Care.com does not do all that it should in terms of background checks. Several months into having hired a house and pet sitter, we discovered that she had a juvenile record, which she had never been questioned about by this company. By this time, we had hired her to petsit our dog, whom she killed due to neglect, lack of feeding and watering and over stressing him with a hike in 100 weather. I do not recommend this company and feel their hiring practices are entirely self serving and deplorable to the customers they claim to serve. I will never use nor recommend this company to anyone. As far as I'm concerned they are just as responsible for death of our dog as the person they claimed to have thoroughly checked out and hired.
It seems my experience with Care.com was not unique. This company is a scam. They have an underhanded billing policy which tricks customers into auto-renewal without our knowledge. The Customer Service team will not respond proactively to legitimate complaints about inappropriate and illegal charges.
One scenario to defraud customers is thus: You will receive an email by default to your email box when a potential client responds to your posting. You may reply to emails from your own email box to the potential client without going to the site. After my one month premium subscription ended, I stopped using the site, thinking my month was up and that was it. Little did I know, auto-renewal kicked in. I was NOT NOTIFIED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW MONTH OF THIS RENEWAL by Care.com in any way. When a nanny emailed me after the month asking if the position was still open, naturally I responded from my own email box. According to Care.com, this constituted use of their Premium features even though I did not use their site or knowingly use this Premium feature. This tactic was used to defraud me and others.
When I brought all of this to the attention of JoAnne at customer service at Care.com, she sent me back a fake Subscription agreement, which was purported to be mine, in which it was written that "All Subscriptions are automatically renewed unless cancelled". This was either a forged or outdated document since it said the charge was for $35. In fact, my subscription was for $39.
Care.com's billing process is set up to scam and defraud customers. I intend to bring this to the attention of the relevant authorities and I would hope others like me, who have been cheated out of their hard-earned money, will do the same.
Hi Boo P., All of our policies are clearly stated in our Terms of Use. Our Auto Renewal policy is also stated on the upgrade page right underneath the three subscription options, and at the bottom of the page just above the submit button. By sending any messages or accessing any members contact information through the site, you were utilizing the Premium Features of the site. We apologize if you were unclear on our policies, and do wish you the best in your search for a care giver.
DO NOT USE THIS SITE! They only rip you off and won't refund your money! I wish I had read these reviews before subscribing. They will not advertise that they will continue charging you. So, here I am, thinking I'm paying for 1 month and I see another charge before that month is even up. SERIOUSLY, I will report them to ripoff report so more people are aware of these scam artists. Why not put it in plain words right on the page with the credit card that you WILL CONTINUE CHARGING. Oh I know why, because it's a part of your scam.
Hi Lekesha, We were able to locate your account, as well as refund the renewal charge and cancel the subscription immediately for you. We have sent you a private message with more information. We apologize for any confusions regarding our billing policies, and wish you all the best!
Care.com takes advantage of busy parents that think they are just paying $35 for one month of service by continuing to charge them even if they are no longer using the service. Do not give them your credit card number! They will not refund you. They will hide behind the same statement that you should have known they would continue to charge you based on the fine print. This is a very unethical company that only cares about making money. They do not care about their customers. Hopefully more people will realize this is a scam. What a perfect setup... overcharge customers and then state that the customer is at fault for misunderstanding or forgetting to cancel.
Hi Heather, As stated in our Terms of Use as well as twice on the upgrade page, all of our subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled. We have a strict refund policy here, and per policy will refund the most recent charge on an account if it is within 30 days, and if there has been no activity on the account.
As soon as you upgrade the account you can select the downgrade option in your Account & Settings page. This will give you the full Premium access for the amount of time you paid for, and will then cancel rather than renew the subscription at the end of that time.
We apologize if the policy was misunderstood, and do hope you were able to find the care that you were looking for. Best wishes!
