They charged me $10 for 2quotes that were identical in size and the 3rd one was $28 same size job they are scamming bug time and now no telephone support huge rip off im done canceled the credit card on file and will not be using them again sorry this is crazy as hell
They have recently switched their system - if you contact the pro they get charged highway robbery rates. I had one person contact me about one job (that they then flaked on) and I was charged $57+... $57 to waste my time with a poor customer and a refusal on Thumbtacks part to even consider a partial refund is garnering them a negative review everywhere I can put one. I've been screwed over by this company too many times to ever use it again.
Be careful of this site. They are purposely vague in their pricing explanations because they don't want you to know your costs. They are only interested in getting your referral money, even if it means charging you more than the contract worth. I quoted a client a very low fee for a quick question and Thumbtack charged me $46 over the quote... yes I just LOST $$ on a Thumbtack engagement. Also, their customer service is useless. They only send canned answers and really don't try and resolve anything. No customer focus at this organization. Businesses Beware!
Thumbtack is a terrible company to do business with. Do not sign up with them. Do not offer your services nor build a profile on their webpage, because you will only encounter terrible customer service and experience the bad business practices they follow once someone contacts you for a service. I'll share my experience:
Thumbtack knows my availability because I put it in my calendar. Someone messaged me for my service at a time I was available only to ask "are you available on my date" and Thumbtack charged my card. Because that client already sent out 4 similar messages to other pro members, we all got charged on our cards despite the lady getting the deal with another pro member. So basically... I got charged $13 just for a lady to ask me if "I was available" when clearly, I let Thumbtack know my availability through their system. This happened several times with other cleints that fell through as well. They would simply ask "Are you available?" and I would get charged $13 every time...
I called to complain and explain that Thumbtack KNEW my availability and explained to them that I shouldn't get charged for the lady asking me if I was available. Their customer service is the WORST. I spoke to a representative on the phone and she said I would get a refund. I told her I wanted to make sure it was a refund back to my credit card and not as "credits." She confirmed over the phone that I would be refunded to my card. Then... she emails me an hour later saying she cannot refund me to my card. Absolutely TERRIBLE customer service.
They get lousy clients and they really suck. It's a losing proposition for pros and clients alike. Many bad experiences with them.
Looking for guitar lessons so naturally it recommends a fitness trainer. Tells me it has 7 matches, then 6 matches, then comes up with a fitness trainer 5 counties away. Don't waste you time.
If you are going to use Thumbtack to find business be prepared to pay for nothing. You no longer have any control over what you spend and there is no way to verify the leads or responses. Thumbtack is now a rip off for business people.
Thumbtack is garbage... THEY USE TO BE A GOOD PLATFORM Like you all say. Lets put THUMBTACK OUT OF BUSINESS. WE WAS THE PAYING CUSTOMER THAT THEY DO NOT PROTECT.
AND GET THIS, THUMBTACK SAYS THAT WE PROS REQUESTED FOR THE PLATFORM TO BE LIKE THIS. LOOK AT THE CHANGES THEY ARE DOING WITHOUT PROPER NOTICE TO US PROS.
PORCH.COM IS WAY BETTER AT LEASE YOU SEE WHAT YOU WILL BE CHARGED. TELL YOUR CLIENTS TO USE PORCH
They charge you what they want when they want. If the customer sends you a message saying hi I decided to go with someone else, they charge you. They said that was a lead. How is it a lead when the customer tells you they are going with someone else? They have a "NO REFUND" policy. I wanted to give no stars!
I was charged nearly $30.00 for a quote that was $160.00. It turned out the potential customer was just shopping. Additionally, it's bad enough we really don't know how the systems calculates the fee, it's NOT EVEN consistent! I've been charged approx $10 for the exact same quote. Customer support is a JOKE. All they do is repeat the same thing over and over via live chat. Which is time consuming and NOT effective.
