They had great advertising, and wonderful reviews at the website (duh).

Little did I know: they're a database matching service, and not a very good one. They mass emailed our information INCLUDING MY PHONE NUMBER to multiple assisted living facilities. WITHOUT CLEARING IT FIRST.

They are so careless, they even sent notice to my mother's current facility TO WHICH WE HAD NOT GIVEN NOTICE. Fortunately, this did not damage her care, but not everybody stays at an ethical place. Want to take that risk?

Find a place that actually has someone sit down with you for a long interview, then accompanies you to the places they refer. It will cost you the same (nothing), and you'll be far happier. We fired "A Place for Mom (to get abused)" and were fortunate to find Senior Solutions.

The difference is night and day.

Daniel

As an RN case manager, I am unlikely to ever recommend your service again as my families report 'persistent' and intrusive calls. NOT a helpful service!

I also inquired online & NEVER even talked to anyone yet & I'm annoyed. They called 2x day even though I never asked them to. From that I decided to look at reviews. THANK YOU to all who posted reviews. A "FREE" service isn't "FREE" necessarily. I'm not pursuing their help now.

The Art of Gouging
December 28, 2016

I accepted a Respite referral from A Place for MOM. The original contracted fee was 20% of monthly rate charges. I received a statement from APFM that charged 30% fee was due. I figured it must be some mistake here. I called the billing department and left a message re: my concern about the 30%. About 5 days later I received a phone call from APFM and was told that the fees had gone up effective Jan 1,2016 and I should have received a letter indicating that change. Was told that it was permissible as stated in the contract as long as notice was given. She stated that she would e-mail me a copy of the notification. I received a notification and the contract. The notification was headed with Attention Executive Director. The contract and any previous communication written or by phone was in my name. I definitely would have remembered this letter. This is just another attempt to squeeze more money out of the facilities. I won't be accepting any more referrals from this unscrupulous company. We are small mom and pops operators how are we to care for the residents if all the money is going to the referral agency? The only thing they will hear is a boycott. It wasn't always like this.

Great if you eat Kosher
December 22, 2016

My mom loves non Kosher food. How can a place for mom welcome all if they are strictly Kosher. No dairy, shellfish, pork etc.

Nuisance
December 21, 2016

Continuous calling. Anybody that desperate can't be doing anything right, in my opinion. These people labeled a place for Mom call day and night. I don't think that anyone wants to be bullied by these people. I refuse to answer my phone when a place for mom is calling day and night. Thank God for phone monitoring. In my opinion this place is the worst. If anyone is in need of assistance, they certainly do not want to be harassed. In my opinion these people need to get a grip and stop harassing sick and elderly people.

I called looking for a Nursing Home for my mother in Orlando, FL. I was transferred to a "Nurse Advocate" who said, "sorry, don't do nursing homes, but call this number for a partner", who said, "don't do nursing homes in Florida... sorry... see ya".

Hmmm... might be a niche market there for ya.

Don't call them
November 29, 2016

I mistakenly called a "Senior Advisor" number for information about Alizheimers facilities but I was sent to "A Place for Mom". I spoke with Carol Kalmanoff who asked all kinds of personal questions which I refused to answer. She then said she would send me a list of properties in my area if I would give her my home address and I could call if I wanted to make an appointment. In actuality, she sent ALL OF MY PERSONAL INFORMATION TO OVER 20 SALES PEOPLE. I have been inundated with cell phone calls and emails. It's disgusting what people will do to make money. I have called her twice and she refuses to return my calls--what a surprise. Run when you hear this name.

I called to inquire about the services available and when it was determined that my loved one was too ill for the facilities offered by A Place For Mom, I was spoken to rudely, was offered no advice, and after less than a minute on the call she told me she had to take another call. It was a very upsetting call at a most difficult time. I would not recommend this service.

Unscrupulous Company
November 3, 2016

I am writing this review as an owner of a small assisted living facility that contracted with APFM. I urge anyone looking for assisted living not to go near APFM. Their business practices are horrendous and they simply put you on their list then blast your contact information to as many facilities as they can so they can claim a "referral fee" if you move into any of them. You will get harassed by their "elder care advisors" who most often do not understand assisted living and state regulations about who is appropriate. You will get badgered by facilites for months on end with phone calls and emails.

Here's the problem
November 2, 2016

The problem isn't so much A Place For Mom, it's their clients. I've had to look for assisted living twice for a relative and ended up at a place for Mom for one reason: These places hide their prices as if it were a state secret. So I end up with A Place For Mom or other broker because it's just too tedious to call every place in town. I can find out everything else I need online but not the prices. Hey, you prices with A Place For Mom who gives it to your customers. Why not just disclose prices right on your website? I tried emailing for prices and a salesperson called me! Aarggh..

Lead generating company
November 1, 2016

A place for mom is simply a lead generating company. I thought I was calling a facility to get their prices for an acquaintance of mine and they farmed out my information to several facilities (but not the one I wanted the information from). Nine months later I'm still getting phone calls even though I have asked them to take me off their list. Today during a work meeting I was interrupted with three phone calls from them. When I called back after the meeting, Paul said he could not take me off the list until they knew more about the decision my acquaintance made. In other words, he will lose his lead generation revenue if he takes me off the list. It's not up to me to share my acquaintance's information. I would not recommend calling this company. You would be better off calling the individual facilities your self.

