In this website you can find find lots of books for way cheaper prices than other websites. And until now (bought 6 books) i never had a problem. This website is really useful for students, you can find new and used books for non comparable prices. Thanks AbeBooks!
Be careful in dealing with these sellers. I bought a hardcover, received a paperback. Five times the going price for a paperback. Inadequate refund, no return. Needless to say I won't be doing business here in the future.
They post inventory they don't have, find it cheaper in worse condition than you paid for, and then refuse refunds. AbeBooks does not police this at all - nothing you can do but send emails into hell that never get returned.
I sent a textbook to be bought back by AbeBooks who outsources all there buybacks to textbookrush.com and I was scammed! They sent me some crap about the book being counterfeit and them not paying me for it and the company keeping my book! I am very angry! They are crooked and should not be allowed to be in business.
2 out of 3 purchases ended up with problems. Sellers don't ship. They don't refund. There is no phone support. You write an email and they will get back to you... whenever. Havent purchased from Abe in a while and went back to buy an item. Now I know why.
If you are willing to waste money and time... go for it. Otherwise find another resource.
ABEbooks should have a more strict policy with the sellers. My particular experience goes with seller: LowPriceBookDeals. DO NOT ORDER FROM THEM! The buyer does not matter in here once you have done the payment. I ended buying the book from a seller in amazon since I needed it, after 15 days my abebooks order has not yet arrived (I paid for quick delivery, 3-5 days), and no way to get a refund/return. So for now I have paid twice the money for the book I needed and lost a lot of time.
CROOKED BUSINESS PRACTICES WITH SELLERS WITH NO CONSCIENCE! YOU WILL GET RIPPED OFF WITH NO RECOURSE WHATSOEVER! NEGATIVE 5 STARS!*****
What a ripoff! Sent a book to Abebooks that was in excellent condition and later received an email from Abebooks stating that the book had water damage. The book, in no way shape or form, had water damage... There are other more reputable online book retailers to use rather than Abebooks.
I just bought 7 books for about $33.00 (and a few other in the past). Five books were about $3.60 and 2 were about $7.60 all with free shipping. They were given good to like new condition ratings. 3 hard cover books appear to have never been opened, 1 library book was well read but the pages were pristine and the binding still good. The paperbacks either were new or in good shape. They all arrived within a week or less though the booksellers were within the next state. I am ecstatic. My only problem is which do I read first! I wish they took Discover or PayPal.
I purchased three books from this site. Two of the books I purchased ended up being the wrong books needed for my two courses. My professors changed the textbooks needed for each class. I attempted to return the books and get my refund from them, and both of the sellers denied my refund. Mind you this was well within my 30 day limit to get a refund. Apparently AbeBooks gives their independent sellers the right to deny someone's refund if they happen to purchase the wrong book. I am now screwed over because I spent over $200 on books and none of the original (TRUSTED) websites are even buying this book back right now.
I even contacted Abe's customer service and they basically said "sorry, you aren't getting a refund because the seller chose to not give you your money back." I am in my last semester of college and I have never had any issues with books, but this was my first AND LAST time ever using AbeBooks. Please spend your money with Bookbyte or Chegg, at least they have actual return policies and won't screw you over. Do not waste your time with this sorry, unethical excuse of a "business."
Got the books I needed for savings of 75% from what the university bookstore wanted. They arrived fast and in good condition. Thanks
I bought a US$50.13 academic book from Collina Books at abebooks.com, order number *******. The book was not delivered and I did not get a refund because I delayed complaining since I thought the book was delayed due to Customs processing. It is so frustrating because Abebooks protects incompetent booksellers who rip-off considerate buyers by depriving us of an opportunity to rate such sellers on their website. Stay away from Abebooks and Collina Books!
Sold me a book, took my money, two days later told me they cancelled my order. Now I have to wait a hope they give me my money back. Thriftbooks.com is far better.
Do NOT order from this site. They are out of Canada and are the middle man for books. I ordered a book that was suppose to take a month to get. I wait the month because the price was so much cheaper, should have been my first clue. After 5 weeks and still not receiving it, I contacted the book seller who only has an email. They wait 2 business days to contact me back only to be told they had no shipping or tracking information and the book should have been there. I called Abe book to find out what was happening, they said they had no customer service phone number for the Irish bookseller that I bought it from and that the only thing i could do was to work through email. Well, if they didn't contact me originally, what makes them believe that every would. I requested a refund through Abe books and they said it would take several business days to do. Ridiculous company and business practices. Not interested in helping you locate the book. Irish bookseller (3rd party) is also buying books from China or any other place that is not reputable and they can't track. I waited a whole month and now I'm stuck buying at full price. Totally illegitimate business... STAY AWAY!
For more than one month they kept my money, didn't send the book. The seller said he will not send me the book and the website said it is the responsibility to the seller to refund me. By the way my creditcard was deducted on the name of abebooks.co.uk
Abe Books seemed very efficient and pleasant to deal with - I wanted a copy of one of the books by Icelandic photographer Ragnar Axellson, and they had several in stock apparently (some at very high prices). I ordered the book in February and was told it would be delivered in late April - I waited. I was told another bookseller, Murray Media, was actually supplying the book. To cut it short, I could not track the delivery. They claimed it had been "lost in transit". Abe Books refunded my payment. When I questioned what had happened, the e-mails became curt and less well written! I won't be dealing with either company again. (PS Our local bookshop thinks they have found a copy, and at a lower price too.)
I have ordered only two books from AbeBooks, at different times, and never received either, though I wasn't charged. Amazon seems the answer, and I do order from them occasionally, but do people realize that Amazon owns AbeBooks? They acquired Abe in 2008, and are obviously content to let this bad situation continue.
Twice now I've ordered books with AbeBooks and both times have been very displeased. The first time was for textbooks. The delivery window was 7-10 days and in the end it took 2+ weeks. I had to write twice to find out the status of my order and neither time did I get a timely response. Classes had already started by the time I got the books and it put me at a real disadvantage. The second time was an email I received this week telling me the order I placed last week had been cancelled because the seller failed to deliver. Why are you allowing sellers to advertise goods that they don't have available to sell! There is such a things as inventory control that allows you to see your inventory on hand. I won't be purchasing books through AbeBooks again. I just can't be sure I'll ever get them, or get them in a timely manner.
I ordered a book I needed for a Bar Exam; ordered it four weeks in advance of needing it, so that it would come in plenty of time. Never received a notice that it had shipped. It didn't arrive by its anticipated due date, so I emailed the company, at which time they told me not only had it shipped but it had been delivered -- I never received it. Notified the company, and the seller is not responding at all. Horrible company. Fifty bucks for a book and have nothing.
Very unreliable and slow shipping. Its been 8 days, class started and no book. Never buy from them again.
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