I'm giving this site 3 stars because I was very happy with my search for a caregiver - it took less than a month. But beware - even though I downgraded to a free membership before I was charged for the next month, I was still charged. I didn't receive my credit card statement until the beginning of the next month to notice the charge and when I asked for a refund I was told no because it was over 30 days. I appreciate the policy, but they did not have authorization to charge my card. They claim they have no record of my downgrading, and unfortunately even though I remember getting the confirmation screen stating I now had a "basic" membership, I have no proof so they are refusing the refund. I noticed in another response they say you should receive an email when you downgrade, but I did not receive this even after they did downgrade my account (and it wasn't in my spam either - trust me - I was looking). They admit I did not use my account during that time, yet the $39 is apparently worth turning a happy customer into a very upset one. Just be sure you get some kind of confirmation when you downgrade so you can dispute charges.
Hi Amy, We are very happy to hear that you were able to quickly find a caregiver through our service! We're sorry, however, if our billing policies were misunderstood at all. All of our subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled or downgraded. When you do downgrade the account you will automatically get a message to your Care.com inbox. If, after downgrading, you don't receive this message, you can always call or email our member care team to make sure that it worked and that you won't be automatically renewed. We are, again, very sorry for your experience, but are happy to hear that you were able to find the care you were looking for!
Same miserable issue -- fine print says they can bill you indefinitely for you "1 Month Membership"
I used the site to find a tutor for my son and thought I had to pay for only that month.
Without a warning or a email they charged me continuously for the next 9 months.
They send emails about all the crap promotions etc but no email about my credit card being charged. This site is making money of people who don't use their service and but have signed up without reading about their stupid auto renewal policy. It is a scam!
Not sure if there any law where we can prevent users from being take advantage off. I heard the lady who started this site wanted to help people! Clearly not if she is taking money for service people have never used! I will never use this site.
Hi Karina, We do state on our upgrade page that all subscriptions are automatically renewed until cancelled. This is also in our Terms of Use that you agreed to upon enrollment. Please refer to our Terms of Use to review these policies. As soon as you upgrade your account, you can cancel the subscription at any point before the renewal date to not be auto renewed in your Account & Settings page, or by contacting our Member Care department. We apologize for your experience, and do hope you were able to find the care you were looking for.
Any company that has auto renewal policies is horrible in my book. Why do they even bother having different 1 month, 4 month, 1 year membership subscriptions. Every membership with them is infinite b/c they continue to charge your credit card even if you haven't used the website in months. No- I did not read the fine print- I had a 6 week old baby when I signed up with them. Why do they present it as a 1 month subscription period when that is not the case at all? And the fact that they respond to everyone saying that the auto renewal feature is a benefit to their customers is an absolute joke. At least the company should admit that it's a money-making practice for them.
Hi Lauren, We offer different subscription options because all of our members have different care needs! All of our subscriptions are set to automatically renew because we wouldn't want to interrupt any communications between members when a billing cycle runs out. You can set the subscription to cancel at any point after upgrading in your Account & Settings page, or by contacting our Member Care Team.
Beware of false charges, poor record keeping and horrible customer service. We used care.com to find a babysitter and they continued to charge my credit card after I deactivated my account on their website (twice!). After spending 30 min on the customers service call center, they could not figure out why they were charging me and claimed they could not find the record even though I had my credit card bill right in front of me, They told me to call my credit card company and report a fraud charge. That only helped with one month, then they continued to bill me without authorization for 4 more months. Another 45 min with customer service call center they could not stop the false billing. They proceeded not to offer me any credits, no apology or recourse. I have had to tell my credit card company to take legal action. What a waste of time! How embarrassing for this company. Don't trust this company - and watch all the charges if you dare use them
Hi Yee, Whenever you deactivate, downgrade, or close an account, you will receive a message to your Care.com inbox as well as a message to your personal email. If you can find either of these and forward them to our team, we would be happy to look in to it and see if there is anything further we would be able to do on the account!
If there are charges you are unaware of, you can always contact us with the billing information and we can find out where the charges are coming from. Although our Call Center is open 10am-6pm EST, Monday-Friday, we have a very skilled email team that will respond to any inquiry and be able to help you out within 24 hours.
