I am a fleet manager for a small cabling company in NYC. We decided to open a fleet account with Pepboys. BIG MISTAKE! 9 out of 10 locations would try to add on unnecessary and unrequested work. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO PEPBOYS, EVEN FOR AN OIL CHANGE! They will try to nail you for wiper blades, shocks, brakes and anything else they can think of courtesy of their "free" vehicle inspection in order to run up the bill. Service Managers are High School drop outs hired by Pepboys at low wages.

November 2, 2020

Pepboys will over book and provide a unhealthy waiting area. Tool 2.5 hrs to get and oil change and possible Covid-19 infection. Got trace call this morning from them. Never will I do business with them, save yourself and do the same.

You can't go wrong getting your repairs done here. We are from out of town, when the alternator went out and they got us a better price, and more timely repair than anyone else closeby! May did a great job providing professional service at a good price. They care about their customers, and will do what they can to help you. This was our first experience with Pep Boys, and we will go there from now on!

Poor online experience
October 8, 2020

I have attempted twice to order a floor jack on the Pep Boys web site for local delivery to a store for payment and pick up. Each time the online service verifies the pick up order but after 6 weeks I still have not received any notification that either order for the items has arrived for pick up. I understand the delays due to Covid19 but this seems a bit excessive. I wonder if because I am selecting the pay in store option upon pick up if the system is downgrading my order for delayed or late fulfillment. It matters because the price online is $45 cheaper when ordered online as a special. If I cannot actually get one at this price on line then its pointless to advertise it on line and very misleading. Disappointed.

This being my second experience at pep boys i should have known better. Everyone told me don't go to pep boys but i needed an inspection done asap. I walk in and customer service was great everyone was friendly and very willing to help. I drop my car off and get a call the next day saying it failed inspection. So i'm thinking what would have failed, i just checked the car over myself. "The rear wheel bearings have to much play." Ok how much. Not only did he try to sell me wheel bearings he tried to convince me i needed tires. Tires were not even a year old and were still a 3. Brakes were okay alignment should be fine no other issues. If i don't need tires why are trying sell me tires along with bearings. So for $1300 i'll take the work somewhere else. I go to my own personal mechanic. He asks me how these even failed they had hardly any play if any. I take it to my local dealership and have them look at it that week. Same answer from them. So no questions asked my mechanic orders an OE bearing and hub assembly for both of the rear. $300 total. After the issue is fixed Pepboys failed my car again for the same issue and tried saying the issue was worse. And now they say my tires are a 2 instead of a 3 in just one week and that my tires need done for sure. Even though there not even a year old and have plenty of tread. (a 3 according to the dealership). Also my brake caliper might need replaced they say and that i should get new rotors even though i just had the entire brake kit installed this year. (rotors caliper and pads) This place makes me laugh and i'm not sure how the people that work here even sleep at night trying to scam people. I've asked several people and they all told me don't go to pepboys. And i should have listened. This is my own personal experience yours may be different. They try giving those free things like oh we can inspect this and inspect that but to fix it your gonna pay top dollar at this place with mechanics that didn't get a job at a dealership, but they got hired at pepboys. Just remember that when they work on your car or truck. Oh and by the way my first experience years ago ended in my one tire never being torqued down. Yup it came off around 20 ft lbs and came off like nothing. Sounds safe to me. You choose.

Scam
September 22, 2020

On Saturday September 12, I went to Pepboys on Bustleton Ave in NE Philadelphia for oil change and they called me and said more work need to be done, and gave me an estimate. I ended up paying $1102. 52 for the tie rod end, tires etc... they were supposed to stop the noise that we heard for quite sometime. Two days after the car was making the same noise. This time the guys said that I have to pay another $1000 or more to replace the axles and so forth. They refused to fix my Forester because I disagreed with them on paying again. I will never do business with them again.

Price Gauging
September 19, 2020

I went to pep boys for rear brakes. They wanted to charge me 1200. 00. They lied to me told my brakes were leaking. I went for a second opinion and surprise not true. My brakes charge was 283. No leak. Hmm all I can say is shame on pep boys for taking advantage of me because I'm a female. Please don't go the location in arlington heights road and rand. They are nothing but a bunch of schamers.

