Be weary of this Company
February 16, 2022

I have Self for over 4 years and never had a problem with any illegal transactions. For two months I've had over $500 worth of transactions on my Self Card called Self Fraud and they denied my claim. Therefore over $500 was stolen from me and they will not do anything about it. They claim to have a "Platinum Fraud Protection" but obviously that's misleading and False. Be weary these folks are not for their card holders. They will allow people to steal your money and will not do anything about it. Our relationship was Flawless until I learned that they will not protect my investment. Seems like they are in on these fraudulent transactions to nothing about it. My scores only went up maybe 10-15 point by owning this card.

You will pay more than 30% interest. You can't pay it earlier. Will not affect much on score on timely payment.

I stared using this as a savings account. I reached the amount I wanted to get I was tempted to just pull the money out but they keep sending me messages to get the self credit card so I can improve my credit score. I don't have bad credit I just don't have credit built yet, so I said why not. I used the card without issues, one night I was carjacked and they stole everything including this credit card I called them to cancel my card righ away. There is no one working after hours in the event this happens other banks have people working throughout the late hours in the event you lose you card self does not. I emailed them and called them the hold times are very long. I decided this is not a secure card and not for me. I closed out my account I asked for them to deposit the money into my account since it was linked to the self account that is how they would take out most of my payments. They said they couldn't do that, so they mailed me a check. The check bounced because self put a stop payment on the check I have been attempting to figure out why this happened and I am being told it's being looked into. It's been days and I have no update. This card is not worth the hassle.

Yes I was able to increase my credit score, However once I finished without a missed payment I got offers from other credit card companies for unsecured lines of credit I closed my account and wanted my $600 back it took weeks to get and once I closed my account they decimated my credit score I went from a score of 744 to 623 in less then two weeks with zero issues against my credit no late payments no outstanding bills. Don't know how they did it but it was all them, I got a $10,000 credit limit on one card and have three others with similar amounts, don't do it to yourself there are other ways to better your credit try those and you won't be as disappointed as I was with SELF.INC

Self.inc holds onto your money WAY TOO LONG
December 14, 2021

After you pay off your account and close it. It takes a half of a month for them to get around to get your money back to you.

Ten to Fourteen business days otherwise known as two weeks. Then to see them try and explain away it is pathetic.

This isn't the 1800s where you have to load up my gold on horseback and ship it across the wild untamed plains of America. Where train and stage coach robbers hold up your loot. Or you are attacked and killed by wild Apaches and taken out.

This is modern day America. It should be a matter of days to get my money. Not two weeks just to transfer my money then another 3 days to get it deposited into my account.

They are only holding your money to make interest off of it. That is it. Completely unethical and disgusting practice. I've never had to wait two weeks just to get my money. EVER.

I will not be using them again.

Just a rip-off
December 9, 2021

They make it seem like your paying towards a loan you get once paid off but honestly the loan is the credit card they give you and just keeps moving the money over with the increases on the card they don't make it seem like it but that's what it really is your loan is the credit card they give with you paying fees to them so once paid in full don't expect to get the amount of the loan you choose if you have a balance on the card, it's a ripoff to me I'm sorry I let myself do this for 2 years, so you are paying them interest even if you card balance is 0 on your card your paying more and they are making money this was a crock of DO NOT USE SELF! Warning

Scam!
October 26, 2021

They took a $100 deposit for a credit card that took months to come and when it did it did not work. Although I was not able to use the card they continued to take a $25 monthly payment out of my account automatically. When I asked them to close the account it did not happen and I still have not gotten my $100 security deposit back. It has been months. I also set up an account to build credit for $250. Once I reach that limit they continued to take money out of my account automatically and when I was finally able to get a response from customer service they sent me a check for $167. Self has cheated me out of hundreds!

My review of this card would not have been poor until they locked my card without notice. Proceeded to ask for very personal information to verify who I am over a year later which I did not feel comfortable with at all. They should know who I am and be able to confirm my identity via verbal personal information, just like major banks, not by requesting copies of documents that could be used to fake my identity. As a result, my account was closed. I was disappointed at first but they did me a favor. Do not get this card. There are so many better options available.

