I hired a so called "Web design expert" on Upwork and what a complete waste of time and money this was. The freelancer did not deliver the job as per the work agreement in any way. The website that be built for me was nothing like I requested it was just a horrible job in every aspect.
The website design was nothing like I requested in the detailed contract provided, some pages had code errors showing when loading and the images he used were all fuzzy and out of shape on most pages.
Even though I asked for the website to be 100% mobile compatible when I tested the site it did not work correctly on smartphones.
He requested the payment milestone to be released, I said no you have not provided me the agreed upon work. He said he had given me what I requested which was complete BS.
The freelancer said he would not redo the website and it had no problems. I opened a dispute but this is where is goes from bad to a complete con for buyers on Upwork.
Upwork said they would not make a judgement on the quality of the website he built. Even though I spent hours detailing all the obvious problems to Upwork they said I had to work it out with him, "Upwork" said they would not get involved in the dispute and they would not refund my money. Why even have a dispute process in the first place if they won't help buyers when things for wrong!
As long as the freelancer says the work is "just fine" that's it, you have lost all your money in any disputes.
Upwork said it was all my fault if I did not check the freelancer properly before entering into a contract with him, the support quoted me their terms and conditions that cover everything in their favour, they will not accept responsibility for anything that goes wrong.
The quality of the work that I received did not match the posted resume on Upwork so I think he was just a complete fraud about his stated profile and experience. Don't take the profiles on Upwork as actually true or honest in any way.
I lost all my money on this job with no support from Upwork, anyway I hope my review informs enough people to stay away from Upwork.
It does not matter if you are getting a website built or getting anything else done on Upwork the dispute process is a sham, the terms and conditions cover them 100% when problems arise and you will just get nowhere with them.
PS. I did get my website built successfully with a local company that had an actual "shop front" with a real qualified "Web design expert".
Many freelancers that are operating on Upwork are not being very truthful when it comes to their profiles and work experiences posted. They are using fake profiles and fake information about their work skills and abilities.
Upwork don't seem to care less about all the deceptive and false information on the profiles of their freelancers. Profiles posted are not being audited for accuracy by Upwork.
The freelancer you hire may not really be honest about their skills, when you complain to Upwork about the poor work performed or a job that is not complete they just don't care, in fact Upwork will not even make a decision in any dispute. It's up to the customer to work it out with the freelancer so you will end up losing your your money.
When things go bad on a job Upworks terms and conditions covers all scenarios for the themselves very well.
Don't Waste Your Time and Money on Upwork, it seems UpWork is the new chosen platform for those Nigerian scammers to operate from.
I got scammed thousands of dollars on Upwork when I spent thousands on Upwork for a freelancer who claimed he could deliver my project as described in the project description with detailed deliverables.
Upwork confirmed that I was scammed, did nothing to help me dispute the charges and the freelancer is still active on Upwork scamming other clients.
Read the title from personal experience, ineffective security and communication is difficult. Do not do business with these clowns
How does this company stay in business? Oh that's right they charge potential workers for applying for jobs. Over and over and over! What a scam they got going on over there. I am designer with over 25 years of experience and have had a fulltime job in the business for all of this time. I answered over 100 ads and all I got was one lady that just kept badgering me with questions about her $#*!ty job for 2 whole months. I finally just closed down my account and moved on! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME! No money to be made here. Just cheapies looking to get their jobs done for free!
They are fine and you set your own fees. If they like you they will give you work sometimes. I get plenty of work and it is good supplemental income for a professor. The have some competition now but are still okay. Better than some scam sites like Writerbay.
Very Very Very Bad and True Horror for Honest Freelancers.
They never support their Freelancers and Providers and It seems they are Cheating their Freelancers themself.
Truly Not Recomeneded!
I am a student of IT, and mostly my searches are related to online earning platforms. This site is great for students who want to work for other people from all over the world and share their talent globally.
I hired a freelancer that billed over $4K and then ghosted me. Dispute went to mediation per Upwork policy but nothing came of it because the freelancer choose not to participate (I think he got kicked off the platform although I am not sure). Bottom line, I have no deliverable, am out of $4K, and the mediation process yielded nothing. Very disappointing.
It inspires to work for free and beg clients to have them to provide 100% Ratings. Its really worst. And Rs. 20 to Rs. 65. And taking 20 % commission and Agency Plan for adding a team mate $20 per month. For submitting a job. Its crazy!
