ABSOLUTELY SCAM OF A COMPANY! DO NOT USE THEM. THEY WILL CHARGE YOUR CREDIT CARDS INDISCRIMINATELY AT ANY AMOUNT THEY WANT. SEND OUT FAKE LEADS TO MAX OUT YOUR BUDGET AND TERMINATE YOUR ACCOUNT IF YOU DISPUTE A CHARGE REGARDLESS OF HOW MANY CLIENTS YOU ALREADY PAID FOR! I ALREADY SENT OUT A REPORT THE THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF CA. AND THE BBB AND I SUGGEST EVERYONE DO
THE SAME. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE COMPANY. STAY AWAY FROM THEM.
They advertise no fees until a client responds to your bid. Then fake clients respond, they probably work for thumbtack and ask a question which means $25 is billed to your credit card. Never heard from again! Money grabbing rip off! Do not fall for this scam!

On Saturday 08/24/2019, I contacted Thumbtack in regards to a review that was posted that was not legitimate, and also had come from a customer on their platform. That threatened my staff, harrassed my staff outside of the platform and on the platform. I ended up having to file 2 separate police reports.
Ater calling in on the 24th and being lied to that they were going to resolve the issues, and take action againt the customer. Which never happened I than was repeatedly lied to through email by 4 different people. To than be told that they apologize and are glad that I reached out to my local authorities but there was absolutely nothing they could.
So in other words as long as they can take your money for leads, your safety means absolutely nothing to them at all.
I been with thumbtack over a year they charge all this crazy amounts of money per lead can you imagine how much money they are making per contractors a day costumers have no idea we get charge just to reply back to massages and if don't get hired you still have pay over $50 $70 dollars per lead.
I utilized thumbtack as a pro for over two years, and was a "top pro" all of 2018. I wasn't totally satisfied with the quality of leads but a good portion of my business came from them. Then suddenly my account is deactivated due to "strong links" to an account that had not paid a $17 bill. The problem is, I've never heard of this other account and their customer service couldn't give me any info unless I was able to verify the log in information. Of course I can't, IT'S NOT MY ACCOUNT. I've called their customer service numerous times but get no direction as to how to resolve this and promises that a "team" is working on it and I'll get a call or email back in 24 hours. Never heard a word back yet. It's clear they have no idea how this happened or how to fix it and are just telling me some crap to get me off the phone. I guess thumbtack has gotten too big to care about losing a measly few thousand a year from one client, but I'm pissed and severely disappointed in their garbage customer service.
Their prices are reasonable, competitive, and negotiable. The staff is friendly, reliable and professional. The staff is knowledgeable about what materials to use for different projects.
I have been with thumbtack.com for 7 years or so as a pro. At first it was good but over the last 4 years it has turned into a money pit and a hassle. The customer service for pros is horrible, theh lie they cheat the pros and I will be leaving thumbtack all together. I SPEND ENTIRELY TOO MUCH MONEY WITH THEM TO BE TREATED THE WAY THEY TREAT ME. THE PRO PRICING HAS TRIPLED.IN 4 YEARS AND NEVER A WARNING. TOTAL CROOKS NOW IN MY OPINION.
This so called business should not exist. These are people who figured out a way to make money by promoting people who call themselves professionals. However their listings are not vetted. Customer service is extremely poor. There's no value added here - it's actually better to use the yellow pages. Most concerning to me is Thumbtack apparent lack of ethics.
I felt compelled to offer my review so others can take head and steer away from being a Thumbtack pro. I've been apart of the increasingly changing platform (not for the better) for nearly 3 years. In the beginning, it was so-so but I figured I'd ride it out with my start-up business in hopes to get exposure at the very least. I've decided to part ways after the company deducted various amounts from my business account for "leads." Simply put, in the Thumbtack platform, a lead is a customer expressing interest in a service where the pro is 'allowed' to reach out to them exclusively within the Thumbtack platform to pitch their service. This lead includes no contact information and no guarantee of something even as small and meaningless as a read receipt. Each pitching pro pays upwards of 5% of their quote price in hopes to get the lead's business. In my experience, 94% of the time (I've actually done the math and this is a real, unexaggerated number) the lead does not respond and you have no way of knowing if they've even read your message or if they've chosen the competition (even if you call to ask Thumbtack they will give you no further info.) After my most recent experience of being harrassed (7 unwanted emails within a 12-hour time frame & a final email explaining my search rank results would suffer if I didn't submit my quote - whether available or not) I've decided to close my useless account. It is now my mission to explain to hopefuls looking to gain business that this is not the place to succeed.
