thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

Buying: The photos of the items for sale are taken with an iphone 3 it seems and the search mechanism/filter is useless. The site is not curated well at all. They have too many different market audiences/fashion tastes they're trying to appeal to which is fine but then potential buyers are sifting through a bunch of irrelevant items. It's like going to Ross that's somewhat pricey for a Ross when there's a Marshall's and Nordstrom Rack right next door (ebay and Poshmark seem better alternatives). There's really no way to find out the waist size or fabric look until it gets to your door. An item won't say crepe style or velvet it will say rayon or poly ect. No return shipping label; you have to email customer service for them to send you one. In my case I have 3 dresses, one of which I paid over $70+ for (I assumed it meant extra high quality I was wrong), that do not fit or have design flaws not noticed by the intake team.

Buying: You wait 2-3 months for them to decide if they want to keep or donate your items then find out you do not get paid up front and will get as low as 5% of the sale price once and if the items sell. Read the fine print. If you truly want to help others and aren't interested in selling your items, donate your items to your LOCAL thrift shop please.

Sellers beware
February 12, 2017

Do not send your stuff to this company. Take it to a local consignment shop or donate. They are ripping sellers off.

Best Gently Handled 2nd Thrift ever!
February 12, 2017

I learned about thredUp via FB &, although I had some concerns about not being able to try the clothes on, I went for the gusto & purchased 5 tops, a pair of suede boots & a Liz Claireborne clutch (small purse) in one evening.

I admit, I purchased a couple of the blouses knowing they MIGHT not fit due to the size information given. Yet, upon arrival, even the ones I was concerned about fit with absolutely no problems & looked absolutely stunning with a pair of black jeans & the boots.

The picture was taken yesterday. I'm wearing the paisley blouse that reminds me of the 70's (my favorite years) & which I thought, for sure, would be way to small for me.

Easy Peasy no hassle shopping. Exactly the way I like it.

Thank you ThredUp. I'll be back. :)

I am requesting all my items be returned but not sure that will happen. They are paying me. 55 cents on a sweater I paid $120.00 for 2 yrs ago. Definitely not as honest and fair as they should and could be. Go to clothes mentor, at least you'll get a fair shake. A lesson I wont soon forget.

February 11, 2017

I have been selling on quite a few sites and you make by far the least on Threadup. For each item that they mark up, you make a tiny portion. I have sold similar items on other sites like Mercari and have made atleast double if not triple on the item. The convenience of Threadup was not worth the losses.

Fake, Fake, Fake
February 8, 2017

I purchased what was supposed to be a coach wallet and it turned out more to be like coach credit card holder but more than that it is fake it was made in China it has no number on it for verification but they do not make coach bags in China and it is so difficult to even get in touch with someone at this place to complain I still haven't been able to get in touch with anybody to complain even though I have left a message I had a 40% off coupon so I didn't spend that much money because it was marked down I believe 260 something dollars so that's not the problem I wouldn't purchased it if I had known it was fake but that is on me all I can say is buyer beware

No questions... just looking for a Blog site to tell people about how much of a rip off it is to send your quality items in the THREDUP. They are basically a company based on receiving FREE Quality products from the public and getting rich. People would do much better using the FREE sites like LetGo, OfferUp and the various FACEBOOK selling Apps and pages. I referred a lot of people to the idea but now that I see my payout I need to re-track my referrals!

Extraordinarily bad
February 7, 2017

I too have used this service to clean out my closet for about a year now and have never been so disappointed as this last bag. I sent a Coach leather backpack, amongst a full bag of other things, and they never mentioned under the backpack at all - said it was visibly marked and stained but have no proof aside from a photo that no one can point out the problem areas. It is a 10 year old bag with plenty of life left and a few scuff marks but nothing out of the ordinary. Sounds like some of you have had worse sent to you! It is gone and out of the system they say - probably taken home by one of their cherry pickers to sell on Ebay... Pay out was $12.35 for about 10 items and another 2 consigned for $15 and $18 where I get 15% or $2-$3 each! And this all comes with an $8.99 fee for sending it to them! NEVER again! Better to donate to a women's charitable organization and take the write off

Highway Robbery
February 7, 2017

This scam company's success depends on taking your clothes, paying you next to nothing for them, then marking the clothing up over 1000% to make a profit.

I made less than $6, for 9 items. Sent them new items with tags and in their original garment bags. The clothing was received in December and processed in February.

Sell your clothes yourselves or drop them off with a local thrift store for a tax write off.

I might be one of the lucky ones, but I've had no problem with my thredUP experience. My shopping experience has been great. I'm already a picky shopper so shopping online isn't any different. I'll look through pages and pages of inventory every single day before choosing what to buy. It's great that there are always new items showing up.