As a Top Pro for the last three years, I had many good clients with Thumbtack. Now TT has a quoting system that does not allow you to see what they are charging for the contact. I was billed $18 for a $150 dollar job! God forbid if someone ask a question like "What's next?"... boom! You get billed. I have had so many dead end leads and I have paid a ton of money for people who were fraudulent, just shopping or flakes. The words "I am being scammed" kept popping into my head as I responded to some of these queries. Many would ask one question and I would never hear from them again. But I got billed anyway by TT. Whatever Thumbtack was, they are no longer. Their reputation has gone down the toilet with this new "algorithm" that supposedly calculates prices. It is no longer a good deal for the pros and the TT management is not fixing it anytime soon. Quoter BEWARE!
I am one of the top pro on Thumbtack as heating and cooling specialist. I was not happy with their charges ( Contractors being charged extremely high each time they send a quote to a customer for any work) but I was kinda managing it and was able to establish good customer service and a review record. They made changes to charges and suppose to be better but oh my God! What a rubbery... They charged me 75$ for sending a quote to customer even though not certain that the customer is legend and customer never went beyond just sending me a text.( yes I have been charged 75$ because customer send me a message saying "he will call".)
I stopped sending quotes to customers pause all that hard work good service due charges extremely high. That also means contractors will increase their charges because Thumbtack charges more than they should.
I have told TT many times to allow homeowners the option to pay $1 to connect with a contractor. Contractors could then have the OPTION to only see the homeowners that have paid. It would screen out the unserious. Until then I am not buying more leads to nowhere.
Stop placing all the burden on the contractor to prove their worth and ask homeowners to prove their worth as well.
Until then the product is no good. I tried TT first in 2016 and found that most homeowners were unserious or had wild expectations of cost (quote: Sorry I'm looking for someone to remodel my kitchen for $500). I thought I might give it a go again in 2018 only to find that they now sell leads completely in the blind. In other words the contractor not only has no idea of the quality of the product before they buy, they now don't know what it costs. Crazy.
It looks like Thumbtack is going the way of Homeadvisor. I just realized I paid over $100.00 dollars for 3 leads that went no where. I have stopped using them until they can correct these problems. When they said there lead cost would go up alittle bit, I didn't know they were talking 300%. More crooks in the lead generation busines.
I wanted to warn you about a terrible experience I had with Thumbtack. Ive used them before and found a great moving company that moved us across the country. Therefore, when we were wanting a custom bookshelf made for our living room, I was excited because I thought I found a great carpenter on their site. He had almost perfect, verified reviews. He came to our house, created a prototype for our bookshelf, and we were excited to hear we would have a bookshelf made in 4 weeks. We signed a contract where we paid 70% upfront. After paying the carpenter, he stopped responding to our calls/texts/emails. We were really worried because we had paid close to $5000 and didnt know what was going on. We spoke to Thumbtack, and they told us not to worry and that 9/10 times they were able to resolve things. Thumbtack had his credit card on file and tried charging him for the full amount but could only get half of it cleared. They mailed us a check for around $2400. At this point, we heard back from the contractor and he apologized saying he had health issues. We went to his shop and saw the wood he had purchased. He assured us that it would take two weeks or so to finish it up. Afterwards we didnt hear from him again for a couple weeks and then we got a text from him saying he that he cant finish the project because his health is too bad and he would repay us the balance. After trying to get a hold of him again, we heard nothing. In the meantime, the contractor posted pictures on social media of him making a table with the wood that we presumed he purchased to make our shelves. We ceased contacting him further because he was tweeting messages that were satanic and made us feel uncomfortable. Furthermore, we saw online that he has a criminal background. We contacted Thumbtack again for their assistance, and after our case was escalated to a manager, they advised there was nothing else they could do to help. They said that its now between us and the contractor and they have no additional responsibility to us. When I asked Thumbtack does background checks, they say they ALLOW the vendor to complete one. This experience has been ridiculous and we feel beyond disappointed. We are out $2400 because we trusted Thumbtack to vet their vendors. Instead, they put a criminal on their platform and refused to take responsibility. STAY AWAY FROM THUMBTACK so you dont find yourself in a similar situation!
Today i joined a long list of longtime, high performing, legitimate, insured contractors to leave Thumbtack after multiple years. They have become a scam company... Not only have the increased bid pricing each year by almost 100%, in the last two years they have doubled the amount of contractors that can bid on a job. Therefore, to stay on as a Pro with Thumbtack, I have to pay much more for much less. Thumbtack you really disappoint me, it was once so good. Now only the dumbest and most desperate of people will bid on jobs... and thats really bad for the consumer.
