Very disappointed
October 28, 2021

I recently bought two T shirts at L. L. Bean. I'd never shopped there bit it was aunt's favorite store. Quality must have gone downhill! I carefully washed my T shirt in cold water and put in on a drying rack. Imagine my disappointment when it had completely lost its shape. I paid a lot more than usual hoping to get a good quality item that would last a long time. What a waste of money!

Really disappointed with my purchase. I paid $150 Canadian for 1 fleece jacket because of their exorbitant shipping fees from the US. When it came the neckline was huge and the quality was poor so I went to return it. They didn't include a return shipping label so UPS said it would be $45 to return. I ended up paying $37 to send the product back so now I'm out $190 for there product. When I contacted customer service they said that I should have contacted them first and they would send a return label for a fee of $15. It's absolutely ridiculous that that is not included in the original shipment. I will never order from this company again and will warn everyone I know to do the same.

The outer layer came off one wheel of my L. L. Bean Rolling Adventure Duffle, and the wheel on the other side is cracking. Customer Service says L. L. Bean does not repair these bags nor does it have replacement wheels. The company recommends I take the duffel to a luggage shop. I expect a company with such a venerable reputation to stand behind the products it sells. I am disappointed with both the durability of the Rolling Adventure Duffle and with L. L. Bean's response.

Shoddy workmanship
October 12, 2021

I've lived in Maine for a out 40 yrs. And have bought many items from llbean because I knew whatever I purchased would be of the highest quality. I've spent about $300 in the past 2 years on slippers from them and I refuse to spend anymore money with them. Lately, I get more quality for less money at Walmart.

Recently bought a sweater online that offered free shipping to Canada and found the US price tag still attached. I got charged $310 (cdn) for a $169 (usd) product… essentially overcharged by $50 after exchange and tax. I won't be buying again fro LL Bean.

Slippers
September 19, 2021

I am so disappointed. Last November, I bought my husband the $80 slippers. They ripped in less than a year. We drove the hour and a half to the L. L. Bean store to exchange them and we were told rips and tears are not included in the warranty. Isn't that the point of a warranty? I could have bought cheap Walmart ones that would last just as long.

Terrible customer service
September 19, 2021

I have just spent an HOUR+ on the phone with at least 6 reps from LLBean and their associated Mastercard, trying to make a purchase with my new approved card. NO ONE knows how to do their job. I kept getting sent to a different person, only to finally be hung up on with no purchase made. Guess what? I'm going to take that as a sign that THEY SUCK and don't deserve my hard-earned money.

LL Bean does seem to cater to small women. If they do offer larger sizes, they are usually out and they dont' often come in the same color choices. Also, if you return something you paid for with Paypal they only offer store credit or a check that takes 7-10 days to get to you, which is dark ages stuff. I have only ever run into the with them. Stuck in the dark ages it seems all the way around.

GARBAGE BAG RETURN
September 14, 2021

Worse customer service ever! 5 sweaters worth about $400 arrived in a box that was completely falling apart. I printed out their return label, took it to UPS and it was returned to me. At this point it was barely a box. I called LLBean and asked for help: 1) they advised me to drive about 45 minutes retun them 2) said it was somehow my fault that the box was returned; and 3) told me to PUT THE SWEATERS IN A GARBAGE BAG. Terrible serivce and mediocre quality. Will never shop there again..

Look like two different shoes on each foot
September 12, 2021

The color is off where the left shoe is a faded yellowish blue color and the right is a nice suede blue color. The left shoe fits, but the right is loose and slips off when walking. I tried to return the shoes at the store and was told I could not return them due to the shoe looking "worn". If this was the case then their return policy should just say, "Satisfaction guaranteed, returns honored except for shoes". The soles of the shoes look barely worn. The insoles look worn because they are leather and gain a patina even after a day of of use. Yet because of the patina in the insoles they denied a refund. I bought these shoes four months ago.

The highly subjective nature of things looking too "worn" as the basis of rejecting a refund is really a sneaky tactic on LLBean's part. It allows them to have shoddy craftsmanship and when customers buy the shoes they have no recourse when they should actually be returned and refunded.

I am embarrassed to wear these shoes because they look silly due to the shoes being mismatched. It also affects my gait since one shoe slips off so easily.

I have tried to stay a loyal customer for 25 years and with two kids now I was hoping to continue buying from this company. Unfortunately that will no longer be the case.

The above was a review that LLBean rejected from their site. In addition to censoring negative reviews of their product, I have also had problems of poor delivery. I ordered a $600 outdoor table but was sent a $200 side table. The problem was that they made it very difficult for me to return the table at their store and tried to make me pay for the $30 return shipping fee.

Mismatched colors
Soles barely worn but LLBean store would not honor a refund.

Ugh.
August 19, 2021

I wrote a 5-star product review for their website and submitted it thusly:

"I was lucky to find two pairs of these on a different website that sells used items. It's love. I wanted to comment on the complaints that the pants don't go up high enough in the waist. Very true. For me, they come up the perfect height in front but are an inch or two too low in the back, so when I sit, I feel like I'm showing some... ahem... Well, let's just say they don't come up far enough in the back when I'm seated. (I don't notice an issue while standing.) It's not likely to bother me because I always wear a top that goes down several inches below the top line of my pants. So these pants may or may not work for you, but it can't hurt to try them out! I don't feel that my fat tummy is hanging over the elastic in front. I was worried about that, but the pants do come up high enough to prevent that (for me, anyway). The quality is nice and I like the snapped pockets. (I'm a huge snaps fanatic.) And oh, by the way, I wear petite because even though I'm 5'8" tall, I have a long torso and short legs. The petite Large fits me perfectly. I'm excited to wear these come autumn! I wish they had a bit more flare in the ankles/calves, but it's not a huge issue."

