I booked a car from Thrifty for July at the Keflavik airport in Iceland. I was quoted a rate of $798 for an automatic van. The agent on the phone confirmed the price and vehicle type. When I got the email confirmation, it was for a manual car at 798 EUROS! I called the Customer Service (pathetic) and waited almost two hours on hold including transfers to three different people. The supervisor confirmed that the agent made two mistakes in the rental. When I asked what they could do to make it right the supervisor said, and I quote, "We'll be sure to reprimand the agent". How do companies like this even stay in business? My advice, look elsewhere for a car...
Rented a car through WiseCars on 2/27/21, billed $194.78 & WiseCars told us it would only be a credit hold. There were about 25 people in line for Thrifty at Phoenix, when asked, we declined the insurance. The representative gave us the receipt & asked us to pick up our car from Hertz, Thrifty was out of cars, then started waiting on the next person. We did not notice he added the insurance, which we had declined. Had he gone over the rental agreement or receipt, we would have corrected his error on the insurance, but he did not do this. We paid close to $600.00 for 5 days rental. Thrifty needs to train the reps better & go over charges with customers, Not ask them to step aside & start waiting on the next person. I am only asking for the credit back of $102.91, I have been told the amount of insurance charged can not be credited. I think Thrifty should do something to correct their error & I should not have to pay for his mistake. We travel a lot & I hope Thrifty will do something to correct their mistake. This rental was from 3/05/21-3/09/21. WiseCars said I had to contact Thrifty regarding this issue of the credit.

In three recent rental episodes in Nashville withThrifty as a Blue Chip member, I have been incredibly underwhelmed with the total incompetence and carelessness with which this company does "business." In spite of being a Blue Chip member, which means that everything is supposedly taken care of in advance and you should walk up and see your name and parking space on the board so that you can go directly to your car, my family and I have had to stand in the cold line at the Nashville airport in their windy parking garage to wait for someone to help. Each time, I was given a different set of excuses for why the car wasn't ready and why I had to waste as much as 25 minutes in line waiting to get help. I have written to the company and I've even been told by one representative that my paperwork and my phone number would be put on top of the manager's desk for him to call me the next day. Here I am, 10 days later and still waiting for a phone call that will never come. Do not waste your time your money your effort your energy or your interest in anything more about Thrifty than reading the remainder of this review.
I had a rental agreement with Thrifty including all taxes and fees. When I arrived at Dulles in Washington DC at night with my family we were shuttled out to the rental office. They told me I could not use my credit card insurance which I have used for decades in many countries and states. They forced me to accept an additional $700 for insurance and fees. Such a con, and I had no options at that point. I wish the government or someone would do something about this company and industry. A person should be able to know what they are going to be charged before making an agreement.
Do NOT do business with Thrifty car rental, or sister companies Dollar Rent A Car and Hertz. At the counter, the rep "sold" me insurance for a week without mentioning the product. It doubled the cost of my rental and after I brought it to their attention, they refused to acknowledge their mistake and makes things right. This is NOT an honest company and should be avoided at all costs.
The worst rental car company in the world! Had a reservation booked for over a month got to the airport with reservation and they told us it was a minimum of 2 1/2 hour wait before we could get our car! And there were also 20 to 30 other people who had to wait 2 1/2 to 3 hours to get their car! Unacceptable
BE AWARE: Thrifty Car Rental, without informing its customers, charges them an administrative fee of $ 15 for each toll they pass. I feel very hurt, because their employee (brooklyn-NYC) did not inform me about this extraordinary charge. I am a frequent car renter, and in my entire life this has never happened to me before. I do not recommend this company at all. I called them to report the problem and their SAC laughed at me and refused to help me.
Don't ever rent a car from Thrifty! Worst company to do business with and customer service sucks! No one ever answer the phone. I rented a BMW and was given a KIA. No reduction in rental charges and when I contested the charges no one responded to my credit card company. Turned the charges over to a collection company without so much as an explanation. Please learn from this and never rent from them.
I rented a car from Thrifty in Reno NV for a week skiing in Tahoe.
Upon return the agent checked us in and inspected the car.
