NetSpend's reputation is largely tarnished by pervasive customer dissatisfaction, particularly related to its customer service and account management. Many users report significant challenges in activating cards, accessing funds, and receiving timely support, often facing long wait times and unhelpful representatives. Concerns about account security and unauthorized closures further exacerbate frustrations. While a few customers have expressed loyalty and satisfaction in the past, the overwhelming sentiment reflects a lack of reliability and transparency. Overall, potential customers are advised to exercise caution and consider alternative options for prepaid services.

I get the temporary card from a local grocery store, put 30 bucks on it and activate it. They send a "permanent" card to replace the temporary one. Yet they dont transfer the money over. I have to call in to do it and they charge $4.95 to transfer the money. Not to mention the initial $5.95 fee just to have the account. There is also a ton of other fees for transactions and inactivity.
There are many better options out there, please check reviews before you make the same mistake I did.
This is a workplace debit card, yet they seem completely opposed to offering options to transfer funds to an actual checking account that one would have with an actual bank. They talk about transferring funds from, again, ACTUAL BANK ACCOUNTS, to their own account, but make no attempt to do the opposite. It's pathetic, and Netspend is a begrudging necessity to my current job. Satisfy your patrons. Stop trying to make yourself the main dog, because part of being a proper bank account means making the transfer of funds easy and accessible. This is ridiculous.

Please anybody who even thinks about using this card. DONT! They will block your account for no reason and steal your money. They are a very untrustworthy company. They are grimy and underhanded please dont trust them with your hard earned money. I regret depending on their card very much. I dont ever write reviews no matter how good or bad something is but this is just outrageous! They transfer you to more than 3 people then they hang up on you repeatedly and just plain treat you like crap. PLEASE USE ANY OTHER COMPANY BUT THIS ONE! NOT TRUSTWORTHY! I wish I could put a zero
It is worth paying a $5.00 monthly fee to NetSpend because I get unlimited transactions and I get paid direct deposit money sooner than anyone I work with. NetSpend also gives me free text alerts describing each transaction made so I never have to wonder what my balance is. NetSpend is a trustworthy prepaid card. They will even cover me if I overdraw up to 10 bucks since I have direct deposit. Just read their policies; very simple to understand, choose your plan and you won't be disappointed.

I personally really enjoy having netspend. I have had several times where my account has been hacked. Netspend has made it right every single time. I would not have known right away if it weren't for them flagging my account. They really do pay attention to what is right on my account and what is not. They have always reimbursed me when my account has been hacked. Just today I had a company charge me the same thing twice. That company stated they could only see the one transaction. They asked for my bank to be on the line to verify. I got Netspend on the line and they verified that there were 2 of the same transaction. Netspend declined the 2nd transaction and refunded my money back immediately. I love that you get paid before the actual pay date. I don't like the fee for the ATM, as the ATM's charge a fee and then Netspend charges a fee. I love how even transactions that are pending have already come out of the available balance immediately. I have overdrawn several banks for this alone. All in all, I've had Netspend for 5 years and I don't plan on leaving them anytime soon!
Hello Suzanne,
Thank you for your feedback!
We are glad to hear that you are happy with your Netspend services. We value the security of our cardholders and work hard to make sure that your account and funds are protected.

Never buy a Netspend prepaid card, they market them under various labels so check online before buying any prepaid.
I left a complaint with this company that details it but basically they lock your money if they cant verify your addres, well ok thats fine. But the amount of BS you have to go through to get unlocked is incredible. At one point the rep on the phone even admitted "yeah that proves you moved their" but still they wouldnt unlock the account. I dont know what they are doing with my money but never buy a netspend prepaid card.

My experience with NetSpend occurred last summer, and I am glad that I really dodged a bullet with this one. I've since opened a bank account and own an actual debit card. Onto my experience, I had just began a small summer job that payed well for my age, once the job was complete, I didn't have the necessary components for a bank account so I began looking for alternatives. My local grocery store had these cards in stock with the name "NetSpend", once I realized that their cards were re loadable, I instantly purchased it and loaded $500 onto the card. Upon activation, I received an error indicating that I needed to call their customer service which might I add is awful in it's own right (finding a fluent English speaker is an absolute nightmare), after a relatively smooth connection, the woman on the other end indicated that I needed to provide some personal information (Social security #, proof of address etc.), after sending this information TWICE, both times were completely denied with VERY poor excuses. Not only did they have my money held hostage but I had no other money to use in the meantime, after constant battle with their god awful customer service, they offered to return the money in the form of a check, I agreed and much to my surprise, received it in the mail after I gave hell to their support team. I ended up having to use Visa gift cards that summer as an alternative, It wasn't the best option but it was a thousand times more reliant than this horrible excuse of a company, If YOU or your child or whoever are looking for an alternative to a bank account, save yourself the trouble and avoid this monstrosity, you will not regret it, I promise. They can and WILL rip you clean off. I've even read some reviews where some never even received the paycheck from NetSpend, ultimately ending with them never gaining the money that NetSpend took, back! Awful company and I will do everything in my power to assure that no one I know or myself, to never purchase from them ever again. Goodbye NetSpend, unlike you, Huntington actually cares for my money and doesn't hold it hostage.
(PS: No regrets!)
Hello Roby,
We are sorry to hear about your experience.
We are required to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens a Card Account due to federal regulations. When you open a Card Account, we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, and your government ID number. We may also ask to see your driver’s license or other identifying information. Card activation and identity verification are required before you can use the Card Account.
That being said, we want the activation process to be convenient for our cardholders. All steps, from speaking with our agents to submitting documentation, should be easily completed.
We appreciate the feedback you have provided. We are glad to hear that you received your check so that you could have access to your funds. Please send an email to [email protected] if you have additional questions or concerns.