If you see a "pro" with their phone number be very wary of using that professional. First of all, it's against Thumbtack policy to do include a phone number on any pro's picture. You're supposed to contact the pro through either the Thumbtack website, or through their app. Don't fall prey to shady professionals. If you contact them directly, like I did, you have no recourse to leave a review of their shoddy work on the Thumbtack website, allowing the pro the opportunity to continue deceptive practices and cheat Thumbtack out of their fees as well, and leaving you the paying customer no recourse to warn others. Thumbtack DOES NOT screen their picture postings of their professionals, so you'll be amazed at how many of them post pictures with phone numbers so you are "duped" into a direct contact scenario. DON'T FALL FOR IT. Thumback DOES NOT HAVE YOUR BACK HERE! Here's a picture of the painting job I paid over $ 2,000 for, plus the contractor has threatend to lien my house.
THUMBTACK use to be a perfect tool for my business but they have changed recently. I use to receive 4 to 8 quote requests a day from potential customers and now I don't receive any. The only job notifications I get now are from out of state. I work the Baltimore area and I only see requests from Pa, Va, De, NJ and DC now. This is because I removed my profile specifics in which allowed THUMBTACK to automatically charge me for quotes even if I did not respond to the quote request. In short, because I opted out of the auto charge plan, they are penalizing me by showing jobs only from other states.
After reviewing how much I have invested in Thumbtack comparing to what I have received, the losses don't justify the earnings.
Many Thumbtack pros have expressed their frustration as well for the way Thumbtack charges its fees. Instead of being an App like Fiverr and other ones where the client truly hires the Pro, and the App charges through their own system, Thumbtack chooses to take the money regardless whether the pro gets hired or not.
A simple reply from a client means a charge for the Pro. This is unethical and absurd.
Clients don't know this policy and they are entitled to ask questions to the pros. And a simple reply means a service charge for the Pro, plus, with different amounts.
Again, this is absurd and a heartless way of doing business.
Tried them out for 2 weeks and very very disappointed in the way they conduct business. They automatically charge you in the settings if you are set up in your specialized field. Had no replies back from potential customers and can't believe they still charge you for a service like this that they don't bring you alot of solid leads. Even had a girl last week contact me to ask if I could set a $300 limit to use for marketing at their discretion and basically take your money at their convenience. No thank you I'm done! I will be surprised if they are around in another years time. If you try out the service basically you will spend $70 -100 right away and a very little return on your investment. Spend marketing dollars else where please. Best advice ever.
I am not sure about Thumb Tack but the company I hire off their listing Clean & Care, here in Largo did an excellent job. They are very Honest and Punctual, did home repairs, painting and entire home cleaning as promised, and on time. I will definitely use and recommend them to everyone I know GREAT JOB CLEAN & CARE THANKS
When I started with Thumbtack,
They were charging less than $5 a lead and I was willing to pay that in hopes of converting that lead but now they've gotten greedy and their prices have gone out the roof and what they're going to find is that they need successful businesses like mine.
1st they raised their prices out the roof and then they started charging me for a Leeds that I haven't even seen yet.
The business I'm in is very unique and there's just a handful of techs. Eventually they will run out of businesses to overcharge when our business no longer needs their leads.
Thumbtack said they would put me in touch with business owners. Needed a mobile groomer. Reached out to multiple and only one responded and took longer than a week. Turns out that Thumbtack does not give the business messages without paying them which they did not tell me. Don't use this service if you want immediate attention.
I'm a small business owner and Thumbtack charges between $10 and $50 for a 'lead' but most of the time when you get a lead the 'customer' never responds and then thumbtack hides behind a horrible horrible 'refund policy disclaimer" to basically say "sucks to be you we have your money".
