Airbnb's reputation is significantly marred by persistent complaints regarding its customer service and the quality of listings. Customers frequently express frustration over inadequate support, particularly in resolving issues related to cleanliness and safety at properties. Many report feeling unsafe or misled by inaccurate listings, leading to financial losses and dissatisfaction. Conversely, some users have had positive experiences with Airbnb Luxe, highlighting exceptional service and quality accommodations. Overall, while there are isolated instances of satisfaction, the overarching sentiment reflects a concerning trend of unreliable service and a lack of accountability towards both guests and hosts.

I booked a home for 6 college students to attend a game in baton Rouge. Informed the host. She asked if I would be staying with the students, I said no and asked if that would be a problem. She didn't respond, In 8 hours got a message that I couldn't book for family and friends nor would I get a refund of $691. When I asked where the policy was, they had ro walk me through finding it. About 4 clicks. Not next to the "Pay" button. SCAMMERS CAN HAVE A BALL OVA HERE!
A host cancelled on me 3 days before check-in, Airbnb informed me by email, refunded me, and gave me a coupon of like 35% of the refund too. In the email, they provided me with alternative bookings that are not suitable and are on the other side of the city. At this time any suitable bookings became more than double the old price and the coupon was never enough to cover the new price difference. I had to make my new booking and pay the difference. Airbnb ignored any communications after their initial email, while I asked for support to find a proper place and for a bigger coupon to cover the difference, they completely ignored me. From now on I will stick to hotels whenever it is possible, and you should do so.
Airbnb rips off customers, has rude incompetent customer service staff, rips off & panders on refunds by greedy hosts for cancellations weeks ahead among others. Avoid this corporation. I wish I saw all these reviews. It's not worth the loss of money and peace
I booked a 2 bedroom apartment in Mumbai, India by making full payment. The host declined the booking next day.
We booked for Manhattan, NY. (448 West 25th Street, New York, NY *******)
There is NO unit to rent.
The pictures the host (Spence) posted on Airbnb do NOT exist. It is a picture of somewhere else.
This listing is NOT verified.
Most likely the review was from friends and family who stayed there.
Short version - heading out the door for stay booked thru Airbnb. Son has accident, we have to take him to the emergency room. No chance to make the trip. Try to rebook, Airbnb says host's policies prevent rebookings and refunds, even in emergencies. $500 lost. Might be host's policy, but Airbnb can force its own policies or make exceptions if it wants.
Host of another property told us we had to book for four nights minimum because it's Airbnb's policy on short-notice bookings. It's obvious that Airbnb will let anyone list on the site and has no desire to protect consumers.
Business is about Trust. You can't trust this company or it's hosts and all those glowing reviews. The legitimacy of all those glowing reviews needs to be questioned. They don't show pictures from guests of the #AirBnBreality or the number of stars each guest rates the hosts. Never again! I will stay at a reputable hotel.
Buyer beware! Airbnb does not issue refunds over covid. You can lose tons of money if you get a positive test. Even worse... the policy allows for Covid positive guests to stay. No amount of cleaning can change the fact that a covid positive person might have just stayed prior to your visit. What a terrible policy...
I was physically threatened by a renter from their site and had to call the police. They wouldn't help mediate the situation to get this renter to leave, and wouldn't take down the undeserved poor review when I was clearly extorted and held hostage to either refund money or get a bad review.
All they care about is getting the fees. If you get a bad or dangerous renter, it's your problem.
We have been saving five years for my wife to go back to the Philippines to spend time with her mother before it's too late. She made reservations through Airbnb for a condo but then the airline changed her flight and she was going to need to leave the Philippines a day earlier. We contacted the host who said we couldn't change the dates but we could cancel the reservation and rebook. We went on the Airbnb website but during the cancellation process we noticed that the host had a "no refund" policy. Wasn't it curious how she suggested that in the first place? I saw a cancel button on the page so I hit it thinking I was cancelling the process but no, it cancelled the reservation and now Airbnb says there's nothing that can be done. We're just out all that money. I am beyond upset. We are not wealthy and this is a huge amount of money for us. Stay away from Airbnb. Far away...
If you really need a secure booking DO NOT USE Airbnb. Hosts can cancel your booking at any time. I booked something in Schenactady weeks in advance to take my kid to college. A few days before the reservation I emailed the host Ricky and asked if I could bring my dog. He didn't reply, he just cancelled my reservation! I immediately emailed him again saying I don't need to bring my dog and I don't want to cancel the reservation. Again, he did not reply at all! So unprofessional, completely unreliable, and it has put me off Airbnb permanently. If one host can do this, any host can, and there's too much at risk. I wish I could warn other folks who might book with Ricky's "beautiful" place in Schenectady.
Surprising that airbnb allows hosts to change the price from the time you see it on map, till the time you book it. Also take a screenshot of price after you put in your dates. They wrote i would get a discount for staying 7 days, then upon booking it, price changed, it went up 9.57 a night.