NO INDICATION WAS MADE BY THE AGENT that the car was dirty and that we would be assessed a $300 cleaning / damage charge. Matter of fact my receipt indicates that I ACCEPTED the charge when indeed it was never brought to my attention. If it was, I WOULD HAVE CLEANED THE CAR! I was never afforded the opportunity to do so.
The $300 charge was more than the costs of the rental.
Returned rental car to Thrifty car rental at Jacksonville Florida. Told ashes were on arm rest and car smelled of smoke. CHARGED $400 for smoking in car! Long story short I don't smoke! Also begs question how
are car return agents qualified are cars being sanitized according to CDC COVID-19 requirements?
They charged me a $15 admin fee for a $2 toll charge. Hope it was worth it for them, since I'll never be back.
Do not go with this company. Car broke down and had to wait over 2 hours for a tow truck then had to wait an hour for them to get us a ride to rent another car. Couldn't even fit all of our luggage in their car back so we had to leave some of our stuff where we were stuck at. Very rude and unhelpful. Stay away
Went through Expedia for travel arrangements to my daughter's wedding in Palm Springs, CA. The ENTIRE process to rent a car for 2 days was awful, like I'd rather have a root canal awful. I prepaid, purchased travel insurance, and I was still charged over $650.00 for what should have been easy and convenient. The customer service was deplorable, unfriendly and rude. Will never use this copy again, I'd rather get better service since I'm going to pay for either way.
Terrible experience. Booked through Expedia for daughter and boyfriend. Thrifty took advantage of them and charged card for $951.00 when booked for $296.12. Thrifty added full coverage insurance even though driver has full coverage and additional insurance purchased through Expedia. I was on speakerphone with Thrifty agent and daughter and boyfriend-told Thrifty to remove all insurance charges as they were unnecessary due to driver having full coverage and extra coverage purchased through Expedia. Agent said she removed. When I hung up agent then added on liability insurance-which was still unneeded as driver has full coverage and extra through Expedia. Agent told daughter and boyfriend they could cancel insurance when returning car so not to worry about it. Agent did not document driver's insurance. I called and was not able to speak to a manager until about 6 hours later because the agents kept hanging up on me. I explained to the manager, Joe, the situation. He said only way to remove would be for them to make an 8 hour round trip drive to break the contract. He also said no reason to contact his manager, Chan, because he and his agents made sure to document account "up and down" and that they can cancel the insurance on return, however no money back because it is a daily charge. Joe also went back and forth over discussing "personal" details of contract since I wasn't a signer but in the end gave me all details except the name of the agent that added the unnecessary/overcharged insurance. If you need to rent a car-be advised of opportunity they will take to overcharge and add unnecessary hidden fees without telling you-BEWARE when using Thrifty rental car, the Portland, PDX location is the one we used, as well as booking through Expedia as they have no control and no way of forcing Thrifty to abide by reservation booked through them. Shame on Thrifty for taking advantage of first time car renters. Why, logically would anyone need to purchase insurance through Thrifty if they already had full coverage and paid extra for the Expedia coverage? Not to mention all the other random charges that took it from $296.12 to $951.00. Steer clear of Thrifty car rental. Their direct phone # to desk at Portland airport location is *******565 option 0-not that it will do any good. Worst customer service. Hope it was worth the extra $169.95 you charged-it won't happen again-lesson learned.
I won't use you again and will make sure anyone and everyone knows of my experience. I'll even chip in for a more expensive car rental company to make sure no one else gets taken advantage of.
I prepurchased through a third party, picked up the car from Portland Airport for pickup on August 26th and returned it to the same location on August 29th.
