I've been a member of NextDoor for a few years. My first neighborhood NextDoor was great. People conversed and shared opinions respectfully and intelligently. Then, I moved last year, and my opinion of NextDoor has dropped incredibly, mainly because it feels like my new neighborhood is run by a bunch of narrow-minded bullies who click the "report" button faster than anyone can say "open mind." My neighborhood's LEAD has very strong feelings about some social and civic stuff and if you don't support her, she targets you. I made the mistake of asking a question about a failed neighborhood watch program last summer and she immediately took offense and started to private message me about my comments. Since then, she has continued to single me out every chance she gets. There is inconsistency on the site in regards to solicitations and "be helpful not harmful" type posts. There is a lot of negativity on the site and people feel free to say racist and unkind things to one another. Unless it's a post to complain about something, you get overlooked or ignored. There is a definite high-school clique mentality, and sometimes, even some racial profiling. Some people are quick to call out their neighbors publicly for things instead of having an adult conversation. I've had to turn off notifications for just about every thread because I'm tired of reading the in-fighting and dozens of pleas to please join a civic league whose only mission seems to be to thwart progress. So... use with caution.
I was removed sometimes in 2015 for standing up to a very racist thread posted by an old, barely informed lady in our neighborhood. The thread was about "foreigners" who actually constitute a huge percentage in our gated community of over 1,200 expensive properties. That is Hackberry Creek in Irving Texas.
One lead guy was part of the thread. From his post and frequent remarks, you could tell he was a brazenly right wing conspiracy theorist, Glen Beck devotee, Birther and AM Hate radio fan). He amplified all the racist assumptions on that thread with lots of pseudo-intellectual comments. Other posters were not as straightforward, but you could tell they had problems with condemning racism.
I got a phone call from the HOA board chairman who advised that we all "be nice" and I thanked him. But that same day, I noticed that my account had been disabled. In fact, ALL posts on my name were removed. A friend (of Indian origin) questioned why my account was removed but the original racist thread and poster (that I challenged) were left untouched; he did not get any answer but his account was removed too.
I actually never bothered to complain or call anyone because I had other things going for me outside of a social media app. Other than my two immediate neighbours, I am not particularly curious about who else lives here or was I looking to be socially validated by anyone. But I felt very proud to have challenged blatant racism by that lady and the lead. In fact, that event gave me a clue to the strange disappearance of several member accounts prior to mine, especially members who had been part of any thread where their political or social opinion is considered "liberal".
I didn't know that America's "culture war" extended to NextDoor as one more battlefield.
I was also banned by Nextdoor because "someone complained" that I had violated the guidelines which are vague and way too subject to opinion. I read them and I had not violated them. Nonetheless I was banned. I had put a post about an article I had written. This is what got me banned. After I was banned I noticed that a ton of people were blatantly promoting their businesses. Clearly discrimination. I am out.
After a year of membership on Nextdoor, com, I have observed that its liberal management stifles free speech. So called "Lead" people are capable of having posts that they do not agree with removed with little or no explanation. Complaints to Nextdoor management fall on deaf ears... So, why waste ones time...?
Stay away from this site. Nextdoor does not devote any effort or resources to checking comments that are reported. Trolls learn all they have to do is report a comment and Nextdoor will suspend an account without even glancing at the comment to see if it actually violated any guidelines. And, they suspend accounts without any warning. This means people can be silenced simply because someone else disagrees with what they have had to say. This social media site is a mess and I deleted my account because of their practices. And, they do nothing about actual bullying. Nextdoor sucks folks, don't go there.
ND is a forum for bullies and complainers. Don't agrivate yourself and don't sign up.
Individuals who under the radar, bully and complain about neighbors continually defeats the purpose of a "friendly" neighborhood post. Yuk!'
As a new resident in our community I joined Nextdoor in order to gain information about our community and residents and was very disappointed with the attitude of the "leader" who is not only a bully, but also removes posts indiscriminately from the site that are informative and correct with no personal enmity towards anyone. The posts that she removes represent a point of view contrary to her agenda which she makes very clear in her posts. I wish I had researched Nextdoor before joining, and now I see why many of my neighbors have not joined.
