I contacted Thumbtack early Friday morning. I received 5 quotes back within 10 minutes. One of those who made contact was David Spinks, who indicated he would be available later around noon, following a previous appointment. We agreed on that time. He arrived on time, was courteous, professional, and thorough. He completed the job quickly. His quoted price was firm. I would definitely hire him again when and if he need arises.
I'm also a Pro on Thumbtack been with them going on six years. When I first started pricing was reasonable. They would sell you a pack of credits and show how many you need to send a estimate. Credits 1.67 each. Then they went on and change from credits to dollars they would even show you how many you need. Estimate 12 credits = 20.04. They don't do that any more. When they change to what their doing know, I called to get a ball park pricing. The person I spoke with could not give me a figure. He said it all depends on the job size. Makes no since. And still no figure. I sent a estimate that use to be 20.04 I just checked my payment 75.00 dollars. That is F**K UP Talk about Price Gouging Thumbtack is getting away with it.
Thumbtack started charging 5 to 10 times the former price. And they are blind charges they spring up all the sudden after you place a bid. I no longer place bids because I cant afford it
I too have been on thumbtack for three years. The first year was great. Fees were reasonable. The next year they tripled their fees. The third year the fees were unbelievable and now with this new thing they are doing, I would not benefit at all. They pretty muchwant 60% and perhaps that percentage is too low. I charge $85 for a simple tax return, but the lead at this point costed $44 with this new budget scam they are doing.
As a pro, this is the absolute worst lead company on the market! It hasn't happened yet but I'm sure this is borderline illegal! And sooner or later someone is going to make a class action lawsuit against this company and as a pro I'm glad that I will be a part of it! They're taking money out of my account for several months now they cannot explain to me why the money being taken out, I feel like most of the customers they have on their website or fake or generated by some tags to steal money from their Pros! As a licensed contractor I would like to say from me and the rest of the license contractors on Thumbtack website f**k you Thumbtack!
The prices have jumped twice in about the last 2 years, and now there is not even a set price for specific leads!
The wait time for phone support has also increased. It used to be under a minute. Now it can be 5-10 minutes.
My worst complain about Thumbtack.com in the 7 yrs I have used their service is that they charge the customer NOTHING! All the expense, and risk, is borne by the vendor. Why? Just charge the customer a small amount ($2-$5). You don't respect something you don't pay for.
This company has the dumbest business model ever! They charge you arbitrary amounts of money when a lead makes contact - even if the 'lead' says not interested. Nobody at Thumbtack customer service could explain the random charges on my account. They make money even if you make nothing. Stay far, far away from this bizarre scam.
Thumbtack has been charging my debit card for quotes I'm not sending stealing my money. There quality of customer are horrible they deal with low quality. I'm a licensed contractor and the pricing Thumbtack customer expect are horrific thumb tack was OK until the unauthorized charges its bad enough they don't screen there customer the steal ya money to stay away tradesmen run go to home advisor if you wanna get $#*!ed
Thumbtack will charge you for everything even if customer is not serious, just wanting free work, basically if they respond for any reason even if its $#*! off they will charge you $40 bucks with no refunds.
I would highly recommend putting money elsewhere - either advertisement or improving tools you already have instead of giving thumbtack money. It cost me $30 to simply have someone ask me a question. I look at the insights to see that this customer spoke with SEVEN people to get some more "info" from other businesses. Which means that they made a couple hundred dollars off this one customer looking for business.
Thumbtack has lost me and a few others to their terrible platform. There are other companies (bark.com) that do the same thing for less money. Either way, I'll be spending money on advertisements and word-of-mouth to get my business out there.
