Like many others, we have been Pros for years and it's sad to see this company had to turn to scamming their pros and stealing their money. Read all the other reviews and stay far away from this company!

Be sure to file complaints with your state's attorney general and with the State of California Dept of Justice. You can also dispute the credit cards with your bank.

Thumbtack just said "hold my beer" to United Airlines and showed me customer service can actually get worse. My experience with them was actually so unimpressive, it was actually impressive.

Just $75 for one quote on the customer who I cannot even reach. Apparently, Thumbtack only shows half of your quote to the customer and then the customer has to magically figure out to click on the text of your quote to expend to read your full message. And hey btw if you approx price is not in the first 2 sentences of the quote there is 99.9% chance your customer will have no idea how much you charge and well when you tell him you'll never be able to reach him again... And btw "amazing" customer support totally admitted it was their fault and did absolutely nothing! Never again...

Luckily I only got charged four times by Thumbtack. Only one out of four customers paid the quoted amount, and it wasn't through Thumbtack, because Thumbtack doesn't have an option for Pros in computer repair to collect the quoted amount. Seriously? Yes, it's no joke. So they will only charges for the potential new customer, but won't get you paid. Isn't that wonderful?
I'm too small to react. Hope someone has the money and power to sue this company. How can you charge the pros, but not develop a way for the pro's collect the payment when the project is finished. I find it unbelievable and helpless/hopeless.

Too many emails

Would be great if we could specify size of potential assignment. I'm currently flooded with requests gumming up my mailbox, most of them one or two pages, but will only take much larger scope of work.

Wow! What a mess!
Simply put... THIEVING LEECHES!
And i am almost certain, this "outfit" is pulling these "estimates" out of thin air!
One example- given a lead that has already been completed?
Sure everyone has their own choice's to make(when it comes to this "co")...
My advice, DON'T DO IT!
Your better off doing the "cold calling" on your own! That way you get ALL THE MONEY!
These are freeloading leeches! And nothing more!
And besides... THEY HAVE TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!
DO IT FOR YOURSELF!

Ive been a Thumbtack business customer for several years, been difficult to justify hanging on for that long. They have changed their business model since then and gotten worse and worse, and more expensive every time. $27+ to send someone your name and number to get in contact with you about helping them remodel their bathroom? Pay money to send quotes but then the "customer" never contacts you about anything? You will throw money away if you are a small business that uses this service. And when they send you a survey to voice your concerns, the survey page is broken, asking to please fill in all fields, and use only numbers, which I do, but it keeps rejecting... so Im voicing my complaints here. Not to mention, it makes no effort to slightly educate the customers on what they are looking for, so as a finish carpenter, Im getting requests for popcorn ceiling removal, and rotten window repair, and there is apparently no way to filter out these requests, as I have tried. There are alternatives to Thumbtack, try them first, this company will drive you crazy, waste your time and take your money.

I've used Thumbtack for over 4 years. The first 2-3 years things were great and I had no reason to contact support. But oh man, this year I contacted them because a reviewer left a 4 start review simply because she "wanted to stop receiving messages from Thumbtack". Now crazy thing is I was never even HIRED. I sent her my quote and 2 months later I get this 4-star review. It was then that I asked her why and she gave me that response. I called Thumbtack, chatted with Thumbtack. They specifically saw the message where she said "I just wanted Thumbtack to stop sending me messages". Their response, "We believe reviewers are allowed to leave reviews and not get them taken down, that could be a lawsuit". I was shocked. It felt like I was on a different planet. What kind of logic is that?

I contacted them earlier this week for a customer that put a incorrect zip code and popped up as "in my area". I wanted a refund for that quote. They gave me one, but proceeded to tell me I need to update my preferences to not get jobs like that. This guy could've lived in Madagascar and put my zip and it would've popped up in my feed. Zero empathy and zero ownership. Nothing is ever their fault. Worst customer support I've dealt with.

They changed their business model and did away with phone support. No appropriate category was available for my services and I was pigeon holed into a very broad category. Since the business model change I have had NO BUSINESS. I have deactivated my account.

Thumbtack is a scam for business owners. Quotes are free to send but if someone replies, even if they have not read all of Thumbtacks rules and regulations, or if someone has something misclassified, such as needing a printer, not a designer.

