PetFinder Reviews Summary

The company has garnered significant criticism regarding its customer service and operational effectiveness. Common concerns include a lack of responsiveness from rescue organizations, frustrating website functionality, and perceived biases against quality breeders. Many customers reported unsuccessful attempts to adopt pets, often receiving no replies to their inquiries. While some users acknowledged the platform's role in facilitating pet adoption, the overarching sentiment reflects disappointment in the service's reliability and engagement. This feedback suggests a pressing need for improvements in communication, website usability, and support for both adopters and responsible breeders.

Completely Unresponsive
November 19, 2021

After filling out a complete application and providing years of Vet records, the Petfinder 'volunteers' could never find the time to respond to multiple inquiries.
They are a waste of your time. After 3 months the dog we wished to adopt is still on their website.
If you can't find time to respond, then don't volunteer. You are ruining what could be a good organization's reputation by your laziness and lack of care.

Not recommend
October 25, 2021

I adopted a cat at Un Chat Ou Un Cheval Pour Un Enfant. I paid a fee of $275 and the cat was not vaccinated up to date nor had the vaccine anti-rabies, and seemed very poor domesticated. Dominique was strongly unprofessional, rude with serious behavior issues. She also didn't respect Covid pandemic precautions, she came in my house without a mask and touched pommels of my doors and was even impolite. I will never adopt anymore an animal at Un Chat Ou Un Cheval Pour Un Enfan. I strongly don't recommend them.

Beware!
October 4, 2021

Asked to be notified of Great Pyrnees/Komondor dogs available. Received a pic of a puppy that had hound ears a d was a definite brownish brown coat. Also said it would be 25 lbs when adult. Fee was
$450. Could not possibly be a Komondor/Great Pyrnees. I questioned the organization and was told they had seen the parents of the pup and they were a Great Pyrnees and Komondor. This dishonest organization should be dropped from Pet Finder!.

I had just lost two of my beloved dogs only three months apart! I originally was looking for companion for my surviving dog but when I suddenly lost him was trying to adopt a bonded pair of dogs. The different agencies required a donation before they would consider my application. I checked with my vet and not one had even bothered to check my references. Honestly! We adopted our son 24 years ago and it was a much easier process even with FBI checks. What a bunch of bunk! Do not recommend you waste your time because they don't reply!

Complain
October 4, 2021

I found a dog at People For Pets, Spcner, Iowa. The dog was a perfect dog for me as I need a pet for therapy. I need a dog that is very gentle, not a jumper. This dog came to me right away at the kennel, sat down an leaned against me like he knew I needed him for therapy. I was turned down because the dog was going to be able to run free with me when I would be outside, we live in the country on an acreage. The director said it had to be on a leash when I was outside, which the dog would be until he became use to its new home.

About Petfinder.com
October 3, 2021

I have been sending in inquires for several dogs/pet to have a forever home. On October 03,2021 I emailed as to why I have gotten no answers/replies. This person named Beth sent me a reply to "she ONLY see 1 inquirer" so, where did the inquires go; seeing as when I sent them I got a reply that states "inquire sent" to each and ALL I sent my inquires for a dog. These people seem to not do what is BEST for the pet, but what is BEST they see FOR THEM in the PERSON(S) wanting to adopt (hint, hint). I do NOT trust adopting anymore, I will PAY for (BUY) a pet/dog before being done like this, when they need money they accept all, but when adopting that rule doesn't seem to apply! Thank YOU! Tried to upload the email conversation(s) between me and them but it would not allow it for the type of file it is saved as in folder.

Horrible Communication
September 9, 2021

One of the most frustrating experiences ever. I was interested in a couple of dogs, but each email I sent, inquiring about the dogs, was met with a short, unhelpful reply after several days of waiting. The lady I was communicating with somehow got fixated on the idea that I was going to stick the dog in the basement and never let them out. Despite me attempting many times to clear up the confusion, she buckled down and got more aggressive about not letting us adopt a dog. It felt like I was talking to a brick wall that had decided I wasn't what they considered to be the ideal pet owner.

Don't blame Petfinder
August 30, 2021

Petfinder does a great job of advertising thousands of animals up for adoption with daily updates of new pets or news of ones who may have been adopted from your favorites list. Most of what I read here in the reviews are complaints against individual animal shelters, not Petfinder. Let's try to vent our unhappiness in the right place.

Now that we're on to complaints about individual adoption agencies, I'd like to complain that in general, the folks running pet adoption agencies are extremely uppity, demand a ridiculous amount of highly personal information we have no idea what they do with and make judgements about people that may not be fair or appropriate. My biggest beef of all is the GHOSTING of people. After you religiously fill out their 5 page application, share more information than what is required to adopt a child and made a sworn affidavit that every thing you said was true, THEY DON'T EVEN BOTHER TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR APPLICATION, WRITE YOU BACK OR TELL YOU THE REASON YOU HAVE BEEN REJECTED. This is outrageously rude and no way to treat the people you want to adopt pets. I've had cats my whole life, but didn't get new cats when my two died of old age because we wanted to travel. I own my own home, have a steady income, great references and a nice veterinarian to put in a good word for me, but I am being ghosted over and over again and the only thing I can think of is that I am over 65. How do they know what physical condition I am in? I could outlive all of them. They could die of covid, get in a car wreck, overdose on something, or get cancer just like anyone else can. I walk at least 3 miles a day, do my own home improvements and volunteer at an arts organization in my area. It's outrageous they judge people without meeting them. I'm sure a lot of the younger folks are pros at writing what they want to hear and get pets they may not be responsible for in the long run. These volunteers may not have much education or have social emotional issues that make them want to play God over others. There are millions of homeless pets in this country. IF THEY WANT PEOPLE TO TAKE THESE ANIMALS, THEY PERHAPS COULD BE A BIT LESS RIGID WITH THEIR "RULES".