Each time I complain about them, they reverse my complaint against me instead. They twist the story so they look good and THEIR CUSTOMER looks bad. What the hell is up with these people that they cannot take responsibility and apologize for what they do wrong? They are the worst bunch of jerks I have ever known. EVERYTHING (OUR WORKS) they offer, they set their pricing FOR US so we need to TAKE THEIR pricing regardless. They are the worst rip-off I have ever seen. They call all of us "beginners" but everyone has been working more than 10 years and this Thumbtack is MISSING their own intelligence. This year is my 9th complaint and they have NEVER resolved a single problem. They only twist it against the customer, again and again and again...
I've been a pro vendor on Thumbtack (TT) for over 3 years, "Top Pro" for two of them. They have gone from helpful and reasonable to useless and greedy in the past year. They charged me $38.00 for a contact offering a $200 job. That's a 40% commission! And the job was cancelled. They would not give me even a partial refund after 3 phone calls.
Stay away -- they only want your money.
1-THEY KEEP REPORTING TO ME CONTACTS THAT ARE NON EXISTANT.
2-DESPITE MY CONTINUED INQUIRY ABOUT LACK OF CONTACT OR THEIR ERRONEOUS REPORTING, NO ONE FROM TT CALLS ME BACK OR RESPONDS WITH ANYTHING OTHER THAT AUTOMATED UNMEANINGFUL ROBO-RESPONSE
I tried out Thumbtack for a few months. I would send quotes and then get charged for people just asking me simple questions. Didnt even get the job yet. Its ridiculous! Happened almost every time. Only time I actually made a profit was with a repeat customer. Its not worth it. Dont waste your time or money.
I'm recently a pro on this website... after reading all other reviews, this is exactly what I was going thru until I realized NOT to keep giving them hard earned money. They control most of the leads. I'll pass on about 5 leads just to see what's going on and they'll put 5 requests right back into my account. Don't get me wrong, some of these are legit. Although most of them are controlled to generate more money for thumbtack. I paid on Monday my weekly balance, only to get charge a day later for so called customers who are not real and "responding". Really on the verge of getting my business off the ground and every dollar counts. So when you try to explain that most of these guys dosent even have intention on hiring ANYONE... So it's not just me I'm complaining about, they only respond so that the pro can get charged. I'm learning now that this can be a total rip off...
Look closely at the "leads" -- the names are ridiculous, 99% of the leads are people who don't have facebook or LinkedIn profiles. Coincidence? If an executive named "Simon Z from Maui" is looking to hire a photographer via Thumbtack, don't you think chances are pretty good that "Simon Z" would have a profile SOMEWHERE on the internet? 99% of the names given as the "first names" of the "leads" are so off-the-wall that you think it would be easy to find them on the internet -- nope. And, if you do find one on LinkedIn, it's a "person" with no picture, no information, and no contacts! I can't tell you how many "fake" leads I have come across! On top of that, when I started comparing what the descriptions were for what they needed -- they were all very similar (all very vague).
DON'T put your business on Thumbtack unless you have hundreds of dollars to blow every week. If you already have your business on there, copy and save your profile (so you have it) and copy and save all your positive reviews (so you have them) -- just in case they go out of business before you had a chance to do that!
They should have the potential customers pay $10 (and reduce the fees for the pros). If a customer is SERIOUS about finding an awesome professional to help with his/her project, they won't mind paying $10 to find that contact! In addition, they should make the customer provide a legitimate phone number and email address.
It just makes no sense to pay $20-$70 per POTENTIAL lead with no guarantee of ever being able to have a conversation with the client! With their new business model, all they were doing was simply charging my credit card over and over and I never got any new clients or the opportunity to talk with potential client! Prior to that -- when I was picking and choosing the projects I wanted to respond to --and was paying to send them quotes, I was getting a new client every day! A few weeks ago I responded to about 50 projects -- just to see what responses I would get via their new model! I got lame questions like "Can I call you?" (and, of course, never got a call but got charged on my credit card $20 for that question!) or I was asked a question that was answered in my profile (and got charged for that question).
I am done with them. Their business model will NOT sustain itself if they have no pros (like me) no longer on board.