Any time you upgrade the account, there is a setting in your Account & Settings page to set it to Downgrade that you can select. You may need to answer a couple of questions, but once the downgrade process is complete the account will cancel at the end of the billing cycle instead of renew.
We again apologize for your experience, and wish you and your family all the best!
UPDATE:
Kristen,
Your apology means NOTHING to me.!.!.!. Actions speak MYCH louder than words and your words are WORTHLESS, just as your actions are.!.!.!.
You should take a hard look at all the posts and how many times you start out saying "I'm Sorry".!.!.!.
WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! Don't waste your money or time!
I'm active duty military and I tried to downgrade my membership while out of the country and thought I had. I was charged an annual renewal fee of $140 on 10/24 and requested a refund and to cancel my service on 11/27 and they denied my request and I was told its because they have a no refund policy if not requested within 30 days of the charge. Just goes to show that care.com obviously doesn't support the military community!
Hi Lisa, We offer lots of benefits to military families, including special promotional codes and discounted subscriptions. Our auto renewal policy is stated on the upgrade page when you had initially signed up. It is also stated, as well as our refund policy, in our Terms of Use. We are very sorry if this wasn't clearly communicated to you during your enrollment process. We apologize for the experience that you had, and do wish you and your family all the best.
I signed up for a "free" membership - all it allows you to do is post a job. If you want to reply to anyone who applies, you have to pay a membership fee? As if. I'll use Kijiji thanks. Useless.
Hi Kara!
We're happy to hear that you signed up for the basic membership. The basic membership is a great way to see how many caregivers there are in your area, and to see how many of them would be interested in your job.
We then offer our premium membership which gives you the ability to contact anyone through the site, view and contact information, gives you access to preliminary background checks for free, the ability to purchase more comprehensive background checks, and access to written and recorded references. All of these subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled. You can set the subscription to cancel at any point after upgrading by selecting the "Downgrade" option in your Account & Settings page.
We apologize if this was never communicated to you, but hope that you are able to find the care you are looking for!

Care.com was not helpful at all. I signed up for a 3 month subscription that tuned into a 9 month subscription. I did NOT find the care I was looking for and was still charged $140. I was more than willing to pay the inital $70 for the irst 3 months when I attempted to use this unhelpful site. When I called customer service they even stated they could see that there was no activity on my account over the previous 6 months but would not refund all my money. This site is a SCAM. It was extremely difficult to find the phone number on the website to call and cancel. Even after reaching a representative and requesting a manager I was only e-mailed back. Through email with the supervisor I also requested a phone call and was never called! HORRIBLE customer service. They set you up for automatic renewal and won't refund all your money even if they show NO ACTIVITY on your account.
Hi Rebecca,
We're very sorry to hear about your experience with Care.com. As clearly stated on our upgrade page, and in our Terms of Use that you agree to upon enrollment, all of our subscriptions automatically renew until you set them to cancel. This is a setting that you can change through your Account & Settings page, or by calling or emailing us, at any point between your initial upgrade and your renewal date.
We again apologize for your experience, and hope you were able to find the care you were looking for.

What appears to be a welcoming and easy website to set up a personal account, ends up being difficult or impossible to make changes on. It takes some time to go through all the steps and put together a well written bio. After all was finished, I realized my headline was not good and was somewhat misleading with the type of work that I really wanted to pursue. I couldn't change my nanny headline to part time childcare (and they can't help you to do it either). That is a big disservice when that's the first thing a family will see and then skim on over to the next profile. I deleted the entire account thinking I would start over but there is no way to apply the background check I already pd for to a new profile. I now have to re enter everything new again and pay for another background check. The phone rep went through her canned speech about how the system is set up that way and there is nothing they can do. Not pleased with this company and I will not pay again for a background check that is so easily thrown out. I will be going to Rover.com to look for someone to care for my dog.
Hi Kat,
We're very sorry about your experience with Care.com. We do our best to make the site user friendly, and are very sorry that this wasn't your experience. We welcome all feedback about your experience with the site and will pass it all on to the correct teams here.
