Lousy sales tactics
February 13, 2022

We used Metromile on a trial basis. However, as the saying goes, if something seems to be too good to be true, it probably is not.
Metromile added policies we did not request, and we failed to review them properly. Our failure to review did not excuse Metromile's improper business practices. Furthermore, in order to make our final decision, we had asked in an email for the declaration page to be delivered by mail which never happened.
Metromile's response to our inquiry: "As there was no additional contact as referenced in the call, we assumed the coverage was correct. I apologize for this inconvenience." They failed to deliver the document we had requested and then they made an assumption instead of checking back. What they considered a mere "inconvenience" cost us money since they refused to cancel and refund the unnecessary additional coverage options. The changing of ownership- acquired by Lemonade Inc.- won't fool us.

Metromile - Total Bait and Switch Company
February 5, 2022

Like many of you, I was a loyal customer for years, paying $40-70 per month while driving only about 100-150 miles per Month. Then I bought a newer car, going from a 20 yr old Chrysler to a 10 yr old Cadillac. My insurance doubled immediately, but that isn't the worst. Every few months it has gone up and up and up for absolutely no reason at all. Today I went to their site and pretended to need insurance. Put in all the same info they already have on my car, but used a different email address. I was quoted a new customer price half of what I am currently being charged as a loyal customer. I have sent them so much business over the years, but never again. Their computer program is set up to gauge you for unknown reasons. Some reasons could be, they look and see they aren't getting much from you each month cause you hardly drive your car, so they double the per mile charge. Or maybe it is the model/make of car you have, such as a Cadillac, BMW, Lexus, etc, even if 10 yes old, is recognized as a big spender and thus can raise your rate at will without complaints from you. I can't say what it is, but their system is definitely playing 'the game' with you. Their sales reps and customer support have no clue either. They just go along with whatever their system does, and has a few standard lines they use to explain why a rate would normally go up, even if it doesn't apply to you. I am done with them. Sorry too, for they once had the right idea to help those who hardly ever drive their car. Hopefully, another company will take over the mantle and stay loyal to their customers.

On November 15,2021, at 5:13PM (already dark), my wife's 2013 SMART car (fully insured with MetroMile) failed to start, in a remote and desolated industrial park area, 30 minutes from home. The gasoline tank had 0.7 gas. Though, we have driven many times this car with gas tank at 0.0, using MetroMile Road Side Assistance cell phone App, my spouse requested MetroMile gasoline delivery. The MetroMile App confirmed that the request for gas delivery was received. 30 minutes later, at 5:45PM, I arrived with a gallon of gas. MetroMile has not yet delivered the requested gas, in fact, MetroMile App status was still the same "request for gas delivery was received". We added my gallon of gas but car still failed to crank and start. While I proceeded to jump-start the car. My wife called MetroMile Road Side Assistance to cancel her previous request for gasoline delivery and request a towing truck. MetroMile outsources its Road Side Assistance to AGERO. My wife talked to Miss. Kimberly, with AGERO, who tried and failed at least six times to find our MetroMile car insurance policy. After checking, rechecking, confirming, and verifying that our MetroMile car insurance policy number was accurate and correct, we asked Kimberly to talk to her manager-supervisor. Kimberly's Manager-supervisor also failed to find our MetroMile car insurance policy. Luckily, jump-starting the car worked, so we were able to drive the car to the nearest AutoZone and buy a new battery. We super good senior drivers no accidents, nor claims for years. We are now in the process of finding a new car insurance company to replace MetroMile. One that we can trust and rely for Road Side Assistance. BASE ON THIS EXPERIENCE AND THE WAY METROMILE HAS MISHANDLED OUR CLAIM OR COMPLAINT FOR NOT RECEIVING THE ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE WE PAID AND NEEDED, WE DO NOT RECOMEND METROMILE CAR INSURANCE.

This is a good option to check out if you drive just a few hundred miles (or less) a month. Because of working from home during the pandemic, I hardly drive. I pay about half the amount now that I paid with Geico, which is good. However, the company is literally impossible to reach by phone, email, or online robot. Plus, if you do drive much at all one month, your bill will be more than it would be with a comparable service. My partner added me to his policy and I have been trying to contact them for a week to cancel. They do not respond by email or bot, as promised, so I am now paying for two policies have spent a few hours on hold, etc. trying to reach anyone.

