The company, City-Data, has garnered mixed reviews, with users appreciating its informative content on various topics, particularly outside of politics. However, a significant concern revolves around the heavily moderated political forums, which many describe as dominated by extreme right-wing views and censorship. Users report frustrations with biased moderation, resulting in the suppression of dissenting opinions and a hostile environment for those with differing political beliefs. Overall, while the platform serves as a useful resource for relocation information, its political discourse is perceived as unwelcoming and unbalanced, leading to a decline in user satisfaction.

What's there to say that hasn't been said a dozen times. This forum is for MAGA crazies. That is all.
Regardless of what forum you go within City-Data, there's tons of biases in posts that mostly have an extreme right wing talking point (all state sections of CD and the other parts as well) I saw posts where people attempt to talk counterarguments of the extreme Right-Wing talking posts get quickly deleted and/or banned. The Politics and Other Controversies section of CD forums is where most of the posts of the forums take place... and there's tons of "wonderful" extreme Right-Wing subject threads like these:
*Yea Baby Floor The Gas Pedal! Oklahoma drivers now have immunity from hitting rioters in streets
*Masks still don't work - new study, major media completely ignores
*72% of black children born out of wedlock
*Rules for white people when visiting the Floyd memorial?
Yup... unless you want to be in this Echo Chamber... I recommend to avoid it like the plague.
City-Data is owned, operated, frequented, and moderated by right-wing extremists and QAnon types, especially in its politics forum. Most members are intent on spreading utterly false and debunked information and conspiracy theories. If you point out the falsity of a posting, you are likely to be "reported" by the disinformer, and the complicit right-wing extremist moderator will summarily ban you for life. City-Data is truly one of the worst and most pathetic sites on the internet.
I spoke out against the EarthQuest billion dollar theme park scam on City-Data. I came to the discussion with piles of mainstream media articles, court records and more about the project and the obvious scammers behind it. Don Allen Holbrook, the brainchild behind the scam that made over 1.2 million dollars, sued newspapers, journalists and all the taxpayers in Texas that dared to speak out against it and little old me, Soapboxmom. Holbrook got his a$$ handed to him in court. The taxpayers in Texas are out 24 million dollars for a theme park that will never get further than a pile of pretty drawings. City-Data is a joke!
Don't dare peeve off the liberal moderators -- they will follow you around violating you every 10 minutes.
Typical liberals drunk with power.
I was member in good standing for over a decade. Then, after the 2020 election, I was "banned for life" for not being a Trump fan.
If you stick to the local forums for info on housing, schools, etc then it's a good site for that kind of info. The statistics offered on locations across America are useful.
However, beware the Politics & Other Controversies forum.
It's a safe haven for the fruit-cakiest, wing-nuttiest conspiracists from the radical right/white supremacy sewer. If you're a normal American, your opinions will not only be unwelcome there, but the so-called "moderators" (ibginnie, Old Hag, et al) are members of the alt-right and will ban you for "trolling" if you dare to post sane, well constructed arguments against the insanity of the lunatic fringe.
My advice would be to stop occasionally to read a bit just to keep yourself informed of what the extremists are up to, but post at your own risk. Because your shelf life will be limited.
It is good forum per its design. Very versatile, millions of members.
Problem with it is somewhere else.
It has very trigger happy moderators that, more than often, consider their personal opinions ultimate measure to which posts to be permitted and which ones closed or deleted.
Also, some moderators, as they do post their opinions in threads, take responses personally and, literally, will stalk respondents and hassle their posts.
Some areas are lacking this, like Automotive. Some, are plane toxic, like Religion and Spirituality, in this respect.
Forum is censored ruthlessly.
Unfortunately, I could not find a better one, as Quora has terrible unfriendly layout. Citi is nice in that aspect.
But, it's either please moderators or, be banned. There is little to none freedom of speech there. And I happen to know, what I am talking about, being super mod at a very large forum myself.
