ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I sent some clothes to Thred UP. They picked six items which all sold. I requested my money and put in my payment information correctly. Then I got a message from the service they apparently use called Stripe that they could not deposit my money into my account. When I emailed them back, they said I had to contact ThredUP. I did so and they never responsed. Finally my 3rd email got some attnetion after a month. However, they continued to give my wrong answers and I tried to clarify. They would not give me a phone number to call. I finally gave up. They owed me $22 but it was too much trouble to continue to pursue. So they sold my clothes and i got $0.
If you send in a bag to sell, it has taken OVER THREE WEEKS and still marked "in transit"! When you email customer service(terribly named), they tell you to chat... with over 5 min delay time?! My stuff will be out of season and I should've WALKED it there from Chicago? Then the stuff they sell and mail for a fee is very wrongly advertised!
Totalled wrinkled lace dress -NOT fixable (even by a dry cleaner) too short, snagged and one thing (that's of course not returnable-when were you going to tell me THAT!)I wouldn't wash my car with(it's cheap polyester and totally different from photo colors)
Do the environment a favor: donate to the poor your used clothes, and get a tax write off -give the poor a job and keep postal service trucks off the streets... OVER three weeks to arrive and be sold?!
Not impressed. I used them before when my kids were very little and maybe i was less picky. Or maybe the quality of their merchandize went straight down, i dont know. Ordered nearly $200 worth of kids clothing. Overall seems like a good deal, i got at least 30 items, many final sales items. However, as the merchandize started to arrive (they ship it in like 6 packages, no kidding), i became more and more dissapointed. Purchased a pair of shoes for my 5 year old that were advertized as size 13. Shoes arrive and they are... infant booties. What? What am i supposed to do with these? Ordered a uniform shirt, a plain navy polo for my son, advertized as nearly new, could be mistaken for new, size 10-12. What arrives is a stretched out husky size polo. Dont get me wrong, there are acceptable good deal items, especially the dresses for my 5 year old. But along with it, you get a lot of junk. Total unusable junk. Mind you, returns suck. They want $2 restocking fee for each item. Ummm really? And you pay shipping back. Awsome. I honestly would have been better off spending $200 on fewer thing at a normal store. Not impressed.
Finding information about how account credits work and finding customer support contact methods are not user friendly. Once I found customer contact and sent a question about my sales not being credited to my account, it has been a week and still no reply.
The first time I purchased a handful of items for my daughter, I was SO excited! It was the first time I had created an account and I received an extra 20% or 30% off of my order. Since then, I've noticed the price of children's clothes has skyrocketed! Every once in a while I will check in and see if there's anything decently priced. Today I was shopping before I logged into my ThredUp account and noticed some baby girl jeans for $7.99 plus 30% off for NEW users. I figured I'd log in to see what discount they were offering return customers. When I logged in, the price jumped from $7.99 to $10.99 and they were offering 20% off. I was appalled. I understand they are a business and need to make money, but to me, that's shady business practice. I won't be purchasing from them again.
Just wanted to say I ordered 3 pairs of boot cut jeans from this site. I received 3 pairs of skinny straight leg jeans. If you want to return you will only get half of what you paid for your items even though mistake was not your fault.
It was my first time selling with ThredUp and I wanted to impress them so I sent in my nicest items. Anthropologie, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Vince, Banana Republic, etc. Many of my items still had tags on. I ended up earning a whopping $47 on 15 items. When I saw what they were offering me, my heart sank. And to get the items back, I would have to PAY THEM to ship them back, losing money instead of earning. They didn't even accept a pair of barely-worn Frye shoes. Who knows what happened to those... probably sent them home with an employee. Most items only paid me pocket change; the majority of my items paid less than $1, though the list price was obviously much, much more. I would have been better off donating to Goodwill and taking the tax write-off. Such a disappointment. Will never sell here again. I have this $47 credit which makes me sick to look at, knowing I once had all those beautiful clothes.
Don't waste your time if you think you're going to make any money.
I honestly feel like I should've just thrown my stuff away instead of Thred Up insulting me with a ridiculous payout of $0 for a brand new (never used) Coach wristlet (which they had listed as gently used)! Then charging $10 to return clothing they don't like, so I end up making ZERO dollars. I could've thrown it in the garbage and felt better about it - rather than feeling like I got scammed!