I've had people curse at me and troll my posts claiming everything I am saying is false but when I respond with actual facts I'm the one that is banned for days on end without anyone being able to cite the rule I broke. Stay away.
Other than the few instances where people recommend local businesses like plumbers, tree trimmers and painters, the site is totally useless. Oh sure, the occasional lost dog notification is sometimes helpful.
Beyond that, Instead of being able to discuss community issues/concerns, with all sides being heard, the bullies, mostly of the 'ultra-compassionate' variety, always have the final say-so, and those disagreeing with their bleeding heart views are 'reported' and/or banned. A big POX on NextDoor -- useless tripe.
Wish I had come to Sitejabber before signing onto Nextdoor.com. Joining nextdoor.com has been a negative experience for me. I was trolled and cyber bullied by a small group of "men." Didn't matter what the topic, they were always there. They could say anything they wanted basically. The leads would do nothing for long periods of time then step in and remove an entire discussion punishing all the people who took the time to make thoughtful, intelligent non-abusive comments. I went directly to nextdoor.com using their help line. Some of the bullies' comments were removed, but then the bullies would just repost them. Then nextdoor lectured me when I spoke up for myself and spoke back to the bullies to set the record straight and correct their deliberately false statements about me. Unlike them, I was polite and truthful. But somehow nextdoor.com categorized this as the same thing the bullies were doing. It was crazy making. Bottom line -- there is no protection from cyber bullying and trolling, and you do not dare speak up for yourself even if you have tried to get help from nextdoor.com and have not received any. From now on, I will thank people and post links to helpful information, but that is it. It isn't safe for me to do anything else. Nextdoor.com lets trolls and cyber bullies win.
They harbored a convicted felon who has threatened and preyed on nice people like me and the others who have been removed from Nextdoor. I hired him to do a simple cedar fence repair and all of the work had to be removed and redone. Yes, I warned people in my neighborhood. I was warned by Nextdoor that I was about to be removed for shaming. I tried to explain to them politely and nicely what was happening regarding this man Daniel Acosta, D'z Home Services, in Pueblo, Colorado, who advertises on Nextdoor for two days, but Nextdoor chose to let him continue to remain and con people with his ads. Yes, he is a con-artist! And yes, he is a dangerous convicted felon! They kept him on Nextdoor and banned all of the people, which were mostly older women, who were trying to warn all of the unsuspecting people of this thief... but for some reason, all of the warnings went right over their heads. They banned all of the people who had been harmed and bilked financially and shamed us! I told them I will tell everyone I know how Nextdoor operates. Nextdoor does not do their due diligence and I wouldn't doubt if this goes viral or becomes national news! I am a single senior disabled woman who is scared to death right now that Daniel Acosta will seek revenge. How will I sleep knowing he might be planning revenge on me and the others who called him out? Nextdoor has punished the wrong people, and the con-artist continues to con. Good going Nextdoor!
Criteria for Leads (area leaders) is insufficient. The supervision or management between the Leads and the corporate office does not exist. Try to establish protection plans for neighborhood safety and you will be stepped on and your message deleted. Nextdoor is only for small talk from simple minded people where bad people feel safe in attacking clever ideas. The number of emails you get per day is overwhelming. Out of about 100 emails you might get 2 or 3 messages of value. If you see a black cat walking down the street, this is the place to report it and discuss it. Nextdoor is a for-profit company that profits from advertising. They simply threw a program out there and let it regulate itself at ground level. If you are smart enough to read then you can find better places to communicate with your neighbors. Look for Meetup.com groups.
Privacy and Social Networking do not compliment each other. You can't even delete the nextdoor.com account. You can deactivate and find out 90 days later that it's in the same state that it was in when you left it. Give us a little honesty, since we are your product and put a delete button on the site. Way to make people feel uneasy nextdoor.com!