And I got an email from them saying:

"Please give your review another try. Unfortunately, your feedback does not meet our guidelines.

We really want to hear what you have to say, so please check out the tips below. Thank you!

DO:
- Use the item before reviewing it
- Share specific details and features of the item (fit, performance, color, etc.)

DON'T
- Include your name or personal contact information.
- Focus on customer service of shipping. Our customer service team is happy to answer those questions.
- Use obscenities, discriminatory language or make negative comments about other reviewers.
- Post advertisements, "spam", references to other products, companies, offers, or websites.
- Include specific price information, promotional discounts or other information that is subject to change."

And I'm like, what the freak did I do wrong?! I didn't break any of those rules. Did I? I'm offended.

That's the basis of giving them three stars, but it's one star for their rejecting my review, averaged out by a five-star rating on their wonderful clothing. Hmmph.

I was led to believe that LL Bean has a good return/adjustment policy but I recently found out it surely does not. When I told them these "Wicked Moccasin " slippers I've had for some time have torn where the lacing enters the slipper, they told me I had to mail them to them AT MY EXPENSE and they would then HAVE THEM EVALUATED AND THEN LET ME KNOW WHAT, IF ANYTHING, THEY WOULD DO FOR ME! Also, some of the people there that I had contact with, including a manager's supervisor "Mark," did not have a very conciliatory attitude; rather it was quite the opposite. Immediately thereafter I went online and found "Overland Sheepskin Co." and bought a pair of their "Men's Sydney Australian Merino Sheepskin Moccasin Slippers" for $99.99. These slippers appear to be made so much better, well worth the extra $20, and it appears that this Company's return/adjustment policy is a far superior one. I've ordered many items from LL Bean in the past but I may now be done doing that.

Ordered my children backpacks and matching lunchboxes for this upcoming school year. The money was taken from my account at 8:52 AM. I received an email later in the evening stating i needed to contact them for more information. I called, the agent said she needed to save my card information because the system was down when i purchased my items. I said ok. By the time I got off the phone, I was charged 3 more times! I called back, the rep I got was the absolute nastiest person I've EVER dealt with in life! He told me since I was so worried about the charges he will cancel the whole order and hung up on me! I will NEVER EVER recommend this company to ANYBODY!

Abominable Service
June 13, 2021

Wanted items that weren't in stock in the store. The salesperson was super helpful - placed an expedited order, gave us a military discount, and promised a receipt by email. The email receipt never came, and the day before scheduled delivery I got nervous. It took three store employees (including the manager) nearly half an hour to get me an order number but they still couldn't give me a receipt. I called the warehouse with my order number and found that the order was now scheduled to be shipped the day it was supposed to be delivered, arriving too late for the trip I needed the equipment for. LLBean failed me at every step once the order was placed.

They do not tell you that they refuse to repair canvas upper bean Main Hunting Boots at purchase. Defective stitching all around. I even offered to pay. I have been wearing bean boots since I was 5 years old ( photo evidence) I am now 62. Product and service have gone to H E L L. Might as well go to Walmart these days, as The Bean Family has sold out old customers! Bean will be just like Sears and JC Penny... bankrupt and despised by all.

I will never purchase from LL Bean again. It is a dishonest company that does not stand behind their products. I sent back a pair of Storm Chasers that were leaking. I spoke to Kay on 4/29/21 about the return, and she sent me a UPS label. At no time did she tell me there might be a problem with returning them because I'd had them since 2019 or possible wear on the shoes. She told me the company would take my word for it that they were leaking. I spoke to Melissa on 5/6/21 about the Storm Chasers. She told me that I could receive a full refund or exchange them. The company didn't have any black women's Storm Chasers so I asked her to hold a men's pair for me as I wasn't sure I wanted them due to the single choice of color. On 5/7/21 Deb called me very early in the morning to tell me that LL Bean would not honor the exchange or refund. When I questioned her regarding Melissa's plan, she told me Melissa would call me back. She never did. I called twice on 5/11/21 and once on 5/12/21 and never spoke to Melissa. During the 5/12/21 phone call, Kristen read me supposed notes from Melissa completely changed from our actual conversation, making me out to be a liar. Finally, on 5/12/21, a supervisor called me to tell me LL Bean wouldn't do anything for me regarding the defective Storm Chasers. I will not continue to do business with a company that doesn't have integrity.

Shirts tearing
May 10, 2021

I have LL Bean dress shirts over 30 years old and they are now threadbare - finally. But the one's I've bought in the past 4 years last about two years before the material starts to tear on the sleeves and show serious wear spots on the collar. What gives? When I called about the first one it happened to, they said it is a one year warranty. So, they are a one year disposable dress shirt now?

I had purchased a number of items from LL Bean and was generally satisfied. However I had recently purchased an expensive pair of slippers that were absolutely subpar. My review was taken down because it "violated their rules". No specifics were given about what "rule" was violated and I did not see any that it could possibly violate other than painting their product is a poor light. I asked them to remove me from all their mailing lists and to their credit they did. Good riddance. If you can't handle honest criticism and reviews of your products than I won't be giving you my business.

Unfriendly staff
April 29, 2021

The Management of the Charlottesville store has its sales clerks making enforcement of mask rules their FIRST priority. I get it - wearing a mask out in public is the right thing to do. But to be approached by a sales clerk and be told to put my mask higher on my face instead of first asking if I need assistance, shows a lack of respect and appreciation for my business. This experience took place in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday when the store was nearly empty of shoppers. Management needs to teach its staff how to handle this situation in a customer-friendly manner.