I told them it's bait and switch. They did not care. So document, document with a pic.
My experience was at Serafin Amestates in the Las Congrejas in Cabo San Lucas. Sergio is the guys name.
He promised me my $850 security deposit back, Never saw it. He claimed I signed a contract. I never did and he could not produce a contract for the security deposit.
AIR B&B DOES NOT HELP YOU, IT NEVER WILL. YOU WILL LOSE OUT IN ANY DISPUTE.
I suffered for one month with a drunk grifter I shared a kitchen and terrace with. I provided both my host AND AirB&B with video of her falling down drunk and peeing on the terrace. She often exposed herself during her falling drunk behavior. After multiple pleadings, nothing was done to stop this disgusting behavior. I wanted to leave but was refused.
And the stray dogs…. Unbelievable. I had to carry pepper spray and a large stick to protect my dog and me. Dog poo everywhere, stepping in new piles almost daily but was told I had to pick my small dogs poo up and place it in the container. Sent photos of unbelievable amounts of stray dog poo to AirB&B. Nobody cared. And the constant barking at night was unbelievable.
I arrived in July to 100 degree weather and no functional air conditioner. I was immediately yelled at by Sergio that there was no air conditioner listed on AirB&B. He changed his tune pretty quick when I screen shot his text to me that I had an excellent air conditioner waiting for me. He seems to be unable to keep his lies straight, in my experience. Again. No help from AirB&B.
Don't use 3rd parties for vacation rentals. Please don't. There are plenty of home owners that will work with you individually. Do that. Please.
Below is the one video I could upload of the drunk falling and peeing on the shared terrace
I booked 7 nights on Airbnb at 25 Vanburgh Steet, Mount Gravatt QLD (Bright Breezy House), when I moved in I was shocked at what I saw: the house was in a poor condition, hairs were everywhere on beds and pillowcases, dust could be found everywhere, ceiling was moulded, rotten gutter, unless hair dryer, disgusting cups, etc.
I changed my reservation to 4 nights but got little refunded($1600 paid for 7 nights, only $239 refunded, I wish I could cancel the whole trip, but it was not easy to find an affordable place at that moment), the host admitted the refund amount was incorrect and promised she would fix it, but she lied and did nothing since I left.
I reported this to Airbnb, got no updates in 2 days, and nobody responded when I tried to contact via message. I had to ring them and was told the support ambassador was not working, and the case was transferred to another person who knew nothing about the case so I had to explain again. And again it took 2 days (he promised me that I would get update in 48 hours), nobody responded. I called them again, the same things happened. So it was just in this loop again and again, and I got no progress at all for 7 days! Not even a complaint was logged for the host. It was so frustrating and disappointing dealing with Airbnb, apparently they didn't really want to help me, and instead they were just wasting my time!
Airbnb, you don't care about your guest customers at all, all your support process is just a joke, it is a process to do nothing and protect nothing. I wish I could just rate -1 stars!
We were trying to rent a space that listed as $135/night. But when hit buttons to reserve the cost included cleaning and tax fees which hiked price to almost 500.00. Then the system offered a "payment plan." In theory this is great, the total cost is more than I make in a week's breakdown of my income. Splitting the cost would still allow us to go. When I hit the buttons the second payment listed as nine days from day we booked. A good portion of US gets paid twice a month? How do they expect people to pay a second payment before their next check even comes? I had almost four hour conversation with the company trying to sort this out and negotiate for one more day given it's ten days till my next paycheck. There were five different reps including one supervisor and they gave five different answers with misinformation redirects and run around. If you don't want to give an option for a payment plan that's fine. Business prerogative, but if you do, at least have a policy that is flexible enough to allow for a reasonable plan. Not sure I'll use ABB again after the stress of this experience.
Customer service is absolutely horrible. I stayed in an Airbnb abroad and had a bar located right below the apartment. The noise level was unbelievable: the floors, the walls and furniture were shaking in the apartment until 5AM (!) daily. The apartment filled up with smoke during the hours of operations of the bar. I stayed with a minor and had to move out 4 days earlier. The host ghosted me and Airbnb customer service was no where to be found. Airbnb finally got back to me 3 days later after I moved out and kept bouncing my case from person to person. None of these people spoke English. They ended up declining my offer for a refund of unused nights because they claimed that the host disclosed it in the posting (but only partially). The host's post said there was a bar that operated on weekends until 3AM. No mentioning weekdays or that this place has such enormous noise levels that you can't do anything there other than party (and definitely not sleep). Also, no mentioning of the smoke. Airbnb made me sound like I was crazy in asking for a refund for unused nights. They could care less I was with a minor who was exposed to secondary smoking. Customer service was very preferential towards the host. Seems like a very transactional business model. I will never stay at an Airbnb again. I mean it. Also, they didn't post my review because I put the name of the bar in it and it violated the policy but they refused to give me rights to re-write it or edit out the name of the bar on their end. Also, they allowed the host to leave me a review that was not true. The host said that I "trashed" the place. I told them that I cleaned the place and left it in the same condition I found it and even took a video of the apartment when I moved out and have proof. The didn't care to see it. I called me credit card company and they refunded my money. UNBELIVEABLE that this company would be in business.
