TaxAct Sucks
March 23, 2022

I selected the FREE federal return option with the $39.95 state option believing I would be charged $39.95. But when it was time for the payment page my total was $136 and change. I was never informed of the Protection Plus package that I was charged for. BAIT AND SWITCH! Based on this TaxAct has lost a long time customer dating back to 2008.

Never again
March 11, 2022

Wish I had seen this site before I purchased. I need to file an Initial/Final return for a Grantor Trust. I saw TA recommended on some other sites because they have a product specifically titled "Trust and Estate." I bought the Download version. I don't really have the energy to go into everything that was bad about it, but the interview process was not very intuitive, if I clicked for Help I got a very basic sentence or 2 and a link to the IRS Instructions. I input a 1099INT that was mostly IRD, I feel like there should be a related Statement to explain where the "missing" interest is being reported but I could never find one in the Forms and the Interview did not ask. Program shuts down at random, sometimes it comes back and offers to continue where you left, sometimes not. And, last straw, I got up this morning and opened the program to find that all the work I had done to that point was gone, tried a Restore from Backup option and it said backup was unreadable. So I'll be doing the return all over again, but not with this POS. Ordering TurboTax Business today.

BAIT AND SWITCH!
March 2, 2022

Stay away, very deceitful. Did an Online Premier return $69.95, spent 5 hours finalizing it only to find out they automatically signed me up for a $124.95 All-inclusive package. When you first start they offer an inclusive package, then supposedly, there is a button to decline. Well I never seen a button and according to customer service a lot of people don't. So you would think that they could change it back to Premier, nothing has been paid or filed. NOPE, I would have to start a whole new return! That is totally unacceptable, deceitful and definently BAIT AND SWITCH.

TaxAct switched the type of tax preparation plan I was using through them because I sold my home. There was absolutely no difference nor any screens asking me about my home sale yet they charged me for the more expensive product. I called customer service three times and reps were unable to help. One rep kept yawning and talked a mile a minute. Warning, TaxAct will try to sell other products to you at the end and you need to be careful what you click on because they will switch the phrasing as you click through saying "no thanks." Stay away from TaxAct.

Last time i ever use tax act. I agreed to a 40 dollar charge for direct deposit. They charged me $109 and sent me a paper check. I've used tax act for years but this is just uncalled for. I guess its time to use turbo tax. All good things never last.

Less known but solid income tax program
February 13, 2022

I moved to TaxAct based on its positive reviews after having a bad experience with TurboTax's handling of a rental property sale. See my review on this site.

TaxAct provided a similar data entry experience as Turbo Tax, although the detail differences took a few minutes to adapt to.

TA capably handled W2 and 1099 inputs, and was thorough with rental property expense categories. I had no trouble with the real estate sale data entry.

They have very few financial firms on their download list, so lots of data entry for me.

TA appears to be more rigorous than TurboTax in their use of every line in the applicable tax forms. This is good for finding every tax deduction opportunity. It does mean more reading lines in forms that turn out to be unnecessary.

Overall a good experience. I intend to use TaxAct next year.

Software Connection
February 10, 2022

The software is unbearable, it will not connect and allow for you to enter your information. The links are consistently slow or broken and you have to keep reconnecting. It will take forever to complete my tax returns.

I used TurboTax and TaxAct to compare and see what my full refund would be. TaxAct said I did not qualify for any of the child tax act credit even though I had a child in mid 2021 and the stimulus as well. TaxAct is a waste of time and money they WILL NOT get you your best refund.

DO NOT use tax act they charged me $54.95 to pay for my $24.95 fee for TaxACT
Software if I did agree to it it was by mistake however if I understood clearly I would have never agreed to pay $54.95 for a $24.95 fee because it was to be taken out of my return this is totally ridiculous and dishonest and not right. I've been using text act for years and I've never experienced this because of this experience I will no longer use them just beware! FYI I contacted tax act twiceon January 30th 2022 at approximately 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and neither representative good help me this was within 2 hours of me doing my return again if I would have known they were going to charge me $54.95 for the tax act fee $ I would have paid the $24.95 old to TaxACT out of my own pocket with a credit card I would have give them a zero rating but the rating review would not offer me that option it's hardly worth my time to do this for you cuz I don't believe anything is going to be done again do not use tax act I work too hard for my money to be getting ripped off by these people

TaxAct got top reviews on Google. So I spent hours doing my simple, single, return for FREE, but it would not let me state that N. H. has no income tax so impossible to proceed to the 'submit Federal return' button. Then it changed my standard deduction to itemized deductions that I could not uncheck, which made me now OWE $$. The 'Back" button is useless, you're stuck on a page that requires payment. NEVER USE TAXACT!