I used this location because it's convenient even though I was told to avoid at all costs! It changes mgmt. Every month and cannot keep employees, I'll tell you why... Jayme the store manager is rude, condescending and had zero customer service skills. He makes you call other centers to get info on your previous visits just to make his job easier, he calls and gives no description of the services he performed without my approval. He charged me a battery disposal fee and $15 tax on a less than 6 month warranty that even he admitted was a bad battery! When I inquired about the battery being bad so quickly he stated "$#*! happens". When I questioned the bill I received for a warranted battery he said and just who do you expect to pay the taxes!? I was leaving the office and he never even thanked me for my business so when I said you're welcome he ignored me! I went to my vehicle only to find grease on my entire interior of my lightly colored, and recently detailed interior. He immediately got defensive, told me to pull it up to a bay so he didn't have to walk into the parking lot, then began to call his tech at home and ask if he'd ruined my interior. Lastly he said he was 100% sure Phoenix towing did it because the tow truck driver didn't know what he was doing! He lastly said they won't do $#*! for me because he used to work in that industry. He also lied that they don't get grease on cars because his people where gloves, long sleeves and he was sure everything in my vehicle was covered! The tech put covers over the deep black grease stains!?! My neighbor works for Pep Boys and told me the manager was lying as he stood in front of me after his $#*! covered in black oil from head to toe! So buyer beware, go somewhere who is honest and appreciates your business. I will never return.

Check rims before paying!
September 7, 2020

I took my car to the location in Western Hills, Cincinnati. I always inspect my vehicle before paying. Looking at my rims I noticed scuff marks on all four. I tried to wipe them off, but no luck. I got tires for free, and damaged wheels. They did work with me, but very disappointed. Think changing tires everyday they'd know how to avoid scratching them up.

Making money
September 3, 2020

On august 2020, at 1:00pm. I have appointment for car alignment, I arrived on time and I told the one who attended me that the car probably needs new tire, he replied that the technician will inform him what the car needs. After 2.1/2 hours of waiting they finally started to check my car., 1/2 hours after they given me an estimated up to $3,000.00 not including the tire.
I take my car another workshop, they changed the tire and did not need alignment, everything was fine, the problem was the tire.

I made an appointment online for 8:30 am. First, they have ONE person behind the counter, I arrive at 8:15 and don't make it to the counter until 8:50. The guy tells me he only has 2 mechanics, so I ask how long will it take. He says a couple hours. Generally, a couple of hours to most people is about 2. Then I wait and wait and wait and wait. At 10:15am I go up to the counter and ask if my car is ready as I stepped out to get something to eat. He checks and says I'm next. 11:11 comes around, I walk back up to the counter and inquire about my vehicle. The manager tells me they are bringing the vehicle in now. So it took them almost three hours to get my vehicle in the bay to do an oil change. I ask, why have appointments if people are going to have to wait three hours for their car to be worked on? He says, the system allows 9 appointments per hour and they only have two mechanics because of corona virus. My next question is, then why not book appointments for the staff you have? His response is, I have no control over that. So not only were they understaffed for the business they had, they are making all customers wait extensive amounts of time. You tell me a couple of hours, like any normal person, I'm thinking the job will be done by then to just starting. GREAT WAY TO DO BUSINESS! I will NEVER RECOMMEND PEPBOYS. The service is atrocious. You see employees lazily walking around as if there is no work to be done. And a general, "I don't care attitude." I will not be coming here again.

About 6 months ago I bought a battery at the lake Grove pepboys. They were nice enough to price match a competitor. Now it's dead. Ok it can happen but I know it's covered under warranty. I called the 800 number because I couldn't find my receipt. Using the information from my bank account I gave them everything they needed to track it down. They said it would be 24-48 hours and they would email it to me. 4 days later I called up because I hadn't received it yet. I was told they found it and then put on hold for a manager who could email it to me. After about 10 minutes I was told the manager was busy but would email it to me by 9. At 10 I called back and got an unpleasant person who again confirmed they had my receipt and would probably email it by the end of the day. Later that day they sent it. Now I call pepboys and was offered to leave my car all day and they would try to get to it. Instead I made an appointment for 3 days later because that's the first one they had available for me to wait for it and not leave it all day. Now I wait the 3 days get to the store where they booked my appointment as a drop off. Then I'm told I don't need the receipt I bought because I bought it at the same store. How can one company handle a simple battery problem this poorly. As I write this my appointment was 45 minutes ago. My car hasn't been touched and what should have been a ten minute process is now over a week in the making.

