As a freelancer, the private and public feedback system is incredibly frustrating and unfair. Clients can leave you positive public feedback but also provide negative private feedback which factors into your Job Success Score. Freelancers have no way to improve their business and/or resolve issues with clients if they don't know what the issues are. Very unfair that UpWork encourages private feedback vs. asking clients to be open and honest with freelancers and then uses this information to bring down their scores and impact their ability to get future work. Also, much of the positive feedback a freelancer receives is excluded from the score unless it meets specific criteria like being given after a contract is ended and within 14 days. Many of my clients have preferred to keep contracts open for ongoing work but then this feedback doesn't count.

I recommend you to work with Upwork 100%. As a freelancer from Central America, I have been able to connect and do business with companies in the US very successfully, creating many new opportunities for my work life and increasing my income. I've been using Upwork for a decent amount of time. I was using it when it before it became Upwork. I've had a wonderful experience using it to connect to others looking to hire a ghostwriter, or are looking to hire a freelancer to do editing/proofreading of their works. Employers have been polite and great with communication, from my experience. I'm not the biggest name on the site so I'm sure, much like in person, there are those who aren't so good at communication or might exhibit bad business conduct. When that happens, Upwork is very helpful in acting on any reports so both freelancers and employers can feel safe during a contracts duration. I highly recommend Upwork for anyone looking to set their own working price, and for employers looking to hire a person or a few for a project, setting your own price for what you're willing to pay for the work if done successfully. The payment can be done via milestones, set by the employer for how much money is released from escrow per milestone for the entire project's lifespan, or the project can be paid for in full upon completion to the satisfaction of the employer.

Anyone can sign up with email addresses that do not belong to them.

Then you are stuck with their endless spam and no way to unsubscribe.

Upwork charges freelancers a 20% commission on work up to the value of US$500 (with each client). The commission rate drops for higher value projects, with 10% charged between US$500.01 and $10,000, and 5% once an individual client has spent over $10,000.

Some reviewers may find this unreasonable. I have a different take on it.

As a freelancer, I do most of my work myself. I don't hire anyone to help me. I do my own marketing, sales, billing, accounting, and then also have to do the actual work I'm hired for. As a soloprenuer, the economics aren't there to outsource some of the administration.

In previous years, prior to using Upwork, I've lost revenue because of being maxed out wasn't able to devote time to the administrative support tasks. With Upwork, I gained a significant amount of billable time back.

Let's do some math. The first $500 (per client) will cost me $100 (20%) to earn, so I only receive $400.

I could easily spend $100 on the following:
Finding sites,
Posting my resumes
Reading job postings
Writing Unique Cover Letters
Billing for my time
Accounting for the work I've done (justifying my billing)
Collecting on overdue invoices.

But with Upwork, I don't have to do any of that really. Once my profile was set up (easy migration from LinkedIn), I could start bidding on jobs immediately.

The system takes screen shots as I go (approximately every 6 or 10 minutes), and I don't have to worry about micromanaging what I'm doing. The screen shots are there for accountability.

I have the Time tracker open on my desktop, and it's another accountability tool. I keep an eye on how long it takes me to complete tasks, but don't have to also log the time while I'm doing the work.

Overall I would recommend UpWork to freelancers out there. My skills are in the area of administration anyway, so I find this is workable. (I don't know about other types of industries.)

It's better, easier, and right now, more efficient than paying an agent to represent me.

Upwork has hurt my confidence so much and hindered me from starting as a freelancer. It feels like they're outright rude and not at all sorry to see anyone go. This is not a platform for people who are just starting out, who don't have much on their portfolio. Try Upwork after having a decent portfolio and video ready. I will not be coming back. I haven't had such a bad user experience anywhere else.

This is one of the greatest platforms. My experience here has helped me to solve personal issues, learn and guide myself beyond the knowledge acquired, so I like it, it's excellent!

Upwork is an excellent platform for freelancers. Exposure to the global standards and work requirements here, helps you polish your raw edges.

I am lucky that I have worked with the best clients thus far. Only one customer is kind of absconding with this final escrow. But apart from that, I have only met with gems. That said, I have applied for various jobs with great excitement. It is not the money that turns me on, in the first place. It is the thrill and joy of working on an engagement that is close to my heart. However, on many occasions, I have sadly realized that requirements are posted but the respective clients do not look at them for days on end. They either never look at these ads, or look at them but do not respond to applicants. Eventually, these posts just fade away, for want of a better word. I hope Upwork has a mechanism to manage this, in the interest of all the stakeholders; the freelancer, the client, and the platform. The second category of the client is the one who never confirms the payment details, offers a low rate, but expects the moon and something else.

A user can easily understand their features like apply for a job, profile setting, account setting, get paid, tax information, connect & membership etc. I also work on other freelancer platforms like Fiverr, Freelancer, PeoplePerHour but when I compare to Upwork I realize that Upwork is the best platform where I can build my carrier.