So far I've ordered 7 different items on 3 different orders; 3 tops, 1 jacket, 1 skirt, and 2 pairs of shoes. The boxes come within a week or two, the items are folded neatly and even shoes are safely wrapped in extra bubble wrap. The clothes I received were exactly as pictured and I would try them on immediately to see how they fit. I know how inconsistent sizing can be across different brands, so paying attention to the measurements is a little more helpful. Everything fit as expected.

I've returned 1 item because I didn't think it looked that great on me. I used the same box and the free return label it comes with, and dropped it off at the post office. Easy. My credit was processed within the month and I had no problems applying my credit immediately to more purchases.

I'm extremely pleased with all the items I bought and have gotten compliments on all of them! I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the clothes and can definitely say that they were a steal. I spent less on a whole outfit than I have on a new top or jacket at the mall.

I will say it's all about being picky in your purchases, but if your patient enough to file through their inventory, you will stumble upon great finds for a bargain!

So disappointed in this service I wrote the company the following email:

Dear Mr. Marino,

I'm sending this email because as a first time user of your services I have concerns and disappointments that I thought I'd share with you.

I received my first kit and excitedly hand picked, packaged and shipped to thredUP my first polka dot thredUP clean out bag.

Then, I eagerly awaited for my bag to be processed and hear back from you guys. When I finally did hear back I was disappointed to learn that

Only 5 of my items submitted were accepted, the payout for them is only a total of $15.25 upfront without any option to select consignment payment, and the cost to request my other items back is $10.99. Within a weeks time 4 of the 5 items sold. Proof that what I did send over is in demand. Knowing that the total amount that threadUp earned on those 5 items is $96.95 straight profit off of my items that I received less than 15% of is disheartening and I feel ripped off. The prices you charge are not thrift prices.

I also made a purchase of a bathing suit. The size was listed wrong. When I received it, it was visibly a whole different size. I returned it only to receive less than half of what I paid for it.

Though your services seems cool and on trend, I will not be using it again. I rather donate my items to shelters and people in need vs. lining your companies pocket for profit. With me left feeling like I just gave my items to you to make earnings. You've taken my good stuff and literally gave me little or nothing for it. Regrettably, I didn't read any reviews prior to sending my items, but I since have and they are not raving reviews. I'll also chime in with my review of your services. Initially intended to promote this service if the outcome was positive. Though, now I will not be doing that. And, I hope that I will be receiving all of my items back that you didn't not take.

Where did the clothes
February 6, 2017

I sent numerous items. One that I recalled were brand new white jeans with tags that I never saw listed and can't imagine that they would not be picked for sale by thred up. What happened to them? Maybe all items should be listed when received and if rejected should say so.

SELLING: I have used TU for a few years now, but no more! I used to send in bags of decent name brand (not designer) clothes with free shipping and get $30-$60 back. The last two bags I sent in I had to pay $8 shipping on, and now that price has increased too. My last bag had a brand new Lands End kids' coat and several pairs of designer shoes that they accepted - and only paid out $7.36. I guess I'm going back to Ebay.

BUYING: I never got a shipment from TU that didn't have something wrong. It was usually minor - an incorrect item or size - and they would comp the difference instead of replacing it. Now the quality of the items has diminished and they have gotten even lazier with their online descriptions. They are so inaccurate it's ridiculous. Very few measurements and tiny pictures, often with no zoom. It's a total craps shoot. Maybe you will get something nice, but probably you will be disappointed.

I have used ThredUP for over a year. I started out happy but now not so much! I sent in two bags of name brand clothes and finally emailed to see what was taking so long. I was told I "donated my clothes because I didn't specify I would pay $9.99 per bag for processing. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS! If you go to the website it STILL DOES NOT MENTION THIS! So upset. I will never use this dishonest company again

Amazing thrifty site!
February 6, 2017

I love browsing through the pages and pages of name brands. It's so easy for me to look at the brand I KNOW fit me well and to search from there. The prices are reasonable, the clothing beautiful--clean, neat, and if there's a defect of some sort, they always list so. Returning items are no hassle either!

I love ThredUp!

The only number listed is *******676 and it is only an answering machine. When you call and leave your number they never ever ever call back. I sent the moldy clothes back to them and never ever got my account credited. Ordered in November for $252.00. Sent back as soon as I opened the box and had a huge asthma attack December 20 and no credit.

It's true that you can probably get more money for your used clothes in a brick and mortar consignment store, or even on eBay -- but both of those options take a lot more work than thredUP. I love being able to toss everything in a bag and ship it off to thredUP, and they have always been prompt in evaluating my bags and paying me, and sending my clothes back if I requested that (usually I just let them donate -- if something is special enough that I would want it back, I know to sell it through someone else in the first place). Typically I choose to use my funds as store credit, because thredUP has TONS of great clothes for great prices! I've gotten designer dresses, trousers, shirts and jeans for a steal. ThredUP is not the end-all, be-all of thrift or consignment stores, even online, but it does simplify the process and that's great for lazy people like me.
