Buyer beware
June 6, 2016

Yes they find the cheaper hotel but they do it because they don't post all the extra fees associated with where you want to stay. They aren't the only website to practice business this way... I will never use them again. I will only get hotels directly from the hotel from now on.

Dear Victor,

Thank you for your message and we appreciate your feedback.

It is important to bear in mind that trivago's American (. Com) and Canadian (. Ca) platforms show prices per room per night before taxes and fees are included.

We have run several tests and this proves to be the most recognized and common way for both retail and online products to be displayed within North America. Therefore, we try to remain as localized as possible for our different users.

The majority of our European and other platforms display prices already including taxes and fees, as this is the norm in these countries.

What you can and should expect from trivago is that we will always strive for maximum transparency.

We hope that this clarifies things from our side.

Kind regards,
James Morrison

I was looking for one night accommodation in Rome, clicked on the Trivago site, selected the date as 22 September 2016 (out on the 23rd). A number of hotels came up so I selected the Romanico Palace and Trivago transferred me to another site called Hoteling. I liked the price so I filled out the details quickly as there is a clock pushing you along by counting down the seconds. All this time I thought the original date of 22nd September was still in effect as this was what I entered originally. However, unknown to me, because there isn't a clear invoice detailing dates and prices I bought the booking. Then up pops another window giving me a JULY date! Where did that come from?! I cancelled quickly hopefully it hadn't gone through but to no avail. I was stung! Hoteling won't refund the money which I believe I was wrongfully taken from me due to an error in their system. I asked Hoteling to just transfer the funds the to date that I want but they also refuse to do this. I now notice that there are a large number of bad reports about the conduct of Hoteling and from my very bad experience I advise everyone to avoid using Hoteling at all cost. I can't understand why Trivago uses this company. In my opinion Hoteling isn't a reputable company. Beware Hoteling.

We have been forced to cancel our vacation! Because they over booked our hotel and did not contact us to tell us until after we contacted then to ask why the hotel had no record of the reservation this happened less then 2 days before our check in date we could not find an equivalent hotel with openings so close to our arrival date. And their communication was horrible. Did not work with us hardly at all to fix it so we could have the same kind of experience we had planed for. This was a trip for my 9 yr old daughter's BIRTHDAY! So many reasons i can list why this is just poor business and a horrible experience for us.

Beware!
June 4, 2016

I learned that if I had stepped into the chosen hotel, my rate would be $22 cheaper than booking through Trivago. Now I find that Trivago booked me not only for last night in Tennessee but has also booked me for three days from now in New Mexico via Priceline! There is absolutely no way to get hold of Trivago and get it made right. Priceline says "Too bad, so sad" and hotel refers everything back to 'the third carrier'. The minor convenience now seems not worth the costs.

I used Trivago for the first itme to find a hotel in Columbia, Missouri. I purchased a room at Suburban Choice Hotel, a kitchenette for $55 a night! The room rate was fabulous and this is the best smelling hotel I have ever stayed in. The people are friendly and helpful and I will definitely stay in Suburban again and use Trivago again. This is a win-win!

I went to this site to book a hotel for 2 daysin fl. I booked a site and at the end they charged me a 40 dollar cleaning fee. I called back and said i wanted to cancell because of the extra 40 dollR cleaning fee. They told me if i spent 2 more dollars and i could get a hotel room with out paying a cleaning fee. So i paid more and had my room. Upon going there the hotel manager said if i came two hours eary i had to pay a 50 early fee, i said no ill go out to eat and wait till 3:00 pm. They called someone else and he said i could stay without the 50 dollar fee, BUT he said they were no longer honoring this company as they dont pay there bills. Then hetells us that we look tired so we could have a room but there was a 40 dollar cleaning fee.! Now they had Already charged my charge card when i first called so i could mot get my money back! The room was horrible! I took pictures! Springs out of chairs, bleach spits all over the carpet, table and bar chairs with holes and misding fabric all over! It was a room no one had used for months at best. Maybe 5 or 6 cars in the entire place. What a rip off and over charged from this company! L6Nf

Dump
May 17, 2016

Stayed in a Studio 6 Charlotte Airport #6006 3420 Queen City Dr Charlotte NC. Only pet friendly hotel we could find for a one night stay. The first thing I checked with the mattress and it appeared to be new sheets were really white. However as the evening approached the room started to smell... the bedspread I discovered was filthy... carpet in halls disgusting... nothing worked. No hot water in bathroom sink... and we woke up to roaches on the wall. And they charged me a $25 nonrefundable pet deposit? I wouldn't let my Chihuahua's feet touch their filthy floors. First time I used Trivago... and the last time.

Way to go
May 17, 2016

We were planning a getaway for us and our children. My husband just got home after being gone for many months with the military. We used trivago to find our hotel and they booked through Expedia. However, when getting to the hotel we were told we couldn't use our military discount, nor earn our points for staying at the Holiday Inn. We use this hotel often and travel a lot. The hotel stay was the same price as if we were to book it ourselves. Except for the fact we could have gotten our military discount and gained our points had we not used Trivago/ Expedia. So, in essence we spent more then we would have if we just done it all ourselves. We will never use this again nor recommend our friends too. We are large community of military wives and families too. So, thank you for reading this and if you're military book it yourself.

I agree with previous reviewers, Trivago's vetting of their site's suppliers is inept at best and likely they are a front and just a way to add a layer of seperation between them and their cohorts, while adding a false sense of legitimacy, for these scam Euro/Russian booking sites.