I am one of a handful of people of color left in my neighborhood... good ol' gentrification! I recently signed up on Nextdoor. Yesterday, I posted my first comment. I discussed how we should be more mindful of one another and respectful of each other's space and property. Specifically, I was fed up with neighbors allowing their dogs to pee on my plants, and with people freely walking through and around others' yards. I stated that these behaviors were impolite. A few people commented. I responded. One lady in particular stated that I should be more understanding of people like her who have male dogs that want to "mark" their territory. Other than a neighbor who agreed with me and vented his frustrations with the changes in the neighborhood, nothing major was said. His comment was reported (according to him), and now I am locked out of my account! I have yet to receive a response from customer service. A random "Lead" from Arizona contacted me, but was unable to help me log back into my account. My spouse who also has Nextdoor says that my profile isn't even on their site anymore! The brief time I was on Nextdoor yesterday, I witnessed racial profiling on several posts. One man's post that specifically addressed racism in our neighborhood, was deleted! This whole site is a joke! Considering the recent bombings here in Austin, I'm more scared of my White male neighbors than anyone else! I just cannot believe how petty, disrespectful, prejudicial and discriminatory Nextdoor AND my neighbors are! Don't even bother with Nextdoor if you want to maintain any sense of security and dignity... especially if you live in a neighborhood flooded by white privilege!
Someone is sitting in an office and deciding what is appropriate and what is not. With guidelines that they aren't reading.
NextDoor seems to be very random in how they review posts. Joking about physical violence is evidently ok. Recommending that jokes about physical violence are not appropriate to NextDoor is "public shaming."
I was also accused of using a "false name" because I used my married name and my maiden name is my email account (which I got before I got my husband).
I was told, like a child who had thrown a tantrum, that if I agreed to be a good girl, they would consider letting me back in.
Thanks -- but no thanks.
Why is this app so popular? I loved the idea of it, but absolutely hate how they let the neighbors have full control over what they want posted and not posted. I posted asking if anyone was in need of a nanny. By no means am I a business and I assumed this app was for me to communicate with my neighbors. So I got my post reported by my neighbors and a email from customer service saying they were removing my post because I was advertising my business and should take my post to nextdoor business. Now why, If i am not a business, would i do that. Upon further inspection on the app store, nextdoor posted a photo as an example of someone offering their services to walk dogs... exactly what i had done but mine was taken down. So of course, i post again. Not specifying that I would be the nanny, so it could be viewed as a recommendation. Well, I was banned. I was told that I had violated the guidelines and would need to email them in 2 weeks if I wanted my account reinstated. I then sent them a screenshot of their example post of the dog walking ad for the regular nextdoor app. Instead of apologizing they told me they had posted it as a mistake and it is in the works to be taken down... but I am still banned? They contradict themselves and allow neighbors to report people without actually reviewing anything. They do not take into consideration that they nor the neighbors may be wrong. I am very disappointed with the way customer service handled this and how they are wasting so much of the investors money because they don't want to monitor their own app. I wish I could post pictures on here to prove the dog walking ad and show the emails between customer service and I. They told me they do not review the feeds and rely on neighbors to report inappropriate posts... too bad people are judgemental and want this to be some sort of HOA. I would not recommend this app to anyone, there are plenty of pages on Facebook and other sites to do the same thing.
Like previous review very one sided if one person complains they remove you without explainition there is no consideration to the fact that the person whom reported you might actually be wrong. I posted to nextdoor a series of complaints they intern did not address any of them. When I asked them to review their policies for our particular neighbor hood siting that all my neighbors requested the review of policy they did not respond
NextDoor seems to be one sided... in the opinion of the leads. If someone does not like you, they can "report" you for anything they want. You cannot advertise your service business unless you are a national corp or a real estate business or a pet company. Don't waste your time...
On Thursday 3-15-18 I received a very nasty email from Peoria Elementary/Nextdoor telling me my account was suspended because of my last name? I had been on Peoria Elementary since 2016 w/o incident & all of a sudden its a problem. I was told temporary suspension but it was clear cut racism, discrimination & prejudice because if you are anything but White you are not suppose to speak! 24 hrs has came and went & yet no reinstatement by this woman name Elisa in which they gave me a case no. Peoria Elementary/Nextdoor is worse then bigots full racists creatures who want to keep you in your place if you are Black but yet they can and do talk about anything & everything stupid and yet discriminate if you bring REAL to them! Never had any problems until now 2018! As I told them if they had a problem with my last name then it should had been brought to my attention in 2016 not 2 years later and that's why I have to call it - Discrimination, Racism, Prejudiceness and violation of the 1st Amendment of the US Constitution - Rights to Privacy. But then again obviously they don't care about stalkers, etc.
