I peruse TireRack.com to see what's new and see the pictures and details of tires. I won't buy tires with shallow tread depth or shoulders that are closed off. Tire Rack does a great job of making that information easily accessible.
When I see tires having sales or rebates that fit my needs, I will purchase them sometimes in advance of when I actually need them. Last November, I had to immediately replace the tires on my brand new Chevrolet Trax because there was only 9/32 tread depth and the first light snow showed their weakness. I was able to acquire a Cooper all-season with a severe weather rating, good tread depth and 2 different discounts. Now, my car-like wagon looks like the SUV it pretends to be with the aggressively styled trail tires.