Place is not as described. Complete lie. Definitely not safe and secure as listed. Located in a slum with razor wire on both sides. Bio hazard mattresses and black mold. Airbnb did nothing to help, lost money since we had to leave early due to the conditions.
I have lost a lot of money of late. AirBnB posts a policy that states if the home is not what the advertisement states you get your money back and they will find you a place of equal or better value.
They did neither and I lost most of my money stolen from the owner and AirBnB just kept feeding me lines
And sending me new teleworking in the form of the AirBnB Ambassador!
They also sent me back 2 bookings from the same area that looked so similar - I thought I had made a glitch and didn't pay so I booked 2 places for the same week.
Clearly my mistake but they allowed the owner to profit over €600 for 50% cancelation fees.
This system is flawed and the service is terrible for money recovery.
AirBNB' s customer service is ineffectual and a pointless waste of your time if things go awry. You are as well contacting providers direct, and paying by Credit Card to protect your booking in the first instance. AirBNB does nothing to earn the commission it charges accommodation providers. Is it better or worse than others? Who knows? I do know that I would never use them again.
A scamming platform. A scammer from Morocco called Moad invited me to pay his family there. I paid them for a house which was unhygienic, dirty, in unsafe area where you can hear people screaming early mornings and late evenings as being aggressed by violent gangs. Drugs and crime very obvious. The guy harassed me on the phone saying I have to pay extra money and clean the house when I leave. I told Airbnb about this and the kind of dangerous guy they have on their website. I don't want someone else to be a victim as I was but they were not listening. They don't really care. Go to a hotel and be in peace of mind. Airbnb NEVER AGAIN.
Answer: AirBnB is the worst. You might be able to go to the resolution centre, but previous posts are correct. Watch your money with them. Once they make an error it's hard to get it back. You may have to go through the credit card you charged it to and even then the dispute process might take awhile. Hopefully, you have other money to use in the mean time or the date of your trip is at least weeks out? They are asking you to "verify your ID" so they can gain access to your linked in, Facebook and google contacts. They say it's a security measure to protect you and everyone else but it's not. They are pirating your info. They take your contacts and use it as a marketing tool for themselves or sell the contacts to other distributors. It's very common with sites like this now. If you want to continue using AirBnB you have no choice unfortunately.
Answer: Being a host, I can say that when things are going good, all is great, but if something goes wrong, as a host, you will not get the support from Airbnb that is promised. They do not stand behind their hosts, I find they like to a facade that all is great in the land of Airbnb. I have cancelled my listing and will not deal with them anymore in the future.
Answer: As a host & licensed realtor with multiple properties in both Los Angeles & Las Vegas which I book directly and also have listed with multiple vacation rental agencies, SAVE YOURSELF TIME, MONEY & AGGRAVATION by booking either DIRECTLY with the host or through other REPUTABLE Agencies, such as Roomorama.
Answer: I haven't been a host, but would certainly recommend that you read ALL the reviews here before getting involved with Airbnb. I can't think of ANY business of ANY type I would patronize that got a 1.5 star rating after 382 reviews.
Answer: They offered $25 discount of next booking I just chose to go else where
Answer: You don't. The only thing that you can be sure of is that if you have a problem Airbnb will be unreachable. They hide from dissatisfied customers and hosts alike. You are taking big chances when you deal with them. The benefits just aren't worth the risks.
Answer: No, you would be lucky and have to fight to get a refund if you cancel 1 day after you make the reservation!
Answer: Hello, First, the credit card co. Needs to be notified and will refund the amount spent. In turn, the cc co. Will backcharge. Airbnb is notorious for these types transactions and should be shutdown. Your son has learned a business lesson... research a business prior to do business!
Answer: This is the root of my problem with AIRBNB. They do not check to see if a host can legitimately rent the place they are advertising. In my experience, the host cancelled 48 hours before, claimed she was going to be evicted if she rented to me. I was only 3000 miles from home. AIRBNB offered me a 10% discount to rebook another place. I did not and will not use them again.
Answer: Susan's answer is very thorough and I agree with her. Even more important when booking places outside your country of origin to ensure you don't get a flea pit. Also, always look at the reviews, they are very important. If there is a really bad review, don't stay there. You need to check the locations online as well. You don't want to be in a bad, dangerous area... this just happened to someone staying in Philadelphia. If you have a problem, the AirBnB website is useless. Google the AirBnB customer service number from your location. Renee