Upwork fails to close contracts after a period of inactivity. If you forget to end a contract, then this contract can stay open indefinitely, which can result in what happened in my case. A freelancer fraudulently logged hours for a contract that was open and inactive for over a year. Since Upwork automatically withdraws from clients checking accounts, I was stuck paying for the fraudulent hours. I was scammed out of $700.00. Upwork is as much to blame as the fraudulent freelancer. They should have had safeguards in place to automatically freeze, close, or end contracts after a period of inactivity. All I got from Upwork was an apology and $100.00 credit. Moral of this story... keenly monitor your contracts and always close them because Upwork is riddled with fraudulent freelancers.
Got scam twice using their service. They have a bunch of scam artist on this site. When my credit cards files a dispute with UpWorks, up works send them a report with everythin missing. They omitted everything left out important details. Basicly lied. I switch over to fiverr.com
My account was suspended yesterday after a verification call. The only reason I see is that I was unshaved and thus looked slightly different from profile photo. I answered every their question but nevertheless they suspended my profile. Just for being unshaved.
The worst thing is that I can't withdraw money I earned. Upwork, you are fu. Ing thieves!
Strongly recommend to keep away from this scam service
It's okay. There is a high volume of leads, but in my experience, most of those leads are not very good. I found few decent gigs to apply for, and declined most of the offers I received. Common reasons I had for either declining or not applying were: a) pay far below industry standard, b) client misunderstanding freelancer/vendor responsibilities (e.g. Conflating PR, marketing and sales), c) unethical requests (e.g. Writing product/service reviews for pay), d) requests that were so vague it would have been difficult to measure "success." I eventually worked with some very nice clients, but they had little to no experience working with freelancers, and I had to do a lot of hand-holding. Let's face it: Established companies and experienced freelancers typically find each other via word of mouth and do not need platforms like UpWork or its competitors. I'd say UpWork is okay for picking up an occasional gig, but the volume of subpar clients and the 20% cut (!) the platform takes from vendor payouts should discourage regular use unless you're just barely starting out.
I started an hourly contract with Prism capital sf via Upwork the client from the start wasn't professional wanted me to build her model with no measurements whatsoever. She claimed that she lost all the measurements. I had to use her hand sketch plan as reference and than she send me a site plan that is 19 INCHS by 23 INCHS yes you heard it right. I even double checked with the her and she informed me that what I have to use. On the due date for the first draft when the client received the work went a head and ended the contract without paying for any of the hrs I spend on her project. I contacted her vis Upwork massage's and basically just ignored me. I reached to her via email as Upwork informed me I should do and she blocked me after she told me that she did NOT hire me which is not true. Its insane that Upwork cant do anything about that the same as if you work with no contract, the same as if you work outside the platform. So why you charge us 20% for. When you even can NOT protract us from people with zero professionalism and zero work ethic, who basically want us to work for free.
If you are a freelancer run for your life they collect very sensitive info that no other competitive site does that. Also the take hug % of your pay and you HAVE to pay to apply for jobs that's 99% you may not get.
They have charging heavy commissions on the projects. Even they suspend account so frequently and their every customer support member come up with different reasons. Also there are some of the clients who give work to new ID's after submission of work they reports the freelancer ID and results in blocking freelancer ID and all the amount get reversed into the client as per Upwork latest rules
I'm just fed up with their services.
I am going to describe about only true.
I have created my private upwork.com freelancer account in September.
Current I am using Freelancer.com now.
And I have invited my client to the upwork.com and I have worked client some project.
When I have finished first project, upwork team required Video verification(after upload the ID Card) and I have passed succussfully.
However there was the problem when I have got second project and started.
Some support member(Jeric Bambi Gaerlan) made my account as suspend.
After that Upwork support team member(Mike) asked again to upload my ID card and bank document.
Of course, This was not strange, In Freelancer.com aslo asked verification document(ID card and bank document and Passed and are using this).
As the result, I h ave uploaded the ID card and bank document, even this is private.
It also passed correctly, but some other support member(Lizzie B) made my account again as suspend.
So, I have sent the message to the suppor team about the reason.
Finally other support team member(Maya) sent message like this
"We've reviewed all of the information you provided, but will not be reinstating your account. The decision is final and your account is permanently deactivated. I understand this is not the outcome you were hoping for.
Please know we are unlikely to respond to further correspondence regarding this matter."
How can I understand about this?
I am very angry about this site support team member's working style.