To clarify, when you had first enrolled you were prompted to choose either babysitter or nanny. Once you chose one of those two, you would no longer be able to change that sub-category. However, you would still show up in any search results for child care providers, and can still apply to any childcare jobs on the site, whether they are for a full time or a part time caregiver.
We again apologize for your experience, and will pass along your feedback about the site.

I was ripped off by a client of care.com. When I complained to care.com that their client had ripped me off of a shift's worth of work and cc'd the client, the client lied and put a bad review on my profile. When I complained to the client and care.com that I had been ripped off and lied about, care.com cancelled my account. I had written a very nice rebuttal to the lying, stealing client's bad review, but care.com refused to post it, and sided with their crooked customer. Probably because the crooked customer client was a paying member and I am not. I am booked out all the time through care.com's competitor. Precisely zero of my other clients came from care.com - so I guess it's no loss, but what a horrible experience. Theft of services. Defamation of character. And no recourse. I think the company should be called: don'tcare.com. Booo! Stay away. They are bad.
Hi Molly,
We're very sorry to hear about your experience with Care.com.
The decision to close an account on Care.com is not taken lightly. Care.com takes the safety and security of our site and our member community very seriously and, based on the Terms of Use that each member agrees to, reserves the right to remove access to the site for any reason or no reason, with or without notice. You are welcome to contact our Member Care team at any time to discuss your removal from the site.

This service has gone from a good partner to a deceitful money making bureaucracy. They have instituted auto renewal on your credit card payments without any warning or change management communication to participants. Their communications are canned and the network has declined considerably. When i first used them a few years ago, I had a lot of good options, this time, i received nothing. Be careful, they will take your money.
Hi T. K.,
We're sorry to hear about your experience with Care.com. All of our subscriptions are set to automatically renew, as stated clearly on the upgrade page as well as in the terms of use that you agree to upon enrollment. It is ultimately up to the member to cancel the subscription when he or she is done using it. This is an option in the Account and Settings page that you will have as soon as you finish the upgrade process.
Additionally, we are sorry that you were unable to find a caregiver this time around. We recommend posting a job as well as searching for and messaging caregivers that you think will be a good fit to get the maximum results through the service.
We again apologize for your experience, and hope you were able to find a caregiver who met your needs!

Care.com Member Care Representative
Very misleading subscription service. Offers 1,3, or 6 month subscription, then keeps re-billing your credit card. I used it one time, but they re-billed me 5 months ini a row. They said their disclaimer about re-billing was clear, and refused to refund, even though I never used their service thereafter. This is dishonest. If you want to risk your care with such a dishonest company, be fore-warned.
Hi Robin,
We're sorry to hear you misunderstood our subscription and billing policies. As clearly stated on the upgrade page, as well as in the terms of use that you agree to upon enrollment and in a confirmation message, all of our subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled. This is a setting that you can change at any point after upgrading on your Account & Settings page, or you can email or call us any time before the renewal date.
We apologize for your experience, and hope you were able to find the care that you were looking for!

This service deserves negative stars. BEWARE! Unless you like paying someone for nothing, which is exactly what I got. Do not fall for the free trial offer. Nothing is free with this scam of a company. I signed up for the "free" trial and discovered 11 months later that I had been charged $35 a month for an automatic monthly renewal for what they call Premium Service. For that amount, I got one pet caregiver for one visit who stole my pain medication. Almost $400 later, my husband mentions a $35 charge that had been showing up in our bank statement that he had thought was related to MY medical care. Don't even bother to try to read their fine print--just RUN and find a service with more transparent and honest dealings.
Hi Susan,
We're very sorry to hear about your experience with Care.com.
When looking for a caregiver, you can join Care.com for free to browse caregivers, post a job, and receive applicants to your job posting. You can use the free services for as long as you want. It's a great way to test the service out before paying for it, and to get a feel for what kind of caregivers there are in your area!