The local forums are okay-ish. It's the politics forum that sucks. It's pretty much an echo chamber for the alt-right trolls, who've deluded themselves into thinking they're the good and peaceful guys. The forum is full of fear-mongering and boogeyman against BLM/Antifa/democrats. Say anything against the hive mind and they'll come down and swarm at you, even if you present them with proof. Currently going through a meltdown cause Trump lost. Avoid this forum, unless you want your brain to rot or have some fun with these weirdos.
I enjoyed using this site to learn about different places to live and hear what people had to say about the communities around my area. Earlier today I meant to respond to a post, but I accidentally made a new Fourm. Keep in mind, I'm new to the site so I didn't know how to work everything perfectly. I logged on about an hour ago and found I had been banned permanently for spam! I also have no way of appealing my ban. All for making an innocent mistake.
So this site is pretty odd to me. It is supposed to be a discussion site on cities/data/urbanism with fair game to have discussion. It is heavily moderated to even the slightest disagreement like we are children in elementary school and cannot have a fair discussion. A lot of bias. And overall it is complete $#*!.
Very poorly moderated; moderators are ignorant of science. It's the only message board I ever posted on that didn't require the person making a claim to prove their claim if asked. Mods think everything is a "discussion" including scientifically validated (or invalidated) information.
Has lofty TOS but mods themselves don't follow them in posting to members, e.g. make personal attacks on members. Also very erratic enforcement and much favoritism.
No one should advertise on this board; do not give them the income.
This message board is weirdly moderated. They have banned me multiple times over the years and I am unsure why because the ban just says I am a troll banned forever, but what exactly did I do wrong? It is a very strangely managed message board that I wanted to participate on but they just ban me and say I am a troll. Why though? Odd forum. I signed up a few times over a few different years from different computers and I read their rules as well. Others here say they only ban Liberals but that is untrue in my case. Therefore I will just stay away from City Data where I must be unwanted forever by a moderator hiding there calling me a troll...
Wow I would have never signed up on this site if I knew that. I am also banned for life and called a troll at 71was shocked never banned from any site. Racism in the political section. If you say that is wrong you to will be called a troll and banned.
I was banned for spam, wearing my shirt, never had this happen before, this is so unamerican, no one in the states should support this site.
I registered an account to post in a thread about an area/neighborhood I've lived since 1985 that has gone down hill lately. They don't want people with a lifetime extensive history of a city participating in a thread apparently - only tourists who don't know much. I was hoping there might be some people to discuss issues and attend city meetings and push the local gov to act. This is not the place for constructive discussion of real issues. Must be heavy handed moderated by people with special interests. Straight up censorship. I would not trust a website managed like that at all.
Wow, what a terrible website. For one, know that it is heavily moderated - and not in a good way. The moderators aren't looking to weed out false, misleading, or offensive posts. They're looking to maintain their personal biases.
The whole original premise of the website, gaining useful information about particular cities/areas, goes out the window, since the city forums are dominated by one or two moderators who post glowing anecdotes about their city, and delete any dissenting posts.
Then there's the politics forum. What a freaking cesspool. You can post any trash you want, as long as you post pro-Trump, or pro-republican stuff. Post anything remotely critical of Trump - you will be banned as a troll. (This had happened to about a dozen accounts I have created in the past few months).
The owner of the site is some sketchy Eastern European character, so no surprise it is so pro-Trump.
POC is a heaven for midlife crisis men who have jumped on the right wing bandwagon who feel they have been sidelined by younger generation. Look at the Jan 6th rioters mostly middle aged obese men who found a new calling in life right wing extreme politics. This is why the are on POC because they are using their home PC mostly CD is not a platform that works well on a tablet, or smartphone. I find mostly they are really cynical when Trump is finely forgotten about they will be left wondering what they have accomplished for the last 5 years. The rest of the forums I find okay but MODS act like little gods recently I was on the cooking subform talking about smoking meats next thing I know my thread is moved to home. My only enjoyment now is trolling the right wing on POC get on there and make fun of their crackpots running for office when they lose. When Biden won in 2020 many of the most loudmouths got so mad they left POC they were not election denires. The ones left behind are mostly election conspiracy deniers now.
