The people that formed this company originally sold it... the company that runs it now evidently bought it as a "cash cow" and are not in the business of making it work other than to make money. I have heard a couple of good reports about working with them... and hundreds of bad reports. The experience cost me about $20 for the background check... but I learned a lesson... when something seems too good to be true... it usually is
I have not been charged by care. However, my concern is the refund process. Here is a suggestion to those wanting a credit. Do not make payments, if possible directly from checking accounts. If you use a charge card and you have good credit with your bank you can dispute the charge, fill out a form and get a credit until the vendor has satisfied you and the bank.
Like many I saw online, I was a one time customer. Then I was charged a monthly fee for two years. It seems like they are counting on people who check their credit card charge infrequently to reap dishonest profit. This dishonest business practice of default charging of the fee until it is stopped actively gives it a bad name. Shame on Care.Com which should be called thieves.com.
I recently signed up as a free member thinking that I had stumbled across a classified site, where workers paid to run an add for their services, etc. I also saw that background checks were available for potential workers and was pleased to learn this. Since then I've asked for house keeping help and have had MANY responses to my add, but only two messages allowed me to reply. Although the other responders listed their phone numbers although they were "x"ed out and I wasn't allowed to reply unless I signed up for one of the premium memberships. After reading multiple comments about thinking you've only signed up for a month then getting additional monthly charges, I'm reluctant to use this site.
Not pleased at all with care.com. Now, I am absolutely aware that there are many satisfied clients, but I am not one of them. I signed up for service in October 2013, hoping to find an ongoing sitter for my children. Instead, I was bombarded with requests from many interested people, yet the screening process was hardly adequate and the site very difficult to navigate. I never found anyone for a number of reasons. Within a few weeks of starting my 1 year PAID membership, I opted to downgrade my service aware that my service would at least remain active since until the end of the subscription period, but was surprised when I was charged this past October for a renewal I thought I had ended. Needless to say, I contacted them, after only seeing the statement this month, and they tell me I can't get a refund because:
Your account has not been used since the most recent renewal charge, AND
Your request for a refund is made within thirty (30) days of the most recent charge.
My account had not been used in 11 months and I didn't request the refund because I didn't see the charge until my statement arrived AFTER 30 days. Care.com uses poor practice, attempting to steal from patrons and have a sure fire policy to secure their profits aware that most charges won't appear on most credit card statements.
If you are interested in a service to help you find the right care for your loved ones, start with a company who's goal is to care for you (their patron).
Is anyone going to start a class action lawsuit? I too signed up for the 1 month subscription and only used it during that time and now they claim - when I have asked for a credit for the subsequent months that they have no obligation to do that. This smacks of the aol subscription issues years back.
I would most definitely NOT recommend Care.com. I purposely signed up for 1 month only. It *******@39.00 plus tax i guess because the total came to 42. And change. One day, after the month was up, i was checking my bank balance and w/drawals only to discover an automatic pmt. Of 42. And change. Since i did not recognize the source of pmt., i called my bank to inquire@ the reason for this w/drawal.Lo and behold, i was told it was to Care.com. I did not authorize this pmt. And altho i've emailed them@ this they are ignoring me and giving me the runaround. My bank will block future pmts. To them and place the current one in "dispute". Since i can't drive due to MS, my aide or friend will now have to take me, scooter and all, to bank to sign necessary papers to accomplish the prevention of Care.com robbing my bank acct. I have since read many other accts. Of similar or worse practices. I AM REPORTING THEM. BEWARE THE GRINCH!
Where do I begin? Care.com is full of scammers sending email or texts... even placing calls to nannies seeking jobs. This is becoming so often, that I can honestly tell you that at least half of the people that have contacted me are scammers. If Care.com is taking my money in good faith, I expect them to confirm the identity of the people contacting us nannies. How can Care.com not protect us? We are paying a monthly fee to be able to access the job database and we are not even getting out monies worth.
