Expedia Reviews Summary

Expedia's reputation is significantly marred by widespread customer dissatisfaction, primarily stemming from poor customer service and issues with booking accuracy. Many customers report difficulties in reaching live support, leading to frustrations over incorrect reservations, unexpected charges, and inadequate responses to cancellations. While some users appreciate the variety of options available through the platform, the overall sentiment reflects a lack of trust due to perceived unethical practices and inadequate support during critical situations. This feedback suggests a pressing need for Expedia to enhance its customer service responsiveness and transparency to rebuild consumer confidence.

CAUTION
March 25, 2023

Do be aware. Not all EXPEDIA employees have accurate information including the availability of a hotel room and the deposit for a room (the one said you needed $100 cash!). In addition, they charge over 50% more in additional fees compared to working directly with a hotel. I enourage finding hotels on this site but call the hotel directly and avoid Expedia. You will get a better deal. A Best Western on location would have cost $176 with approx. $17 in fees; Expedia $176 plus $37 in fees, a $20 fee for inaccuarate information!

My flight got cancelled and they couldn't get me a new flight because it had to be with the same airline, and there weren't any available. So I've been trying to get a refund and it's been an excruciating and humiliating experience. I've been living in Taiwan, and initially I tried to call their customer service during US hours because I feel bad for whoever has to be on call in the middle of the night. So I called at midnight here, and one customer service agent left me on hold for an hour at a time multiple times, and eventually left me on for so long that I fell asleep at around 2:30 am. After that I gave up on calling during US hours. I did get an email where they told me to expect an "update"--not a refund, but an update--in 7-10 days. Eighteen days later and I still had heard no updates so I called them again. Apparently the airline offered me a new flight... but it arrives in San Francisco several hours after my connection departs. No one at Expedia bothered to contact me about this. Then I was told they couldn't get me a refund and that I have to call the airline itself. Throughout this the customer service agent lost his temper at me several times. Doubtless it's an awful job, and it was probably an ungodly hour wherever he is, but I would prefer if he didn't take that out on me. Now I have tried to call the airline (EVA) multiple times, but most of the time the call is immediately dropped. Sometimes I get an automated message which says all lines are busy and asks me to call back later. Then the call is dropped. I haven't been able to get through to talk to anyone about my flight. At this point there is a good chance I will miss the wedding of two of my closest friends, in which I am supposed to be one of the bridesfolk. I can't afford a new ticket without the refund. I will never book a flight through Expedia again and I will tell anyone I meet to avoid them at all costs.

No Thanks Expedia!
February 28, 2023

No Thanks Expedia! Rent directly from the car rental company if you want to be treated like a real person and not have your money stolen from you! I was double booked and prepaid for a rental car in January. At the time of pickup I was informed of the double booking, I immediately requested a refund and was told I had to go through Expedia. I called them the same day and explained the situation and was told it would be 3-5 days before I would hear back on the refund. By the time I heard back the trip was over and they denied my refund. So I was charged for a car rental that I wasnt able to use. Second trip I had a family member pass and had to cancel the car rental that was setup and book for an employee, that employee lost his ID and was not able to pick up the car so we had to cancel again and book a new reservation (they would not switch driver to a new person with ID), again I was told 3-5 days to hear back for a refund and again it was denied just after the trip was over. Again I was not able to use a car rental that I paid for. Shady company at best, unwilling to do the right thing. Stay away.

I bought a ticket 2 years ago. I am trying to get my refund for about 2 years. They don't help me. And asking me for proof of it. I sent everything they wanted. But they keep requesting more things.

Duped and overcharged
February 15, 2023

Booked a block of rooms for family coming in for a funeral. Thought we were booking for 139 per room, per night (151 with taxes and fees.) The end result was, we were charged 228 per room. Were told we could cancel the reservation, but we would be charged a 30% cancellation fee. This was Expedia's way to make it right. You can cancel, but we won't give you a full refund. "Prices can change while we are booking your rooms, what you see at the time could go high or lower. This is what the manager expressed when we spoke later about the matter; however, when we were booking the rooms the agent never mentioned the price rate change. We will NEVER do business with Expedia again and will make sure each family member who incurred this extra charge spread the word to their friends and colleagues.