I am a Thumbtack Pro with a 96% 5 star review average. I found out today with no prior notice that their business model has changed and the cost of a lead for me has gone up so much that it no longer works for me to continue doing business with Thumbtack. I used them for 2 years and felt the leads were priced within reason but this change prices them out of the ball park.
I see these 5 star reviews for pro people have hired on Thumbtack. Yes, there are a ton of talented honesty pros out there. This site is for reviewing Thumbtack as a site. There is no grey area here. Thumbtack has joined the dark side. There is no transparency with there new Instant Match model. They are stealing pros money. Thats all there is to it. They are extremely bold, short sided and wrong for doing this.
I am updating my review and changing it from one star to five stars because it is actually proved to work for us. We love Thumbtack much better than Porch if comparing the two. Easy to use, and provides very informative leads. We like it. The customer base is about average or below average, but overall, Thumbtack is helping us out a lot.
I was charged $75 for quoting a $150 bid on a project with a $200 budget. They don't pre-screen these requests very well and the charge for the quote is not published anywhere, so you don't know the cost until they charge you. I was also charged $36 for a "thank you for your quote" response. Pre-screening templates need to be fixed. Not allow bogus requests. Require requestor to put up a deposit. Refund pro's contact fee if project is cancelled altogether.
Answer: Thumbtack does not generate fake requests. When our professionals come to Thumbtack to meet new customers, we know how important it is to receive requests that can help them expand their clientele. We have a lot of customers that come to Thumbtack and hire professionals to help them complete their personal projects. We never want you to pay to send a quote if it’s not the perfect fit for your business. This is why you can view the details of each request before you send a quote and introduce yourself to the customer. James - I’m so sorry that the concerns you’ve brought to our attention haven’t been responded to in an appropriate amount of time, this is never our intention. It's important to us to obsess about answering our customers and professionals questions and concerns within a timely manner. We are a real company that can always be improving. You can read more about our company in reputable sources such as Forbes and the New York Times. If anyone has specific concerns about certain requests you’re receiving, we’d be happy to review them and see how we can help. Feel free to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we have an amazing support team that is just waiting to talk to you.
Answer: Hi Kay, I’d be happy to answer your questions. When we initially started Thumbtack in 2009, we tried multiple business models. This included a commission based model, but there were some concerns. When professionals didn’t pay for each quote they sent out, there was nothing to stop pros from quoting as much as possible, regardless of if they were the right fit for the job. Paying for each quote encourages better quality quotes and creates a much better experience for customers. Like you mentioned, it’s important for us to get customers to try our site and continue to hire professionals. In the end, pros are paying to promote and advertise themselves to customers that are already actively looking for that particular service. S. G has an amazing point, and Thumbtack is a great introduction site. There’s a lot of potential to expand your clientele, but sometimes it takes some tweaking to your profile and quotes to increase your response rate. The goal is to create a connection through your profile and quote message, and we’re here to help you do this. It’s kind of like sending the customer a virtual portfolio of your experience, achievements, and reviews. I do want to clarify that Thumbtack does not create fake requests, and it goes against everything we value as a company. While Thumbtack may not be the perfect fit for every business, we strongly believe that we can help connect businesses with new customers and foster growth. If you’d like to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we’d love to give you more personalized help or answer any other concerns you may have.
Answer: We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service. Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network. We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!
Answer: The reason you had a lull in leads we because thumbtack had a manual action penalty levied against them. If you are not sure what that is you should google search it. The letter you received from Thumbtack regarding this was (as usual) not fully truthful. The letter does not detail the slimy tactics thumbtack used ti enhance google rankings in organic search returns. Do yourself a favor and search this phrase "thumbtack manual action penalty"
Answer: With our recent changes, you're only charged when a customer responds to your quote with interest in working with you. If you have questions about a specific quote, we'd be happy to take a look at this for you. Just send us a message on Facebook with your email address and the customer's name.
Answer: We want to make sure you get the most out of our site and see a return on the investment you've made with us. Please give us a call at (800) 948-2034 when you have time so we can go over your concerns with us.