The right wingers are the only ones who seem to have free speech. Lean left? The moderators will find a reason to suspend you. Ibginnie is one of the worst moderators. Hates any view other than pro Trump. A real scum bag troll.
If you arrive as a new user and are not a MAGA person they will virtually destroy you. I posted and 5 minutes later a creep that clearly did not read my post attacked me. Many followed and called me troll, it felt like a gang attack just because my ideas are not pro Trump. The moderator (s) are pro-Trump and should be removed immediately since they are bias and not impartial. My post only lasted 10 hours, as it was deleted because it did not align with the far right. If the poster abandons the thread, it may last a little longer but if you defend your idea, it will be gone very quickly. This site clearly violates the freedom of speech and the proper authorities should get involved and shut it down.
I joined City Data in 2014, and I posted in many different City Data sub-forums. Once I wondered over to the Politics and Other Controversies sub-forum, I quickly realized it's a haven for alt-right, extreme, neo-Nazi people.
Now, I don't ever shy away from good political debates. In fact, I enjoy them very much! However, the City Data moderators make it impossible to have polite discourse because they actively encourage and provide cover for the racist posters, while temporarily—then permanently—banning left-leaning posters. This happens repeatedly. I've seen it over the years. (Yes, I stayed fighting the good fight for way too long... until my own permanent ban, which was a blessing in disguise.)
I discourage everyone from providing this website any traffic, as it's not a good place for anyone without white nationalist views. Stay away! City Data has an absolutely terrible reputation that's completely warranted... and it's only getting worse.
Answer: Ibginnie is by far the worst moderator. Anyone here stating that she is a right-winger is full of it. She meads out her personal justice on a whim. If she doesn't like your post/thread she will make up a reason to can it.
Answer: There is nothing Liberal about City Data don't believe that lie above. That is a right wing white nationalist run site. LOL@ Liberal.
Answer:
Answer: I'll give CD this much - you can find reasonably good information there concerning states and (as the name implies) major US cities. Unfortunately, many CD forums are run by mods who want to be kings or queens of their own little kingdoms to the point that they turn into the very bullies and trolls that they are supposed to be moderating their forums against. There are a few forums there that are actually not bad - the retirement forum, the automobile forum, and a couple of the state forums like the Colorado forum (stay away from the New Mexico forum!). The POC forum drags the entire place down thanks to Ibginnie's erratic and heavily partisan moderation style. I have had my posts deleted because I used ONE foreign word in my post (TOS say you must use English only), or because I used the word "troll" just in passing. Ibginnie couldn't care less if alt-right posters call people libertards or baby killers or commies, etc., etc. Recently, she allowed a thread about Hunter Biden supposedly being a porn addict who preyed on his own cousins, and the thread went downhill from there. And of course, QAnon conspiracy theories have the run of the board. One of the other mods who I am friendly with told me that he hates the way Ibginnie operates and he can't understand why she is allowed to remain. I am seriously thinking of sending a link to sitejabber to the owner of the board, so that he can see for himself how destructive certain mods are to City Data's reputation (such as it is). So, yeah. There's some wheat with the chaff, but the chaff can be overwhelming. Caveat emptor!
Answer: Ugh. City-Data used to be great, but I think those Mods you mentioned have run off everyone else. There used to be a lot more mods, but I have noticed that it's the same awful mods moderating more and more of the site. Poncho is modding my city's forum, for example, which is for an Ohio city. What does a guy in NM know about Ohio?
Answer: It's not an assumption. It's the stark reality of the POC forum at that site.
Answer: They've been around for a long time, perhaps at some point it was a reputable site. That is no longer the case. I suspect traffic to the site is dwindling.