2021 update: Nextdoor convinced Khosla Ventures that it's worth $4 billion, and in preparation for going public Nextdoor has expanded the default reach of every post. As a result, the feed is unmanageable noise. So if you come on Nextdoor looking for the Police Department's comments on an issue, you first have to scroll past dozens of posts from people three towns away asking if anyone heard a loud noise down the street at 3:00 a.m., posting pictures of their dogs, and observing that it is raining. It's garbage, and the unpaid Leads Nextdoor has relied on to moderate content are disengaging from the platform.
From 2018:
My local Nextdoor site is devolving into nothing but a collection of knick knacks for sale, because any thread dealing with anything more interesting than dentist recommendations is flagged for removal. A few bullies want to determine what everyone else in the neighborhood talks about, and they are doing so with the aid of Nextdoor management by complaining that opposing views are not "neighborly." What a waste of millions in investors' money.
Answer: The negative reviews are honest reactions to being duped into sharing too much personal information (that Nextdoor now owns and will NEVER delete and will continue to sell to advertisers until your dying day) to join a site that seems friendly on the surface, but which does NOTHING to protect users. I was bullied by a convicted murderer, who is a Lead in my neighborhood--and I was banned from the site for complaining. Leads are nothing more than early adopters of the site who have been assigned power over other users so that Nextdoor does not have to police it's own site. In short: No. The negative reviews are not wrong. Heed them! I wish I had known before it was too late!
Answer: Forget about nextdoor and leads. Get a life, a real one. Don't waste your time with toxic online communities that tend to get the worst out of people. My advise is run away while you still have some dignity left.
Answer: Kay is right. That is their policy. However, don't expect them to hold to it. We have leads unfairly removing only some people's comments and Nextdoor does nothing about it. Best bet, dump nextdoor.
Answer: Neighborhood. Rocks is in development. Another 6 months.
Answer: Truth is like oil and water. As long as the scam artist have enough venture capital (other people's money) they will continue to shake the bottle leaving it a murky view obscuring the truth. Run out of cash, they'll be exposed for the incompetent boobs they are and the top dogs will clear out their bank accounts and move on to the next scam. One look at their "leading edge tech" pulled right out of the 1980's is proof enough they will die in the tar pits just like the fellow dinosaurs. Want a state of the art app? Check out https://wiggio.com or www.neighborhoodlink.com
Answer: Dallas, SiteJabber rates it at 16%. It would surely rate lower if there weren't so many fake positive reviews. Folks review Nextdoor either 1 or 5. The fives read like ads about Nextdoor's features and potential. The ones are written by real people and give accounts of how awful their experiences were.
Answer: Several other reviewers on this site have had the same thing happen to them. We have been fully banned from nextdoor (beyond just "suspension"), but they keep our profiles, and sometimes our names still appear in the neighbor registry. They refuse to remove us fully, I suppose, in an attempt to misrepresent our endorsement and participation there. It's clearly unethical, but their TOS states that they can do this, as any nd apologist will point out.
Answer: Here's a tidy answer from corporate... Hi Colleen, Thanks for getting back to me. Our Community Guidelines prohibit posting about Lead activity on the main newsfeed. If your Leads are inactivate and youre concerned about moderation in your neighborhood, you should reach out directly to Nextdoor Support. If you have any specific concerns I can help you with at this time, please let me know. Best, Amanda Nextdoor However, the minute you alert corporate to issues with leads in your community you'll find your account terminated. They are very protective of the information surrounding who really is controlling the activities on the boards. Most people in my community are under the misguided impression that corporate is in control. They don't even consider it is their neighbor who sits in judgement.
Answer: Nextdoor wants your full legal name, house number and address and your email address that they link all together. As an added bonus... They have a little map that you can click on. That way if, OMG, you offend someone the little map leads them straight to your house. Run, do not walk, away from this site. No good comes from Nextdoor.
Answer: Your name and address will be known to everyone who uses the NextDoor application and website. I don't suggest using it. I recently discovered that low income apartments in ghetto areas might be able to use the application to do crime. Car theft, asaaults, kidnapping and just about everything else under the sun.
