1) For disputes, dispute with your credit card company right away, or dispute with the company via e-mail, so you can prove to your CC company later (if they don't refund you) that you disputed the charge immediately.
2) DEMAND in writing that the company removes your CC / payment information if you can't remove it yourself.
3) If you do order from this company, take a screenshot or picture (and video) showing that you turned OFF the "auto-renewal" when your subscribed. The video is so they can't claim that you could have changed it to "auto-renewal" after taking the picture.
The site fills you with so many junk mails, that when you get an email reminding you that your subscription is going to expire, you just don't notice it.
The platform automatically charged me for the annual membership (which I didn't want but didn't notice because of the supposedly stacked mail with the thousands of marketing emails you receive), which I wrote to them as soon as possible after the charge explaining the situation and requesting a refund since I was within the grace period.
Their response is simply to excuse themselves with terms and conditions conveniently covering them and not the customer. I don't think it is at all legal for them to force you to take a membership that you don't want.
I canceled my subscription on the day it renewed and Busuu refuses to issue a refund. They quote policies which disadvantage the consumer but offer no solution. The app is simply not worth $79.99 a year especially when you get trapped into a renewal you do not want. Stay away from this company.
I really liked Busuu, I bought 3 yearly subscriptions, one for myself, one for my partner and one for my mother in law. However, since they offer huge discounts for the first year and charge you full price after that, I made sure I cancel all 3 subscriptions in advance and decide later whether I want to continue or not. I cancelled all 3 subscriptions months prior to the subscription ending and under Settings in my Profile it said the subscription is cancelled. Today was the last day of my subscription, I checked the settings in the morning and the afternoon, it said it will end today. 15 min before midnight I checked if the subscription ended and to my shock the message changed to: "Your subscription will automatically renew on. If you don't want your Premium subscription to renew, please cancel before." Just that, no dates or any other info... Below is the button "Cancel Premium", when I try to do it, asks for a reason and after that nothing happens... this is a total scam. Waiting for the support to react, otherwise, I am going to contact my credit card issuer and try to get a refund.
My experience with Busuu was nothing short of a complete disappointment. My son signed up for their language-learning app one year ago, paying for an entire year in advance. However, the app proved to be ineffective for him, and he only used it for a mere three months.
Despite the lack of use, Busuu yesterday charged us an $69.99 for a one-year renewal without notifying the Paypal account used to pay for the subscription. When I immediately reached out to their customer support team to request a refund, they callously refused to grant one, citing their one-sided terms and conditions.
It's clear that Busuu is a company that cares only about their profits, rather than the satisfaction and loyalty of their users. By resorting to deceitful practices to take money from unsuspecting customers, they have lost any credibility they may have once had. Save yourself the frustration and financial loss by avoiding Busuu at all costs.
Worst customer service ever! I found out that my account auto renewed without so much as receiving a reminder email from Busuu. I reached out to them less than 24 hours after the payment went through to ask for a refund and they responded with a big fat "No", citing their terms and conditions. How on earth do companies think it's ok to trick customers into paying for a service they are no longer using and to show no understanding what so ever when a subscription has been accidentally renewed? It's not like I waited weeks to ask for a refund -- I asked for one less than a day afterwards! To me that shows a complete lack of understanding towards their customers.
To make matters worse, I was pretty darn certain I turned off auto-renew when I originally signed up. I went to cancel auto-renew again and it won't take. I logged out and logged back in to see that auto-renew is still turned on. I had to reach out to them yet again just to turn off auto-renew and who knows if that will work. I am convinced this company is a scam.
Sadly because of this experience I will never return to using Busuu again in the future. That's really too bad as I love learning new languages and I am certain I would have returned as a customer in the future.
Learn to be more understanding of your customers if you wish to have then return!
Canceled my premium membership a YEAR ago, only to be charged the full subscription amount today. I have no idea why I'm being charged, and my account doesn't have any subscription info. Tried calling the number and was old my an automated voice that the mailbox was full… absolutely embarrassing on their end. Still no response to my email. Without a doubt, this is my last time using this app. Absolute robbery.
Busuu has automatic renewal of Busuu Premium. They tell you the day before that it renews, but you are not allowed to cancel at that time. So not impressed with policies listed in the fine print. Product is OK, but probably not worth 80 euros per year.
The product is okay, alternatives such as Rosetta Stone and Duolingo are much better in my opinion. My one star is for being charged after on auto renewal. The company would not reverse the charge. They have a terrible reputation for that (look online). I had not used their product for months and was surprised to see a charge. I believed I had canceled, but had no record of it (my fault). Anyways I asked the company to reverse the charge and the response was we basically they canceled it now but I would have to pay for the full year. What a tacky way to do business. Stuck using this app wishing I could go back to Duolingo.
Send my 8 year old kid hundreds of emails but then when the annual notification they send through to spam so he wouldn't have seen it! £80 taken and now they ignoring me!
I got last year a one year Premium Subscription with a 40€ price.
This month after one year I have tried to calcel automatic renewal.
Their web interface contain multiple stages of cancellation buttons, where last one is hidden in the colors where one could not notice it, and you do not know whether you have to press it on or not. I assumed that my cancellation process is complete. But it is NOT.
Busuu charge me 80€ for another one year Premium Subscription where I do not need it, and I do not want it.
Busuu is just a fraud company which is getting your money by selling services, that you do not need it any more.