I think it is easy to use Freelancer.com than upwork.com
Refund my client again From upwork.com
I am apparently one of many who also received an email stating that my UpWork account would be closed without notice. It happened around 2 months after my father died. I had spent 1 whole month helping my mother with insurances and lawyers and after that I was sick for 5 weeks, was barely able to work but I did the minimum which entailed my own office work so I wasn't on UpWork.
I was shocked when I received the email. Weeks later I checked to see if I had been paid at the end of the quarter and to my disbelief, UpWork had not sent me the money owed.
This is unforgivable.
Sincerely,
Maria Robichaud
I very happy with online job there is very good opportunity for woman. "Make sure your worst enemy doesn't live between your two ears...
This review and message is for the people sitting on hot chair of Upwork's payroll:
'YOU', people being placed at the top most position, would treat this mail / message like any other junk mail and be if ignored by. But still would be taking out my frustration and pass on this message to you.
As per what happened recently, we are all incapable of earnings, who received the irregularities in our account. We landed up to your site of upwork in a hope that we might get into a life changing deal one day.
We also know, these things come up from the higher management to reduce number of people ( freelancer -who are of no use to your company).
You are throwing us out of your system like we have committed serious crimes and are held responsible for imaginary fraud activities. It gives us a feeling like we don't belong to your cream layer and we are just the corner dirt lying on the road.
The day when I saw that my account is getting closed without prior intimation, it was like I was being punished for serious offence, and I did cross check too that did I really cross any line while searching job. But hey! It took me 3-4 days to accept it that I am not a valuable person on this Earth, not because I committed some fraud, but as not being a consistent earner.
I have purchased the connects, still half of it unused. Yes 12$ it is which I spent to buy connects to see your robotic mail chain that ' irregularities in your account', "cross check, and found hard core evidence against you, " ' we may not be able to reply to your message', ' once closed you would be kicked out of the system even when you are a genuine user.
I have earned around 30+ $ till date and spent 12$ to take your services to search job. This is how you build trust in the company? Are the job providers going to believe your commitment to provide same freelancer who are in project, whom they trust?
Being a multi-million or billion company doesn't mean you have the right to blame people for what they didn't do, it's the guts in which you say it right on the face that ' you are just tiny piece of electron in my universe and are not capable of earning till date', not that we are hard core criminals. Just such filthy feeling I got out of those robotic mail chain. It's being fooled even after paying for the services.
I asked for reimbursement of my payment for services, for which they reply the ticket is closed and give you feedback about upwork. So this mail is my feedback.
Current situation might be favoring you, but one day when clients trust break, you all would be standing behind us in this queue of jerks..
Answer: They are horrible. Every freelancer I've gotten from Upwork has cost me more to fix the small job they have done. There's absolutely no customer service! I would stay away
Answer: This is not the place to inquire.
Answer: No, just 20% of your job when we talk about fixed price, and same for hourly but after some week it's been 10%
Answer: Go to Settings › Contact Info › Click the Close my account link. If you meet the requirements, click the button to confirm that you want to close your account.
Answer: I am a customer and have had a really horrible experience. Upwork claims a 100% guarantee before you pay anything. That is not true. The process is actually quite horrible. You put money in escrow. You only get your money back after a bad contract if the freelancer agrees to release the money. If the freelancer refuses, you get a bargain offer to still pay them something but still you are paying for a bad job you can't use. Then, if you refuse to bargain over a bad job, you are told that it will cost you an additional $389 to arbitrate with a 3rd party affiliate that the customer (me), the freelancer (scammer) and Upwork (ripoff enabler) has to pay. I took it all the way to arbitration with the end result being that Upwork decided that I was just too uninformed to know their policy and that they would give me a one time only refund of my original amount. What they didn't tell me what that they just gave me a "credit" of my original amount and that was the end. So I am still out the original amount and can't get my money back. This sight is a ripoff. Plain and simple.
Answer: Because of their policy changes which are geared towards the client rather than the freelancer. They have dug their own grave with their policy changes of late.
Answer: Go to Get Paid on PC or Mobile, you will see 3 dots in front of your payment method, tap to select edit/remove to change them. Go to Billing Method on PC under Billing Section and tap three dots to change (edit/remove). Thanks
Answer: Be part and see, dont look at the sold mine reviews people, upwork can bush you to reach.
Answer: I agree with Sam. This place is a scam. They have bad reviews everywhere. Katrina is probably working for them!
