Hello to all,
I'm actually a service provider who utilizes "Thumbtack" for the majority of my business. I would like to point out that there are always scammers out there trying to take advantage of people, and this is true on both sides of the fence. I've bid on jobs only to show up and find 5 times the amount of work described in the request, I've also had a customer scam me out of close to $1800 on a minor home improvement issue.
However, after all that being said, I have no one to blame but myself. I didn't get ANYTHING in writing, it was all verbal/hand-shake...
1.) Contracts are but ONE way to avoid scammers
2.) ALWAYS check to see if they are Licensed, Bonded and Insured!
3.) Take a look at the companies profile, read it... How many grammatical errors are there? How many people have hired them? How many reviews? Are the reviews good or bad? What is the ratio of Hired/Reviewed? Does the profile have photos? Does the company have a website? Does the website have photos?
These are just steps one might take to make sure that who you hire are who they claim to be.
Thank you very much for your time!
I have been trying for 7 MONTHS to get Grout Magic to come repair a grout cleaning job they did in my home. ( I've been told the repair would take about 20 minutes.) I can not get then to return my phone calls, texts, or emails. They guarantee their work. Yeah right, guarantee to frustrate the homeowner is all. Would not use them again! (This review is not about Thumbtack, I hope to use Thumbtack to assist in reviewing this company)
All Thumbtack ppl care is our $$$ for the fake requests generated by their own team. Who in his right mind would send a request for a fitness session for next month at 4am in the morning. And I keep receiving 5-6 suspiciously similar requests for services every hour. They all look the same and all the customers' names on these requests are more than weird (Rotonda E. Or Baldetta S. Or Reuana M. Or Alsiano D. Etc.) 100% SCAM!
Bill with key painting came out gave us a quote on our exterior we accepted and within no time the crew of Key painting was on the job and they performed the job in good workmenship manner, we've already hired them again for our interior and the team at Key painting are doing a great job, we would definitely refer them to friends and family. Bill has been a great help picking out paint colors and accent colors for our family, great rooms he also performed a mold abatement job at our summer home in Alexander bay New York, it's been a wonderful experience working with Bill. Julia R.
They have done two separate huge tree trimming jobs for me recently.
I will definitely hire them again. I am very happy with the results.
Thumbtack should screen skilled tradesmen (HVAC /Plumbers) - I have an employee who is advertising on thumbtack who has been driving my company truck and doing work. Who would do business with someone like that.Do not be confused, he is not AOK.
Hi Peter,
I’m so sorry that this has happened. It’s definitely not something that Thumbtack stands behind. We have a great Marketplace Integrity here team that would love to talk to you about this. Please give us a call at (800) 343-1710 at your earliest convenience.
We look forward to speaking to you!
I wish i could give them a half of star Thumbtack is a made up company by 4 individuals they wanna be like home advisors they sell you leads and as a past contractor they i had a bad experience with them "CONTRACTORS BEWARE" this company gets into your personal business if you have a issue with one of there lead customers and if you don't resolve the issue there way they will suspend your account they make up rules as they go along and now there threatening to charge your credit card if you don't finish a job stay away you been warned
Very young, but with lot of experience, she made a great job, you will not regret hiring her.
Elder Craig Fields did an outstanding job for me and my wife wedding and for a very responsible rate
Courtney Masonry of Lancaster built me a brick chimney and hearth to my specifications. It turned out beautiful! Mr. Courtney gave a free detailed estimate and was a true proessional in every sense of the word. I would recommend him to any and all.
They did a professional job, and they bring their own tools, free estimate.
I used Arch City Tree Care last week. They beat every other bid I had before them. They did a really good job at my house. It was a giant oak tree. They were a little bit cheaper, plus they did a fabulous job. A great clean up. They also give me a better price on grinding out the Stump. I had a giant oak tree that they removed. The tree was over my house, my UE line, my swimming pool, and Also my deck. They even left me some firewood, cut up and stacked for me. They really worked hard. They where polite, and curdious. They also got the pile of limbs that had fallen out of my tree over the years(that I had stacked in the back) for free. In the future I will only call Arch City Tree Care. I've used other companies in the past. But not ever again. I was really impressed with their work, politeness, and respect for their own work. I truly fought that you will be disappointed in hiring Arch City Tree Care.
