Airbnb's reputation is significantly marred by persistent complaints regarding its customer service and the quality of listings. Customers frequently express frustration over inadequate support, particularly in resolving issues related to cleanliness and safety at properties. Many report feeling unsafe or misled by inaccurate listings, leading to financial losses and dissatisfaction. Conversely, some users have had positive experiences with Airbnb Luxe, highlighting exceptional service and quality accommodations. Overall, while there are isolated instances of satisfaction, the overarching sentiment reflects a concerning trend of unreliable service and a lack of accountability towards both guests and hosts.

Rented a place for a friend's wedding because all the hotels were booked d/t events in the area. Owner cancelled at the last minute because they sold the place. Never disclosed it was on the market. All the hotels are full so we're stuck driving long distance to and from the wedding. Airbnb says owners are free to cancel anytime so no guarantees. Tough luck!
Airbnb is Notorious for not looking after its hosts. Their customer service is absolutely disgusting and they constantly passed the back from one incompetent agent to another. Highly unprofessional and that's why I am going to change to cottages dot com next year
I paid and rented the place months in advance, two days before the trip I try to contact the renter true Airbnb but he didn't answer. I arrive at the place and the host was not there, contacted Airbnb and they provided the phone number of the renter, it was an answer machine. Call Airbnb to solve the problem and was transfer to a special team that I have to wait 30 minutes, for her to tel me she was going to contact the renter and get his story, I may just get my money Bach but I will have to pay my taxi números times and a hotel for a lot more because I didn't do the reservation in advance. It was not clear if they will reimburse my taxi and hotel and maybe they will let me do another booking on my own, instead of focusing on my trip. This may happen to you.
Horrible experience with a host and unit, host did not care, dirty, lots of non working things, air bnb did nothing, I ended up paying full price, I left a negative review and airbnb took it down for ridiculous reasons and the host posted a negative review on me! So in the end I spent a ton of $ on what should of been a nice unit, and got no customer service from air bnb and myself got reviewed negative. I will never use them again. Their reviews cannot be trusted! They don't care about you or your stay, they just want to prop up their slum lord hosts and continue bilking money from consumers.
Host was very intrusive and weird. Sent an email wanting to give tour of a 2 bedroom apartment. I didn't request a tour and operating an exhaust is not difficult which was his excuse for wanting come in the space we rented. He knocked on the door 9pm at night. He literally tried to push his way through but I blocked the door. My family was very uncomfortable so we left late at night and had to find a new place to stay during a graduation weekend which meant places were expensive. Understand this we are African American in a predominantly white environment which we had to be mindful of how we handled this man who probably knows all the police due to it being a small town. So even if we had a valid complaint against this man what's the likelihood of us getting justice or treated fairly. The safest thing for us to do was leave this man's property
I rented an apartment in Paris for one week. The Airbnb photos looked fantastic; the reality was a filthy dilapidated apartment that reeked of stale cigarette smoke. And guess what? Airbnb doesn't care. When I wrote a true review of the filthy moldy bathrooms and kithcen, cigarette burned carpets, not working lights/ poor electrics, the Hong Kong based Chinese owner of this apartment had four fake reviews posted immediately. The reviews weren't even one sentence long. Did Airbnb take them down? Did Airbnb refund my payment? No. They refunded half of one night's stay so we paid for 7 1/2 nights at the most disgusting place I've ever stayed. We tried to get a hotel but Paris was literally full (of Americans!). We didn't let this ruin our trip but we will never use Airbnb again. I had been warned by several friends who've had the most awful experiences. Don't do it, it's truly not worth it. VRBO is more reliable as are realtors. Airbnb is a just a money grab for unscrupulous owners and Airbnb scumbag of a company.
Booked an Airbnb in Florida, checked in to property kind of late, around 7pm and there were tons of problems. Airbnb and the host were very helpful in refunding and helping me find somewhere to stay for the night. Which was a hotel suggested by the air bnb ambassador since we could not find another air bnb on short notice. I was told I would be reimbursed for my hotel stay since it was not planned and out of my budget. That night I booked another bnb for the next day. When arriving to the property we had similar experiences as the first property and requested a refund and to vacate the premises. That process went even better than the first time.
I have used Airbnb several times but my most recent experiences have been horrible. When I call them to explain or get help they have put me on hold, transferred me to other reps and then told me they would call me back. There is a host that is renting illegally and posted inaccurate pictures of their apartment. She has multiple bad reviews and changes her name and profile and Airbnb lists her as a "confirmed host". She seems to do this in several cities. The apartment I rented had legal documents from an attorney notifying her she was being evicted and still Airbnb has this listing active.
