I'm disgusted at how this company treats their pros. Specially when we spent hundreds of thousands of dollars for leads. They are greedy and they treat their professionals very poorly this is not a business model I will ever want to be associated with again
They said that if you get leads and the customer get another cleaner they give you a refund no they don't give you a refund they just take money from you and they said that the average of a lead is between 1 to $20 no is not some leads are 45 dollars it doesn't make sense they have bad customer service
Avoid...
The golden rule says if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all.
Finding out that as you pay for Thumbtack to promote you they charge you for every single lead automatically and they never tell you what the charges are. They will range from $10 to $60 for one lead you may not even get. Even if you are promoted, they promote other professionals that are also paying for the auto lead so they are getting paid from who knows how many professionals. If you do not use the promotion auto charge you can submit a quote to the customer but your bid is basically hidden in an email still promoting the other professionals. So in other words, Thumbtacks is in it for themselves, not the customers, not the professionals, for themselves! The only one making any money here is Thumbtacks. By the time you pay for their "leads" you have spent $300 to make $400 on a job. You are better off spending your money on an ad in the newspaper. Your odds are better!
Thumbtack is a scam that overcharges "pros". DO NOT USE. They make it so hard for you to change your settings so you don't automatically get charged. There's no way to get that money back for when you do get charged.
You get charged for talking to customers that you most likely won't work with because they don't respond. Don't do it. Save your money.
Thumbtack is a rip off and a middleman which takes customers away from pros.
I get charged a lot from you. Most customers never respond. I get notified about potential customers and then cant find them anywhere. This company can afford to advertise big time off the backs of the contractors who do the jobs.
I recently recorded a demo for voice-over at 7th Wave Music in Morristown, NJ. The guy running the show there, Larry Kucher, is some wonderful pro and person. I was actually nauseous, this being my first time recording in a studio, and Larry walked me in off the ledge and made the memory of the experience AWESOME. He was patient and professional all the way through the session and I am happy to recommend his studio to anyone needing that sort of service!
Very dishonest service for professionals!
Now I understand why this company worth 1.3 Billion dollars!
They are nothing but scammers!
Professionals! Do not fall for this scam! You will end up paying a lot of money for leads that in 9 cases out of 10 do not work!
On top of that, they will charge your card even for leads that you never accepted!
I own an IT company and tried Thumbtack for leads on pc repairs, network installation, web design. I used the promotion feature to pay for the lead and will get all the contact information, then when I tap to accept, my credit card on file was charged. I would then contact the customer via the thumbtack software only as this is the only way you can for the first reach out.
After 7 paid leads I NEVER HAD ANYONE RETURN MY CALL OR EMAILS I REPEAT NOT ONE PERSON RESPONDED. I contacted thumbtack and I was credited NOT REFUNDED for 3 of the leads and the other 4 NOTHING.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY AND FORMAT.
We have a cleaning business and decided to use Thumbtack, but it's been the worse experience. We decided to do a search of the customer before going into their homes and boy oh boy was I glad we did. We came across a customer who has an extensive criminal history, who's known to commit robbery and we warned Thumbtack about this customer and their response was very lax and they didn't take it serious. At that moment, we knew to come off the site and use another platform. Thumbtack doesn't care about our needs, they are just focused on the high fees they charge. Note to any business who chooses to use them, DO YOUR RESEARCH ON THE CUSTOMER BEFORE ENTERING THEIR HOME! They won't do it for you. Thank God we are smart enough to do so... b/c we may not have made it out alive yesterday. THUMBTACK IS THE WORSE! RUN FAR AWAY FROM THEM!
Not only that, I requested my money back for this particular lead and they said they found nothing wrong with the lead so I wouldn't be able to get a refund. I'm telling you all... please do your research before hiring a business or taking on a customer. The fact that this guy was able to sign up and hire people is insane. Thumbtack just doesn't care. I guess they will when (god forbid) something happens to someone. Thumbtack sucks!
I contacted 5 of their "Pros" and not 1 of them got back to me. And if you go on Thumbtacks website to find anything else you'll find there is no way to contact you but they will send you a No Reply email wanting to know if you hired them? How can they not see NO ONE contacted me? They suck will never use or recommend.
THESE PEOPLE ARE BIG TIME THIEVES! THERE RIP OFFS AND SHOULD BE CAUGHT AND SHUT DOWN! PROS AND CLIENTS SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THESE CROOKS! NEVER SEEN SO MANY BAD REVIEWS WITH A COMPANY AS THIS S##T HOLE, THEY DESERVE EVERY BAD REVIEW THEY GOT! F##K THIS PLACE!