When you decide to upgrade, as clearly stated on the upgrade page and in our Terms of Use, all of our subscriptions are automatically renewing. This is a feature that many members like because they can always have access to a community of caregivers. Additionally, we would not want to end communications between members prematurely.
Lastly, we are very sorry to hear about your experience with the care provider you had hired. We offer background checks and screening tools to help make the most informed hiring decision. This is definitely someone we would want to hear about directly, and hope you were able to report her to our safety team. You can do this directly through your account, or by emailing or calling us.
Again, our apologies, and we hope this helps clarify any confusion regarding our billing.
Regards,
Care.com Member Care Representative
Be very careful on this site. They may advertise a one time fee, but they will continue to bill you $40 per month forever until you actually find their phone number (not on site - *******115), call them and cancel. It feels exceptionally dishonest
Hi Jodi,
We're sorry if you misunderstood our subscription service. All of our subscriptions are set to automatically renew until the member sets them to downgrade or cancel. This is an option you can manage on your own through your Account & Settings page, or by emailing or calling us.
We hope this helps clarify our billing policy, as well as the downgrading or cancelling process!

This website is a scam. They auto renew your membership and there customer service department has been advised to "never refund any money for any reason" even if they are at fault. I originally signed up for one month because I saw several in home daycare providers in my town listed and I had to purchase a one month membership in order to contact them. Once I signed up, I saw that there daycare providers did not exist! They put up fake providers to lure you to sign up. Once I realized this was a sham, I decided to not renew my membership and did not visit the site after the first month. I recently checked my credit card statement and realized that I was being charged every month - I immediately called Care.com only to be told that they never refund money to anyone. This is the response I received...
Per your request I have reviewed your case. Unfortunately, at this point we will not be able to offer you any further refunds. As the representative you spoke with explained, it clearly states on our enrollment page that we are a subscription service and that all of our subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled. I have attached a copy of this page for you to review again. Ultimately it is the member's responsibility to either downgrade the account or contact us when through using the service.
I apologize if you misunderstood our subscription service or forgot to cancel. However, if you refer to Section 8.3 of our Terms of Use you will see that all payments for services are non-refundable and there are no refunds or credits for unused services.
If you have any further questions please refer to our Terms of Use for more information.
Best Regards,
Cara
Care.com Member Care Supervisor
It did NOT clearly state that my one month membership would be auto renewed. That is a lie on there part and they are clearly hurting for money and just trying to take advantage of people. I have filed complaints with BBB and contacted care.com several times. I only accessed the site two times and realized that they falsely advertised sitters in my area to get me to sign up. Then, I was charged 37 dollars a month for NOT VISITING THE SITE, these charges were NOT AUTHORIZED BY ME and they are not willing to refund. Stay away from this site at all costs - use sittercity.com
Hi Megan,
We're sorry to hear about your experience with Care.com, but would like to clarify a couple of things.
Firstly, as clearly stated on our upgrade page and in our terms of use, all of our subscriptions automatically renew until the member sets them to cancel. Care.com has a strict refund policy, also stated in our terms of use. Please refer to sections 8.2 and 8.3 for these policies.
Secondly, Care.com would never put up fake providers to lure anyone in to using the service. You can sign up for free to see the care providers in your area so that you can decide if there are going to be people you will want to contact before upgrading. Any in home daycare providers that you had seen would still be listed after upgrading, and you can search specifically for these providers by doing a search for "Family Child Care" care givers.
We again apologize for your experience.

Care.com Member Care Representative
They're one of those shady websites that keeps charging you every month even if you just sign up for a "one month membership" so beware
Hi Jess,
We're sorry if you misunderstood our subscription plans. As stated on the upgrade page when you sign up for a subscription, as well as in Section 8.2 of our Terms of Use, all of our subscriptions are set to automatically renew until the member sets them to cancel or downgrade. Many of our members find this feature useful as they like the insurance of having a community of caregivers available whenever they need care. Additionally, we would not want to interrupt communications between members in the middle of the search process!