Their billing practices are dishonest. They don't make you click a separate box saying you've read and understand the automatic billing for a monthly membership! I clicked the one bubble to pay the much higher amount for one month only! And then after a horrible experience with the pet sitter I chose (700$ water bill cuz she left sprinklers on and flooded neighbors yard and 356$ electric bill cuz she didn't understand the AC plus locking dog in off limits guest room and him peeing on a new 450$ rug and the bed), I get billed another 39$ for a second month that I didn't want! So is it worth getting that extra 39$ out of people to have them then cancel and ticked off that they were scammed. Evident by all their caveats when you click on frequently asked questions telling you their billing practices aren't criminal! They are. And I'm sure it's only a matter of time before there's a class action law suit! I would not do business with a shady company like this.
This company's choice to put an automatic renewal in the fine print when you ask for ONE MONTH of service has earned it 1 star from me.
My other child's school gives me a courtesy email every month reminding me that tuition is coming out of my account. My cat's vet bill is automatic too because I ASKED for automated monthly service... and they remind me every month that there will be a withdrawal.
I believe it is part of Care.com's business plan to make money from continuing plans without any contact after that initial request for 1month of service. Will never use this company again.
Reading these reviews are quite concerning. I am a college educated, professional & retired registered nurse with extensive private home care experience. I applied for several home caregiver positions and did not receive any viable responses. I paid for a background check as recommended. The only potential client told me that a paid member agency contacted them and strongly discourage against hiring independent caregivers.
I signed up for a membership earlier this year when my husband and I needed a sitter during a vacation. I canceled the membership within a month since I didn't need it anymore. Recently I went on this site to browse sitters in my area. A couple days later, I found a $39.99 charge on my card that was not authorized. I couldn't find any contact information on their site so I actually had to Google it and eventually found an email form where I told them about the charge and requested a refund. I was denied because they said I already had visibility to caregivers' contact information. When asked why my card was charged without any type of authorization, I was told I had manually authorized it when I clicked on "upgrade membership". I never saw a page like that! I then requested that my credit card be deleted from the account and was told that the only way that can happen is if I delete my account. Will do! These people are scammers.
Care.com is not reputable! I never received any work or leads for any care giving and cleaning jobs, even though I am highly qualified with certifications. THE ONLY EMPLOYER WHO CONTACTED ME scammed free services and was highly abusive. The employer told me she uses Care.com to find new people. Care.com does not take any responsibility for their poor business practice either. They continue to refuse taking responsibility for what their site is responsible for. Care.com owes me a large paycheck AND ANY INTELLIGENT LAWYER OUT THERE NEEDS TO SUE THIS COMPANY SOON! They are a terrible business that does not provide legitimate work or help society in any way. They waste people's time and con artists use their site to hurt good people.
If you want to help others with care do not set up your profile on this site. You will end up applying for job after job after job, and will have no one respond. The only response you might get is someone trying to scam you. Also you pay for background check to help your profile. Charged every three months. Eighty dollars is enough for me to waste on this site.
Care.com is a scam. I got one job offer from a person named Nancy claiming to be deaf and to have a six year old son named Jason. Told me she wanted me some bills for her and her mom. I was sent a check for $2,775 by her so called pay roll manager. I was suspicious and had the bank verify the company who sent it and the check. It was a fake. Please be very careful. Always verify everything.
I have been a non paying member of Care.com for three years. I have had four legitimate requests that lead and continue to lead to good working relationships.
Recently, I have been texted by scammers but I believe the hacked into Care.com's site to obtain my phone number.
I actually have gotten 3 jobs on care.com but every time I got a message with someones number who wanted my service they made sure to block the number so I couldn't read it. They would tell me I had to upgrade my account to read my messages. They also canceled my account 3 times without my knowledge. And when I emailed them about it they said i cancelled it myself because I had gotten a job and went off to school. Which were lies! It was also VERY weird that they gave specific reasons why "I cancelled " my account! Very sketchy people and the staff are horrible!
I was charged $240 for preferred background check subscription. I can't find anywhere on their website that it lists they charges for the unlimited checks, only the individual ones. I am hoping to hear back from someone about this.
No where in the sign up process does it say that it is a monthly recurring subscription. It clearly states post your job, search applicants and pick the right applicant for a $39 fee. All of a sudden you check your account and they have taken out another $39 fee. I never save my credit card number on any site and yet care.com saved it and renewed without notice. We also cancelled our job post yet they still charged us a second monthly fee. Total bull$#*!.