THIS COMPANY IS CROOKED! LIARS, DECEIVERS, CHEATERS! I HOPE THEY GET SUED FOR ALL THE THINGS THEY HAVE BEEN DOING TO CUSTOMERS. IF YOU HAVE BEEN A VICTIM OF THREDUP WHETHER IT BE THEY CHEATED YOU ON YOUR "BAG," THEY SENT YOU DAMAGED CLOTHING OR ITEMS, THEY WILL NOT ISSUE YOU A REFUND OR LOST YOUR PACKAGE - PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO CONTACT THE FTC - FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION! THE MORE COMPLAINTS THEY GET, THE BETTER! THE FTC CAN TAKE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST THREDUP IF THEY GET ENOUGH COMPLAINTS!
FTC *******357
YOU CAN ALSO REPORT THEM TO THE BBB - BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU (see website)
THIS COMPANY IS INVOLVED IN FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY. THEY (OR THEIR EMPLOYEES) ARE STEALING FROM CONSUMERS... WHETHER IT BE BY SENDING DAMAGED ITEMS & CHARGING A RETURN SHIPPING, "STEALING" ITEMS FROM CUSTOMER "BAGS" & NOT POSTING THE ITEMS TO THE THREDUP WEBSITE FOR SALE (ALL ITEMS NOT USED BY THREDUP SHOULD BE AUTOMATICALLY RETURNED TO CUSTOMERS, THAT SHOULD BE THE *ONLY* OPTION TO AVOID THEFT!). THREDUP ALSO LOSES CUSTOMER RETURN PACKAGES/ITEMS & WILL NOT REFUND THE MONEY FOR THOSE ITEMS. IN ADDITION TO THIS, THEY PURPOSELY DO NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS WITH THESE TYPES OF ISSUES. THEY WILL NOT RESPOND TO A CHAT INITIATED BY A CUSTOMER IF THEY DO NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH YOU, AND THEY WILL "END A CHAT" WHENEVER THEY FEEL LIKE IT - ESPECIALLY IF THEY DO NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH YOU! ABSOLUTELY NO ACCOUNTABILITY! I HAVE PROOF THAT THEY AVOID MY COMMUNICATION INTENTIONALLY AS I SENT THEM A CHAT ASKING FOR A SUPERVISOR & THEY IGNORED ME MEANWHILE AT THE SAME TIME A FRIEND OF MINE SENT A CHAT AND THEY RESPONDED TO THEM WITHIN 15MIN... STILL NOT RESPONDING TO ME! I HAVE PROOF, I TOOK SCREENSHOTS. THEY LOST MY RETURN PACKAGE & WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT! THIS COMPANY HAS SOME OF THE MOST SORRY, CROOKED, UNTRUSTWORTHY & INCOMPETENT EMPLOYEES OF ANY COMPANY I'VE DONE BUSINESS WITH! THEY GET AWAY WITH MISTREATING & STEALING FROM CONSUMERS AS THERE IS NO ACCOUNTABILITY NOR MONITORING OF THEIR BEHAVIOR IN WAREHOUSE, VIA CHAT & EMAIL. I PRAY A LARGE LAWSUIT IS BROUGHT AGAINST THEM, IT SEEMS THIS WILL BE THE ONLY WAY THEY ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE & START TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT GOES ON WITHIN THE COMPANY.
On the plus side I can find Coach purses in great condition for a fraction of the price. But the negatives... oh the negatives. My first order, many years ago I will admit, included a shirt that had a few red sequins on it. The sequins were extremely faded. Certainly not "like new" as described. Fast forward to a couple months ago. I ordered several things for my toddler for the upcoming summer. One item was an unbranded pink sunhat. I paid $2.99 and the estimated retail was $17. I received it, liked it, and decided to look at the tag inside. I said Greenbrier International. That's right kiddos. As many people know that means the item came from the Dollar Tree. I was livid but at least I hadn't paid their $17 retail. Today I decided to look at some shoes. I found a pair of unbranded pink flip flops. They looked familiar so I loaded them up. They are an exact pair that I have owned for at least five years that I bought from, you guessed it, the Dollar Tree! Stay clear of the "unbranded" items and use a little common sense and I guess shopping on here will be alright. Just be careful.