You are charged $20-35.00 for every 100.00 in a quote you sent, so something you charge $300.00, you get charged $75.00 if someone replies to your quote, NOT if someone hires you. (A lot of users looking for professionals, this service is free, they do not read the lengthy rules, then YOU as a registered pro are charged just for someone saying, I'll save your info and get back to you when I know what I need, or if someone needs a printer and not a designer not understanding the difference, you have to file a claim with customer service, and it isn't really refunded to you.

All of this is VERY unclear on their website. After lots of emails and customer service chats, I was told I would be refunded a couple mischarges. Then after more time talking to customer service, to find out they didnt mean I would be refunded the money to the money to the bank account from which it came, they indicated my money would be credited to my thumbtack account and told me in the fine print they do not refund money to bank accounts.

Next, I went to my account and removed my credit card, just wanting to use the money that was credited to my account, I then got a message saying I could not send quotes unless I had a credit card linked to my account. You know, Ill take the loss, so that I dont give you one more dime I work really hard for!

For 100.00 on Facebook, I can run ads for weeks, probably gaining at least 5-10 new customers for what they are charging. Hire a local designer/advertisement pro and get some real advertising for yourself!

I have since read many reviews from other areas of service, home contractors, hair stylist. Same issues. Home contractors look like they have it rough based on some of the bids change but the average proposal cost 500.00?!

Ill join a class action with anyone else that feels like this service is a scam! I'm also filing complaints with BBB and FCC is possible!

Scam

I had Pro account. They charge you when a potential client contacts you to ask a question, NOT when you are hired. Like $15 each client in my case. Worst customer service. Very difficult to get any help. Dealing with them I really felt that this company just want to take as much money they can and it is not important for them to provide their. Customers good experiences. Absolutely horrible.

Holy crap did this company get greedy. Been a pro for 2 years. THe quotes are now anywhere from 20 to $50. Prior to their new policy, i was paying $3.33 per quote. They tricked me by using a pre determined budget, something I set through a different service called "instant match". They used that budget for their new "pay per contact" billing method. I did not approve of this, they simply did it. Whatever you set your budget at, they will take the full amount, the charges are flagrant and arbitrary with no science to them. Apparently they simply take what your budget allows. You can also be charged for 30 days after you send a quote in the event that a customer just happens to contact you. So be very careful how many quotes you send out because at any point if somebody messages you, you will be charged. I'm told, they are working out the growing pains, in the meantime they are literally robbing people. Stay far away and deactivate your account!

I've been using thumbtack for a long while. And have gotten some great clients from it. But recently they changed their pay scale and its just a cash grab for A lesser product. They changed the face of it in their newest update (my assumption got bought out) and since then it has slowly gotten worse for their "pros" and more expensive for leads. In which they promoted to us that sending a quote was free. The part that they didnt tell you that if the person responds you get charged. Not for their service working but just for you using it. My highest bill was $53 in but i didnt actually have a conversation with a person. And i'm pretty sure it was a bot. Because i did not hear back from the person just got a initial "are you available for my date" then was charged for it. If the service gets better it may be something to use if they chance the pay scale but they also dont do refunds just credits to your account.

I joined Thumbtack as a pro in 2014 and built a successful business primarily through the site. It was affordable and convenient and I had full control of my bidding, my message and my costs.

Their new system where I am charged a huge increase in fee when a "lead" contacts me (even for a simple question) is a rip-off. I cannot even personalize my quote to respond to requests that I choose to bid. I know how to market my business and have been successful and profitable. I am a "TopPro" for years with many 5 star ratings and hired many times.

My mistake was in focusing almost exclusively on Thumbtack. Now I'm starting over with other platforms that are more affordable.

Thumbtack was a good platform. Now it is terrible. I know that they have to be profitable. So do I.

This past 2 weeks I paid about $500 to thumbtack and got only one real job out of them. All the other leads seam fake because for one reason or the other the customers ask one question, thumbtack charges and then nobody gets back to you. I have call thumbtack customer service and they don't want to give me no refunds. Im in the painting business and they charged me $50 because someone made an on-site quote request and after 2 hours they cancelled. I think they have someone write fake requests just so they can charge the pros.

Worked with Thumbtack clients as a tax pro since 2015 and it has become a questionable place to do business. This is what happened to me. Today it cost me $36.95 for one person on Thumbtack to ask me "Do u s till eorl for H&R". This is highway robbery especially since I had been paying $13.95 for someone on Thumbtack to ask me a question. I was never notified beforehand that the price was being raised. No wonder so many pros have negative comments/are leaving the site.