This month I bought Continental tires for our two cars on Amazon and elected to have them installed through Amazon/Pep Boys link. First installation was at Moreno Valley Pep Boys. To make a long story short the install was almost two hours long and I was the only one in the waiting area for an hour. Next I had my wife's tires done at Pep Boys Riverside Magnolia. She waited there as well as she was the only customer there. It also took almost two hours for the installation. Both with appointments go figure! 100 minutes each really? Pepboys advertise average tire install at 45 minutes. Https :// www.pepboys. Store location, 6814 Tilton Rd #8, Egg Harbor Township, NJ *******. May 19 2020 I purchased on Pep Boys a pair of rotors and break pads for my vehicle, July 08 2020 I went back to Pep Boys and I told them something wrong with the part they sold me, the guy told to to bring back the parts and because i didnt have the copy of the receipt they can not give me cash back, but they can give me a credit, I said is ok with me, next day July 09/2020 went with the old parts and they treaded me with a nasty attitude and accused me that those auto parts didnt belong to their store, they also said the part look old and rusty, I said to look in their computer because I paid with my debbit card, they pretended to look and they said they can not find it on the system. Base on my personal experience this is worst place to buy your auto parts, costumer service is bad, what they sale is garbage, better stay with AutoZone

I have an old Lexus and my AAA battery died. No one could open the hood. After 1 1/2 hours the repair team at the Tamarac Pep Boys on Commercial Blvd got the hood open, did an oil change and jump started the battery. They charged me $51! The dedication that Jamal B and his repair team have to the car is phenomenal. I would give them 6 stars if I could.
Thank you Jamal B! I have recommended Pep Boys Tamarac to two people.

Hard to do worse
June 26, 2020

TL; DR If you are young and/or female, avoid Pep Boys on 85th Street in Kirkland, WA. If you don't you will be ripped off by folks who have no qualms and no discernible morals.
I have been a customer of this shop for many years (10?). I have sent friends and family to this shop and repaired my two cars there repeatedly. Two weeks ago however my daughter's power steering pump broke. This is a $120 part on Amazon, the repair is taking roughly 1 hour. I was not home to check the estimate, but based on my previous history with this shop I advised my daughter to trust the work... So imagine my surprise when they charged $1800 for a repair item that would be under 500 anywhere else. They charged 6+ hours of labor and $664.24 for the $120 part. So I go to ask them what's up. Here's how that went (the manager there was Chris):
Me: "Why did you charge 5X the Amazon price for this pump?"
Chris: "We don't source our parts off Amazon".
(So the fact that they source parts from a more expensive place is an excuse? And if they indeed source from a place that is 5X more expensive, isn't that shameful incompetence?)
Me: "Why did you charge for 6+ hours of labor when this repair takes one hour?"
Chris: "We also flushed power steering and replaced the spark plugs".
Me: "That is ridiculous, highway robbery level theft".
Chris: "We checked everything with the customer".
Me: "You mean my 18 year old daughter, right?"

Long story short, no remorse, no shame, no clue about what it means to show loyalty to their customers - nothing that comes with what you would call a honest business. And what infuriated me more is that they don't pull this nonsense with me, an adult, but they prey on the young and likely on the female customer. And worse, the car did not even run for one day after the "repair" - they failed to check that the alternator was not charging and the battery came back completely depleted. $1800 for a $500 repair and the car still does not run. That's what they do to a 10+ year client. Just imagine what they'll do to you.

While shopping yesterday, I was by the Pep boys in Surprise and asked if they could check my battery, which had started "acting up", while I was at the store next door. Fortunately, they agreed. I was told it needed replacement (it was 8 years old) and was able to get an appointment this morning. The service associate, Anthony T, went right to work and was done within 30 minutes, replacing my cabin air filter as well. Not only was he exceedingly friendly and efficient, but he willingly provided several discounts! I heartily recommend this establishment.
