The company's reputation is significantly marred by widespread customer dissatisfaction, particularly concerning its subscription model and customer service. Many users report unauthorized charges, difficulties in canceling subscriptions, and a lack of responsive support, leading to perceptions of deceptive practices. While some customers acknowledge the potential value of the service for avid readers, these positives are overshadowed by frustrations with the platform's functionality and the quality of customer interactions. Overall, the feedback indicates a pressing need for improved communication and more transparent billing practices to restore customer trust.

Couldn't believe it when I you d out I didn't own the books/audiobooks and could only read/listen asking as I continue my monthly subscription.
They have pushed be packing to trusty Amazon.
I got a free three month trial membership and had paid for a month membership fee, only to realize I didn't actually own any of the books I had purchased. I need to keep paying monthly to access my paid books and other contents on Scribd. Not to mention some books on Scribd they don't actually own because they allow others to upload and through membership they let you "purchase" others's materials with your monthly credits. I didn't know until the third month I couldn't access to one paid book and contact Customer Services. Absolutely discussing!
Also the App was designed such a way that it's difficult to manage. There's no confirmation language once you click or accidental click it would go immediately to your monthly credits. Examples like it prompts to one click "purchased" then you can't find it on your App, instead called something like "Manage your offsite content" or "Stored content"... and you could "purchase" the same book more than once...
I always wonder why I can't find "Purchased" tab neither my App and account.
Streaming not always easy. The UI and layout contents are all over the place.
You need to pay monthly in order to access your materials and you don't actually own them even you have paid every month... Big trap.
The site also is misleading. Never mentions those terms. When I signed up it was like 3 reading book and 1 audio book each month, credit can roll over. I wish I took a screenshot or something. It doesn't help, those terms are revealed when you go to FAQs or trouble shooting and they're slightly mentioned.
I cancelled this account before the free trial ended and they still proceeded to charge my credit card. It took me three emails to get a reply. Although they claimed to give me a refund, they claimed that they never received my cancellation (I received an email confirming my cancellation) and that I had continued to use the account (another bold-faced lie). They claimed to give me a refund, but we will see if it comes to fruition.
Bottom line, avoid giving this company your credit card information, as they will proceed to charge it even after you've cancelled the account.
Hi Will. I've sent you a message last week requesting for your information to further assist you with your refund. Please email us at [email protected] and reply here with your ticket number. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
During the free month and for a few months after I was able to download many useful pdfs'in math and physics. I just had to email them a few times at one point and nag them for a suff. Answer, but it could have been partly because they needed more info than I originally gave. As far as I know canceling worked fine too, no more charges. I'm just a bit dismayed because I was thinking of joining again and cost when from 4.99 to 8.99 per month. So I might not join.
This company kept charging my debit card 7 times, once for $8.99 each month. I only wanted one month of the subscription and have never received any invoices or bills from Scribd regarding the six extra monthly charges. I want a refund for the six months of monthly charges!
Hey Adam. We sent you a message last week for additional information to assist you with the issue you're having with this textbook and your computer. Please email us at [email protected] and we'll be able to further assist you. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
If it's any comfort, many credit card companies are on to this and will reverse the charge with a minimum of effort. Mine did...
Scridb when asked, Are authors paid when I read premium membership content? They say "YES! Of course!" This is a lie! This is so sad for the hard-working authors. Please send Scribd a notice that they are not helping America, or any author in our world. They stole our book. We are lucky enough to get help from our lawyer, but there are many more authors out there that do not even know Scribd is letting people. On Scribd's site upload these books, to let members download them. Shame on you Scribd, the world works in balance, and it will come back to you.
Hi Nancy. We ensure our authors can continue doing what they love and write great books for our readers to enjoy by making sure they're compensated when their work is part of the premium membership service. Scribd has deals with our authors and publishing partners concerning payment for all the membership content. Basically, every time you read a title thats in the program we pay the author the full price of their work! Revenue that Scribd earns from monthly membership fees is paid to the original publishers or authors of the included titles based on the agreements we have with them every time you read their work on Scribd! If you have additional questions and /or concerns, please email us at [email protected] or refer to our FAQ page link here: https://support.scribd.com/hc/en-us/articles/210129306-How-do-authors-benefit-from-Scribd-s-premium-membership-program- Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
Downloaded a textbook to my computer and everything worked fine. After about a month when I no longer needed the membership I canceled. The textbook is now "corrupt," I can't delete it or open it. THIS WEBSITE IS A SCAM. Pretty sure I downloaded a virus on my brand new computer using this service. I wouldn't trust downloading anything from this scammy site
Hey Audrey. We sent you a message last week for additional information to assist you with the issue you're having with this textbook and your computer. Please email us at [email protected] and we'll be able to further assist you. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
Sick to my stomach to see all the reviews on here. I am still being charged after canceling my monthly membership after the first month. I was thinking that it was an honest mistake but NO seems to happen to most people. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BUSINESS. I am hoping that the reply and refund me though it seems like they leave customers hanging.