We were looking for a facility for our mother in law. So we did like most people and went online. Well now that we look back we know what went wrong. They have every facility on their site but the phone number listed goes to aplaceformom not to the facility. So we wanted some other facility but the lady on the phone insisted that the one she recommended was much better We put mother in law there and it lasted 1 month. We called the place that we original wanted and found out why. The original facility does not pay aplaceformom the $8000-$******* fee but the one they told us about did. I could not believe that this is how they work. Try it you will see what I mean. I asked my web guy how they have so many good reviews on their site but all the other public reviews are bad. Well the ones on their site are the ones that aplaceformom chooses to put on their site. I will never use them again and I will tell everybody I know about this situation.

Our retirement community used to be a partner with A Place For Mom. Many of the criticisms I am seeing are sadly true. We decided to eliminate our agreement for many of the reasons I see in other reviews. The straw that broke the camels back was when I was hearing from persons who found us on the internet, unrelated to looking through A Place for Mom, that while on our web site a pop up asked if they wanted pricing. When they clicked on it, they were then directed to A Place fro Mom website and instructed to complete information. I would had not known about this except for a few families I had already been working with when they were trying to show a short video to other family. When I questioned this with the representative from A Place for Mom, I was told this is not possible. I then went to our web site with my personal phone and showed them. Sadly any lead we had with them we are obligated to pay a referral fee if they happen to move in over the next 3 years. Does not seem fair...

The local rep assigned to me kept following up, asking inappropriate questions about my parent. Shared my contact information against my consent with agencies who in turn contacted me via phone and email long before I needed them to do so. The local rep hung up on me after I didn't go for her bullish badgering. It seems she is just after a commission. Frankly, a very discouraging interaction.

I think this is a questionable business. Basically a real estate broker for nursing homes and assisted living facilities. I highly recommend avoiding APlaceForMom.com. It's a profit-oriented business that could care less about your loved ones.

Don't do it!
September 2, 2016

They call constantly... 3-5 times a day. Someone calls, you answer, they connect you to a 2nd person who just gives a list of email sites. This person doesn't listen to your situation. They break FTC law calling outside telemarketing hours. BIG MISTAKE ANSWERING THEIR CALL ONE TIME. It's better to just Google search and call facilities yourself. These people are vultures.

I expected this service to provide availability and references on the places they refer you to. The rep I was talking to worked out of an office located 75 miles away from the area I was looking. She couldn't possibly have any clue about the referrals she sent me. All I received was a list of facilities that I had already researched on my own. What good are they? Further, I was very specific on my mom's spend down situation and got referrals to private pay facilities that were way over my mom's budget that would ultimately force her to move after 3 months of using up all the rest of her money. It seems to me that they attempt to get you to land in one of these places so they can get a kick-back ($$$). Do your own research and invest in personally visiting the facility. No one cares about your loved one more than you. APFM's only vested interest is getting paid for the referral. Bad business model that isn't in your best interest. VERY DISAPPOINTED AND WOULD NEVER NEVER RECOMMEND A PLACE FOR MOM TO ANYONE!

I am an attorney who focuses on aging issues. I also have licenses in other professions that have ethical standards. I have been told by numerous marketing reps at various licensed facilities that they have received referrals from APFM reps who have never toured their facility, which raises the question of how credible can expertise be when the expert has no first-hand experience. APFM does not disclose to the consumer in their TV ads that their "free service" is compensated by the facility. My opinion is that APFM's advertising is misleading about their fees, and the "expertise" of their lead-generators is very shallow. In my opinion, APFM should AT LEAST be held to the same training and disclosures standards as a leasing agent at an apartment community. It seems remarkable and even shameful that this type of business is permitted to advertise without oversight and take advantage of vulnerable people. I do admit that some people have "used this service" and been referred to a facility that has met their needs. But it would be far better for a family member to use the internet and do independent research, consult a geriatric care manager, or a law firm that employs a care coordinator.

I was looking for a list of places or suggestions for Senior housing in a certain area in Florida. I had to give phone number and email to get it. Then I got 8 phone calls over 2 days from sales people blowing up my cell phone. In addition there were 3 email letters in my mailbox. I asked only to correspond by email. I finally decided to ask for more information- so I sent an email back answering questions they needed order "to help find housing for my mom" as they say. I received a curt email letter stating they had NO housing connections in that area only ones which were 5- 10 minutes further away. (Translation- none that my family could afford.) She made no suggestions. The representative stated she closed our file. Sounds like we didn't fit THEIR needs.

I was in a pretty urgent need for finding care for my grandmother that developed Alzheimer's disease and couldn't safely be cared for at home any longer. I didn't really know where to start... how much does it cost, which facilities provide secure areas to prevent wandering (which was a problem for us), etc. The A Place for Mom advisor was local to me, knew the facilities, helped me figure out how we were going to pay for it all, and helped set up tours. An extremely helpful service. All of this was free to me. The Alzheimer's care facilities pay a fee to A Place for Mom to be part of the service. For me, it was worth it for my family as well as the place where she ended up.