The Care.com website has very poor functionality compared with SitterCity.com, the caliber of the job applicants is much lower, and I couldn't find anyone willing to take an after-school sitter job who didn't want to be paid under the table. Don't waste your time attempting to hire a sitter on Care.com.
Hi Maryellen, I apologize that you did not receive the care you expected. Although many caregivers will prefer certain forms of payment depending on the situation and job, one of the great things about Care.com is the ability to negotiate and come to an agreement on which form of payment will work best for both parties. Moreover, feel free to send me some things about the site you did not find as useful and I will be happy to forward them over. I hope you eventually find someone!
Answer: Hello, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and they are currently investigating Care.com. This is important enough to me that they have scammed me out of 6 months of payments and I had to close my credit card for Fraud. If you have had a bad experience with Care.com, I would encourage you to file a complaint with BBB. If enough people complain, then they will take more serious action. Here is the website. It is a short process to submit a complaint. https://www.bbb.org/consumer-complaints/file-a-complaint/get-started
Answer: Steer clear from Care.com or what we prefer to call Care-aless. Com! They are only about profit for them. The site is for trollers that prey on innocent families. You'd be better off putting an ad in your local newspaper. Most local newspapers also have online readership too!
Answer: I am determined to shut this site down. I am contacting news programs, The Today Show, Good Morning America and any and all others. Shut them down!
Answer: This is so sad! I have been on both sides as I have an assisted living home in Pensacola Florida. I used care.com to staff my home; awful. Then when I had myself on as a provider they suspended me for a 14 year old non viloent misdemeanor, and they did not even have my permission to check past 7. They want you to get crappy providers, the good ones are kicked off because once ya get a good one, you no longer need them. Cash cow corrupt company who makes rules up as they go along, I heard 20/20 is doing a special. I plan to contact them, as I am verifiably the best care coordinator hands down, extremely good with direct care. You will only ever be returned 1 month contact the Federal Trade Commission file a complaint that's what I did, the more problems the better the case against care, com
Answer: I would be cautious. I hope she is not moving for the job, as that is NOT a good idea. I get text messages daily from people asking me to email them (often for a friend), or someone coming from out of town or whatever. I delete these right away. First of all, they should go through the regular website and email you. No one would hire anyone without first meeting them, checking references, etc. I am sitting at the home of someone I took with through the Care site. I first communicated via email, then set up a face to face and met the kids. If it seems too good to be true, it is. USE COMMON SENSE! Seriously, if you don't have common sense you really shouldn't be taking care of kids, pets or anyone else!
Answer: Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe they have a big money backer and can screw people of their money and lack of customer service? They should be called, I don't care.com
Answer: If I were you I'd choose another site. Care.com is terrible.
Answer: Some of the clients are looking for cheap labor through the internet for housekeeping. I usually tell the person to call me back for interview finish. Then I would tell them that I am self-employed and they would need to file a 1099 for taxes to IRS.
Answer: Care.com is set up for parents that pay for the service... Parents can enroll for free and place and add. However, If they do not forward their credit card any messages from caregivers will have a blocked phone number. The babysitter cam also enroll for free and make a profile for her services. However if she does nor forward her credit card she can only apply to 8 jobs every 28 days and only the ads from parents that have paid for an account will be able to contact her. DO NOT respond to anyone contacting you on your phone that did not contact through Care.com first... This is always a scam... The message will look like this: I am moving to your area soon and need car for my son/daughter. Kindly respond to my email.(They are looking to scam you for money.)
Answer: Sitter city.com could help you. I have honestly had nothing but problems with care.com. They make up rules as they decide not how things are written and do not follow their own privacy policy. They feed on single moms and dads. As well as children providing for aging parents You can place an add on Craigslist as well, for free and your prospective employee provides their own background check as it can be a most recent one and obtained by themselves at 5 to 10 dollars

Hey To, I'm sorry that you missed our auto renewing feature, we always want our members to be aware of this which is why we disclose it on the enrollment page before you purchase a subscription. Also, closing your job post does not cancel the subscription, whenever you want to cancel an account you can always contact us or go into your profile and settings. I hope this was helpful and wish you the best on your search!