Hey Christina. We sent you a message last week for additional information to locate your account. Please email us at [email protected] and we'll be able to further assist you. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
These people do not care about their users. They would rather harp off of your misfortune than to help you. They thrive off of people forgetting to cancel their membership (like many other subscription services), and apparently still charge your card even after you "think" you've cancelled. An ethical company would shoot you and email saying "HEY, YOUR FREE SUBSCRIPTION IS ABOUT TO END AND WE ARE ABOUT TO CHARGE YOU". Nah, that's too much of a courtesy. They keep RADIO SILENT so that you don't know that you are being charged. Good companies like apple music will send you monthly receipts saying that they've charged you so that you are AWARE and can cancel if need be. The only thing that is worthy is that each month you get 3 free books and 1 free audiobook, so even if you've been charged unknowingly you can still use your books right? WRONG. THEY TAKE AWAY THOSE BOOK CREDITS. SO YOU HAVE NOTHING TO SHOW FOR THEY MONEY THEY STOLE FROM YOU. TRASH. DON'T USE THIS SITE.
Hi Monique,
You can cancel your free trial subscription's renewal at any time. You'll still receive your full 30 days, but will not be billed after that. Once your trial time ends, your free Scribd account will remain active, but you will no longer be able to view any of our premium content (whether it was saved to your device or otherwise). You'll still have access to your personalized profile and Scribd's vibrant community of readers though! You can always purchase a new subscription any time to restore access to the full breadth of Scribd's catalog. If you do not cancel your subscription before the end of the trial period, your credit card or whichever payment method you used on your account will be billed automatically for the coming month. You can still cancel future payments: when you cancel your paid subscription we'll ensure it remains active until the end of the current month that you've paid for, but will not bill you again.
When it comes to unlimited books, we have a couple of different options for folks to explore - "Scribd Selects" and our regular unlimited reads (all 150,000 of them!). Both options are completely free and unlimited to our members - no Monthly Credits required!
Scribd is similar to other streaming services, or a public library for example where you pay a flat fee each month to gain access to thousands of titles - but you don't actually own the content once you leave or have access to it without a membership for the same reasons.
I hope this helps to clear things up. Please email us at [email protected] if you have additional concern and/or feedback. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
I opted for a 30-day free trial on scribd and later on realised by reading here that I made a big mistake by providing them my card information. I subscribed on 4-sep-2017 and at around 4:11 AM they drawed and credited $1 from my account. Later on I read reviews here and realized that its a big scam. I canceled my subscription but it still says that "Your membership was cancelled on 9/5/17 and will end on 10/4/17." I tried deleting my account but it says that I have an active subscription and I cannot delete until it expires. I have sent them a mail requesting them to delete my account and they reverted back with a mail stating a ticket number *******. I request scribd to deactivate my account and delete my card details ASAP.
Hi Nimish. Thanks for providing your ticket number and I've responded to your account concerns. If you have additional questions, please reply to the email. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
The site will present you with useful documents you are looking for, and blur it right where you need it. Then ask for your facebook login. Then ask for your credit card. Etc. It is a constantly escalating carrot and stick game and I will never give this company money because of how slimy they are with their cost.
Hi Jessy. We're a membership service where for one flat monthly fee you get your choice of 3 Ebooks and 1 audiobook per month, with additional access to our completely unlimited catalog of Scribd Selects and other titles. That means unlimited access to over 155,000 ebooks, articles and audiobooks! While not all of our catalog is unlimited, we're confident you'll find something you'd like to read with us. If you want to dip your toes into a new book, or just get to know us a little better we offer a free trial here: https://www.scribd.com/subscribe. Anyone is welcome to sign up and start reading! If you have any other comments or questions, feel free to email us at [email protected]. Thanks! -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
I contacted Scribd and a representative returned my message saying he would refund the most recent billing. I hope he did that. Perhaps they are trying to clean up their practices. I would recommend if you do any "free trials" that you are careful to keep track and cancel when you need too.