Thumbtack seemed like a good idea, they changed the way they do things. You only pay for the quote if the client contacts you! They are charging too much. $16.56 for a customer response, Im charging $20 for my service, no profit, pulse more than half of the people that contact you flake out. Not worth it.
Thumbtack has changed its platform and it is a total rip off to the Pro environment. They charge $40-$70 for leads that customers dont follow up on reply. Why should I pay $43 for a customer who is shopping around to ask me what is the next step for me to reply and never hear back from the customer, when that customer never had plans on or intent on hiring someone from the beginning? Maybe you should start charging the customer a percentage instead of price gauging us!
DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE! I REPEAT DO NOT USE! THEY STEAL YOUR MONEY FOR "LEADS" THAT ARE NOT LEADS. Send you service request for things way outside of your area and for things that are not even for your company. I work in concrete and I got asphalt and stucco requests. Does nothing but fill up your inbox with work that people won't even respond.
This is a total rip off and scam. Skirting towards illegal. Contractors pay for any communication and most communication is just asking a question or the customer was not serious and just getting names. No proof, but it feels like many request are not real, almost made up request to get money from you. I also find that customers on this site want something done for little to no money.
Answer: Thumbtack does not generate fake requests. When our professionals come to Thumbtack to meet new customers, we know how important it is to receive requests that can help them expand their clientele. We have a lot of customers that come to Thumbtack and hire professionals to help them complete their personal projects. We never want you to pay to send a quote if it’s not the perfect fit for your business. This is why you can view the details of each request before you send a quote and introduce yourself to the customer. James - I’m so sorry that the concerns you’ve brought to our attention haven’t been responded to in an appropriate amount of time, this is never our intention. It's important to us to obsess about answering our customers and professionals questions and concerns within a timely manner. We are a real company that can always be improving. You can read more about our company in reputable sources such as Forbes and the New York Times. If anyone has specific concerns about certain requests you’re receiving, we’d be happy to review them and see how we can help. Feel free to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we have an amazing support team that is just waiting to talk to you.
Answer: Hi Kay, I’d be happy to answer your questions. When we initially started Thumbtack in 2009, we tried multiple business models. This included a commission based model, but there were some concerns. When professionals didn’t pay for each quote they sent out, there was nothing to stop pros from quoting as much as possible, regardless of if they were the right fit for the job. Paying for each quote encourages better quality quotes and creates a much better experience for customers. Like you mentioned, it’s important for us to get customers to try our site and continue to hire professionals. In the end, pros are paying to promote and advertise themselves to customers that are already actively looking for that particular service. S. G has an amazing point, and Thumbtack is a great introduction site. There’s a lot of potential to expand your clientele, but sometimes it takes some tweaking to your profile and quotes to increase your response rate. The goal is to create a connection through your profile and quote message, and we’re here to help you do this. It’s kind of like sending the customer a virtual portfolio of your experience, achievements, and reviews. I do want to clarify that Thumbtack does not create fake requests, and it goes against everything we value as a company. While Thumbtack may not be the perfect fit for every business, we strongly believe that we can help connect businesses with new customers and foster growth. If you’d like to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we’d love to give you more personalized help or answer any other concerns you may have.
Answer: We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service. Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network. We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!
Answer: The reason you had a lull in leads we because thumbtack had a manual action penalty levied against them. If you are not sure what that is you should google search it. The letter you received from Thumbtack regarding this was (as usual) not fully truthful. The letter does not detail the slimy tactics thumbtack used ti enhance google rankings in organic search returns. Do yourself a favor and search this phrase "thumbtack manual action penalty"
Answer: With our recent changes, you're only charged when a customer responds to your quote with interest in working with you. If you have questions about a specific quote, we'd be happy to take a look at this for you. Just send us a message on Facebook with your email address and the customer's name.
Answer: We want to make sure you get the most out of our site and see a return on the investment you've made with us. Please give us a call at (800) 948-2034 when you have time so we can go over your concerns with us.
