I called the number & the guy answering had no clue what I was talking about. He wasn't rude or unfriendly - but also not professional or confidence-instilling (sounded like a stoner in his basement). Finally I (apparently) got verified, and asked 2 sets of 3 contractors each - for bids on two separate projects (painting, and floor refinishing). How many bids came back? A grand total of... zero. Then got an email from Home Advisor asking if I'd gotten bids. I said no, and they said they're get right on it. That was a week ago. So, it wasn't a horrible experience, it was a non-experience. Nothing happened. I do get SPAM emails every day from them though...
Dont give those $#*!ker your credit card! Youll be better of working by your self unles you want to waste your money and time help yourself
So it all starts with a Homeadviser sales rep giving you a call, it's a very pushy sales rep with no ethics at all, you can hear the dominance in his voice, he calls you non-stop for weeks until you pick up, when you politely say no to his pushy tactics to sell you leads - he calls back from a different number, then he calls you from blocked numbers and generally stays on the line wasting your time.
Stay away from this fake Chicago Mobsters that are hiding behind blocked numbers, Homeadvisor is not yelp, they are nothing to worry about, trust me, their fake leads will not bring you business.
We on average pay $110 per lead from Home Advisor. We get a hold of about 50% of the leads. Those 50% some are decent and some are crappy and we win some and lose some. The problem is the 50% of the leads that we never speak to. Some customers only put in a letter as their first name or an obvious made up name. Typically those phone numbers don't work or they NEVER answer. You can apply for a credit if both the phone number and email address that the customer provides are disconnected and the email bounces back. So the last credit I applied for had a phone number that said "The person you are calling can not accept calls at this time". I applied for a credit and I was declined. So I messaged their live chat and spoke with DeAnna.
DeAnn: It would appear that the credits department determined that the phone number was in working order at the time of the review.
Me: its disconnected
Me: I just tried the number
Me: and I only applied for the credit 2 hours ago
DeAnna: What does the message say?
Me: The person you are calling cannot accept calls at this time
DeAnna: That does not make the phone number disconnected.
Me: What does it mean?
Me: That's what a phone says when they don't pay their bill - AKA their phone is disconnected
Me: There is no way to contact this lead
DeAnna: This is not something we credit for because the consumer may become available in the future we encourage our professionals to try email to get a hold of the consumer. This is not the same as a disconnect.
You have to fight tooth and nail for them to acknoweldge that their leads were Bogus. That particular lead cost me $117.01- I paid $117.01 for a disconnected phone number. What a joke.
I have to say that HomeAdvisor has to be the worst company I have worked with. As a homeowner, I have had three cancellations for one job. I receive cancellation notices one hour before job is to be started. Yet, they require a 24 hour window for me to cancel before I am charged. Very poor business practices. Won't use them ever again.
ZERO stars to reflect ZERO services rendered.
If you decide to use "home advisor", don't opt for the "prepay and save X amount off your bill" SCAM
My credit union reversed the payment, however, the credit was reversed, deducting said amount from my account... see attached screen shots.
Answer: We had a similar experience when first trying Home advisor out. They kept taking money out of our account arbitrarily. I finally had to file stop payment forms at my bank. Then they threatened us with extra fees unless we "settled" our account. We have strict DTPA laws (deceptive trade practice act) in our state. I advised we complain to our Attorney General about this. I think home advisor should be banned in our state because of this fraud.
Answer: I didn't, they have been blowing my phone up for 6 month's now and now they act like thier desperate for me to sign with them. I have absolutely no want or will i ever sign with them after i have heard what thier doing to contractors who have a contract with them. I just signed with a family owned reality company and even they told me not to sign and even when i tell home advisor i don't want thier business they ignore my request and still call and now they act like thier a home owner requesting painting but once i get to asking where they live or information all of a sudden I'm being told to do a background check and i sign up for free! But i have to pay a percentage of my leads or size of job something of that nature where i pay them for a no guarantee of work as i see it. I can't trust handing money to a company that's being deceitful in a phone call off the rip! Just be careful i don't hear good thing's about them all over now.
Answer: Fake leads, sends email, text & calls between 20-30/day and charges for each. Even if Contractor doesn't open Or answer any calls! Will rip off contractors about $800/day until they catch it and no refunds! Do Not Use HomeAdvisor!
Answer: I don't know about the house cleaners but, I do not trust the company based on my own recent experience.
Answer: You don't know you have to call home advisor and wait on the phone for an hr until they pick up