Seems to be the common theme with this site.
My account went into over draft today, checked it out! Again Scribd! For the fifth month in a row even though multiple requests have been sent to stop.
It's a cool 12$ as it comes out in Australian dollarydoos.
Have finally reported to my bank, and considering it falls under Australian banking laws they follow up on your behalf (which is nice). So the banks legal representative will be getting in contact with Scribd. But I do feel for all the others out there who have to follow up and deal with an unresponsive, thieving company.
What a shame could have had some potential!
Certainly, do not recommend this company! Keep that credit card clear of this corruption!
Terrible. Kept taking money off my account even when I cancelled the membership, infact I wasn't even a member yet. Took money of my account twice. Horrible horrible horrible. Would not recommend to anyone.
Hey Kishalya. We sent you a message last week for additional information to locate your account. Please email us at [email protected] and we'll be able to further assist you. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
I joined scribd.com for trial in Dec 27,2016. After i cancelled may payment card and membership, they continuously charge money about $10 every month.
They started charging about $10 in Jan. 25,2017 and it continued to Jun. 25 2017.
What the F*CK this site is. Why they do this to me without any notification?
After writing a letter to *******@scribd..., they refunded about $10 (max 1 month bill)
Already paid, but refused to refund more.
Hi Rich. I sent you a private message last week and have yet to hear back. Additional information was requested in order to locate your account and issue any refunds. Please respond with requested information. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
Scribd used to be unlimited and now it isn't. That part I could live with but the new app is clumsy and difficult to filter--you often end up with some BS an individual is hawking as a 'book'--nothing from an actual publisher. The audiobooks get mixed in and you think you found a book you like but, no--it's only the audio version. Amazon Unlimited is far superior, and BookBub emails me books every day that I can buy for. 99-2.99 of authors and best sellers.
TERRIBLE WEBSITE.
Keeps charging you despite you trying to cancel because their website is so confusing to use.
If I could, I would put zero stars. I WANT A REFUND.
Hi there. I sent you a private message last week and have yet to hear back. Additional information was requested in order to locate your account and issue any refunds. Please respond with requested information. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
Scribd has withdrawn funds from my account without permission for 7 months now. I have sent them 3 "Support Tickets" and they appeared as if they were trying to be helpful, but they have not helped me whatsoever. I am furious and sick and tired of this business with their terrible customer support and business practices. Scribd, you should be ashamed of yourself. You, as a company, know what you're doing and you are awful people for letting is go on like this for so many people.
Hi Joseph, we sent an email last week requiring further information to locate your account. Once we are able to locate the account, we will be able to further assist you with any refunds. Thanks! -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
UPDATE REVIEW: Customer service is very polite and they will refund you (only for 3 months though, so make sure you cancel/unsubscribe as you don't want to use the service anymore). I still think they should notify customers via an email or e-receipt that they withdraw money from your account.
Hey Kelsey. I emailed you last week for further information to locate an account. Please make sure to reply to our email with requested information. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support

Hi ST. Thanks for your feedback. You can definitely find all these concerns in our FAQ or simply email us at [email protected].
I can certainly understand why the line must be slightly more unclear. The vast majority of audiobooks are redeemed with a credit that we release each month with your subscription. While occasionally folks do purchase credits outright, we still cannot make any premium content available without an active subscription for the same reasons described above. Ultimately, redeeming a credit does not really grant you ownership of it, as it’s not an outright purchase of content; it's just a way for us to make those books available to you through our premium subscription in a fair and sustainable way.
In addition to the 3 Monthly Reads and 1 free audiobook credit you receive with each subscription payment, all of our community members also have access to our library of ebooks, our rotating catalog of select/unlimited audiobooks, articles, and so much more. This is similar to other streaming services, or a public library for example where you pay a flat fee each month to gain access to thousands of titles - but you don't actually own the content once you leave or have access to it without a membership for the same reasons.
If you can't get to all 3 books and an audiobook in a month's time, that's not a problem at all. Your Monthly Credits will stay put straight through the next month, and you'll still receive your next month's allotment. Any one user can ONLY accumulate up to 9 e-book credits and 3 audiobook credits in their account.
I hope this clears things up for you. Please let me know if you have any further questions by emailing us at [email protected]. Thanks! -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