They steadily increase rates for no reason
September 19, 2021

I have no tickets, no accidents, etc. Yet in the 3 years I've used metromile for auto insurance, my rate has DOUBLED. I'm driving the same miles on average yet paying almost twice for them. They do this to get you…. Your rate is low at first and it seems fantastic. Then they slowly raise it claiming some reason that has nothing to do with your driving. Now its at the point where I'd rather switch to a company where I don't have to worry about miles and can have a steady, budget-able rate. With this company, if you take ONE trip out of the norm in a month, your bill will shoot up like $50.

The best!
August 11, 2021

I've had Metromile for about 3 years now. At about $30-35 per month, I've saved hundreds of dollars. Just a few days after getting this insurance, a big dog ran in front of my car causing over $1000 damage. (The dog lived, happily) Metromile took care of it all and I had a small deductible to pay. They were fast and professional. I cannot imagine now going back to 'regular' car insurance. Metromile is perfect for drivers who don't rack up a lot of mileage. And I love how I can go onto my account and see exactly where I went on any particular day and where my car is parked now. Also, in the event something happens to me while driving, they can see just where I am... or at least where my car is! I drive a 2007 car so I don't have all the new technology.

Stay away from this insurance co. In older cars, the device they send you will drain your battery. This "parasitic" drain will lead to the shorting of your electrical system. It has happened to me 4x across 3 cars that never had electrical issues. Metromile is well aware of this issue. They pretend only you are having this problem and will not reimburse you to fix the electrical gremlin problems you'll get. Parasitic drains and electrical gremilins are hard and expensive to diagnose and repair - assume the minimum diagnosis bill you'll get is $500+. You'll probably pay $1,500 to have an electrical problem repaired. Not to mention you'll never feel confident driving the car as you'll never know for sure if its going to start.

Unbelievable! I went through EverQuote and received a quote through MetroMile. It was over double what I'm paying a high level of insurance with low deductibles from a premium carrier. I saw their quote and wondered how many elderly people were being scammed. This is outrageous.

Don't be fooled
April 23, 2021

In my opinion Metromile IS a scam. They only write insurance in a limited number of states. If you ask for a quote on their website in a state they don't write in, they don't tell you but instead take all your information and flip it to other companies that they act as an agent for. I stopped entering my information when I realized I was flipped to a Progressive Insurance website. Even though I closed the page without completing it, I had already entered my email and phone number and then was pestered by Liberty Mutual, Progressive and others.

I've been a customer for more than 8 years and they had all my car's information as they should. I always paid punctually and never missed a payment. On two occasions I needed road assistance (my coverage included that service) however that was never provided but I never made a big deal out of it. I'm also a good driver with a clean record as well as my husband. The problem was that on thanksgiving of 2020 my husbands Econoline was stolen from our house. We filed a claim and before they closed it they asked me to send all my cars' information (again), proof of residency, pictures, id's, and all the information they supposed to already have on file and all was due on January 7th. It was a large file and tried to send everything and never got a replied back from them so I assumed they had all the information they requested. However, on March 02 I received a letter saying that my insurance policy was going to be cancelled on March 23,2021 and I didn't understand why so I called them up and asked what was wrong and the agent I chatted with said because one of my vehicles was for commercial use (which they already knew). I asked them to please reconsider and this person said no and that there was nothing I could do. Then I called to speak with someone and I was able to speak with Usher and explained the whole situation and that I was confused that it seemed to me that they were trying to get rid of me and he replied that they did not received all the documentation requested so I said that I wasn't notified. He said to send the remaining documents and that he would resubmit to the Underwriting department. I sent all he asked for and I was supposed to wait for them to reply so I waited and a couple of days after I sent them an email asking about my status but they didn't reply back until Friday 19th late afternoon saying they will continue with the cancelation because I failed to send all the information requested on January 7th and because my husbands vehicle was of commercial use. I have to mention that during both conversations I had with the agents I told them that I was open to take my husbands car of they policy if they considered high risk but still they just say no. This gave me a huge amount of stress and it isn't fair what they did because non of what happened to us was our fault. To me there was not a good reason to cancel my policy in less than 30 days. I do not recommend this company. It's cheap and you get what you pay for.