I would like to praise my cleaning expert, Michelle. Finally, I have a cleaning service I can count on to leave by beach house beautiful! No longer do I have to worry about how it is going to look when my new renters arrive! She is so thorough. She cleans everything and I am so happy to have her taking the best care ever of my rental home.

Not only did they up their charge for leads. $40-60 per lead is insane for a hope against 20 other people. I feel they are making false requests somehow and stealing the professionals money.
They need to fix there greedy ways.
Thumbtack as changed the dynamic of the company from them working for the Pro's to the Pro's working for Thumbtack. This is disheartening to those that have years vested in them.
They take your money and give you leads that don't stick around or respond. I have been with them for years and recently it has gotten worse. Now they submitted my information to a background check service without my permission. I have severed ties with thumbtack because of the above. Checkr still is send a background check request without me being able to end it. With no way to contact this company. I blame Thumbtack for this intrusion. Stay away from them.
Dj a young was a great pick for my nephews graduation party. He's professional and knows his crowd. I would definitely recommend him!
Thumbtack charges you for "leads" but these leads never respond, no matter how fast you respond. Try to talk to there customer service? Nope. They won't refund you a penny. If I had to guess, they mix in real customers with there own bots/employees who pose as real people, thats why dont respond.
For example:
If I'm promoting myself for $100/week and am promised 5-10 leads, when those leads don't show, they send fake users to "contact" you, but never respond.
The way I know they are faking it is every customer that doesn't respond asks the same question, "Whats your availability"?
They will nickel and dime you to death. You get charged whether or not a client responds to you or you declined the job! They don't care but the money ends up adding up!
Answer: Thumbtack does not generate fake requests. When our professionals come to Thumbtack to meet new customers, we know how important it is to receive requests that can help them expand their clientele. We have a lot of customers that come to Thumbtack and hire professionals to help them complete their personal projects. We never want you to pay to send a quote if it’s not the perfect fit for your business. This is why you can view the details of each request before you send a quote and introduce yourself to the customer. James - I’m so sorry that the concerns you’ve brought to our attention haven’t been responded to in an appropriate amount of time, this is never our intention. It's important to us to obsess about answering our customers and professionals questions and concerns within a timely manner. We are a real company that can always be improving. You can read more about our company in reputable sources such as Forbes and the New York Times. If anyone has specific concerns about certain requests you’re receiving, we’d be happy to review them and see how we can help. Feel free to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we have an amazing support team that is just waiting to talk to you.
Answer: Hi Kay, I’d be happy to answer your questions. When we initially started Thumbtack in 2009, we tried multiple business models. This included a commission based model, but there were some concerns. When professionals didn’t pay for each quote they sent out, there was nothing to stop pros from quoting as much as possible, regardless of if they were the right fit for the job. Paying for each quote encourages better quality quotes and creates a much better experience for customers. Like you mentioned, it’s important for us to get customers to try our site and continue to hire professionals. In the end, pros are paying to promote and advertise themselves to customers that are already actively looking for that particular service. S. G has an amazing point, and Thumbtack is a great introduction site. There’s a lot of potential to expand your clientele, but sometimes it takes some tweaking to your profile and quotes to increase your response rate. The goal is to create a connection through your profile and quote message, and we’re here to help you do this. It’s kind of like sending the customer a virtual portfolio of your experience, achievements, and reviews. I do want to clarify that Thumbtack does not create fake requests, and it goes against everything we value as a company. While Thumbtack may not be the perfect fit for every business, we strongly believe that we can help connect businesses with new customers and foster growth. If you’d like to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we’d love to give you more personalized help or answer any other concerns you may have.
Answer: We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service. Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network. We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!
Answer: The reason you had a lull in leads we because thumbtack had a manual action penalty levied against them. If you are not sure what that is you should google search it. The letter you received from Thumbtack regarding this was (as usual) not fully truthful. The letter does not detail the slimy tactics thumbtack used ti enhance google rankings in organic search returns. Do yourself a favor and search this phrase "thumbtack manual action penalty"
Answer: With our recent changes, you're only charged when a customer responds to your quote with interest in working with you. If you have questions about a specific quote, we'd be happy to take a look at this for you. Just send us a message on Facebook with your email address and the customer's name.
Answer: We want to make sure you get the most out of our site and see a return on the investment you've made with us. Please give us a call at (800) 948-2034 when you have time so we can go over your concerns with us.