I have had personal dealings with both Trivago and their linked supplier Hoteling.com. When searching on Trivago you'll find all the similar availablities and pricing found on other, legitimate, booking sites such as Expedia, Priceline and Travelocity but you will also see availability at hotels that had no availability on the other sites and/or prices 10-20% less than these other sites offered by Hoteling.com and the like. Thinking you've stumbled upon a deal you'll be tempted to roll the dice and book through one of these sites you've likely never heard of, hoping you'll be just fine.

If you decided to check out reviews before booking, good for you. You've been warned...

Dear Dan,

Although we appreciate you taking the time to leave a review we find that quite a few of your statements are factually incorrect.

You mentioned that you had 'dealings' with trivago. You contacted us on Oct 17th last year regarding a booking issue with Hoteling.com. We responded seeking more information in order to assist you but you did not respond unfortunately. You did mention at the time that your issue was resolved with Hoteling and that you had been refunded. It seems as though your review here (several months later) is based on other peoples experiences more so than yours which is a shame and very unfair.

As a hotel search and not a booking site, trivago is not involved in the booking process between the user, the online travel agent and the hotel, and therefore cannot, in any way, claim financial responsibility for the transaction process between these parties.

Nevertheless, before displaying rates from a booking site on trivago, a background check on the company is always conducted to ensure that their customers have the opportunity find the deals offered on their website. This background check has been completed for all the booking sites listed on trivago.

Trivago does not display deals from any site that does not pass our initial integration check, or where there are any reports that the site is not reliable. As we endeavor to display all online hotel offers globally, we believe that we would be doing a disservice to our users if we were to ban a booking site. None of the 250+ booking sites listed on trivago are exempt from booking issues, the 'legitimate' ones you have mentioned included.

What you can and should expect from trivago is that we will always strive for maximum transparency. Our main purpose is to help users find their ideal hotel. We function as a portal for hotels to advertise themselves, as well as a meta-search for booking sites to display their rates and increase the traffic to their companies.

Our main goal is to help people find that particular ideal hotel to fit their needs, then they can book it however they choose.

Kind regards,
Trivago user support.

Tried to book a hotel same night. Didn't notice that default dates were more than a week out!
No way to get a refund.
Not happy!

Trivago subsequently contacted me and kindly offered to pay the difference.
I suspect that the default dates are chosen by looking for the cheapest rates within a few weeks. Just be sure you check the dates before searching or booking!

Dear trivago users,

We have been in touch with Finn directly and are in the process of resolving his booking issue in his favor and to his satisfaction.

In terms of the default date, once you enter your desired location or hotel into the search bar on trivago a calendar will drop down to enter your check in and check out dates. Finn claims in his case this did not happen and we of course will take him at his word. But of course we would expect our users to choose their preferred dates prior to confirming any booking. We also advise our users to double check that all information matches on the booking site after they have been directed there from trivago.

Kind regards,
Trivago user support.

Cautionary Tale
March 22, 2016

If you are a Canadian and are using Trivago.ca. Don't assume the booking site is in Canada. I booked a hotel in Canada for a Canadian hotel through what I thought was the hotel's own website. It was, however, a U.S. booking company and the charges on my Visa were in USD. I cancelled the trip next day, after realizing what had happened, The following day a refund appeared on my Visa but was 10% less than the amount I was charged the day before. Fluctuating currencies and buying and selling in USD accounted for the difference according to the booking company. So once again YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION TO THE CURRENCY YOU ARE BEING CHARGED IN. I didn't notice the USD charges until I saw my Visa on line and looked at the booking summary.

Booked a hotel stay through Trivago with Otel.com. Otel immediately took our money and sent a confirmation of booking email. The hotel we chose to stay at is 45 minutes away from us in Calif. We later learned Otel.com is in Istanbul Turkey. We called the hotel the next day to double check our reservation and they have no record of the reservation, they have never heard of Otel and they are booked full on the date of our reservation. I have requested a resolution from Otel with no response. Checked Otel's reviews and they are the worst! Several stories like ours of the site taking their money and issuing a false confirmation. Even though Trivago is not responsible for the actions of the sites they post on their website, it seems to us that they are doing a horrible job of vetting these sites before including them in their list of sites.

We have been in contact with Tom and with Otel.com on his behalf. His booking issues are now resolved and we are glad that we were able to mediate in order for that to happen.

What you can and should expect from trivago is that we will always strive for maximum transparency. Therefore we recommend that our users take further steps to review the booking site’s rating score. All rating scores are prominently displayed next to the logo of each booking site on trivago and are continuously reviewed by fellow trivago users.

Perfect at the Pier
February 10, 2016

If you are looking for the old hotel, character, ambiance, sound of the sea, view of the sea, smell of the sea, fantastic food, great staff - then this is it. Ratty, tatty and wonderful, not modern, get that anywhere, but has clean, comfy beds, breakfast and view from the veranda of this lovely place. Kids catered for outside everyone eats great food on great service. The fact that the three restaurants are constantly full tells it all. After 20 years I wanted the smell, sound and feel of the sea again and got it in spades. Keep it up, I will be back.

Pointless
February 2, 2016

I was really excited to use this site. I booked a hotel in Banff for a weekend. The hotel advertises their rate as $500 on special for $99.00. Upon arrival the hotel was more like a hostel, the lights in the room didn't work and they had placed us in a queen room rather than two double beds. It didn't end there! They were "sold out" of rooms with 2 double beds AND the refused to refund our 2 night stay. Booking.com was unable to do anything about it! Nor was Trivago. There is really no point in a site to help you find deals if they allow business to lie about their rates.