Recentlygot a Netspend card, loaded $215 and the first time that I went to use it it got denied. Called customer service and was told that it is standard procedure for them to receive a copy of my social security card even though it says that nowhere on their packaging. Unfortunately I've lost my social security card so I explained that to them ask them if I could provide any other type of documentation they told me no. After a much heated debate with their horrible customer service representative I was told that they would be mailing me my check back and I would receive it in 7 to 10 business days. I also didn't mention that I purchased that card to pay a traffic ticket and another bill that I had due on that same day, so now I had to call the police department get an extension for 30 days on my ticket and my other bills yet to be paid. Today I arrived home it is the 10th business day, run to my mailbox and guess what? No check from NetSpend. I also forgot to mention that when I called them about it the other day to check on its status they had my condo number wrong even though I was the one who registered it and certainly registered it right. So in my mind I think because I caused such a stink with the customer service representative he purposely left a number out of my condo number so that I wouldn't receive the check, because come to find out when it gets sent back there's another 15 day waiting period Before they can mail you another check, that also takes 7 to 10 days to arrive. I'm going to call them tomorrow and raise hell I want my money back I'm not having it tied up for over a month because they're stupid and cannot do their jobs right. If you are planning on purchasing a NetSpend card do yourself a favor and buy a Visa gift card instead! Horrible experience!
Dear Missy,
We are sorry to hear that you did not have a positive experience with Netspend. We appreciate that you are sharing your feedback so that we can work to improve the Customer Service experience for all of our cardholders.
We are glad that your check arrived and that you have access to your funds.

Netspend had Synina Rodriguez and Oscar Sotuyo who were Customer Experience Analysts. I provided them with documentation showing I was incarcerated, not in possession of the card and there was a restraining/ no contact order in effect with the ex girlfriend who used the card. We are not married, no joint bank accounts, she is not an authorized user on the account, and our relationship was ended the day I was arrested and the restraining/ no contact/ order of protection was put into effect and any previously rites, authorities, or agreements became null in void. As also stated in the police report. All privledges were revoked upon arrest and dissolution of the relationship. How can this not be automatic grounds for reimbursement. Also how could no fraud warnings or procedures be in place when multiple high value atm withdrawals are done in one day?! How can they have a woman call, have recordings of her voice! And allow her to order a new card to a different address then on file and send it?! This is ludicrous! And no provisional credit during the investigation? I'm a senior. Please help!
Dear Joseph,
We understand you are dissatisfied with the conclusion of your dispute claim.
When investigating dispute claims reported by our cardholders, we adhere to the processes as defined in both Regulation E and in Netspend cardholder agreements that customers receive when opening an account.
After additional review of your dispute claim, we have confirmed that it was handled appropriately. The documentation regarding your dispute investigation has been mailed to your address on file.
Thank you,
Netspend
I've had a Netspend account for a few years. I have 40% of my pay deposited into that account and the other 60% deposited into my credit union account which I've only had for 1 year. 11/29/2018 I received my payroll deposit around 10:40pm. The next day I placed an order on EBay around 11:20 and went to log into the Netspend app using my finger print and this was the first time it asked me to actually type in my password. Didn't think anything of it since sometimes things like this happens with apps. The problem was it was not accepting my password. So I clicked the forgot password button to have a temp password emailed to my yahoo account. Did not receive the email so I tried it again and nothing happened. Called Netspend to let them know and they asked to verify my email address. Once I done that, the rep told me that they had a hotmail email addyon file for me. I knew this was not right because I've never used hotmail and Netspend has always sent correspondences to my yahoo address. So the rep updated my account back to my yahoo email so he can send a temp password so I can reset mine and log in. It wasn't until I logged in that I realized $540 plus and additional $18 transfer fee was charged for Western Union. I immediately went off and filed a dispute. I also contact Western Union fraud dept and filed a dispute with them as well. Long story short, they said I have to wait until 12/14 to see if I qualify for a temp credit back to my account. Today is Monday 12/3 and western union says the person that received the money was a lady named Michelle Dodson from Kansas City Missouri. Mind you, I live in Virginia and so does all my family and I have never sent money through Western Union ever in my life. After reading some of these comments and finding out there was a class action lawsuit against Netspend, I'm convinced this is an inside job. I will have an update for you on 12/14 to see if I get my money back. And I am also filing a police report
Dear Kayana,
We regret to hear that there was an unauthorized transfer made from your account. We would like to make sure this is addressed and request that you contact us at [email protected]. We will have someone from our main office contact you to assist with your dispute claim.