All their property descriptions are glowing... they lie. All my experiences with their properties have been abysmal. And when I wrote a recent review with 8 issues ranging from watered down bath products to weedy and rocky yards and broken furnoture, they refused to post it claiming I gave out the location... which I didn't. They only post good reviews. I will never book with them again.
I'm leaving Airbnb due to very poor customer service. Also - couple years ago it was worth it, you could find nice place to stay for decent price, now many places in Airbnb is more expensive than 4* hotels and places are with lack of hygiene or just nasty. Airbnb customer support doesn't help at all with scammer hosts.
So no - better take a hotel and avoid the headache you might have when arriving to place you can't take a shower cause it's enormously dirty.
I add pictures of what shower I got last time in flat in Tangier for 93€/night. Airbnb customer service didn't help, as I claimed the issue, the host left a bad review to me instead of apologizing and Airbnb wrote - issue solved. Thanks!
Host claimed it was pictures after I used the place and that I left the place dirty, though I have screenshots of her wishing me to come back before I complained and other proves that host is lying.
She even left a bad review about me which was all lie.
Airbnb allows these kind of hosts to do anything.
I was trying to obtain the invoice for 2 reservation that i made on this platform on the name of the company (we payed with the company card) and the consultant told me airbnb doesn't issue the invoice for all the payment! The only issue the invoice for the platform fee and for the rest of the payment there's no chance to obtain an invoice with the company's name. Incredibly. I never heard this lind of policy… i will never choose airbnb and i will never recommend this platform.
Booked a place for my Wife. When trying to get the access code, Air BNB said 3rd party reservations are not allowed. Can a company be more stupid having a policy like this. I have since read the Terms of Agreement and did not find this clause. I have spoken with their costomer service, a foriegn call center, and made no progress. Discretion being the better part of valor, I decided it was best to stop speaking with them instead of making this worse. But they kept calling back trying to tell me 3rd party reservations are not allowed. Until I told them I was going to block their number.
We do have the access code, my Wife is on the way to the reservation. I hope Air BNB didn't cancel it. If so she will find a Hotel instead. Then we will see how hard it is to get the money back.
They have it set up so there is a very good chance you will lose your money if there is any sort of problem. I've been in the service industry for 25 years, this is a very bad company to do business with. Just stay away.
I have been waiting weeks for reimbursement for damages done by a guest in June 2022 who put wipes down the toilet and broke the septic pump. I have supplied pictures, invoices, emails etc and still am waiting for reimbursement from Airbnb. I have sent numerous emails to Airbnb asking for this issue to be resolved and yet am still waiting. As a host who has done business with Airbnb for several years I cannot believe the treatment that I have received from this company. I offer my cottage to my guests for a lovely vacation. I should not be responsible for total disregard for the rules to keep the property running properly.
If you are a host and wants to try Airbnb think twice becuase of their customer policy. They will always sides for the customer even if you are right. If their is a zero star i would give this company that. Our case was the woman and her family is not content with our summer house. She has a lot of complaint while we specifically told every detail in our airbnb. We gave her option that we will refund her money in full but she doesnt agree and just want to have a discount we gave her a 100 euro of 600 euro and she still review us bad. The thing about review is when you have a bad review your point will be deducted and if you're not lucky you will not be a superhost. Your advertisement will not be anymore at the top. This company will make sure you will do everything to please your guest no matter the cost even if cost you if you want to get more customer. BTW they the customer service will never help you
I booked my first stay at Airbnb. The host offered a space with a patio near the airport. When I tried to book I was given a different address in a dirty house in a sketchy neighborhood. When I tried to get it resolved Airbnb support kept closing my case and then sent me a claim resolution link where I had to request my money back from the host that scammed me. Beyond ridiculous and totally unsafe. I have said goodbye to my money and goodbye to Airbnb.
Spent $6,700 for a one week rental of a 4 bedroom home managed by Bella Vita. Mice, mold, broken outdoor furniture, playset and deck with hole in it. Malfunctioning refrigerator, vaccum cleaner and disposal. With no options, I chose working with the management company. No resolution. Airbnb offers not recourse and lacks any quality control. BEWARE. Once you rent, you are stuck!
Bernie Madolf is alive and well and at the helm of AirBNB. When I rented a condo in Hawaii I had to walk past people shooting up and smoking dope to get to my busted busted a** apartment without a working light in the bathroom or refrigerator. The owner canceled my reservation but airbnb refused to ever return any money to me. Just yesterday a booking I had as a host from a year ago showed up and after 40 minutes of confusion on the name for the reservation decided to leave. I got it resolved immediately but Airbnb refunded the guest entirely. Costing me a no show cancelation to my condo association as well as a cleaning fee. When Ernie the idiot canceled my reservation he opened up my calendar which immediately resulted in a new booking. I had to cancel this new booking because I had already forfeited my no show time back to the condo association. When I canceled this reservation AirBNB charge me a $100 cancelation fee for canceling within 7 days of the reservation even though the reservation had only been made 20 minutes previous. This company is designed to scam and screw everyone regardless or guest or host. Steer clear and just get a hotel.
