These bastards charged my freind direct visa debit almost 70 pounds, she had never downloaded the app in her entire life and had never ever payed for anything from them, we contacted them and the idiots actually saw that she wasn't ever signed in with or had any details on their database at all, so after a hard look the sneaky $#*!s has hidden the receipt of purchase in her spam folder, not in here main emails, any receipt u get always goes straight into your main email not hidden away in spam please AVOID these bastards or you will loose money to things you haven't ever subscribed to, I had a look online and there are loads more people who have be n sneakily charged as much as 100 pounds, these people are fraudulent money stealing $#*!s

They lure you with "7-day money back guarantee" and "cancel any time" promises. What they don't you is they will do anything to stop you from getting your refund.
My bank informed me that the card was charged $69.99 for a one-year subscription starting from the same day. I cancelled the subscription right away and received an email confirming the cancellation. I wrote to Busuu asking for refund. The "customer service" rep first said I didn't cancel the subscription. After I showed him the cancellation confirmation, the same rep said no refund anyway. It was clear that they don't put their customers first. I think it's fraudulent.
I can't get my head around that app. Very slow and confusing. I've asked for refund wright next day but no response. Money been taken whole the full year up front.
DO NOT SIGN UP! I wish I had seen the Busuu comments before I signed up. I have just been charged 69.99 for a subscription I had no idea was going to be taken a year later. No notice about a renewal whatsoever and I cancelled my account on the same day when I was charged and informed them. I received no answer and had to chase them up, only to be told like everyone else that they do not refund! Did I not read their sneaky T&C's? I did not set my PayPal account to renew this transaction, so somewhere in their terms they manage to keep the automatic renewal really quiet. Utterly unacceptable and I will find a way to report this and spread the word about their complete lack of professionalism and transparency. What a horrible foundation for a company to be built upon. No integrity, zero customer service and let's watch them fall into the going nowhere but down app.
I echo so many people here... I regularly check my app subscriptions on Google and cancel any I no longer require. I've recently been charged £45.99 from Busuu for a 12 month subscription. This is an app I've not used for over 6 months. There was no notice that a payment will be taken, if there was there is no way I'd agree to another 12 months. I believe this behaviour is underhand and sneaky, and judging by a number of other reports online, I'm not the only person to fall foul of this. Stay well clear of this app.
Signed up for the premium membership last year for a cheaper price but stopped using the app after a few months as I didn't like it. I had forgotten all about ever subscribing until a few days ago when I was horrified to receive an email from PayPal saying I had been charged £69.99 for a subscription renewal I didn't want and can't afford. There was no prior warning email to say my subscription would be renewed soon, they just took the money from my account and when I immediately cancelled and requested a refund I was refused. Avoid this app!
Used this app to learn French. After a month, felt discouraged. The conversations are so fast paced (voice sounds weird on slower pace, basically it's useless) and they use so heavy vocab, felt completely lost. The study plan they suggested seems unreasonable unless you're great in memorising stuff, I can't with everyday work. This app is not for beginners and for working professionals. Duolingo is a snail but much better than this. Thinking of giving up my subscription paid to busuu. Looking for some other more encouraging app.
I wish I could give zero stars. Terrible customer service, and utterly dishonest with their terms and conditions. All of their customer service agents contradict one another and they continue to take hundreds of pounds from you. Despite trying to escalate the initial complaint, they "template respond" and don't actually read the complaint.
Shame as the app could be good, but I suppose bad employees make for a bad company!
I used Busuu for a while and did enjoy the app. I quite like the way you can interact with native speakers and although I needed an additional book, I think the 34,99 were worth it. At first the app for Japanese was broken, making it difficult if not impossible to progress as it started showing only kana texts and romaji wasn't working. That did eventually get fixed, improving the experience.
When I bought the membership, I paid 34,99. Recently they charged my card for 69,99, and are not at all apologetic about it. Their reply was something like "we are sorry YOU were not aware that YOU signed up for a recurring subscription", not to mention the price hike. This is a very wild west way for making money, charging someone without notice or warning a year later, for another year. Not to mention that under Dutch law, the latter is illegal. I am not sure how this is across the EU, but maybe it's the same.