I have a fatal recommendation for you, if you accidentally subscribe to it, just cancel your automatic renewal by following all steps. Be careful in the last step. Where there is a hidden last button that you have to press on. And be sure that you get the cancellation confirmation.
And most importatly, cancel your payment medium as well.
My payment was through PayPal and you have to also cancel PayPal automatic renewal order in the PayPal system.
In best case, do not use PayPal, just use secure online Credit Card banking where limits and purchases are 100% in your control.
Otherwise, PayPal will not accept any excuse and be a business partner to Busuu to charge you 80€ like a robbery in the streets.
I have purchased access to a paid subscription for one month. The site secretly subscribed to premium access and debited money for the second month. A typical fraudulent scheme.
I signed up for a yearly subscription with Busuu two years ago. I was using the service for a few months, but then I forgot that I had it. A few days ago, my subscription auto renewed for another year. I emailed Busuu immediately telling them the situation saying that I would like to both cancel and receive a refund for the unused year that I had just, that day, paid for. A rep from Busuu messaged me back saying that I could cancel my subscription but that I would be unable to receive a refund for it. I find this really unreasonable since I emailed them the same day that my subscription was auto renewed and therefore had 365 days left on it. Why should I pay for something that I am not going to use? Since this is a digital product, Busuu doesn't occur any kind of loss besides issuing me a refund for this unused product.
This company charged me for a yearly subscription without my knowledge. When told that I was unaware of this charge, they told me that they will not refund my money. This is an extremely shady company that you should be careful to not trust your money to!
My friend sent me a referral code to try a month of busuu out free, I was liking the website but I didn't think the course was strong enough to keep the subscription going past the free trial, so I canceled it. End of story, right?
Oh, how wrong I was. Even though I canceled auto renewal on the website, I was met with an $80 charge on my card which I had my bank deny. My bank then proceeded to send me a new debit card with an entirely different number. A month later, I get another message saying my bank denied an 80 dollar charge from busuu. But this is a new debit card number, how could this be? I go and check PayPal auto subscriptions, busuu nowhere to be found. Same for Google play, nothing in subscriptions. I genuinely don't understand how I'm getting charged on a new number. I deleted the busuu account entirely which "says" it'll cancel the subscription but that's what it said the first time I had supposedly canceled it. I have no way to tell if I'll get charged again until next month, and if that's the case I'm going to end up having to talk to my bank and go to busuu's customer support. I'd honestly stay clear, look elsewhere if you're trying to learn a language because the business practice just isn't worth the headache here.
I'm another unhappy customer whose account was auto-renewed without any notice. They charged twice as much as I paid the first time. When I contacted Customer Service, they refused to issue a refund. Horrible business practice!
If I could I would give 0 star review.
Woke up today, to find out that I was billed 1 year premium plus subscription, even though I clearly remember cancelling my renewal plan, which they claim I didn't do, sent a refund request, still waiting for an answer. I am stundet, still looking for a job, kinda of hard with everything going and stores are closing down.
How can they charge customers with notifying them before hand.
Shame on you!
I enjoyed using Busuu to help me learn Mandarin. I was happy to sign up to the Premium Service. However, I have now had my subscription renewed with absolutely no warning or reminder.
While I may have decided to renew my subscription anyways, I think it is a very very sneaky way of getting money out of customers. They use the excuse of 'not wanting to interrupt your learning experience'... which is a load of rubbish. It's just a way of taking £70 out of your bank account without any warning, for a service you may no longer be using.
They know that if they send reminder emails, a significant proportion of people may decide not to renew.
To be honest, I enjoy using Busuu... but this approach and their rude customer service has left a bad taste. I will be cancelling my subscription in the future and next year, will be looking for a learning tool with better morals and customer service,
Busuu make the dubious claim that they auto renew your subscription (without notice) to prevent interruptions of your learning experience. This is nonsense. If you are still using the service they can easily pop up a dialog if you are in danger of being unsubscribed. It like most folks, you give up on the poor service where you are not only the customer, but they are selling work you provide to other user, then they will happily charge you card without notice to prevent interruption of cash flow into their pockets.
On top of that, the cancellation process has a deceptive UI, which you feel that I have gone thru the necessary steps to cancel the service, but there is one more greyed out button to click to finish a process that you have already clearly indicated multiple times you wish to no longer participate in the scam. Double, triple check you cancellation status.
The humorous response from Customer Service that "We do inform all our users about the automatic renewal at all stages prior to the first initial payment." Prior to the first initial payment, but then never, ever, again. Surely you remember that website you signed up for a year ago, and were constantly asked to grade other students work (aka free labor) as if you were a "mentor" to them.
It may take a while before you decide that you providing more of a service than receiving one from this company. But when you do cancel your subscription right away, then contact your payment method and make sure they will not complete a payment to an auto pay request from Busuu every again. Then log on to Busuu.com a couple more times and verify that you really have cancelled. You might be surprised that you failed to do step n+1 of the process designed to make you think you have cancelled but just need a few more clicks to really really do.
So many bad business practice, the smell of dishonest is overwhelming.
The customer service is extremely bad and it doesn't seem like they care about a person at all. This kind of a service to clients is unimaginable. All they care about is money.
I had requested to cancel my subscription and refund my payment on the day when the subscription auto-renewed. They flatly refused and in a very rude manner too. They don't seem to offer a personalized service. Avoid at all costs.
Answer: Never, Busuu it's a SCAM. They charge you even if you cancel the subscription.
Answer: Open a dispute on PayPal or cancel the transfer through your bank, you will have your money back. Don't accept any partial refund.