I had a 75 inch TV mounted on the wall also I had a laundry room door that was broken and repaired by blessed by the best and it looks better then it did when I moved in my home. I also had pictures hang all through the house and small repairs done to my bathrooms on a scale of 1 to 10 I give them 11 I will recommend this company to everyone
I had a VERY large move the other day. I hired Movers Connections after getting a Thumbtack account and hiring them after they sent me a quote. We, (my sister and I) have very large and old heavy antique furniture. We were moving from a 3 bedroom house to a 2 bedroom townhome. She wanted to take EVERYTHING! And the three guys from Movers Connections did just that! On top of that, some things were not packed and it was chaotic and frustrating for us and doubly so for the movers. When Michael, Julio and Edwin showed up to move us I was doubtful they could actually do it but how wrong I was! Michael the team leader was a wiry little guy with no muscles showing. Julio is 57, and Edwin looked like he still should be in school chasing the girls! These guys were astonishing! The move took about 10 hours to tell you how much stuff there was. They had stairs to climb with the heaviest furniture, a piano and couches, chairs loveseats and boxes, so many boxes! These guys deserve a rating of 10 STARS! Additionally, they had closed the contract because they thought they would be finished but ended up having to stay about 4 additional hours. Michael told me his boss said we needed to go back on the clock and I was a little huffy about that. At a two hour minimum for $95.00 an hour was getting to be too steep. James, the big boss said he would cut us some slack and allow me to pay for just one hour. I wasn't happy but i said OK. In about another hour and with still more furniture to unpack, Michael came to me and said the deal with squashed! They were not charging me another dime! I couldn't have been happier of course! And they still were not finished! And, they had a small move after that and I believe it was going on 8 or 9pm! Whenever you need a big move, call Movers Connections! You will not regret hiring these guys I promise you! Clean, neat, professional and they really care about how your furniture is treated. They were careful not to break anything at all and spent a few hours just wrapping and securing the furniture, removing the weights from the clock, tying down furniture so it didn't slide, etc... Hire Movers Connections!
Entire roof, huge pool deck all around, back deck, front porch, entire roof on business, redone bathroom and shower, redone kitchen counters! Excellent work
Paula Rosch is a conscientious and thorough planne and installer. She turned my front yard from a wasteland where dust collected in summer and water pooled in winter to a lovely European style courtyard. I have more work to do in my backyard next spring and summer; you can bet I am contracting Garden Planning Services to do the job.
I've gotten 4 clients north of $500 each (some well north) and have another interview next week. One of these clients has returned for more work, two of these other businesses will have more work in the future. I've spent $60-$100 in credits. I am very happy with the service. I hired Valerie and Jerry from Tender Deep Cleaning Service to clean my apartment a couple of days ago. I am glad to say that they did a wonderful job cleaning my medium sized apartment! First off, my carpet was horrendous before they came to clean it. I knew that it was filthy before I even moved into the place however, I didn't know it doesn't look so bad until I saw how fresh/new it looked after they cleaned it. I don't know what they did but honestly they worked a miracle on my grey carpet. I was finally able to see that my carpet actually has a nice shade to it. It's just been dirty this whole time. I also had bedbugs in my master bedroom, however after they steamed the carpet in there I have not had one single bedbug bite. The second area they cleaned was my bathroom and I wanted special emphasis placed on the tile in my tub and the floor due to the mold and mildew on both areas. After they finished doing whatever it is they do, my tub tile no longer had that mildew in the cracks. Also I found out that my tub tile is actually a pretty pink color and not a rusty red. Also, the floor no longer looked muddy and the whole bathroom smelled way better than when I first moved into my apartment. They also cleaned the walls above my tub area which had some kind of green fungus on them and that disappeared as well after they were done. I really just want to compliment them on the quality of their work and the kindness they exhibit in their attitudes. I live in a poor area and no one else would come clean for me, however Mrs. Valerie and her husband were willing to come clean my apartment and I thank them very much! Thank you again and when I can afford their service again I will be hiring them to come clean.