Netspend has some positive features, they do have overdraft protection for anyone who has direct deposit and their online banking website is very user-friendly and easy to navigate. However, you do have to pay a monthly fee for the overdraft protection feature and to prevent from being charged a fee for every transaction made. My biggest gripe with Netspend is the inconsistency in when your direct deposit appears in your account. At first, the pay I receive from my employer would appear on Wednesdays every two weeks. However, it appears after a while, direct deposit transactions from the same employer were showing up later and later. My last payday, for example, I got paid Thursday morning around 5 am. This week is another payday for me, and I have yet to see my paycheck appear in my account, which has caused significant inconvenience for me. With that said, I'm going to switch to another online bank.
Dear Arthur,
We appreciate your feedback.
Unfortunately, as the recipient of your deposit, we do not have control over when it is sent to us. However, we will always post your deposit as soon as it arrives, whether that be Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] should you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Netspend
Don't brother. They charge a good amount ( fee) for every transaction tied to your card, it adds up rather quickly.
They also take it upon themselves to put hold on your card with out any notice or attempt to fix the issue. Instead they leave you stranded, with no access to your money. Waiting on hold for 35 min to be told the reasonings for the hold was to to an usual transaction was made using the card get this $#*! the amount which sent off red flags was for $1.00. Yep. Done
Dear Dana,
We regret to hear about the problems you have experienced with our service.
We do offer different fee plans that can help you save money. Please visit https://www.netspend.com/prepaid-debit/how-it-works/fee-plan/ for more information.
In regards to your recent block, we can assure you that it was only meant as a protection on your account.
We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] and we will be happy to address any concerns.

This company sucks. I have been trying to contact a live representative for days now and I only get one prompt when I call and it asks me for the card number and the PIN. When I enter this information it says that my pin is not correct. I know for a fact that my pin is correct and I'm starting to get really pissed off now. Instead of resolving this quickly, I had to text help in order for someone to respond. They responded by giving me an email address. I don't want to text them, I don't want to email them I just want to speak to a live human being and stop getting the runaround. Basically the money I put on the card is useless. I will never ever again in my life purchase a card from NetSpend. If you're looking to speak with someone, good luck because I've been trying for days. I do not recommend NetSpend to anyone unless they want to lose their money and get screwed
Hi Christine,
We regret to hear that you have not been able to reach a live representative over the phone. Most options will transfer you to an agent, or you can report that you do not have your card to be transferred. However, please email [email protected] and we will have someone from our main office contact you.
Thank you,

Net spend is another garbage prepaid debit card company that uses deceptive advertising and marketing. Do yourself a favor and cut your net spend card in half. If you're considering Netspend, do yourself a favor and don't.
Dear Jeff,
We are very sorry to hear that you feel this way about our product. We would like to address any concerns you may have and request that you email us at [email protected].

I changed my mind about getting their card. I repeatedly tried to call them to cancel the card, but it is impossible to get through ro a person. I will just shred the thing if send it to me. I will never use this card with shoddy customer service like this.
Dear James,
We regret to hear about the poor service you experienced with canceling your card. Please email us at [email protected] and we will have someone contact you to make sure your concerns are addressed.
Thank you,

I've never had any communication with the company prior to the recent incident, but they decided it would be a good idea to buy my personal information from a broker and send me a card in the mail. This was never initiated on my end and is an illegal practice.
Hi Samuel,

I see a lot of bad reviews, but honestly, I had one issue with them and they corrected it immediately and I was able to talk to a supervisor. I was upset at the time, but hey, problem solved. Also I have used this card for years. Seriously. So either you're using it wrong or the place where you are buying it is not familiar with what to do. I've often had to school some cashiers on how the card works. Some times it hard to understand some Netspend agents, but it still works out. So kudos to NetSpend. And it not just a card for the irresponsible people, it's allows you have another option when it comes to banking in general. The traditional banks are going away. Their cards also offer a savings account making interest and its very good for business purposes. Goodness they are giving you a bank account with a full routing number. If you ARE down on your luck and the typical banks won't give you the time of day, NetSpend is giving you an instant checking and saving account where you can deposit your paycheck. All you have to do is put $20 bucks on the card. Heck you can even scan your physical paycheck to the checking account from a mobile phone. Think about it. I'm not mad, NetSpend. With all these bad reviews, maybe re-think the marketing plan:) I like it though. Thumbs up from me!
Hi Denise!
Thank you so much for your review! We are happy to hear that you have been using our card for so long. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] and we will be glad to help.
