Upwork seems done for these days. Not many legitimate quality jobs available. Instead, connects baits thrive and the system itself is for draining everything off freelancers. The good old Elance several years back has gone and lost.

Scam site
July 20, 2019

This site is a scam. They over charge freelancers then rate them on a very low scale. The job posts are all scams as no one every hires. I have placed dozens of bids and no one answers. The ones that have invited me to bid are scammers looking for free work. Horrible site.

Odesk was best
July 19, 2019

Odesk was best but Upwork is not so good. Customer support is very bad. Hourly job was completed but they still charged me weekly. I talked with customer support about this issue. But they never return my money.

I'm not happy with Upwork polices and rules. Working there for a 5 year as a freelancer at Odesk. But after updating to Upwork. They changed many rules. And that's why lot of freelancers are leaving this site. Odesk and Elance was best. But this is not good at all. Increasing fee day by day.

I have been an active freelancer on Upwork for the last three years, with a top rated status and a job history of thousands of worked hours. Due to an issue in their system, most of my portfolio items suddenly disappeared. After discussing with support for over 2 months, they concluded that they can't bring back my portfolio just like that. When I told them that this issue has cost me thousands of dollars since I wasn't able to get any jobs these last months, many of my portfolio items have been lost forever, and I would have to re-build everything from scratch, they replied that they are willing to issue me 50 connects (which can be bought at $7.5). Terrible understanding of customer satisfaction.

Too much greedy
July 16, 2019

Upwork is now only thinking about making money. They don't care about freelancers. They are already charging 20% fee. Now, they are taking monthly fee too. Its very bad.

Upwork was oke, not great but oke, but now they are charging high monthly fees.

They also take 20% from freelancers, and now freelancers also have to pay to apply for you job. We won't be using upwork anymore for hiring. They were not even that good.

Now Upwork is trying to charge $50 per month so you can get access to any of your billing reports. What?

The reports themselves are not even good.

They lost a client here for sure! Not sure who came up with this idea, for 50 dollars a month! Come on! Atleast start at 3.99 or something like that.

This has to be the worst experience I have ever had with a company. I made a profile and I was it was suspended the next day. I called and ask why, they did not have an answer to my question. I've also heard stuff about this company from other people. Should of listened to them..

UpWork charges you 20% of all the money YOU earn which has nothing to do with them. By taxing the creative 20%, they make your proposal prices increase without even telling the client that they tax you. Then they make you PAY to propose to a client!

They take 20% from you, make you pay for connects, have completely unresponsive clients, will block you if you don't make money every week and make you PAY THEM to be unblocked to see clients.

$#*! UPWORK

As a client you need to pay 50 USD monthly in order to see the reports and timesheet of your freelancers! Too expensive.

Will ask for your Passport and government ID to open account and shut down your account for no reason given at all. I suspect they are fishing for private information.

Hello fellow freelancers! I must warn you before you waste your time like i did.
They charge at least 20% of your income on upwork. If your hourly rate is 60$, they release 48$/hour to you. I believe this portion is unfair. There is a wild competition among freelancers on upwork. To be able to get projects, you must decrease your hourly rates. It; s just making you less and less valuable. You may find yourself at 30$/h, 20% (6$) of this goes to Upwork. 24$/h, are we doing UBER? By the way they don't find any clients for you. You must spend hours to be able to find a project and convince the client.

After you work for hours, Upwork may suspend your contract with your client without asking you any single question. So you may find yourself unpaid and helpless with tired eyes looking at the screen. They don't have an online help service. They want you to send an email to them regarding this contract or payment problems. And what you get as an answer is a list of possibilities why the contract is suspended. When I told them I will cancel my account and leave if they don't pay the money I deserved. They sent me a reply explaining how to leave! :): ) Thanks for showing the way out! They make money from your efforts and they even don't ask any single question to you before they dare to suspend your contracts.

I feel extremely disappointed. They don't have clear guidelines showing how to use the hourly working system. And if there is anything missing, even if the job is done, even if the client has no complaints, they may suspend the contract. They are disrespectful to your efforts. My client felt bad and he tried to pay me out of upwork since he knows i deserved that money.

As a company CEO I used Upwork regularly relying on feedback reviews as a main indicator of the capability of the freelancers. NEVER AGAIN. I have confirmed that Upwork regularly remove negative feedback if a freelancer requests that it be removed. This means their entire system is manipulated to disadvantage hirers in favour of freelancers without any concern for the legitimacy of integrity of the system.

Hello all start reporting Upwork to the FCC and the Securities and Exchange Commission thats the federal level then also each state in the US has a consumer protection agency at that states Attorney generals office also each state has a labor board that you can report to so thats the state level you can also report to and this info is for both Freelancers and people or companies that hire the Freelancers that have been wronged by Upwork If there is money being held by Upwork some states will suspend them from doing any business in that state until these issues are resolved in some states you can literally shut them down and flood them with legal issues such as state licenses and getting bonded in that state etc etc
I had several thousands of dollars invested in Upworks stock since they became a publicly traded company but after reading all the nightmare reviews I have dumped all the stocks I had in this company I wish you all well and remember there are scammers on both ends here but when the base company seems to also be scamming Freelancers and the people or companies hiring them just is not a good formula for an investment or to do business with in any form

I hired a freelancer and he did some work and repeated pushed me to close the job to only find out that he has changed the entire coding structure of the plugin as he pleased without sticking to the guideline. So I opened a dispute to get my money back, and upwork has been dragging this without making a decision while the freelancer is not replying to the dispute. The dispute was reported and told to be open May 9th, 2019, and I contact them via chat both on the 9th to open it, 14th May to check, for them to to only tell to check back 2-3 days later, and then again on the 15th May I went to the dispute center, and saw that they have actually opened the dispute on the 14th of May and NOT ON THE 9TH when I reported it. Then they give me more excuses (T&C quotes) about their darn policies and tells me that the freelancer has 4 working days to report back or they will take ACTION. Today is 23rd May, 2019 and they have given the freelancer another 2 working days to respond WITHOUT TAKING ANY ACTION as stated & providing me more T&C's to justify there incompetency. Wasting my time and holding my money. Will never use these thief's again, taking the side of fraud freelancers and taking customers for granted.

I posted my work and got contacted by a freelancer who convinced me I had to pay a milestone upfront, I thought that Upwork was a good platform and would protect me if this person was going to scam me, but they sided with the scammer and told me there was nothing they could do about it. I am never using Upwork again!

I tried to register on Upwork twice. Both times the account was suspended despite the fact that I did nothing at all! I will look for another platform.

Signed up and contacted a few freelancers. Decided to hire local and simply stopped talking to them. 6 months later, I saw a $2.50 charge from them. I logged in to see what was happening. One of the freelancers was charging me small amounts (so I wouldn't notice) even though no tasks were given, and no hiring was done. They have totaled to about $100. Contact upwork and the response "It has been too long, nothing we can do. Here is a credit of $2.50 for the most recent one."

Ask for a supervisor and still nothing. Time for a bank chargeback, and a complaint with the BBB. This company is a horrible SCAM!

Believe the horrible reviews, this company is the worst freelancer company out there.