Paying nearly $7 for each property management lead is rather expensive, especially when it's obvious that some of the requests for proposals are fake or from competitors shopping the competition, but I was able to land my firm a new client thanks to Thumbtack. This client did not make contact in any of the other standard lead generation platforms, so I'm glad I had an account with Thumbtack. The only caveat I have is that there is no way to tell who is sending the request, and you are not provided any contact information to a real person directly after paying for the lead. That means you can spend a lot of money on unverifiable leads, and that makes me somewhat uncomfortable. If I had not signed a new client in the time frame that I did, I would probably have stopped using Thumbtack, simply because of the uncertainty of authenticity. I also wish that they would add property management to the list of services that a user can browse.

We needed the entire exterior of our house painted. Travis came out immediately to give us a quote. He was very knowledgeable, and professional and gave us a very thorough scope of work, which was completed exactly as he said it would be. Brad and Brandon did the painting in a 2 day period. They were fantastic, professional, hard working young men. Their work was amazing and our house looks BEAUTIFUL! We couldn't be happier. We highly recommend Premier Painting, and will definitely use them in the future.

Answer: Thumbtack does not generate fake requests. When our professionals come to Thumbtack to meet new customers, we know how important it is to receive requests that can help them expand their clientele. We have a lot of customers that come to Thumbtack and hire professionals to help them complete their personal projects. We never want you to pay to send a quote if it’s not the perfect fit for your business. This is why you can view the details of each request before you send a quote and introduce yourself to the customer. James - I’m so sorry that the concerns you’ve brought to our attention haven’t been responded to in an appropriate amount of time, this is never our intention. It's important to us to obsess about answering our customers and professionals questions and concerns within a timely manner. We are a real company that can always be improving. You can read more about our company in reputable sources such as Forbes and the New York Times. If anyone has specific concerns about certain requests you’re receiving, we’d be happy to review them and see how we can help. Feel free to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we have an amazing support team that is just waiting to talk to you.
Answer: Hi Kay, I’d be happy to answer your questions. When we initially started Thumbtack in 2009, we tried multiple business models. This included a commission based model, but there were some concerns. When professionals didn’t pay for each quote they sent out, there was nothing to stop pros from quoting as much as possible, regardless of if they were the right fit for the job. Paying for each quote encourages better quality quotes and creates a much better experience for customers. Like you mentioned, it’s important for us to get customers to try our site and continue to hire professionals. In the end, pros are paying to promote and advertise themselves to customers that are already actively looking for that particular service. S. G has an amazing point, and Thumbtack is a great introduction site. There’s a lot of potential to expand your clientele, but sometimes it takes some tweaking to your profile and quotes to increase your response rate. The goal is to create a connection through your profile and quote message, and we’re here to help you do this. It’s kind of like sending the customer a virtual portfolio of your experience, achievements, and reviews. I do want to clarify that Thumbtack does not create fake requests, and it goes against everything we value as a company. While Thumbtack may not be the perfect fit for every business, we strongly believe that we can help connect businesses with new customers and foster growth. If you’d like to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we’d love to give you more personalized help or answer any other concerns you may have.
Answer: We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service. Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network. We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!
Answer: The reason you had a lull in leads we because thumbtack had a manual action penalty levied against them. If you are not sure what that is you should google search it. The letter you received from Thumbtack regarding this was (as usual) not fully truthful. The letter does not detail the slimy tactics thumbtack used ti enhance google rankings in organic search returns. Do yourself a favor and search this phrase "thumbtack manual action penalty"
Answer: With our recent changes, you're only charged when a customer responds to your quote with interest in working with you. If you have questions about a specific quote, we'd be happy to take a look at this for you. Just send us a message on Facebook with your email address and the customer's name.
Answer: We want to make sure you get the most out of our site and see a return on the investment you've made with us. Please give us a call at (800) 948-2034 when you have time so we can go over your concerns with us.