More than one issue.
February 15, 2023

The worst custoner service. I have had 2 incidents with this greedy company. Use any other booking site. Booking.com is much better. They charge extra to change or cancel even if the property doesn't and wont refund a reservation made a month out for the wrong night even when it was their site that reset the dates. Terrible company.

First I went to make a 1 night stay as I was traveling across country. I opened a second window to check another location and when I went to pay for my room it had reset to Christmas eve. This was only day after Thanksgiving. When I got to the property, they didnt have my reservation so I called Expedia. They would not cancel or refund my booking so I had to pay again for a room I thought id already paid.

On a second trip I wanted to extend my trip in Portugal an extra 2 days. I contacted the property a week before the reservation and they said this was fine to contact Expedia I did and they said I would have to make another booking instead of extending. The price I originally paid was 60 euros a night to extend it would be 86 euros a night. If the property agreed to the extension, why are they not compiling with their wishes. Just greedy.

I use Expedia for many of my trips when I travel, especially hotels, and have good experiences. BUT BUYER BEWARD WHEN BOOKING FLIGHTS, SPECIFICALLY TO EUROPE/SPAIN. I thought I was booking a non-stop flight from LA to Spain on Iberia Airlines. The Iberia logo was next to the flight information, Iberian Airlines, Operated by Iberia for Level." After receiving an email (that didn't have Level, the low budget poorly reviewed airline's name in the subject line) about paying for extra items like luggage, seat selection and food and drink, I opened the email and it was "Level Airlines with their blue and green logo." NO WHERE WAS THE LEVEL LOGO NEXT TO THE FLIGHT SELECTION. This is misleading and false advertising! I tried to call to cancel, no one answers the phone at Level and their website doesn't open. Very poor customer service. Expedia told me I had to cancel with Level and couldn't get through. Why not have the Level Logo next to the flight number and details?

Horrible experience
January 25, 2023

Worst customer service ever. I booked trips to Hawaii, Italy, Greece, and Mexico. I paid for direct flights to and from Mexico due to traveling with small children. The direct flight was cancelled and expedia has refused to step up and help with the reimbursement of the difference in flight prices. Very Frustrating and horrible customer service. I will never use them again.

Good experience with them
January 26, 2023

I have more than 10 years using Expedia and I've booked hundreds of hotels and air tickets without having major issues. I was surprised reading so many bad reviews about them. Just 3 days ago I booked 5 rooms for a couple of friends in a Puerto plata hotel in the DR and everything was as it should be.
I'm a gold member because of the activity of my account but the time I've face any issues I've been able to call and get response.
It is true their customer service is bad and they keep you on the phone like forever.
The other thing they are very bad at is just honoring the BPG. I used to get good amount of money from them on BPG as well as 50 dollars in coupons for every booking I made with them if I could find a best price on another platform. They just discontinued this practice.

They also used to grant 100 dollars for certain amount of bookings but all those perks don't exist anymore.

To be honest after reading the bad reviews I doubted about making my last booking but one thing I did was calling the hotel to verify my booking

Unethical price gouging!
January 15, 2023

I booked a room at a local hotel due to an evacuation in our area on Jan 9,2023. When Expedia's sofeware detected the increased demand in hotel rooms, they raised the price shortly after the evacuation order was in effect. The price gouging is unethical and ripping off people who are going through hard times! I asked the hotel manager, he stated that they would never do that, it was the third party -- Expedia -- that did the price gouging!

I made a booking a few days earlier and wanted to change my return flight from lax to Knoxville from 5/7 to 5/8. After Expedia customer service told me that was ok and after I gave her my credit card number, she came back and tried to sell me a flight from Ontario, ca to Knoxville. I asked her to cancel whatever she was doing and not to charge my card. She charged my card and I then received an email my new itenerary, that shows no change to my original itenarary. What a scam.,,,

Terrible service
January 12, 2023

Manager was extremely rude to me when I went inside to ask about my online order. She told me I have to go outside and wait over 30 minutes before my order will be done. I live over 30 minutes away and she told me to leave and come all the way back or cancel my order. I said I can not cancel my order because I used a giftcard and she proceeded to tell me I would lose all of the money on the gift card with no refund.