Upon picking up my rental car I was asked if I wanted any additional services. I accepted the fuel service but declined the additional drivers and liability insurance. I specifically told the representative that I did not want additional insurance as the credit card which I used to purchase the reservation provides that. The representative acknowledged me and told me they would need to place a hold on my credit card for $320. I found this to be a lot considering I had prepurchased but the representative assured me it was normal and would be returned to me after I returned the vehicle and the fuel cost was deducted. At no point did they mention they had added insurance. They asked me to sign the signature pad to authorize the hold on my credit card. They did not mention that I was signing for the actual rental agreement to which the had added the liability insurance without my consent. Once I received my rental agreement the representative once again mentioned nothing about the insurance but did point out the agreed upon fuel service estimate. I looked at the paperwork but did not realize there was an additional item listed simply as "LIS" and with the representatives assurance I trusted everything was in order. I returned the car quickly and easily being told that I would receive a finalized receipt in a few days. It wasn't until the additional charge posted to my credit card that I became concerned. Still unaware of the additional and unwanted insurance added to my rental I had contacted the booking company to investigate the charge. I thought perhaps I was mistakenly double charged. Upon their investigation they informed me that the charge "LIS" was in fact for liability insurance. This was immediately concerning as I had explicitly refused this service. I contacted Thrifty customer service to further inquire about this and although the representative was polite they told that there was nothing that could be done for me. Very unfortunate. I did request to place a complaintwhich they did oblige me. I'm not sure what that actually accomplished.
Not only did this unduly increase my cost by nearly 60%, but I feel that I was mislead and cheated. This experience abused my trust and lacked transparency, and was unethical.
Lesson learned, I will very intentional not use thrifty in the future even if that means spending more money INTENTIONALLY with another company.
Definitely do NOT recommend
This is the worst car rental place Do Not Rent from them! They offer cheap prices to lure you in but have all these shady things they do in fine print. Read their terms because they are not standard. They take a deposit and do not give refunds. If you try to change the reservation it won't let you and then they keep all your money and do not give you the car if you don't pick it up when your suppose to. I tried to change and wasn't ever to get through and they kept 100 percent of my money and would not rent me the car that was already paid for for 9 days. These guys are crooks.
I recently rented with Thrifty. At the rental counter I was told about a $10.99 a day toll tag charge ($43.96 total for 4 days). I declined as I knew the Tolls I would going through would be less than $10 total and would just pay them when the bill came. I was not however told that I should or could use my own toll tag otherwise I would be assessed outrageous fees. I was not told Thrifty would charge $15 for each toll booth I went through if I did not pay their set fee of $10.99. Two weeks after the rental ended I received a bill for $125.99! The total toll charges were only $5.99. That means $120 in fees were assessed. So I did some research online and apparently this is a huge deceptive practice Thrifty does. I found many others with similar complaints. Thrifty was even sued but the state of Florida for scamming people by charging these excessive fee rates. You see, these so-called "fees" for processing is 100% profit. I called my local toll Authority NTTA and they told me that they did not even charge any fees to Thrifty for the tolls. So in my case, the $120 is pure profit they make and the $5.99 toll fee is paid automatically and electronically by Thrifty to NTTA. No human putting in hours for this transaction. Beware, they are ripping people off and it is illegal now at lease in Florida.
I wish I could leave them a lower review. I purchased my car rental through a 3rd party company and ended up having to pay 100% additional (almost an additional $100) for fuel, toll agreement, and additional taxes and fees! I will absolutely never use this company for a car rental again!
I wish there was an option for 0 star. They even don't deserve one star. I have rented more than 100 cars from different car rental companies during the last 10 years. For new year holidays I had to rent a car with thrifty because all other companies didn't have anything available and it was the worst experience ever. Just can say avoid this corrupt company.
At the rental counter in Las Vegas my husband went to pick up our rental. We booked through Expedia.ca. I upgraded our suv and agreed to return the car with a full tank of gas.
During the pick up the service rep had my husband upgrade to a higher price, that in the end was fine, BUT he changed the agreement to "return empty" and pay their price for gas. This was not explained to my husband and as we drove to return the car I had my husband fill the car. $50 or so US dollars. At the return centre the fella noted the tank was full. We were charged $66. US dollars. When we arrived home I called Thrifty at Las Vegas, shared the matter of concern, was told that the bill would be revised as it hadn't been processed. Then I check my credit card and it has been CHARGED the $66. Gas fee. I called back and another service person said No Refund would be given. I messaged Expedia who my Agreement was with and also after several emails no refund. As cash was paid for the gas by the airport and no receipt to show them, they refused what had already been said by the first rep. Thrifty and Expedia should have far better customer service than this. We travel a lot and will now look for better service providers. So disappointed.