Not FREE
January 25, 2022

It states that you can filed your state taxes through e-file for free and then it states at the very end you will need to pay to file your state taxes. Which is it? I wish I had gone with another company I have never had this issue in the last 2 years of working with them. NO other companies charge you for basic filing its a HUGE rip off.
This is what they have on their site:
With free e-file and direct deposit, you'll get your state refund the fastest way possible and be notified when your return has been processed.

All you need to do to complete your guaranteed accurate state return is answer a few questions. Do you want to complete your Arizona return?

Add your state for only $39.95 more. Pay when you file. Prices are determined at time of filing and subject to change.

What is "2020 Tax Return Online All Inclusive" for $134.95? I started with deluxe! Now being charged for something I cannot even find on Google! It is nowhere located in their product offerings... A Google search returns nothing... I was expecting to pay the deluxe charge and when I was done, actually I could get by with the free since I don't need many forms. All Inclusive? WTH?

Do NOT use TaxAct
June 16, 2021

We've used TaxAct for several years. This year, we owed over 7K on our Federal taxes and opted to pay by credit card, all of which is handled by the TaxAct site when you file your return. We completed the filing and the payment. When we printed our return and forms, they said we had submitted our payment. Nothing ever showed up on the credit card; it was never charged. Now the TaxAct site says we 'elected to pay at a later date.' This is absolutely NOT true. We will now have to pay a PENALTY because of this screwup, and TaxAct refuses to take any responsibility. And it is almost impossible to contact them to speak with a representative to try to fix the problem. In short, AVOID TAXACT!

Software issues
June 2, 2021

2020 they changed their software to the not so good. Couldn't e-file my taxes had to mail them in and was told all I had to do is mail in the attachment that was required. I was giving the run around for 3 hours and charged for other services that wasted that departments time and mine then had to be transferred back to taxact customer service to be told I don't know what to do,,, (wow)... I've been doing taxes with taxact from 2015 and was told for not being satisfied that they would refund $80, but that didn't happen. They did tell me that they had trouble placing the refund and I may have to call back. Called back talked to a rude person named Chris and then he hung up on me and was not given a chance to do the survey at the end of call! Go figure I guess Chris didn't what me to do the survey. I guess I'll wait for his manager to call me?

In last February 7, in TaxAct home page the TaxAct Premire marked as $34.95. I started with TaxAct on line on the same day Feb 7,2021, and I printed TaxAct screen which shown the price $34.95. After start my 2020 tax return with TaxAct I verified the price it was $34.95. But Later when I tried to file the return the TaxAct charged me $64.95. I called support I was told the price was changed. This is not acceptable behavior. TaxAct using lower price got customer started using the TaxAct prepare the Tax return. When customer ready to file the tax return the customer was forced to pay high price in my case I was forced to pay twice the original price.

Night of the deadline trying to help my father file his taxes and apparently the site is too busy to even get on. So I call customer support and am told the volume is too high and hung up on. Kind of weird to have a site built for one purpose, yet it cannot even do that one task.

Bait-n-Switch
May 10, 2021

I had been using TaxAct for more than 6 years. I always have had good experiences until this year. I had 2 problems, neither has been resolved. The first is more of an IRS issue where I had to file an amended return and the IRS has yet to even acknowledge it so what they think I owe is very different than what I really owe. However, TaxAct's "expert" Audit Protection Service didn't even understand the IRS rules around one of the line items (I actually educated them on the topic by pointing them to an IRS publication!). They (or I should say, we) crafted a letter to the IRS for follow-up; I'm not sure when it will be acknowledged. The second is a true bait-n-switch on their Refer-A-Friend program. The terms that are currently stated on their website are very clear: "A 'new' TaxAct customer refers to anyone who did not file with TaxAct in the previous tax year." With that being said, the PREVIOUS year refers to 2019. I referred my son this year to file his 2020 taxes; he did file with TaxAct in 2018 and previous years but filed them himself in 2019. After following up with TaxAct since they never sent the referral bonus, I received an email from Amanda in their Support Department and I quote, "Unfortunately the referral reward was declined as it was determined the referred friend has already been a TaxAct customer in 2018, 2017 and prior years. The purpose of the Refer-A-Friend program is to recruit new customers who have never heard of TaxAct or who have never used our services, that includes last year, but not limited to the year prior. I will put in a request to review the language used on our help pages to indicate a more accurate description of eligibility for the new customers recruited with the Refer-A-Friend program." Regardless of what they think is the Refer-A-Friend "purpose", the terms that are CURRENTLY stated on their website are very clear and should be honored. Amanda chose not to honor them and ignored further follow-up attempts; classic bait-switch. I am definitely done with TaxAct.