My flight was canceled because of weather, so the airline issued a refund. The money went to Expedia who has spent the last 3 days bouncing me back to the airline, my bank, to the airline again, refund policy, trying to tell me to contact the airline again (btw, I did and got confirmation of the refund and it was not easy...) and now the person I'm chatting with on Expedia is just not answering anymore... K after 20 minutes he came back and said he is putting it with their "Escalation team in the email" and wait another 72 hours. Its been two weeks, what is another 3 days to get to the next run around.

It is not first time they confuse you on purpose with so called full cancelations.

Had a problem last year(not a first time) because of their scaming tactics of free changes/cancelations.
After a fight they gave me 50$ credit.
I used it on my next reservation. Then I had change of plans and went to cancel this " Free fully refundable" reservation, it told me that my credit that I use was redeemed and i cant use it again.
Bunch of thefts and idiots!

We booked a New Years vacation through VRBO for our family of 5 in Key Largo, FL
The site charged us upfront and we traveled from Michigan via car with our 3 children. This trip was approximately 2000 miles for us. We were informed as we were traveling and 9 hours before check in that the management company Evolve had cancelled our reservation due to a city regulation that requires rentals to be 25 days or more. We had to contact Evolve property management in order to find out what could be done. They offered us a refund and no alternate properties plus $360.00 (20%) that would be sent to us at a later date. Considering that we had a family of 5 and they had taken over $2000.00 from us upfront to pay for the cancelled property this really did not help at all. We then contacted VRBO to see what they could do to accommodate us,last minute and on a holiday weekend. They offered us a selection of hotel properties for the next 2 days until they could find us a similar rental. Now we were crammed into a hotel and we had planned a vacation where everyone had their own sleeping space for 4 days. They said they would contact us VIA email with options. It never happened and we ended up spending a majority of our vacation on the phone to resolve the issue where were hung up on over and over again. We ended up having to book our own last 2 days because they did nothing additional to help us. Now we are waiting on the funds to make it back to our account while we get back to normalcy. I would not recommending you place your family and its vacation at the risk of this company and I would be very cautious if you do. This ended up costing us double an amount of our planned vacation and we never really were able to relax as planned. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else and I hope they are held accountable at some point. Expedia should be ashamed.

December 29, 2022

Stay away from company, expedia will give you a $240 a week car rental and the rental company will not accept US insurance or credit card coverage, they want to charge $50 a day for their insurance! Expedia will not refund citing terms conditions but do not reveal what they want to charge for insurance!

Stay away from Expedia
December 29, 2022

We had a terrible experience with Expedia. When we arrived at the hotel, they didn't have a room for us. I checked and our credit card had been charged. I then called Expedia and talked with an off-shore call center. They were no help. Bottom line, we went to another hotel. When I contested the Expedia charge with my credit card company, Expedia refused to credit me the disputed amount. Never again. Run, don't walk from this site.

Deceit and Deceive
December 27, 2022

I wish I could select a "no star" for this company. They are not even worthy of a single start.

I went on their website to book a room at Hotel Del Coronado, and they have about 15 different room type options on their site. I choose the one with the fire pit so my daughter and family can enjoy smores and an evening around the fire. Once we got to the hotel, we discovered that the room description was for a basic room with no fire pit or terrace. We showed them the photo from the Expedia site showing a firepit and a beautiful terrace for that room type. I called Expedia to let them know I had to pay an extra fee to get that room because they deceived me, and we went prepared to enjoy a fire pit room. Expedia said there was nothing they could do and I should request a refund from the hotel. But the hotel has no power over what they advertise on their website. This is a deceit and deception tactic by this phony company! Their customer service is horrible and not helpful. I will never use this company again!
