I purchased a book for my niece within the U.S. The seller did not indicate that the language of the particular book we bought was in German, not English. The seller is refusing to cover return shipping costs even though the item description is not what was indicated in the Order. Whenever I try to respond, the automatic customer service goes in circles. Terrible Customer Service. They are clearly banking on me not wanting to cover shipping costs for a small book so they still get the sale. Will never buy here again.
On 6/30/21 I placed an order with Abebooks. It never arrived. When I noticed that it had not come, I sent them a message. They said because I didn't notice within 30 days of the original order, I was not eligible for a refund.
Regardless of whether or not this small contingency is hidden within their terms of service, it's just bad business. I want my book, or my money back. Don't use them. Pay a little bit more for a book to use a good service.
I placed two orders with Abe books on the same day. The first order was delivered quickly, the communications were great and the quality of the books was good. If I had only placed the single order I would be giving them a good rating. For the second order I received the same tracking number as the first order. At this point I thought it was efficiency and was impressed they had combined the orders into one shipment. When the box arrived it only contained the books from the first order. After multiple emails that received ridiculous responses and failed to resolve the issue (their phone support is not active) I finally gave in and filed a dispute with my credit card company. They've lost not just a sale but a customer over really shoddy customer support. I won't be back.
I bought a book, had the order confirmed, the website said the book had been dispatched, then a week later I got an email saying I was being refunded because the "order had been accepted in error". It is clear they hadn't actually sent the book and decided to cash in on a higher price after the subject of the book died, a disgrace. Abebooks said I had been refunded and couldn't care less.
Total rip off stay away, fake site. They will steal your money like they did mine. Getting BBB and attorney general involved to try to get my money back. SHAM site
I gave this business a 2/5 because I spent a total of around $1,000 for books for Christmas and most of the orders went without a hitch. I had a problem with 2 sellers who sent me used books instead of new books. The books that I ordered were pretty expensive for paperback books because of limited printing ($67.00 and $48.00) which I was willing to pay as a Christmas gift.
The nightmare began when both sellers kept telling me that a new copy was coming into their warehouses (yes, they were two different sellers in two different states but their emails could have been interchanged.) I tried to work with them each for about a month. I finally gave them a date that I needed a trackable number by and, when I didn't get it, I applied for a return/refund.
That's when the real nightmare began. I finally got return labels from both and returned the books, expecting to see my refund as soon as they were delivered. It really isn't acceptable that I was the only one with anything at risk. They now had my money and I had no book. Then, it turns out that one of the sellers put the wrong address on the return label. How is that even possible? This book was then returned to me. I opened a dispute with American Express. While they were in the process of investigating it, I received the returned book back. I researched the address and discovered that the seller had neglected to put an apartment number on it. For 2 weeks, I asked for a return label with the apartment number because I wanted my money and didn't want the book. On December 4 (the original order was placed October 17,2021), I finally got my money back from that one ($67 + shipping). I also just received the corrected return label from the first seller this morning (December 6).
The seller of the second book received his book back November 27. On Friday, December 3, I wrote to Abe Books customer support asking where my refund was. I received an email this morning (December 6) asking me for the tracking number so that they could verify that the book was returned. Are you kidding me? This information was all in the information that I had to fill out for the return/refund, They were too lazy or stupid to even look at the information they required from me. I have told them that they have until Wednesday, December 8,2021 to credit my American Express account or I will be opening a dispute with AmEx.
Quite simply, dealing with this company is not worth it. I thought since they were now owned by Amazon, the customer service would be comparable. IT IS NOT! Alibris is another good source for books and I have never had a problem with them. I am an avid reader and still like the feel of turning the pages, so a good bookseller is important to me. I will avoid Abe Books religiously, however, because the problems are simply not worth it.
I had found out this morning that this company have been selling my books under a seller for a while now. My ISBN's are posted and everything. I have been trying to get in contact with the merchant and company altogether and have not received a response. I had attempted to post to their FB account and they don't allow messages or posting from outside sources. This is a licensed and registered piece of work and I plan on filing legal paperwork immediately.
Recently purchased a book from Abebooks that was advertised as "Very Good" condition. When I rec'd it, there was no way that any objective person would call it "very good". In fact, it was barely in the "Good" category, and should have been advertised as such on Abebooks. The sellers that Abebooks apparently are allowed to put any condition they want for their wares when sold on Abebooks. While it has enormous quantities of used books, I will no longer buy from Abebooks. It's just now worth the risk to me. I have found that "World of Books/WOB" is much more honest in the condition ratings that its sellers are allowed to use for their used books than is Abebooks.
I have never had a problem with any vendor on Abebooks. You must choose your best option based on condition, location, Shipping costs, etc. People whoa are dissatisfied don't do their due diligence.
I order a book in October and have contacted the seller 2x and no response from anyone. There is no way to call anyone and they do not respond to email now I am out $25 I know it is not a lot but every bit counts. I will never order from them again thrifty books is a better way to go and the make sure you are taken care of.
With a quick response to emails, they sent a full refund for my girlfriend no questions asked when she shared that the book she bought had too highlighting and writing in it. Books at amazing prices and fantastic service for us. Thank you.
DISHONEST COMPANY! DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING FROM ABE BOOKS! THEY ADVERTISE "NEW" BOOKS AND SEND YOU USED, DAMAGED SMELLY BOOKS.
THEY ARE SNEAKY AND HAVE ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE!
I ordered a first edition print of Redeeming Love, supposedly autographed by Francine Rivers. Instead I received a poorly packaged, low quality, low resolution print with no certificate of authenticity on the signature. This item was clearly printed on a home computer and sold as authentic. Fraud and rip-off!
1) I purchased a supposedly "new" book from them, but only after paying for it did they reveal that it was "used."
2) I paid for expedited shipping, but after paying for it, they revealed that the book would not arrive for up to 16 days.
3) I have tried to contact them to cancel my order bc of the above circumstances, but have received No Reply.
4) I don't recommend these people.
I used to like this site, and I bought a few good books from here with no problem. But the last year I've gone on this site, the books are so expensive! Their books cost more than Amazon! What's up with that?!?
After seeing the low ratings on Abe, I was nervous about ordering my book, "Representing the Invisible" even though it was a huge savings. I am so happy with the book which arrived two weeks early and in mint condition. I will be using Abe Books again!
Ordered a book from AbeBooks / Irish Booksellers in Portland, ME with delivery to Norway. The book condition was classified as new. When the order arrived, the "new" book was water damaged/moldy and packed in bubble wrap (can only guess why). The book had to be discarded. Contacted Abebooks regarding a refund and explained the situation/sent pictures of the damaged book. Weeks later I get an email that the cancellation/refund request has been cancelled. Stay away from AbeBooks.
My order is super late, I ordered on Sept. 6, and we are in mid-October. No one has contacted me yet!
*******335 But, They Can't Answer The Phone Due To Covid 19.
I Have Been A Customer For A While And They Are No Good--By Design.

They took my money and never sent a book. Charged me extra for 2-4 business days. Never arrived. Refused to refund because there was a tracking number. I had to drop course and lose 70%. The frustration alone. NEVER NEVER USE THIS SERVICE!
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