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. I'm serious. I saw the bad reviews and thought "oh those other people are just bad at converting leads" but most of the stuff you pay for at thumbtack couldn't be called a 'lead' by anyone on earth.
I got a job through Tentrr i finished 1 job but they didnt send enough supplies to finish both sites so we left, well tentrr is saying they wont pay me because of some made up issues they said they had which was basically u founded just upset cause they had to hire somebody else to finish that job, i sent pics and all proper paperwork to jeremy at thumbtack over a month ago to see if they could talk to thier customer to makes things right, and all he could do is say you need to try to work something out with them on your own? I informed him that they were not answering or responding to my emails so i mentioned aquiring a lawyer and THEY DEACTIVATED MY ACCOUNT!
I was referred to Kenny Vargas of Pura Vida Pool and Spa Professionals because our spa was not working. We have had the spa for14 years and this was the 1st time we were having an issue. Kenny spent a lot of time diagnosing the problem. He worked really hard and it was really hot but he was a cool as a cucumber. He replaced the necessary parts and the spa works great! Kenny is also very personable and a joy to do business with. If we ever have a problem in the future I would not hesitate to call him and will refer him to others.
I was looking for someone to haul a half-truck load of construction waste. From a google search I contacted a few ads, some being with Thumbtack. I got 2 emails back saying a had a bidder, $50. There were no links to reply to, so I looked up one of the people, phoned them, and they said they didn't know about the bid. They asked me to forward it to them. They also said they would do it for $130.
Don't waste your time trying to use Thumbtack - it's frustrating and you'll probably just waste a lot of time.
Answer: Thumbtack does not generate fake requests. When our professionals come to Thumbtack to meet new customers, we know how important it is to receive requests that can help them expand their clientele. We have a lot of customers that come to Thumbtack and hire professionals to help them complete their personal projects. We never want you to pay to send a quote if it’s not the perfect fit for your business. This is why you can view the details of each request before you send a quote and introduce yourself to the customer. James - I’m so sorry that the concerns you’ve brought to our attention haven’t been responded to in an appropriate amount of time, this is never our intention. It's important to us to obsess about answering our customers and professionals questions and concerns within a timely manner. We are a real company that can always be improving. Answer: Hi Kay, I’d be happy to answer your questions. When we initially started Thumbtack in 2009, we tried multiple business models. This included a commission based model, but there were some concerns. When professionals didn’t pay for each quote they sent out, there was nothing to stop pros from quoting as much as possible, regardless of if they were the right fit for the job. Paying for each quote encourages better quality quotes and creates a much better experience for customers. Like you mentioned, it’s important for us to get customers to try our site and continue to hire professionals. In the end, pros are paying to promote and advertise themselves to customers that are already actively looking for that particular service. S. G has an amazing point, and Thumbtack is a great introduction site. There’s a lot of potential to expand your clientele, but sometimes it takes some tweaking to your profile and quotes to increase your response rate. The goal is to create a connection through your profile and quote message, and we’re here to help you do this. It’s kind of like sending the customer a virtual portfolio of your experience, achievements, and reviews. I do want to clarify that Thumbtack does not create fake requests, and it goes against everything we value as a company. While Thumbtack may not be the perfect fit for every business, we strongly believe that we can help connect businesses with new customers and foster growth. If you’d like to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we’d love to give you more personalized help or answer any other concerns you may have.
Answer: We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service. Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network. We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!
Answer: The reason you had a lull in leads we because thumbtack had a manual action penalty levied against them. If you are not sure what that is you should google search it. The letter you received from Thumbtack regarding this was (as usual) not fully truthful. The letter does not detail the slimy tactics thumbtack used ti enhance google rankings in organic search returns. Do yourself a favor and search this phrase "thumbtack manual action penalty"
Answer: With our recent changes, you're only charged when a customer responds to your quote with interest in working with you. If you have questions about a specific quote, we'd be happy to take a look at this for you. Just send us a message on Facebook with your email address and the customer's name.
Answer: We want to make sure you get the most out of our site and see a return on the investment you've made with us. Please give us a call at (800) 948-2034 when you have time so we can go over your concerns with us.