Airbnb always worked for me. Honoured all agreements. I have stayed in 2 diff. Private Airbnb apartments in Barcelona, 1 in Vienna, and 1 in Bordeaux. I have stayed in someone's home (house or apartment) in seven different Airbnb's England (in one of them three times in three years) and in houses that were part or all rooming houses in 4 locations in England. In Canada, 7 times in someone's home (Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver) and four times in an apartment in Toronto or Victoria. They have all been as advertised. When I left early due to dissatisfaction, I was refunded the amount (the host agreed to my leaving). When I lost a key to a lock, the host wanted $700 to install a new lock. Airbnb paid him $350 and didn't expect me to pay anything.
Airbnb is great as long as you are lucky enough to book all good places based upon the reviews. But as we just experienced, even though we we have more than 10 years of experience with Airbnb, our due diligence was not enough, because we got a dump. We took one look at the place and realized that it was nothing like the reviews. Worst of all Airbnb could care less. We had to leave the place for a hotel. DON'T TRUST Airbnb!
I have a moderate cancellation policy, which means guests can cancel up to 5 days before. Today, after my place was cleaned, I received a message from AirBNB that my guest due to arrive tomorrow has cancelled and will receive a full refund. When I called to ask how this can happen, she said the guest said Covid. I asked did the guest have to show proof of Covid, and the answer was no. AirBNB loses nothing from this cancellation nor does the guest. The only loser on this is the host. Some partnership.
Answer: AirBnB is the worst. You might be able to go to the resolution centre, but previous posts are correct. Watch your money with them. Once they make an error it's hard to get it back. You may have to go through the credit card you charged it to and even then the dispute process might take awhile. Hopefully, you have other money to use in the mean time or the date of your trip is at least weeks out? They are asking you to "verify your ID" so they can gain access to your linked in, Facebook and google contacts. They say it's a security measure to protect you and everyone else but it's not. They are pirating your info. They take your contacts and use it as a marketing tool for themselves or sell the contacts to other distributors. It's very common with sites like this now. If you want to continue using AirBnB you have no choice unfortunately.
Answer: Being a host, I can say that when things are going good, all is great, but if something goes wrong, as a host, you will not get the support from Airbnb that is promised. They do not stand behind their hosts, I find they like to a facade that all is great in the land of Airbnb. I have cancelled my listing and will not deal with them anymore in the future.
Answer: As a host & licensed realtor with multiple properties in both Los Angeles & Las Vegas which I book directly and also have listed with multiple vacation rental agencies, SAVE YOURSELF TIME, MONEY & AGGRAVATION by booking either DIRECTLY with the host or through other REPUTABLE Agencies, such as Roomorama.
Answer: I haven't been a host, but would certainly recommend that you read ALL the reviews here before getting involved with Airbnb. I can't think of ANY business of ANY type I would patronize that got a 1.5 star rating after 382 reviews.
Answer: They offered $25 discount of next booking I just chose to go else where
Answer: You don't. The only thing that you can be sure of is that if you have a problem Airbnb will be unreachable. They hide from dissatisfied customers and hosts alike. You are taking big chances when you deal with them. The benefits just aren't worth the risks.
Answer: No, you would be lucky and have to fight to get a refund if you cancel 1 day after you make the reservation!
Answer: Hello, First, the credit card co. Needs to be notified and will refund the amount spent. In turn, the cc co. Will backcharge. Airbnb is notorious for these types transactions and should be shutdown. Your son has learned a business lesson... research a business prior to do business!
Answer: This is the root of my problem with AIRBNB. They do not check to see if a host can legitimately rent the place they are advertising. In my experience, the host cancelled 48 hours before, claimed she was going to be evicted if she rented to me. I was only 3000 miles from home. AIRBNB offered me a 10% discount to rebook another place. I did not and will not use them again.
Answer: Susan's answer is very thorough and I agree with her. Even more important when booking places outside your country of origin to ensure you don't get a flea pit. Also, always look at the reviews, they are very important. If there is a really bad review, don't stay there. You need to check the locations online as well. You don't want to be in a bad, dangerous area... this just happened to someone staying in Philadelphia. If you have a problem, the AirBnB website is useless. Google the AirBnB customer service number from your location. Renee