As soon as you upgrade your membership, you can immediately set the account to downgrade, which effectively cancels the auto renewal. This is an option in the "Membership Information" section on your "My Profile and Settings" page on your profile. When you select to Downgrade the account, you will continue to have the premium access for the remainder of your subscription, whether it is the 1 month, 3 month, or 1 year option, and then will automatically go back to the free, basic level, and will not be charged again.
I hope this helps clear up any confusion regarding our billing policy!

Answer: Hello, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and they are currently investigating Care.com. This is important enough to me that they have scammed me out of 6 months of payments and I had to close my credit card for Fraud. If you have had a bad experience with Care.com, I would encourage you to file a complaint with BBB. If enough people complain, then they will take more serious action. Here is the website. It is a short process to submit a complaint. https://www.bbb.org/consumer-complaints/file-a-complaint/get-started
Answer: Steer clear from Care.com or what we prefer to call Care-aless. Com! They are only about profit for them. The site is for trollers that prey on innocent families. You'd be better off putting an ad in your local newspaper. Most local newspapers also have online readership too!
Answer: I am determined to shut this site down. I am contacting news programs, The Today Show, Good Morning America and any and all others. Shut them down!
Answer: This is so sad! I have been on both sides as I have an assisted living home in Pensacola Florida. I used care.com to staff my home; awful. Then when I had myself on as a provider they suspended me for a 14 year old non viloent misdemeanor, and they did not even have my permission to check past 7. They want you to get crappy providers, the good ones are kicked off because once ya get a good one, you no longer need them. Cash cow corrupt company who makes rules up as they go along, I heard 20/20 is doing a special. I plan to contact them, as I am verifiably the best care coordinator hands down, extremely good with direct care. You will only ever be returned 1 month contact the Federal Trade Commission file a complaint that's what I did, the more problems the better the case against care, com
Answer: I would be cautious. I hope she is not moving for the job, as that is NOT a good idea. I get text messages daily from people asking me to email them (often for a friend), or someone coming from out of town or whatever. I delete these right away. First of all, they should go through the regular website and email you. No one would hire anyone without first meeting them, checking references, etc. I am sitting at the home of someone I took with through the Care site. I first communicated via email, then set up a face to face and met the kids. If it seems too good to be true, it is. USE COMMON SENSE! Seriously, if you don't have common sense you really shouldn't be taking care of kids, pets or anyone else!
Answer: Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe they have a big money backer and can screw people of their money and lack of customer service? They should be called, I don't care.com
Answer: If I were you I'd choose another site. Care.com is terrible.
Answer: Some of the clients are looking for cheap labor through the internet for housekeeping. I usually tell the person to call me back for interview finish. Then I would tell them that I am self-employed and they would need to file a 1099 for taxes to IRS.
Answer: Care.com is set up for parents that pay for the service... Parents can enroll for free and place and add. However, If they do not forward their credit card any messages from caregivers will have a blocked phone number. The babysitter cam also enroll for free and make a profile for her services. However if she does nor forward her credit card she can only apply to 8 jobs every 28 days and only the ads from parents that have paid for an account will be able to contact her. DO NOT respond to anyone contacting you on your phone that did not contact through Care.com first... This is always a scam... The message will look like this: I am moving to your area soon and need car for my son/daughter. Kindly respond to my email.(They are looking to scam you for money.)
Answer: Sitter city.com could help you. I have honestly had nothing but problems with care.com. They make up rules as they decide not how things are written and do not follow their own privacy policy. They feed on single moms and dads. As well as children providing for aging parents You can place an add on Craigslist as well, for free and your prospective employee provides their own background check as it can be a most recent one and obtained by themselves at 5 to 10 dollars

Hi Claire, We're horribly sorry about your experience with a caregiver you found through our site. I hope you were able to contact us and report the incident to our safety team so that we could look in to it. Care.com is not an agency so we do not hire the caregivers on our site, they are all individuals who have also created accounts on the site. We again apologize about this experience, and should you wish to discuss the situation with us, we do encourage you to contact our team.