For over 8 months I have put in multiple applications to various shelters that have dogs listed on PetFinder. I then have to email or call the shelter because I hear nothing from them; it is as if my application, which they all request before I am considered worthy of adopting a dog from them, disappears into a black hole.
I have to email or call the shelter to find out where they are in consideration of my application and often by that time the dog has been adopted out to another party. Most of the shelters have horrible procedures and communication.
I have wanted to do the right thing and adopt a dog in need of a home from a shelter but the way things are going will likely end up buying a dog. Side note: We pretty much fit all of the qualifications shelters request such as a large fenced in yard, people often home for the dog, ability to take the dog for a walk as well as vet checkups, etc,. Experience training a dog and having had dogs but none of that seems to matter.

Rip Off
August 30, 2021

I adopted a 5 year old, 12lb. $#*!zu, named Leo from Petfinder/Wagging Tails animal rescue, for $600. The adoption process felt like I was adopting a child. Not only did I have to fill out forms online, but I also had to let them see what my house looked like while I was talking to them on the phone. I picked up Leo from the foster parent, who had me sign some additional forms. Leo was cute, followed me everywhere, he's definitely a lap dog. No one told me he bites, nor was it in his profile. He nipped my daughter, growled at my husband and the final straw was he bit my daughter, all of this happened in a week. I returned Leo and lost $600. No refund at all. There's a reason why you aren't able to leave a review on Petfinder.com and it's because they are a rip off. By the way…I saw Leo on Petfinder 2 weeks later for $700. Don't waste your money or time on Petfinder.com.

Flusterated
August 14, 2021

I got the application for a darling puppy but all the dogs IV seen and this puppy all live in Texas. She can be shipped, but first $ 400 dollar adoption fee, then $30£. For this driving company to transport her. So sad! That is a lot of anxiety for a pet to go that far. So a total $700 dollars to adopt. I don't think this company is for real. The photos never change eather. Yet they claim they put a lot of animals down recently. I would love to have someone check them out and see what is going on with this transporting animals from Texas to here, business. God bless those sweet animals.

As an animal rescuer who has personally save over 50 cats and 70 dogs, I was turned down today as unsuitable by PetFinder... even though my vets advocated on my behalf. I have a 19 year old pup and a 17 year old sweetie on who I have spent thousands... and who I would give my life for. The reason? Because my dog does not do well with vaccines--and my vet opted out of giving them. Crazy! Put your money elsewhere... go to your local pounds/shelters and support them. I know I will!

Wanted cat so badly
July 16, 2021

I contacted these people twice first I wanted a Russian blue kitten. They say no no reason why. 2nd one got approved then talked to discouraging foster mother said kitten is not good with people. Had another cat at time no vet. Has not needed one. Would have gotten one right Away. For kitten. Would not give me a chance. Better to fudge truth if you really have your heart set on animal. Why its better to buy from private owners or pet store horrible place. Treat you like 1st degree. When so many pets are. Approved Then abused. Turn down one that really could give animal true love. Should be investigated.

These fake rescue/foster groups claim to "want" to help animals, yet deny millions of pets potential adopters because they "think" they "know what's best for the animals"... I call out BS on you!
Most large breed dogs WILL NOT be adopted to people living in apartments.

I live in an apartment with a German Shephard! And got him off of petfinder. I don't have an issue what's so every with him, nor my neighbors. He's not a bother to them nor us. This notion that large breed dogs cannot go to people in apartments is a crook!

I was passed up for a couple who claimed they could help this dog I now have. The woman said she was in the vet business, and was trying to get the dog on all kinds of meds... SINCE I'VE HAD THE DOG, HE HASN'T SHOWN ANY AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR, NO MEDS NEEDED, AND JUST AN ALL AROUND PREFECT DOG!

Don't let these people lie to you saying you can't have a dog because you live in an apartment... It's ridiculous and shameful. You aren't really helping these animals...

Sucks
May 14, 2021

I spoke to a woman in Texas for all of 5 min for her to determine it wouldnt be a good match. I live in an apartment a big one but an apartment. She said "dont worry there's a dog out there for you. There are many digs to adopt." I just wanted to say to her yeah because of people like you who decide what's a good fit or not. I didnt though. We live in the woods... we hike everyday before I go to work. My boyfriend is a stay at home retired veteran dad. She placed judgment without truly knowing the circumstances. Thanks lady... its people like you who make it hard for the poor dogs to find there forever loving home. I dont recommend this site. Stay local.