Only sign up with MetroMile is you need a bare minimum premium. They underwrite their policies through National General, which is one of the worse providers out there.

Bait and Switch?
July 10, 2020

I drive very little, so MetroMile was initially great. But, when it came time for my six-month renewal, my rate increased dramaticallly, though no specifics (miles driven, credit rating, etc.) changed. When I asked Metromile to explain this increase, they would not give me a concrete answer. And, I asked more than once. So, I am left to assume they raised my rates just because they could. Be warned. I am not the only person who has experienced this ploy.

I received a couple of fliers in the mail from MetroMile and decided to compare it to what I am paying. Turns out their price was pretty much what I am paying now with Pemco. I DO recommend Pemco!
I WAS VERY UPSET to see a hit on my credit score. MetroMile did a hard inquiry on my credit when all I was asking for was a quote. Should have known better than to give them enough info to do that.

BEWARE
April 3, 2020

Worst customer service I've ever encountered with a company. Beware if you have to file a claim with them, you'll be lucky to get it handled and it will take months. They don't answer phones or emails. After you file claims they make up a reason that they are going to cancel your policy.

Metromile is NOT a scam! But... they DO NOT operate as quickly and efficiently as the top insurance companies. I've been with them 4 years to save on auto insurance, and intend to switch to Progressive next month, because they've quoted me even cheaper than Geico.

Anyways, Metromile works at their own pace with no priority for you having an emergency. Small fender benders are fine. You send in pics of the damage and they have a third party provide a preliminary estimate. Then, take your car to a shop for an actual estimate. Eventually Metromile will pay the difference owed to settle the claim. You can get the check directly or have the auto shop paid directly. Either way, no one gets paid for atleast 7-10 days, and the preliminary estimate will always be considerably less than the cost of repairs. But... they DO often pay.

Because most of their services are outsourced, it's hard to get in contact with anyone within the company that can actually help you right away. They're not 24 hours. They're office is closed on the weekends. When you make your claim online, it can take 48 hours to initially hear from anyone. You'll wait another 2 days to find out if you're claim is approved. But... they will often pay.

They've sent me a check twice for minor collision damage. I recently chose a shop outside of their network, and the mechanics told me they've never seen an insurance company so hard to get in touch with to find out if they're getting paid... or not. My car just sat on their lot for 2 weeks before the adjuster recently responded to their supplemental estimate. Yes, they have agreed to pay.

Anywho, I'm often a loyal customer. When I like something, I stick too it. Unfortunately, I don't drive often, and I'm noticing more and more that I'm not actually saving money with Metromile. For example: Driving only 250-300 miles a month, with a $250 deductible, terribly slow company responses, only $30 a day for a rental car, the most incompetent roadside service I've ever had, and constantly increasing rates... I'm paying about $80-85 a month. THEE only thing Metromile is doing is encouraging me to never drive my car so I can save more money, not have to pay their high deductible, or deal with their slow turnaround service.

I want to drive with peace of mind and this is not peaceful for me. My new insurance quote w/ Progressive is $122.03 a month, unlimited miles, $100 deductibles, 24 hour service with representatives available in my city, $45 a day for a rental car, and a company with a national presence and reputation.

I'm not saying Metromile is terrible... I'm saying that if you prefer efficiency, reassurance, and a simple claims process- maybe this company isn't for you. They're still new and working out some bugs. God forbid you have a life-threatening accident. Dealing with all the third-parties this company uses may be a nightmare experience for your family that will want answers and service immediately.

This is my own OPINION.

I tried Metro mile for 4 years. I disclosed everything. I was leasing and every 6 months they would raise the rates with excuses that rates and taxes went up in my area. When I leased my new Vehicle they tried to say it was because of my DUI which I told them about when I first applied and is 9 years now and soon to fall off, most insurances lower with continued services and no accidents, not raise. I even did quotes under other emails and got way lower prices sent back. They are a joke. I am fed up and switching!
Also, don't even bother to try to contact Customer service for policy changes, updates, billing questions, etc. On Weekends, they don't exist. Very frustrating when sometimes the only time you have is a weekend off to Handel your personal business.