A quote from their website: "Een abonnement mag niet automatisch worden verlengd, tenzij je het abonnement na verlenging op ieder moment kunt opzeggen met een opzegtermijn van 1 maand".
This would mean you can cancel your extension of 12 months immediately after they charge you and get a refund for 11 months, unless you explicitly agreed to their extension. If they don't, they're breaking consumer law.
It's a shame Busuu operates like this as I really do like their product, but conning people into unwanted yearly subscriptions by preying on their humanity (we all forget and make mistakes) is beyond rude and shouldn't even be allowed. And do note, it is not allowed! (at least in NL).
I could have seen myself returning to Busuu periodically when I wanted to, but they are far too good at ruining customer satisfaction. Far too many companies forget that customer service is 50% of a product's perceived value and satisfaction. I can only assume this business model works really well for them as it must make them a lot of money, even though it frustrates and angers scores of good people out there.

This is not a good way to learn a language as it skips lots of steps and practice required to continue learning. More importantly, when you cancel the membership through the app it doesn't actually cancel it! I cancelled my membership more than 6 months ago but just received an $80 ridiculous fee for renewal for something that I thought was cancelled! But apparently when you cancel through the app it doesn't actually cancel. They refuse to give a refund on the auto renew even though I cancelled my same account twice now, the 2nd time having to go online to confirm that it's really cancelled now. This is a money-making scheme. No customer service or consideration was shown even though I messaged the company MOMENTS after they sent the charge through. This is a terrible company and horrible service!
As many of the complaints posted on this site and around the web I didn't notice (or I didn't sign for) this clause.
The super annoying fact is that they don't send you any notice/warning about the date your premium subscription is about to expire; they just charge you on your credit card or PayPal account letting you know about it after they've already taken (stolen?) your money.
I opened a dispute on PayPal and after Busuu never provided any evidence on this matter I got my money refunded.
I know about other people who were charged on their credit cards that were able to cancel their transfers through their bank.
I just wanted to warn everybody to cancel your premium subscription as soon as possible in case you're not interested in renewing it, because this company won't!
Update: I am reading about a lot of people who say they had actually cancelled their premium membership but were charged just the same, so just delete your account ASAP!
EU customers are protected by EU regulations and if busuu refuses to reimburse you 100%, do not accept their 50%offer and ask your credit card company or bank for a chargeback. Important do not use busuu during that time.
Worst language learning online. They chanted my paypal without authorization. I just noticed it and emailed. They are yet to refund my last 2 charges.
Nowhere on their account page do they allow for this setting even though they charged automatically. This should be re-tweeted to social networks. They do not have a phone call center to complain and take their time to answer complaint emails. I will be reporting this to the IRS line.

They refused to refund my money even though I don't use their service and didn't authorize continuous payments. So now I am forced to go through a lengthy process with my credit card company to get my money back.
I was horrified that Busuu (a company I have never heard of) deducted £69.99 from my PayPal credit account and they claimed I have subscribed with them (which was not the case). It felt like they had committed day time robbery, on tackling this by contacting their customer service wasn't great - the agent 'Andreea' refused to refund my £69.99 and displayed a great deal of disinterest and an attitude towards me in her email, which I reacted very badly and reflected this in my response to her email; she had dismissed my clear state of distress. I even explained my personal circumstances of homelessness and financial difficulty, and that I can't afford these fraud committed against me, especially in these times of extreme hardship. She then referred me to Paypal to cancel this mysterious subscription and get my refund back. When I contacted Paypal and sought advise, I raised a fraudulent case, the agent informed me that the Busuu agent was being dishonest and had misadvised me, that they are holding my money, therefore I should go back to Busuu and get my refund back as my money is with their company, not with Paypal.
After googling Busuu I learned it was a company that provides learning new languages, and by default I am a woman with a polyglot background, I was not required to learn additional languages, at least not at this stage. I would never have subscribed to this service, especially through PayPal and it is a lot of money for me to spend on learning a new language.
Update:
After going back and fourth with contacting Busuu and PayPal, a member of Busuu staff by the name Christelle communicated with me by email. She was much more professional, cooperative and helpful, which was such a relief as I was losing hope. Thanks to this member of staff that I managed to get my full refund back.
With further investigation on my side, I discovered that this subscription went back to a time when multiple fraud was made against me by the same two individuals from last year which still impacted me recently (i. E. Busuu payment), it was so serious that the police and a fraud team were involved, as other people have been victim of their fraud crimes too.
I realised that Busuu was a legitimate company, that only acted upon an online request made by these fraudsters.
Christelle (Busuu agent) treated my case sensitively, unlike her colleague before her. I am grateful for this. I have not used Busuu service to comment or provide a specific star rating, but I give Christelle 5 out of 5 for handling my case as it was a very delicate situation, being that I am a vulnerable customer. I gave overall 4 out of 5 rating. Thank you.