My clean up bag included a brand new pair of shoes from Sole Society, never worn, in original box and they were rejected. I took pictures of all the items I sent in. Took them over a month to evaluate my items once they were sent. I sent in 13 pair of shoes and only 8 were accepted. Three of the items rejected had never been worn and the items they accepted had been used.
I ordered a coach purse and received a Walmart purse for $70! The picture was not close to what was sent.
First, the measuring and listing they do is way off. Measurements were inaccurate, high waist pants were listed as "super low" etc.
Second. You will only get a few pennies credit for what you send in.
Third, the clothes you buy are REALLY used. "Mistake for new" is more like a "fair" condition.
Overall, not worth the hassle.
I sent a clean out bag in (as I have done before), received an acknowledgment that it was being processed. After a few weeks go by a receive a thank you for your donation from thredup. I am shocked by this as some of the items included in my clean out bag were brand named with tags. I sent an email to their customer service only to be told that there was nothing that could be done. I'm very upset over this and will not recommend or use thredup again.

I was excited when they accepted all the items in the bag I sent, but they're only giving me a few cents to a couple dollars per item... and that's still only if everything sells. The photos they took are terrible too, so I'll be surprised if it all sells. Several items sold 30+ days ago, and I still have not gotten any money back for them. 8 sold items and I have $. 74 in my account!
I shop a lot of "pre-owned clothing" sites and my sisters and I recently tried Thredup. The prices are higher than the other "pre-owned clothing" sites I shop, but I was hoping since the items were coming from a business and not a "home seller" the items would be as described, so it'd be worth the extra cost.
Everything I purchased was supposedly "excellent condition/like new" yet 6 out of the 8 items I purchased definitely looked worn, had piling, were faded, had an undone hem, and one had missing sequins.
I personally wouldn't even consider these items to be in "great" used condition, so I was super bummed to pay so much for stuff that wasnt even close to "like new".
My sister ordered 11 items (and also only purchased items that were excellent/like new) and 7 of her 11 items were in bad condition, two had actual holes in the body of the shirts, and a hoodie she got had a completely undone hem on the sleeve (along with others having piling, wash wear and fading). Some of her items were final sale (but were still supposed to be "like new"). What a disappointment.
We will never buy from here again. I'd rather take the chance trusting a home seller, rather than buying from a company that is dishonest about the condition of the clothing. $200 down the drain for us. There is a reason there are only 2 photos of all of the clothing and no close ups. Don't believe the descriptions. :(
I think they play game s like changing the price as you put the item in your cart. OR all of sudden I will not be able to FIND a item on to see them relist it more expensive.
Recent event and THEY never reached out to me... ever.
I try to re bu becasien one item was not suppose to orde rit an they just completly igore me and than sometimes i will save clothing that like 7.99 only to ome back and they put a marked down of 38.00 dollars when it was alway 7.99... for a used skirt.\
I thought used clothing was suppose to help the earth but at this point i can get brand new for a few extrea dollars and know the item is going to be as such.
While most the stuff i have order has be fairly clean some of the condition just flat out lie.
Yeah ill stick to other consignment shops. I hope threadup will understand what customer service is one day.
Communication saves lives... so stay "straight up" thredup: roll eyes:
I have been shopping/selling with Thredup for a lil while now and have come to the conclusion about a few things:
1: Don't ever buy white shirts. Even the "newish" ones have a bit of ring around the collar and/or deodorant stains. Gross.
2: Pay the $10.99 to have your unaccepted items sent back to you. It creates accountability on their part. I have sent many things I thought for sure would be accepted and am suspicious.
3. Never buy items listed as slightly worn. Slight is an understatement. Very worn and often dirty.
4. The way they do business, present, and package items has improved immensely over the years. I believe they will continue to improve.
I have a few issues with a Threadup. First I sent a bag of really nice items and according to tracking it was received January 2. According to their website things are gone through and uploaded within two weeks, no such luck it's still sitting waiting to be gone through. According to customer service they're very busy at this time False advertising. I sent a return in over three weeks ago and have still yet to credit my account. I am much more satisfied with Swap.com
Thredup is terrible... Still have not received payout for clothing... Don't do business with this company they're horrible... You would come out better by giving your clothing away... 200.00 dollars worth of clothing... When they do decide to payout. I will receive, (4.24)... Stay away from this place.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