Antiquated Technology
October 7, 2021

Great Service but technology is stuck in the 20th century. I have a self loan and a self credit card to build my credit. Both are set in autopay. On my Self credit card I charge $50.00 a month for my Fico service. The self card has a 300.00 deposit. It is set to autopay from my debit card from the bank. I had bank fraud and got a new card, forgot to update self. They sent an email, but who can really read all of today's emails? They could have sent a text and in two clicks I could have fixed it. Instead I missed it and they gave me a late pay on my credit and dropped it 50 points despite my 300.00 deposit on the card. Anyway, great service to build your credit if they would update their antiquated technology.

Stay away from Self. Their customer service is not good. The credit score they report is inaccurate. The app is broken which you can see in the picture. My score has improved with every other credit score provider including experian, credit karma, and my bank (who uses Fico), but has gone down with Self. Every attempt to discuss these issues with customer service has resulted in the exact same robotic response explaining that they use vantagescore 3.0 to produce credit scores. The problem is that they give incorrect vantage scores which I verified with 3 other vendors. Now, after reading other poor reviews, I'm becoming worried about what else is in store for me once I exit the program. Yikes

Fraud potential
September 15, 2021

This company is not careful enough to help combat fraud. Their procedures and policies allow for fraud to occur. After several recent attempts to address this issue - the companies response was abysmal. This company should be shut down.

Ok at first
July 8, 2021

It was ok at first. Then I missed an automatic payment and they charged me a $15 return check fee. For a debit card. What a ridiculous way to make money off of me. I cancelled. Not to mention, in the 3 months since I started my credit has gone down 5 points.

New & love itttt
July 8, 2021

I wrote a review last month that I can't find so I can update. I said that applying for them made my credit score lower 44 points but it turns out it was something else. I haven't even made my first payment yet (due the 8th) and my credit score went up 68 points! I know it won't be this much every month but this really excites me. As long as they report monthly like they say they so, I won't have any complaints!

Everything was great until the actual pay out. Self pulls your credit limit increases from your loan. I did the 12 month plan and used my cc for emergency purchases and my utilization was close to maxing out. My pay was supposed to be $539 and I only received $50 and some change. Later to be told that the pay out was used as the total deposit for my cc. Being that I only received $50 and some change I'm thinking the other $$ would pay off my cc balance which I had no problem but nope. It's held as a security deposit. But was told if my balance was at $0 at the time I would have received the full amount. I'm really upset because 1. I was counting on that pay & 2. The pay out didn't even cover the funds used for my cc. So not only do I have a balance of $435 but I have a credit limit of $450 that's originally my money. I am very dissatisfied in Self.

SELF SUCKS
June 23, 2021

Self is great if you have no credit history but as someone with established credit their card screwed me over. They also have NO customer service line if you have an issue you have to send a little message through their website. Don't offer me a card that has ONLY $150 credit limit and an annual fee of $25 dollars like what the heck I have cards with limits of $1,000-$3,000 with NO annual fee. ALL AND ALL I HATE SELF

At first, this seemed like a good plan and a good company. My credit score did improve significantly, *when* I financed the loan. Accepting the Visa Secure card just gave me headaches. Yes, I used the card, and paid in full each month. I was given a higher available credit. Yes, I used it. When I submitted a payment for the full amount owed, they would not process it as "future" payments would not be accepted. I had an automatic payment set for $48 a month, all went well with no delay on that. After I tried to submit payments unsuccessfully, I would get the email that my utilization was above 30%. No other credit card has ever not accepted a payment anytime during any month AND they usually have 24/7 customer service live; at least in my experience. This company tries to come off as Robin Hood, but, then, I hate to be cynical, they are in the same bed with predatory lenders - get folks when they are down. They are part of the cyclical industry. No one wants to go through difficult times financially. For those of us who want to take responsibility and overcome whatever life threw in their way, this company is out to exploit us. I am a teacher and a single mom. I absolutely need my credit score up to protect my children and provide for them when I need to be approved for a lease, mortgage, or car loan. With Self, I saw my score go up 150 points, then (surprise surprise) drop 30 and stay stagnant.

This company is a joke. Been with them for 2 years and trying to close my account. Paid off my balance and payment cleared my account. However this unethical company has still not posted my payment 6 days later. Use them to build up your credit then leave. Do NOT transfer your money to their pathetic secured Visa card. They'll never offer to unsecure, they never give you a CLI, and they'll charge you 22% for screwing you over.
